The 2010-2011 Program of Sacred Music is offered in memory of
Tomás Luis de Victoria (c. 1548–1611)
on the
400th Anniversary of his Death
Tomás Luis de Victoria (c. 1548 –1611), was the most famous composer of the 16th century in Spain, and one of the most important composers of the Counter-Reformation, along with
Giovanni da Palestrina and Orlando di Lasso. Many are surprised to learn that Victoria was not only a musician but also a priest. He is sometimes known as the "Spanish Palestrina"
because he studied musical composition under him.

CONCERTS AT ST. JOHN CANTIUS
Sunday, August 22, 2010 at 2:00 pm
Organ Recital Br. Jonathan Ryan, SJC, Concert Organist
St. John Cantius’ own Br. Jonathan Ryan, SJC, winner of the First Prize and Letourneau Prize in the Jordan II International Organ Competition last year, will present a 60-minute program of organ music on the parish’s
Felgemaker/Kimball/Kilgen/Bogue Upper West Balcony organ. The program will center around the powerful, dramatic, and evocative Passion Symphony by Marcel Dupré. Originally an improvised four-movement work in 1921 Philadelphia concert, Dupré, one of the greatest organists, composers, and improvisers of the twentieth-century,
depicts the life of Christ within the span of the symphony’s movements: The World Awaiting the Savior, Nativity, Crucifixion, and Resurrection. Each movement additionally is based on a Gregorian chant melodic theme.
Complementing the Dupré work will be the jovial Prelude & Fugue in D Major of J.S. Bach, one of the most popular of Bach’s major organ works known for its infamous series of D Major Pedal scales for the organist’s feet at the work’s outset. One of the most sublime of Bach’s organ works, the meditative, ornamented Chorale-Prelude
on the penitential hymn O Man, Bemoan Thy Grevious Sin, will complete the program.

CONCERTS AT ST. JOHN CANTIUS
Saturday, October 9, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. Chicago Early Music Consort
Musique de Joye: joyous songs and dances from 16th-century France
During the long reign of Francis I (1515-47), French composers developed a uniquely new song form, or chanson,
that was distinctly national in both poetry and music. Thanks to wide dissemination by several French printers, these new songs enjoyed tremendous popularity throughout the 16th century. Experience firsthand the joie de
vivre in these wonderfully intimate songs and dances!
Founded by artistic director, Gary Berkenstock, the Chicago Early Music Consort recreates the rich and diverse sounds of the Middle Ages, Renaissance and early Baroque chamber repertoire in an exciting and historically-
informed manner.
The Consort regularly performs at outstanding venues in Chicago and throughout the Midwest, including multiple live performances on Chicago’s premiere fine arts station, 98.7WFMT. Programs are built around interesting
historical and social themes to which modern audiences can easily relate.
