Dear Friends,

Thanks for the kindness and cooperation that you all oozed on reopening weekend. Huge thanks to the staff and volunteers who put an enormous amount of work into the many safety measures needed.

Cardinal Sean’s Statement on the killing of George Floyd is in this bulletin. I highly recommend it.

To divide or unite? Within a culture struggling with angry political polarization, we Catholics, inspired by Jesus and energized by the Holy Spirit, strive to unite people in the bonds of mutual love and respect. On Pentecost, Pope Francis superbly communicated this message. Francis reminded us that The Holy Spirit is a gift from God that unites, and for whom distinctions such as “conservative” or “progressive” have no meaning. The Holy Spirit is the one who brings together the many; and that the Church was born this way: we are all different, yet united by the same Holy Spirit.” Noting that each of the apostles Jesus called were different - some were fishermen, some tax collectors, some were meek in personality, and others more excitable -- Francis said, “Jesus did not change them; he did not make them into a set of prepackaged models. He left their differences and he united

them by anointing them with the Holy Spirit.” Francis urged us Catholics to look at one another with the eyes of the Holy Spirit, rather than the world, which “sees us only as on the right or left,” -- whereas the Holy Spirit “sees us as sons and daughters of the Father, and brothers and sisters of Jesus.” “The world sees conservatives and progressives; the Spirit sees children of God.” Pope Francis asked the Holy Spirit to help “make us builders of unity, with the courage to love and help each other, in order to become one family.”

“TEMPORARY” is what the current Mass schedule is, as we incrementally reopen with safety in this phase I, “safer at home” interval. It is not a prediction of what the schedule will be in the future.

Rosemary & Fr. Kevin’s last day was Sunday, May 31. When conditions allow, we will have full-scale appreciation occasions. Thanks to all who participated in the wonderful “Thank you drive by” for Rosemary.

Sports: I predict the Pats will make the playoffs, and in Tampa Bay, Tom will not.

Resuming Public Masses WEEKEND MASSES: The TEMPORARY Mass Schedule we continue with this weekend, June 6-7, is:

Saturday: 4pm @ Our Lady’s Sunday: 9am @ Sacred Heart, 10am @ Our Lady’s, 11am @ Sacred Heart (ASL)

Next Sunday, June 14, we will add the 6pm @ Our Lady’s. This is a part of our plan to work incrementally toward expanding in the direction of the pre-COVID Mass schedule. The huge number of tasks involved in doing this safely during this once-in-a-century pandemic is the reason we are doing this so carefully and incrementally. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

WEEKDAY MASSES: They resume this Monday, June 8. The weekday Mass schedule will be:

Monday, Friday, and Saturday 9am @ Sacred Heart Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 7am @ Our Lady’s

CONFESSIONS: TEMPORARY: they are Saturday 2pm-3pm. In June and August, they will be at Sacred Heart, Upper Church. In July, they will be at Our Lady’s, Main Church.

WHO SHOULD COME TO MASS? The dispensation from the Sunday Mass obligation will continue for the foreseeable future—for EVERYONE. Cardinal Sean strongly encourages people in vulnerable populations, especially the elderly and those with complicating physical conditions, to continue to worship virtually from home. I find this question helpful: “Would my doctor want me to worship from home or at church?”

If you are unsure about the answer, may I suggest she would be happy to get a call from you with that question. Please be safe!

MASKS AND HAND SANITIZER: Please come with your own mask; they are required for all those over age 5 who do not have a medical condition that precludes a mask. Please also bring your own hand sanitizer so you can use it frequently while at Mass. While we will have some hand sanitizer at the entrances to the churches, given the scarcity of supplies, we request you help make it last by bringing your own, and also because it will key to have your own in the pew with you.

SOCIAL DISTANCING AND LIMITED SEATING: For safety, we can only seat as many people as can be kept 6 feet apart. The church will be marked to ensure your safety and fel-low parishioners, and staff/volunteers will graciously guide you.

THE VIRTUAL MASS will be continuing as usual since the pandemic began, and it will go at least until the virus is totally gone, and maybe even continue after that. Those of you not able to be at Mass in person are especially important to us. By 8am on Sundays, we send out an email like this with a link you can click on. At a similar time, you can also find our Mass on YouTube at https://bit.ly/SHOLVideos.

WE ARE SO HAPPY TO BE REOPENING. We are grateful to God and to all of you. Special thanks to our staff and the many volunteers who make a safe reopening possible.

Ringing the Bells for Our Graduates This week, the bells of Our Lady’s will ring in honor of the Class of 2020 from Newton North and Newton South High Schools, who will hold their graduation ceremonies on Tuesday and Wednesday evening, respectively. Congratulations to all graduates of all education levels!

Prayer for Graduates Loving God, we ask your blessing upon all graduates. As they finish this chapter, may they take the opportunity to give you thanks for your many gifts, especially for all the people who have accompanied and supported them. As they move forward into something new, may they open their hearts to your wisdom and guidance. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, lead them always to do justice, love goodness, and walk humbly with you. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Virtual Speaker Series Has Begun! We recently premiered our SHOL Collaborative Friday Afternoon Speaker Series, “Summer School”—a biweekly speaker series that is held online and features the wisdom of our collaborative. So many of you have expertise in areas that we all have questions about, and now is a wonderful time to share that wisdom. The series features someone from our community offering a 15-20 minute presentation on a topic of their choosing, followed by an opportunity to dialogue and ask questions. This is a wonderful way to learn about relevant topics and also help us get to know one another.

Karen and Barbara are from Sacred Heart Parish and are members of the choir and other ministries. Karen has been a nurse for 35+ years and is currently a staff nurse on a general medicine inpatient unit at Brigham and Women’s. Barbara has been a nurse for over 55 years, mainly as a nurse educator, and more recently as inpatient surgical unit staff at Newton Wellesley Hospital and as a sexual assault nurse for the Department of Public Health. In June 2019, they completed Archdiocesan training in Foundations of Faith Community Nursing.

In Boston we are physically miles away from Minneapolis. But no American city, and, really, no American citizen is separated from what we have seen this week in vivid detail. The killing of George Floyd has catalyzed reactions across the nation. It has done so because it is not a singular, isolated event.

The killing of George Floyd by a police officer in Minneapolis this week was morally wrong and must be legally prosecuted. To say this is to state the obvious, but it is worth saying because there is a powerful link between the moral and legal dimensions of the killing which has now sparked protest across the country. As a nation we entrust power, even lethal force, to our govern-ment and its representatives in law enforcement. But there are both moral and legal limits to how force can be used. If officers of the law use force in the way millions of us saw in an eight-minute video, then trust in the government, in the law and in the legal system is deeply wounded. That is why the legal prosecu-tion, following constitutional standards, must proceed with care and urgency. The police failed the moral test in George Floyd’s case; now the court will be tested. What is morally wrong must be pursued vigorously by legal standards. That much is lucidly clear.

There is a history here, one documented over decades in print, and now in social media and on television in our homes. The history is clear and tragic: George Floyd was an African Ameri-can man who died at the hands of a police officer. This is a nar-rative which has been repeated often and in multiple locations

across the country. The history is well documented, but it is known experientially in the African American community in a way that is not widely shared.

The wider community is aware of some cases, but the African American community lives with the experience and memories of these deaths in an entirely different way. It is a daily reality - one they must speak to their children about and live themselves with some fear.

This gap between different communities in what is one country, one civic community, is the broader reality which this week’s events force any of us to reflect upon.

George Floyd’s death occurred in the midst of the most cata-strophic healthcare crisis in our history. We are all threatened by it. But the African American community has been impacted in numbers far beyond its size in the country. This fact in turn is related to and repeated in other issues of healthcare, employment and housing.

Responding to George Floyd’s death reaches beyond one person to some of what it reminds us about in these larger realities of our nation. In responding to his death, some have used vio-lence. I can understand the frustration but I must strongly oppose those methods. For any of us, the singular voice of Dr. Martin Luther King still rings true: “Darkness cannot drive out dark-ness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

Did you ever spend time – even maybe live – in a remote, solitary place? Some people really seek out a solitary, isolated place to live. Maybe they need healing and go apart for a while. But there are some who really cherish living apart – all alone.

Whatever draws people to live apart and alone, they soon discover that there’s no real “escape” from the world. In the early centuries of our Church, the so-called “Desert Fathers” spoke about this. They tried to leave the world but couldn’t. In their hearts, in their deepest inner selves burned an awareness of the world they simply could not escape.

It’s a mystery. You and I, in God’s plan, are created for relationships. Our origin is in the relationships of our parents. Our life is in family. We are made for relationships. It’s part of God’s plan for us even when the relationships going wrong.

Trinity Sunday is not about some abstract doctrine. It’s about who God is. God is not solitary, alone. God’s life – that’s right – God’s life is a relationship. Three relationships in one God. God is at the heart of it all – relationship.

Jesus came to show us God. What did he do? He became part of a family. He lived in a community, tight-knit, traditional, full of relationships. He called disciples and made them friends. Jesus, the human face of God, called you and me, as he called his first followers, to relationship.

You may like your religion simple and solitary. If so, you

haven’t paid enough heed to Jesus. In Jesus’ world, God is relationships. In Jesus’ church, one comes to know God by a rich, complex series of relationships.

“It’s my life. I’ll live it as I please.” “It’s my money. I’ll spend it when and where I want.” Those might be American sayings, but they are not Christian. You and I are, by our nature, mixed up with one another. We are, by God’s design, related to one another.

My favorite line in this Trinity-like way of thinking is from one of the documents of our Second Vatican Council. Listen to the words of the Council Fathers. They are talking about God’s plan of creation and redemption. They say, “God, however, willed to make us holy and save us, not as individuals without any bond or link between us, but rather to make them into a people who might acknowledge God and serve him in holiness”.

That’s right. You got it. God saves us through our relationships. Some are great, others not so great. For some, we bless God. For others, we ask for healing. But in our relationships, God is forming us, working on us, making us holy.

Embrace it. Trinity Sunday says God is relationships. God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We are created in God’s image. We are made for our relationships.

So live them. In doing so, you accept nothing less than living a life in God.

Thank You, Rosemary! Enjoy Your Retirement! Last Sunday, our Pastoral Associate and friend Rosemary Seibold retired from professional ministry. It was 16 years ago that she came to Newton, and she served the communities of Our Lady’s and Sacred Heart faithfully since then. In fact, she has been in-volved in ministry for around 50 years, since she was a teenager! While in Newton, Rosemary prepared more than 1000 children and their parents for Baptism and more than 1000 children for First Communion. She mourned and prayed with hundreds of grieving families and gave selfless support to more people than can be counted. She truly shared herself with our community in immeasurable and far-reaching ways.

Last Sunday, we marked her retirement with a fun and festive car parade—there are pictures on the next page. People have also writ-ten in with messages of gratitude, some of which are shared below.

News from the Guild On behalf of Dr. Maura Iversen, Guild President, and the members of the Guild of St. Francis, we would like to thank everyone who helped us raise $12,322.25 to donate to Sacred Heart! Normally in June, we have our annual Communion Breakfast and Annual Meeting, where we announce the $12,000+ donation. We also announce the slate of officers for the next year. So many of you work for our events and help us raise the money; we are grateful! And didn’t we enjoy working together all year! Hopefully, we will be virus-free enough this year to work together again.

Please know that we are working on how we can best schedule and facilitate these celebrations. Because it was a surprise that churches reopened so soon, the Archdiocese has asked us to “get some experience with normal Masses so as to make better decisions with regard to First Communions and Confirmations. We don’t know when Phase Two is coming or what it may look like. It may be easier and nicer to do this in Phase Two.”

In the meantime, for those children who have completed preparation for First Holy Communion, they are welcomed to receive Holy Communion at any normal Mass, at the judgement of their parents. No special ceremony is necessary, though it is nice to have one. If you alert us before Mass, we would be happy to make your child’s reception extra special.

We appreciate your patience and look forward to these celebrations, with the necessary safety precautions, in the future.

While most of us have been adjusting to the new challenges of our daily lives, Chris Golden has been coordinating the maintenance and renovations that were postponed from last fall and the new projects introduced to prepare space for our key tenant, Wellan Montessori School.

MacKenzie Center: We are finishing up the pointing of the building which was begun last fall and then postponed due to cold weather. This will ensure our building is tight, therefore preventing water leaks and wall deterioration. This should be completed soon.

Church: The masons are cleaning and sealing the front stairs. They will also be repairing the doorway to the elevator. This work should be complete by mid-July.

Rectory: We are moving forward to make the first floor accessible to everyone. Last fall, we had contracted a group to build a ramp to the front door and restore the front portico. They will also make some minor modifications inside the building on

the first floor to insure that we are compliant with multiple regulations. Our contractors will begin this project in the later part of May, and it will continue for several weeks.

Convent: We have negotiated a new contract with Wellan Montessori School, which will need space to accommodate two additional grades, seventh and eighth. We are remodeling the first floor of the convent for their use and upgrading other areas in the convent to bring it up to code. This work includes building a ramp to the front door, installing new fire alarms and sprinkler system throughout the building, and removing any and all asbestos. Wellan Montessori School will be responsible for remodeling the first floor to include new bathrooms and classroom space. The convent renovation will take us through the summer. The good news is that the St. Philip Neri statue in front of the convent will remain where it is.

Pastoral Care of the Sick: We are most eager to help any-one who cannot celebrate Mass with us in church. If you or a loved one wishes to receive the Sacraments of the Anointing of the Sick, Eucharist, or Reconciliation, please call the par-ish offices. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is celebrated after all vigil and Sunday Masses on the first full weekend of each month. Please also notify us of hospitaliza-tions, so that we may be of help.

Sacraments of Initiation: For adults interested in Baptism, Confirmation, or joining the Catholic Church, please contact Nick Frega; for high school Confirmation, contact Michelle Solomon at Sacred Heart or Kristina Preman at Our Lady's;

for older children to be baptized or to receive Holy Com-munion, contact Michelle Solomon at Sacred Heart or Kristi-na Preman at Our Lady's.

Infant Baptisms: Infant Baptisms are celebrated at Mass or on special Sundays throughout the year. Parents are asked to call the parish office to begin the process. A program of preparation is offered to all parents. For more information, please visit our website.

Resumption of Full Weekend Mass Schedule, Scheduled Confession Times, and Weekday Masses

Full Weekend Mass Schedule Beginning next Sunday, June 14, we plan to resume celebration of the 6:00pm Mass at Our Lady’s.

In the coming weeks, we hope and plan to resume our full week-end Mass schedule across the Collaborative, adding back Sacred Heart’s Saturday 4:00pm and Sunday 12:00pm Masses, as well as Our Lady’s Sunday 8:00am Mass.

Scheduled Confession Times Confessions will be heard every Saturday, 2pm-3pm.

—In June and August, this will be at Sacred Heart only, in the Upper Church. —In July, this will be at Our Lady’s only, in the Main Church.

Weekday Masses—NEW Schedule Weekday Masses resume this Monday, June 8, and we begin a new, year-round schedule for daily Masses, similar to the sum-mer schedule we have used for a few years now.

—Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart in the Upper Church at 9:00am on Monday, Friday, and Saturday only. —Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady’s at 7:00am on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday only.

This change is due to Fr. Kevin’s departure; if we should be as-signed a new priest, we will certainly reconsider this schedule.
