Engineers Australia WA Division Connected 2009

From the Director To assist students in finding suitable work experience, the WA Division of Engineers Australia has prepared the 2009 Undergraduate Vacation Work & Graduate Employment Handbook for 2009, aptly titled “Connected”.

The information contained in this Handbook has been provided to us by companies in Western Australia that employ engineers and have indicated that they may be able to offer work experience to engineering students.

The Handbook also provides details of companies who may be employing new graduates. Please note that the list of companies is not exhaustive and you are encouraged to investigate as many opportunities as possible.

The Handbook also provides information about membership of Engineers Australia and how we can assist you in preparing for your career as an engineer. Engineers Australia expresses its thanks to all the companies that have demonstrated their support for the future of engineering in Western Australia by participating in this important initiative.

We hope that the information contained in this handbook assists you in your search for work experience and we wish you all the best for your career in engineering.

Young Engineers AustraliaYoung Engineers Australia exists to represent, support and provide a voice for the young engineering team. Through a culture of innovation, integrity, and the pursuit of excellence, YEA facilitates the professional and personal development of its membership.

Young Engineers Australia is currently the single largest sub group within Engineers Australia, with a membership base comprising of over 40,000 young engineers. The group has now been established for over 20 years, with a local committee in each of Engineers Australia’s 9 divisions.

A Young Engineer is considered to be any member of Engineers Australia who is currently completing or has completed a tertiary (university or TAFE) engineering qualification, and is between the ages of 18 and 35.

For more information about how you can get involved, visit the web site:

www.engineersaustralia.org.au/yea

Engineering Education AustraliaEngineering Education Australia Pty Ltd (EEA) is a wholly owned, not-for-profit subsidiary of Engineers Australia. EEA provides Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and Corporate Learning Programs for individuals and organisations within the engineering industry.

The Professional Year in Engineering (PYear)From September 2007, all former international students seeking permanent residency in Australia, and who hold a Skilled - Graduate (Temporary) 485 Visa must, within 18 months of being granted that Visa either:

achieve an IELTS level 7 result,

be in employment related to their graduate status, or

successfully complete a specified Professional Year (PYear) Program

In 2008, Engineers Australia (EA) along with Engineering Education Australia (EEA) were authorised to provide the approved Professional Year Program (PYear) in Engineering.

The PYear is a minimum 44-week, maximum 12 month ‘job-preparedness’ program aimed at equipping participants with the professional skills needed for a successful career in the Australian Engineering workforce; in turn helping to address the engineering skills shortage in Australia.

For more information about the Professional Year in Engineering visit www.eeaust.com.au

Chartered Engineers Achieving Chartered Status signifies attaining the highest standard of competence in engineering in Australia – and it is recognised globally.

Chartered members have demonstrated a high level of professionalism and have shown a commitment to keeping pace with the increasing expectations and requirements for which engineering must take responsibility.

These members have also proven that they are competent to practice and exercise leadership within the engineering team.

Professional Development ProgramGaining Chartered Status is easier and quicker for a young engineer who is participating in a company’s Professional Development Program (PDP). This program involves the engineer, the employer and Engineers Australia working together to provide the engineer with an opportunity for continuous assessment and feedback while working toward Chartered Status. The PDP assists young engineers to develop the competencies of an engineering professional in a structured and supported way.

For more information about Chartered Status and the Professional Development Program visit with web site at www.engineersaustralia.org.au or contact the WA Division on (08) 9321 3340.

Preparing your Application LetterApplication letters should be no more than one page in length.

Address the letter to the person mentioned in the advert, or ring the organisation and get a name – nothing is worse than receiving a letter addressed to “the Hiring Manager”.

Your opening paragraph should aim to get the readers attention and let them know why you are writing.

Use dot points that relate to items specifically mentioned in the advertisement, or your discussions with them. Be specific about how you match the criteria and the relevance of your experience.

Do not use a general letter, it always looks like it. Your letter should be tailored to the position and the company.

Use language that sounds modern and professional.

Stick to 12 point font and a standard typeface as it is easy to read.

Check your spelling and grammar. It’s always a good idea to ask someone else to proof read the letter for you.

Remember to attach a copy of your resume. A copy of your academic transcript and other documentation should only be submitted if specifically requested.

Respond within the time frame given or at least within a week.

Follow up to ensure your application has been received.

Preparing your ResumeThe purpose of a resume is to sell your skills to a potential employer, think of it as a marketing tool rather than a report. It needs to grab the reader’s attention by demonstrating that you are qualified to do a particular job.

Your resume should be between one and three pages in length.

Use 12-point font. Anything smaller is too hard to read.

Use dot points. They will improve readability and assist you to be brief and concise.

Check for spelling and grammatical errors, might be a good idea to have someone else check over for you – its ideal if you can find someone who works in the industry to which you are applying.

Be honest, statements made in resumes will be checked up in either the interview or

with referees.

Avoid initials and jargon, write in plain English.

Don’t forget to include out of work interests and hobbies as well as any associations / membership organisations you belong to. Potential employers like to get an idea of the “whole” person they are going to meet.

The purpose of your resume is to entice the reader to call you and find out more about you and what you have to offer to the company. Its not intended to actually get you the job – that’s for the interview.

If mailing or leaving your resume use good quality, plain paper.

If emailing your resume use a common program such as word – if it can’t be opened easily, it probably won’t get read.

Guidelines for your Interview

ArrangementsConfirm the date, time and location of the interview; plan to get there early. Try and find out the names of the people you will meet and the expected length of the interview.

Research the Organisation and the IndustryThere are a number of sources of information available about companies and industries. Try their Internet site, annual reports and other library resources. Use the information you have gathered during the recruitment process.

Be prepared to talk about yourselfKnow what skills you have to offer an employer. Be ready to give examples of how you’ve demonstrated these skills, rather than a yes/no answer. Be able to identify what the situation was, what you did, what the outcome was. If you don’t have much professional work experience, think of examples from your major university projects or social activities.

Take evidence of your work and education with you, invest in a display book, don’t just have samples / documents loose or in an envelope – these documents are a reflection of you and are to precious to loose. You may wish to make copies of the more important ones to be left

with the interviewer.

Anticipate their questionsHave answers ready for common questions and take out a book from the library of commonly

asked interview questions.

AppearanceRemember first impressions count, your dress for interview should be professional, tidy and leaning towards conservative. Avoid extremes of fashion. Clean your shoes. Don’t go overboard with aftershave, perfume or makeup.

FinallySmile. Shake hands firmly. Be enthusiastic. Be polite to everyone you have contact with at the organisation. Be punctual. Don’t smoke or accept refreshments even if offered, nothing is worse than trying to answer a question with your mouth full! Thank the interviewer for their time. If you are interested in the position restate your interest and ask about the next step. Make a follow up call if you haven’t heard from them in the timeframe discussed at interview.

Other hintsDon’t lie or exaggerate your abilities, answer questions truthfully and as close to the point as possible.

Avoid the appearance of being aggressive, conceited or a know it all.

Make sure your mobile phone is switched off.

Always conduct yourself as if you are determined to get the position that you are discussing.

Greet the interviewer by name, if unsure of pronunciation, ask the person to repeat their name.

Don’t forget about body language or non-verbal communication. Be alert, look people in the eye and maintain a good posture.

Common Interview QuestionsQ. Tell me about yourself?

A. Don’t give your entire life history. If they’re interested in specific personal information they will ask. Start with your degree, mention your work experience, or the key subjects that you’ve studied.

Q. Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

A. Your answer should be appropriate to the position you are currently seeking e.g. moved into a team leadership role. If you have longer-term goals e.g. CEO of company, or principal

consultant, it doesn’t hurt to mention them.

Q. What are your strengths?

A. Identify at least 3. You should have some technical strengths as well as skills in generic areas like communication.

Q. What are your weaknesses?

A. Have some prepared (2 to 3). Make them work / personality (not food) related. Try and focus on those you’re doing something about, so your answer sounds more positive.

Q. Why do you wish to work for our organisation? Or What interests you about our products / services?

A. This is your opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge of the company and the work it is doing.

Q. What sort of people do you like to work with?

A. This is looking at your likely fit with existing team members. Focus on positive attributes such as positive, energetic, enthusiastic, committed or competent.

Q. Tell me about a group project on which you’ve worked? How did you allocate responsibilities?

A. This type of question is seeking details about your team skills and leadership ability. If you don’t have a lot of work experience use group projects from university.

Q. Tell me about a situation that didn’t turn out as you expected?

A. This type of question is designed to see what you’ve learned from the experience. Outline the situation, your response and why, in retrospect, you’d do things differently.

Q. Do you have any questions?

A. Try and have one or two prepared, but not on something already covered.
