DIRECTOR’S NOTESI deeply appreciate the hard working and highly educated designers and skilled actors in our wonderful creative team. We had eight weeks of fun sharing many laughs that I hope will be reflected for you on tonight’s stage. This was a truly collaborative process with many creative voices putting in long hours discussing the subtext of Private Eyes. I was first inspired in design class after working with amazing faculty who helped my concepts take root. The work began to breathe when Professor Lichtenfels and I did a rewarding independent study on Steven Dietz’s play.

I’ve always been intrigued by the psychology of human emotion and a correlation to Performance Studies. Private Eyes was the perfect play to explore this interest. I was blown away by the psychological puzzle that the playwright provides in the text. Unable to wrap my head around it, I continued to explore it and researched psychiatric wards developing a unique approach..

I had lost a brother to suicide in 2008 and I made it my mission to learn more and more about the psychology of human emotion and behavior as a way to better understand others, communicate more effectively, and heal from such a devastating blow to one’s family. I audited a Psychology of Human Emotion class that helped my understanding and at the same time provided insight regarding the characters in Private Eyes.

I compare my style of directing to the layers of an onion. Each day we discuss a scene, what is at the core of the text, and what human emotions the characters explore. Then we walk the stage and look at what energy the text naturally gives off. I ask my actors to feel the character and try several different exercises in the mind of the character. Over the next few days I have the actors live in that character’s world, digesting what we have worked on. Then we come back and peel away the next layer of the onion or text. At the core is truth but all around it is such complexity that perhaps the clarity is rendered virtually impossible until one discovers it personally.

I hope to provide a sense of comic relief as laughter may be deeply rooted in the ugliness of reality. The scenes explore the breakdown in communication that is sadly more common than not in some marriages today. Their multiple layers reveal a romantic triangle where nothing is ever quite what it seems leading us to question what love and lustful affairs can do to a marriage.

I would like to extend a special thanks to Professor Peter Lichtenfels for the immense amount of support he has given me as a student and MFA director. I

would also like to thank my Stage Manager, Julie Friedrichsen, for her teamwork. It was a pleasure. And most importantly, I would like to thank my loving fiancé, Brandon Ingold, for his support both on, and off, the stage.Thank you for having supported me through this graduate journey away from our home in Colorado. None of this would have been possible without an amazing directing faculty and the continued smiles, support, and hard work of Victoria Dye from behind the scenes. Thank you!

ABOUT THE PLAY

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

A first-year MFA candidate in Directing, Andrews comes to UC Davis after working as a traveling drama director and speech and drama teacher in Colorado for four years. She holds a double BA degree in Theatre and Speech Communication from Colorado State University. In 2003 Andrews received a grant to teach in thirteen countries. These included the poorest neighborhoods in India, Cuba and Africa, as well as futuristic institutes and theatres in Japan and Hong Kong. Andrews introduced drama curriculum into many schools while touring and researching the infrastructure of theatres that had moved from rags to riches.

Andrews has directed at the Rialto Theater for C.A.S.T. (Creative Arts for Students of Theatre) and the Roberta Price Civic Auditorium in Loveland, Colorado. She has worked at Colorado State University’s Summer Theatre, Lincoln Center, and Open Stage Theatre Company in Fort Collins, Colorado. Andrews hopes to continue her travels and research as a professional director and professor in speech and drama. Candice permanently resides in Colorado with her fiancé and two dogs that are the love of her life.

Last fall and winter Andrews interned at Sacramento Theatre Company where she taught in the Young Professionals children’s theatre program, co-directed the after school program Kids Write Plays, directed the 2008 winter dance production, Home for the Holidays, and assistant directed La Pastorela. Andrews was recently featured in Artist Spotlight for Inside the City-Sacramento, November 2008.

“Dietz is the master of the perception shift, in each of his works there is an unexpected twist or series of twists that alter the perceptions of the characters and of the audience.”
