2008 Stony Brook Women’s Soccer10

2008 Outlook2007 was a record-breaking season for head coach Sue Ryan and

the Stony Brook University women’s soccer team. The Seawolves won eight games for a second consecutive season, recorded a school-record fi ve conference victories, posted the seventh longest shutout streak in NCAA Division I women’s soccer history and hosted its fi rst ever America East Tournament game, a 2-1 victory over Maine. SBU was also ranked eighth and 10th in the Northeast Region by Soccer Buzz magazine and the NSCAA, respectively, its fi rst ever regional rankings. This year they will look to build on that and move towards their ultimate goal: an America East Championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament that goes with it.

The Seniors Stony Brook will be led by its two senior captains, Brooke Barbuto (Syracuse, N.Y./C o r c o r a n ) a n d Trine Allenberg (Roberts, Wisc./Woodbury) who will be counted on to pace a team with 17 underclassmen. An All-America East fi rst team performer last season as well as a NSCAA and Soccer Buzz Magzine All-Northeast Region selection, Barbuto tied for a team-high with three goals last season as she anchored the SBU midfi eld. A versatile

player who loves to attack the goal, Barbuto will once again be counted on to take charge in the midfi eld as well as lead the Stony Brook offensive attack. By her side will be Allenberg who totaled a team-best 10 points a season ago, tallying three goals and four assists. The forward started all of the Seawolves 18 games up front last year and Ryan will once again look to her for scoring punch.

The Juniors Heading the junior class is goalkeeper Marisa Viola (Cu-tchogue, N.Y./Mattituck) who will be looking to follow up on a record-breaking sophomore campaign. The NSCAA Northeast Region second team selection started every game in net for the Seawolves and set a school record with 10 shutouts which included a scoreless streak of 863:33, the seventh longest streak in NCAA Women’s Division I history. Viola also ended the season with a save percentage of .878, ninth best in the nation and was selected to the America East All-Championship team.

Amanda Hemme (East Norwich, N.Y./Oyster Bay) will compete for time in net after a terrifi c offseason while Alex Teti(Dowington, Pa./Dowington), the Seawolves 2007 Most Improved Player, will help anchor the defense after starting 13 of the 17 games she appeared in last season.

Kelly Grant (Fairfax, Va./Paul IV Catholic) will once again factor in at the outside back position after making four starts last season. Michelle Striefsky (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) will also compete for playing time in the Seawolves backfi eld. The Seawolves will look for continued offensive production from Kate Collins (N. Caldwell, N.J/West Essex) at the forward position after she tallied a goal and an assist in 10 starts last sea-son. Ryan will look to Cait Frank (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington Senior) as a defensive presence in the midfi eld after she made 16 appearences in a reserve role a year ago. The Sophomores Arriving as one of the Seawolves largest recruiting classes ever, last years freshman class lived up to its advanced billing. With a season of experience under their belt, the sophomore class will be looked to for even greater contributions this season.

Leading the way is Sarah Dwyer (Laurel, Md./Reservoir), who started all 18 games last season in the Seawolves backfi eld. The America East All-Rookie selection will be expected to bring stability to a fairly inexperienced Seawolves backline. Also looking to build on a stellar freshman season is forward Dan-ielle Tenaglia (North Reading, Mas s. /Nor th Reading). In her first year with the Seawolves, Tenaglia tied for a team-high in goals (three) and was second in points (seven) as she appeared in all 18 SBU games, making 13 starts. The coaching staff feels confident that Tenaglia will continue to excel up front this sea-son. B o t h J e n Egan (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) and Morgan Sims (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin) will be trying to secure starting roles for Stony Brook this season after playing important minutes as reserves last year. Egan started seven of the 15 games she played in and scored the game-winnning goal in the Seawolves 2-1 America East

quarterfi nal win over Maine. Sims appeared in 17 games a year ago, scoring the game-w inn ing g oa l against Fordham, and Ryan expects her to compete for major min-utes this season. After seeing limited playing time last year, Debbie Aller (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Mel-ville) will com-pete for increased minutes this sea-son. Elizabeth Valencia (Hun-tington Station, N.Y./Saint An-

thony’s) will attempt to come back this season after tearing her ACL. Dana Adamkiewicz (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comse-wogue), Morgan Johanson (Pittsford, N.Y./Sutherland), Gabri-ella Petralia (West Hempstead, N.Y./West Hempstead) and Holly Razzaghi (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) are all poised to make major contributions this year after redshirting last season.

The Freshmen Entering as one the most highly touted recruiting classes in program history, Ryan and her coaching staff expect immediate contributions from this years group of freshmen. The highly-rated class was ranked as the second best in the America East by Soccer Buzz magazine. The publication also rated the group as the 13th best out of 42 teams in the Northeast Re-gion. Dominique Adamo joins the Seawolves from Ramsey, N.J., where she was a two-time all-state selection and four-time all-league selection in four seasons at Ramsey High. Alexis Lindo is a defender who arrives at Stony Brook from York, Pa. where she was an all-state selection and County Player of the Year last season as a defender at Dallastown Area High. Arriving at Stony Brook from Oakton, Va., Karen Strat played three years of varsity soccer at Oakton High where she was a four-time scholar athlete. Alexa Woolley comes to SBU after earning two varsity letters as a defender at Pleasantville High in Elmsford, N.Y. where she was a two-time all-league selection. A local product from Manorville, N.Y., Colleen McKennaplayed fi ve seasons at Eastport-South Manor High, where she was an all-state selection and league player of the year as a senior.

Rachel Silverman earned fi ve varsity letters at Blind Brook

High, joining the team in eighth grade. A two-time all-league selec-tion, Silverman also was picked for the all-section team in 2006. Arriving from West Lafayette, Ind., Daniela Giuliani earned four varsity letters at William Henry Harrison High School. A four-time all-conference selection, Giuliani scored a school record 52 goals in her senior season.

The Schedule After last year’s success the Seawolves will take on one of the toughest schedules in school history which includes eight home games, seven contests against in-state opponents and match-ups with Providence and Boston College out of the Big East and ACC, respectively. The Seawolves will open their season at Kenneth P. Lavalle Stadium on Aug. 22, playing host to Long Island University. SBU will then start a three-game road swing with matchups against Iona, Providence and Manhattan College. Stony Brook will then sandwich home games with Fordham and Bryant around a road trip north to take on Boston College. The Seawolves will wrap up their non-conference schedule with games against in-state rivals Hofstra and Columbia. SBU opens up the conference season at home against Hartford on Sept. 28 and then will make the trip up to New Hampshire to take on last year’s America East Tournament fi nalist. Vermont then comes to town before the Seawolves embark on a three-game road trip with games against UMBC, Albany and defending conference champion Boston University. Stony Brook returns home for its fi nal two regular season con-tests with matches against Binghamton and then Maine who the Seawolves defeated at Kenneth P. Lavalle Stadium in the America East quarterfi nals last season.

Head Coach Sue Ryan

Sue Ryan will begin her 24th season at Stony Brook in 2008. For more than 20 years, she has guided the SBU program from the Division III level to NCAA Division I status and established herself as one of the best soccer coaches in America. Her teams always refl ect the best of what collegiate competition has to offer. One of the longest tenured coaches at Stony Brook, Ryan led SBU to an 8-5-5 record last season as the Seawolves hosted their fi rst ever America East tournament game, a 2-1 victory over Maine. Stony Brook also put together a scoreless streak of 863:33 that ended as the seventh longest streak in NCAA women’s Division I history. Ryan also nutured some of the top talent in the America East conference as junior Brooke Barbuto and senior Jackie Timmes were named to All-America East fi rst team and freshman Sarah Dwyer was selected to the conference’s All-Rookie team. Barbuto was also picked to the National Soccer Coaches Associa-tion of America (NSCAA) All-Northeast Region fi rst team in addition to being picked to the Soccer Buzz magazine Northeast Region third team. In addition, sophomore goalkeeper Marisa Viola earned a spot on the NSCAA All-Northeast Region second team after posting a school record 10 shutouts. In 2006, she paced the Seawolves to their fi rst winning season since 1998. Paced by NSCAA All-Region selection Brooke Barbuto, the Seawolves fi nished one game from making the America East Tournament.

Barbuto joins a long list of All-conference performers including former standout goalkeeper Cindy Bennett ‘06 who was named the 2004 America East Goalkeeper of the Year following a season in which she compiled a 0.80 goals against average and eight shutouts. It wasn’t the fi rst time that Bennett was been recognized for her outstanding play. In the winter of 2004, she earned a tryout with the U.S. U-21 National Team. Following its inaugural season in the conference, a veteran team fl ourished in 2002 qualifying as the No. 3 seed in the America East tournament. The 2002 Seawolves began the season 0-4 but fought against early season adversity to fi nish the regular season with a charge, winning six of their fi nal eight games to earn a conference playoff berth. The No. 3 seed Stony Brook team knocked off New Hampshire in a thrilling semifi nal matchup that saw the Seawolves outlast the Wildcats in penalty kicks to advance to the title match against Hartford. Although the Seawolves fell in the conference fi nal, it was a tremendous improvement from the eighth place fi nish in 2001. The 2002 Seawolves season included a 1-0 win over defending champ BU on their home turf to end a 27-game home unbeaten streak for the Terriers. Ryan’s teams continue to perform in the classroom as well. In 2007, the team posted an overall G.P.A. of 3.2 and 12 team members earned America East Academic Honor Roll accolades. In 1998, the Seawolves won 11 games, their second highest win total since moving to the Division I level in 1989. Along the way, the team rewrote the school record book and garnered national recognition. After dropping the fi rst game of the year, the team ripped off a school-record seven straight wins, Erica Keller set the all-time school scoring record and the Seawolves went on to earn an ECAC playoff berth, its fi rst playoff appearance at the Division I level. In addition, the Seawolves were voted by Soccer Buzz as the third most improved team in the nation and the New York Metropolitan Association of Offi cials selected Ryan’s squad as the team that displayed the best sportsmanship. On an individual level, Ryan’s exploits did not go unnoticed. That spring, Stony Brook selected her as the 1998 Women’s Athletics Coach of the Year, the second time she has earned that honor. Ryan’s success was not just limited to Stony Brook as she was honored for her work with her nationally recognized club team, the Northport Piranha. In 1999, she was chosen as the National Youth

Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and the United States Youth Soccer Association. Ryan has guided the Piranha to two national titles, one coming in 1999 and the other in 1997. One of the players on the national championship teams was Christie Welsh, who is now a member of the U.S. Women’s National Team. Ryan was appointed head women’s soccer coach in 1985 and has guided the Seawolves for the past 23 seasons. Ryan inherited a team that fi nished with a 1-13-1 record in 1984 and in her fi rst year at the helm, improved Stony Brook to 6-7. From 1986-88, Stony Brook recorded double-digit win totals and made three postseason appearances. In 1986, Stony Brook fi nished 12-6-1, and earned its fi rst ever Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) playoff bid after placing fourth in the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association championships. In 1987, Stony Brook went 11-6-1 and claimed the NYSWCAA championship. The following year, the program’s fi nal year at the NCAA Division III level, Ryan guided the team to its best-ever season with a 14-5 record, but lost in the NYSWCAA championship game to Ithaca. Ryan guided the Seawolves to a 12-6 mark in 1994, its best fi nish as the Division I level to that point in the program’s history. For her team’s achievement, Ryan was named Stony Brook’s 1994 Women’s Athletics Coach of the Year. Ryan is one of a select few female coaches in the nation to have earned the United States Soccer Federation’s (USSF) “A” license. She also holds National and Advanced National licenses from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Ryan has served as head coach for the Long Island Junior Soccer League Girl’s Select program and has served as head coach of the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association’s Olympic Development Program (ODP) for girls. Recently, she has been promoted to head coach of the Region I girls Olympic Development Program and is the U-17 U.S. Women’s National Team Assistant Coach. Ryan received her master’s degree from Stony Brook in 1988 after earning a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Cortland. Ryan played four years of soccer at Cortland and was a member of the Red Dragons’ team that captured the United States Women’s National Championship in 1980. In 1982, Ryan served as team captain in the Red Dragons’ fi rst season at the Division I level, and led the team to an NCAA tournament appearance.

About America East... Since its modest beginning as a men’s

basketball-only conference in 1979, America East has evolved into one of the most comprehensive NCAA Division I conferences with a commitment to broad-based, competitive athletics programs, complementing the academic integrity and missions of the member institutions. Each of the nine institutions - University at Albany, Binghamton University, Boston University, University of Hartford, University of Maine, University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), University of New Hampshire, Stony Brook University, and University of Vermont - offers a unique blend of academic and athletic tradition. Progressive in its approach to its more than 3,200 student-athletes, America East recognizes champions in each of its 21 sports: men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, men’s and women’s cross country, fi eld hockey, women’s golf, men’s and women’s indoor track and fi eld, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor track and fi eld, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball. America East also conducts the nation’s most comprehensive academic recognition program for student-athletes. With a geographic footprint covering the Mid-Atlantic to Northeast regions of the United States, America East has a population base of more than 50 million people and nearly 30 million television homes. America East member institutions include more than 106,000 students on the nine campuses and boast nearly one million living alumni.

League History…To see how far America East has progressed, consider the conference was established

in 1979 as the ECAC North. The conference at that time consisted of 10 institutions and sponsored league competition only in men’s basketball, with the champion receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. Men’s basketball remained the lone league sport until the 1988-89 academic year. At that time, the conference’s Board of Directors made a new commitment to an all-sports association, creating the North Atlantic Conference by establishing an offi ce, hiring a full-time commissioner, and embarking on a building program. The North Atlantic Conference merged with the Seaboard Conference (the league in which Boston University, Hartford, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, among others, competed in women’s basketball) in 1989 and the NAC looked to establish conference championships in several men’s and women’s sports. The conference changed its name to America East prior to the 1996-97 academic year and moved the conference headquarters to its downtown Boston in 1997. In 2005, America East hired Patrick Nero, most recently the Director of Athletics at Maine, as the conference’s third commissioner. The conference offi ce moved its headquarters to Cambridge, Mass. in July, 2007.

Athletic Success… America East enters its 21st year of all-sports championship competition on the heels of one of the most successful seasons in history as fi ve of its 10 team sport champions won at least one game in the NCAA Championship and two other teams received at-large tournament bids. In addition, one student-athlete won a national championship and 20 others garnered All-America recognition. America East sent multiple teams to the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship for the fi rst time since 2000 as league champion Boston University and runner-up New Hampshire each received bids. The Terriers, which fi nished the season ranked sixth in the IWLCA Poll, advanced to the quarterfi nal round before falling to national runner-up Penn. Boston University’s Sarah Dalton received fi rst-team IWLCA All-America accolades, while teammate Lauren Morton took home second-team honors and New Hampshire’s Michaela Hardy garnered third-team recognition. Hartford defeated Syracuse in the fi rst round of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship. It marked the second time in three years the Hawks had won a game in the NCAA Tournament. Vermont earned a bid to the WNIT and defeated Dartmouth, 69-50, in a fi rst-round game at Patrick Gymnasium. America East is only one of four Non-Football Bowl Subdivision Conferences to have received multiple postseason bids in

each of the past four years. Hartford’s Danielle Hood was selected in the third round (32nd overall) by the Atlanta Dream of the WNBA, becoming just the second America East player to be drafted.

Vermont and Boston University each earned berths in the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship. It marked the fi rst time since 1996 that America East received multiple bids. Vermont downed Dartmouth in the fi rst round to give America East at least one win in the NCAAs in six of the last seven years. UMBC won its fi rst-ever America East Men’s Basketball Championship and recorded a program-best 24 victories. Vermont’s Marqus Blakely became the fi rst player to win both Defensive Player of the Year and Player of the Year honors in the same season. He also garnered All-America honors from the Associated Press.

UMBC overcame a nine-goal defi cit to upend Albany, 14-13, in the fi nals of the America East Men’s Lacrosse Championship. The Retrievers, which won a school-record 12 games, were edged by national semifi nalist Virginia, 10-9, in the fi rst round of the NCAA Championship. UMBC fi nished the season ranked No. 6 in the USILA poll. Albany and Stony Brook were also ranked at one point during the season. Five America East standouts were chosen All-Americans by the USILA with UMBC’s Terry Kimener receiving second-team recognition. Boston University defeated New Hampshire, 2-1, to claim its second America East Women’s Soccer title in three years and its third straight NCAA berth. It was just the second time the top-seeded team did not win the tournament and the fi rst time a team has won the title on the road since 1996. Boston University advanced to the quarterfi nal round of the NCAA Field Hockey Championship with a 1-0 win over Iowa in the fi rst round. The Terrier’s Pam Spuehler was one of four fi nalists for the Honda Broderick Award, given to the nation’s top player. She was joined by four others as NFHCA All-America selections. Albany defeated Cleveland State, 3-0, in the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship to become the fi rst America East team to win a match in the tournament. Stony Brook’s Jackie Ahlers, a unanimous choice as America East Player of the Year, earned AVCA All-America accolades. Binghamton’s Rory Quiller became the second national champion in America East history when he won the pole vault at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship with a height of 18-0 1/2. He also earned All-America recognition for the third-straight year and was joined by Boston University’s Tahari James (triple jump) and Marisa Ryan (3,000 meters) as All-America selections during the indoor season. James claimed All-American status in the same event at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship, while Ryan also repeated the accomplishment, this time in the 10,000 meters. Albany’s Luke Schoen rounded out the All-Americans, placing fi fth in the pole vault. Stony Brook competed at the NCAA Women’s Cross Country Championship for the fi rst time after placing second at the NCAA Northeast Regional. New Hampshire’s Cathy Parker earned one of the two at-large bids to the NCAA Championship and claimed All-America honors.

Commissioner’s Cup…Boston University took home the Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup for the

third straight year and sixth time in the last seven years. The conference award annually recognizes the highest scoring athletic program in America East as determined by a points system, which rewards a school for success both during the regular season and at championship competition in the league’s sports. Boston U., which won six league titles, three regular-season crowns and had four runner-up fi nishes, tallied 378 points, the most in three years under the current nine-member confi guration. The Terriers won regular-season and tournament championships in fi eld hockey, women’s soccer and women’s lacrosse, while also capturing titles in women’s indoor track & fi eld, women’s outdoor track & fi eld and women’s tennis. Boston U. was also the runner-up in women’s cross country, women’s basketball and men’s and women’s swimming and diving.

The Seawolves won eight games for the second straight season, won a program record fi ve confer-ence games and hosted its fi rst ever America East Tourna-ment game, a 2-1 victory over Maine in the quarterfi nal round. SBU was also ranked in the Northeast Region by the NSCAA and Soccer Buzz Magazine, its fi rst ever regional rankings.

Success in the classroomFor the third consecutive year, the Stony Brook University women’s

soccer team was honored with the NSCAA All-America Team Aca-demic Award as the squad posted a 3.2 grade point average. In order to receive the honor, the team must post a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0 during the season.

Brooke Barbuto and Jackie Timmes were both named to the America East All-Academic team for their commitment in the class-room. Barbuto posted a 3.11 GPA as an Arts and Sciences major and led the Seawolves with three goals.

Timmes posted a 3.51 GPA and graduated with a degree in anthro-pology and biology in December.

The All-Academic Team is selected based on the student-athlete’s academic and athletic accomplishments. Academic achievement for consideration requires student-athletes to have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 entering the season.

Athletically, student-athletes are required to be nominated on the post-season awards ballot, which is determined by the league’s head coaches.

Defense sets recordsSophomore goalkeeper Marisa Viola and the defensive unit had a record-breaking 2007 season. The Seawolves posted a scoreless streak of 863:33, which spanned 10 games includ-ing eight straight shutouts and ended as the seventh longest streak in NCAA women’s Division I history. In addition, Viola set school records for shutouts (10) and fewest goals allowed in a season (14).

Postseason honorsThe Seawolves record-breaking season earned them several postseason honors. Brooke Barbuto and Jackie Timmes each earned a spot on the All-America East fi rst team and freshman Sarah Dwyer was selected to All-America East rookie team. Barbuto was also named to the NSCAA Northeast Region fi rst team and the Soccer Buzz North-east Region third team while goalkeeper Marisa Viola was picked for the NSCAA Northeast Region second team.

Stony Brook

Stony Brook is located 50 miles east of New York City on Long Island's beautiful north shore. The charm of modern-day Stony Brook has its origins in 1940 when philanthropist Ward Melville set out to create "a living Williamsburg" with a blend of housing, business, educa-tion and culture for all to enjoy. More than half a century later Stony Brook's distinctive lifestyle endures. Whether you are interested in browsing, shopping, museum-going or just relaxing with friends at the beach, Stony Brook of-fers a wide range of experiences for students, visitors and year-round residents.

Director of Athletics, Jim Fiore

JimFIOREDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS5TH YEAR

B.A. - Hofstra UniversityM.A. - Springfi eld College

JFD5T

BM

On July 23, 2003, President Shirley Strum Kenny introduced Jim Fiore as the ninth Director of Athletics in Stony Brook University history stating "Jim has the energy, drive, enthusiasm and intelligence to take this program, in the tradition of Stony Brook, very far, very fast." At the time of his hire Fiore was one of the youngest Directors of Athletics in NCAA Division I. Since his arrival at Stony Book from Princeton University in August 2003, Fiore has hit the ground running and pointed Stony Brook on an aggressive course for success in all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. He has undertaken a major restructuring of the intercollegiate athletics program including the hiring of new coaching and administrative staff, dramatic facility upgrades and improved revenue generation. Fiore's vision for Stony Brook Athletics has resulted in unprecedented growth for the program. Following its championship season in 2005, the football program was elevated to the NCAA I-AA scholarship level and in April 2006, Fiore announced that the program would upgrade to Independent status for the 2007 season and accepted an invitation into the Big South Conference as an associate member for football only. In doing so, he has assured the long-term future of Stony Brook football, enabling it to eventually compete for a national championship alongside institutions with similar academic and athletic standards. In addition, his dynamic imaging and branding campaign has given Stony Brook Athletics a national scope. During the 2005-2006 academic year, Stony Brook inked a television deal with Madison Square Garden (MSG) Network to broadcast a multi-game package during the 2006-2007 academic year, the fi rst television deal in the program's history. In January 2006, the department also launched The Stony Brook Sports Report, a 30-week television show that is produced on campus and aired nationally on CSTV. Fiore also spearheaded the bid that resulted in Stony Brook being awarded the opportunity to host the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse North Quarterfi nals in May 2006. Fiore's grand design has produced dramatic results and a series of fi rsts for Stony Brook. In 2004 the baseball team won its fi rst America East title and went to the NCAA Tournament. In the fall of 2005, the football program secured its fi rst-ever conference title in its Division I history. On the same day that the football team won a championship, the men's soccer team capped off its regular season title by capturing its fi rst America East tournament crown to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The men's soccer team went on to notch Stony

Brook's fi rst NCAA playoff victory with a fi rst-round win over Yale. Success continued during the winter months as the women's basketball team put together the second-best turnaround in Division I, going from 8-20 in 2004-2005 to a 20-10 mark in 2005-2006. Along the way, the team defeated nationally-ranked Temple en route to receiving the program's fi rst-ever postseason bid, a trip to the 2006 WNIT. In the spring of 2005, the men's lacrosse team garnered its fi rst-ever Top 20 ranking in the 16-year history of the program and is now regularly ranked in the top-20. Under Fiore’s leadership Stony Brook won its fi rst ever Division I conference championships in women’s sports in 2007 as the women’s lacrosse, cross country and volleyball teams all won titles. Fiore has also turned his attention to department-wide fundraising efforts, with his efforts seeing an increase of over 55 percent in both annual giving revenue and number of donors. In an effort to take a lead role in the university's $300 million capital campaign, the Department of Athletics has secured several major gifts, two of which were the largest philanthropic gifts given to athletics in its history. In July 2005, Fiore hired a Senior Associate Director of Athletics for External Services & Advancement and adopted a new philosophy for the annual Providing Athletes With Support (P.A.W.S.) fundraising campaign, a philosophy that streamlined the annual fundraising process to prepare Stony Brook to exceed all fundraising expectations in the future. In addition, he created the Athletic Director Advisory Council; a 19-member board comprised of Stony Brook alumni, staff and community members that will advise Fiore in the fundraising advancement process. His attention to the bottom line resulted in a new athletic department budget process that relieved the department of an annual systemic defi cit, resulting in a balanced budget for the 2004-2005 academic year, the fi rst time that Stony Brook has realized that goal since moving to the Division I level. Fiore has seen the department balance its budget every year since and has overseen a budget growth from $9 million to $14 million. Beginning in the '04-'05 academic year Stony Brook University Athletics realized a near 20 percent increase in its operating budget due to new revenue streams for the department. Additionally, Stony Brook has teamed up with Islanders Media Inc. as the athletic department continues to nurture and foster strong bonds with the Long Island corporate community. Fiore has secured $30 million from New York State for athletic facility renovations to the Stony Brook University Basketball Arena, Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium and various other athletic facilities. In December 2003, Stony Brook retained HOK, the premier sports architectural fi rm in the nation, to formulate and develop a master plan for the future of Stony Brook athletic facilities. The blueprint has already begun to take hold: the baseball/softball complex received a facelift with the addition of new bleachers and press boxes, the strength and conditioning facility was renovated and expanded, the Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium is going to have a $6 million expansion that will include increasing seating by 2,000 and new Club and V.I.P. seating. Additionally a $20 million renovation of the Stony Brook University Basketball arena will commence in Spring 2008 as well as a $1.2 million renovation to the Pritchard Gymnasium complex. The football, men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse and visiting team locker rooms in LaValle Stadium were recently redesigned and enhanced for $1,000,000. Under Fiore's leadership, Stony Brook student-athletes have also attained new levels of achievement in the classroom. Since his arrival the GPA for student-athletes has risen from 2.86 in 2003 to a 3.11 in the fall of 2007. The '07-'08 academic year proved to be Stony Brook's most successful season academically as its student-athletes compiled a department best overall G.P.A. of 3.06 and saw 339 student-athletes named to the America East honor roll - the most since joining the America East in 2001. Commissioner’s Honor Roll for earning above a 3.0 or 3.5 GPA respectively. Coinciding with this success, Stony Brook unveiled the new Goldstein Student-Athlete Development Center in the spring of 2006, a center made possible through a $1.2 million gift from Stony Brook alum and former All-American squash player Stuart Goldstein '74. The 6,000-square foot state-of-the-art facility can accommodate over 400 student-athletes and features a computer lab, a study hall/multipurpose function room, a career resource/library area and several private tutor rooms. During his tenure Fiore has also guided Stony Brook through the essential and formative NCAA Certifi cation process, helped redesign the athletic logo and athletic website, developed a new comprehensive student-athlete exit survey and head coach performance evaluation instrument, implemented mandatory drug testing, and unveiled an athletic department strategic plan through 2011. Fiore also has instituted a "Book of the Year" program for coaches and staff which highlights important topics relevant to professional and personal development, culminating with the author's visit to campus and discussion with the entire staff. In the fall of 2004, Fiore implemented a Minority Apprentice program to assist in the development of young professionals in intercollegiate athletics. His list of accomplishments has not gone unnoticed. In December 2007 Fiore was named the Sports Man of the Year by The Village Times Herald and in the fall of 2004 he was recognized by the Long Island Business Association as one of the Top 40 executives under the age of 40 on Long Island. Fiore currently serves on University President Shirley Strum Kenny's Cabinet and was also appointed by Kenny to co-chair the strategic plan for image and identity committee. In addition, Fiore directed all personnel matters including the coordination of national searches for coaches, staff and administrative positions. Along with the director of athletics, he also assisted in the planning for short and long-term capital improvements. During Fiore's tenure, Princeton achieved extraordinary success on the fi elds of play and in the classroom. Princeton fi nished among the Top 25 in the Director's Cup standings in three of the four years he was there and is the only non-scholarship institution to ever fi nish in the Top 25. From 1999-2003, Princeton teams combined to win 60 Ivy League championships and nine national championships. From 1995-1998, Fiore was the Assistant Director of Athletics for Intercollegiate Programming at Dartmouth College where he assisted with the daily operation and supervision of Dartmouth's comprehensive 34-sport program. Prior to Dartmouth, Fiore interned at Princeton (1994-1995) for one year during which he assisted the director of athletics on assigned projects. He began his career as a graduate assistant at Springfi eld College before moving on to be an assistant to the Executive Director

Certifi ed Athletic Trainers are the liaison between the student-athlete and the medical community. The primary goal of the athletic training staff is to provide health care for student-athletes competing at the intercollegiate level for Stony Brook University. The Seawolves athletic training staff consists of six NATA-BOC (National Athletic Trainers Association - Board of Certifi cation) athletic trainers, an intern and numerous athletic training students who work under the supervision and direction of the Head Team Physician. In addition, the Stony Brook Student Health Service and many medical specialists in the community assist the athletic trainers and team physician in providing quality health care for the Seawolves. Athletic trainers are an integral part of every collegiate athletic program to ensure that student-athletes are competing in a safe and healthy environment. Each Stony Brook student-athlete is monitored with yearly athletic physicals, medical questionnaires, and orthopedic baseline examinations. On a daily basis, the athletic training staff directly supervises all high-risk sport activities. Preventive measures are taken to reduce the risk of injury and/or re-injury. Should a student-athlete become injured, the athletic trainer recognizes and evaluates the injury, provides immediate care, makes a timely referral if necessary, initiates treatment and develops rehabilitation programs for all injuries. Education of student-athletes is extremely important in the areas of injury preven-tion, nutrition, hygiene, substance abuse, etc. This is done through the athletic trainers and the professionals at the Student Health Service. The Intercollegiate Athletic Training Room is located in the Stony Brook University Sports Complex, adjacent to the arena, outdoor facili-ties and team locker rooms. It contains rooms for hydrotherapy, reha-bilitation, private physician’s examination, as well as a general treatment area. The facility houses state of the art equipment such as Game Ready, Ultrasound, Electric Stimulation, Exogen Bone Stimulator, Treadmill, HydroTrack, Biodex, and an Automatic External Defi brillator (AED) as well as numerous other items. The Athletic Training Room is coed and available only to Stony Brook intercollegiate student-athletes. In addition to this facility, there is an Athletic Training Room located in LaValle Stadium and an Athletic Training Lab which is primarily used as a teaching facility. Stony Brook has had an Athletic Training Internship route to certifi ca-tion since 1984. In the spring of 2002, this program became a major. It is currently in Joints Review Committee on Education Programs in Athletic Training Approved "candidacy status" for students interested in studying to become a Certifi ed Athletic Trainer. The future of this major is directed towards obtaining CAAHEP accreditation. A notable alumnus of the Stony Brook athletic training internship program is Lisa White, MA, ATC, Stony Brook ’87, inducted into the Stony Brook Hall of Fame in May ’98. Lisa is the Head Athletic Trainer with the WNBA New York Liberty. Lisa was a superb student athletic trainer during her undergraduate years at Stony Brook, where she also excelled in Women’s Basketball. In addition several other alumni of the Athletic Training internship program have gone on to become certifi ed athletic trainers at the high school and college levels, as well as entered other allied health care professions such as: medical doctor, physician as-sistant, physical therapy, occupational therapy and respiratory therapy.

Kathy Koshansky was named assistant director of athletics for sports medicine in November of 2004. A member of the Stony Brook ath-letic training staff since 1983, Koshansky serves as the Seawolves head athletic trainer and athletic training education program director. Koshansky is the primary athletic trainer for football and men’s la-crosse and is responsible for the overall operation of the athletic train-ing room at Stony Brook. A tenured associate professor and the Athletic Training Education Program Director at Stony Brook, Koshansky received the prestigious President’s and Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching in 1989. The newly CAAHEP accredited Athletic Training Education Pro-gram, which is offered through the School of Health Technology and Management at the Stony Brook Health Science Center, was developed by Koshansky. Koshansky, who has been a National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certifi cation (NATABOC) certifi ed athletic trainer since 1983, became a New York State certifi ed athletic trainer in 1999 and has served as treasurer and president of the NYSATA. Koshansky was recently named the Head Athletic Trainer for the Empire State Games. The largest competition of its kind in the nation, the Games is a multi-sport event for amateur athletes patterned after the Olympic program. In January of 2005, Koshansky was awarded the Thomas J. Shee-han Award by the New York State Athletic Trainers Association (NY-SATA). The award, which is the highest given out by the NYSATA, is presented to the athletic trainer whose character, commitment and achievements in the athletic training profession clearly exemplify the traits of Thomas J. Sheehan Sr., the long-time Head Athletic Trainer at RPI and one of the founding fathers of the athletic training profession and NYSATA. In June 2000, Koshansky was selected to volunteer as an athletic trainer for the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, NY. On behalf of the United States Olympic Committee’s Sports Medicine Division and Sports Medicine Advisory Committee, Koshansky was also selected as a member of the USA Medical Staff for the 2003 Pan American Games held Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She is a graduate of Cortland State with a bachelor’s degree in physi-cal education/athletic training and the University of Illinois with a master’s degree in physical education/exercise physiology.
