• must understand the scope, work and mission of UICC • must have a vision beyond national boundaries and an understanding of the key global

challenges and issues • must be able to contribute to understanding of issues in middle- and low-income (developing)

NOTE: For continuity, terms on the Board will normally be staggered so that not all members rotate off at the same time. At subsequent General Assemblies, therefore, the Nominating Committee will present a slate of seven nominees for the election of five Board Members. However, to allow for the transition in 2006 to the new two-year interval between General Assemblies,

the Nominating Committee will present a slate of 14 nominees • on the ballot sheet, Voting Delegates will select 10 preferred nominees • the 10 nominees, who received the largest number of votes, are elected by simple majority • the General Assembly will be asked for authorization to defer to the Board the decision of which

five of the newly elected Board members will serve for two or four years. • in addition, the Board will elect a further four members, two of whom shall serve for a two-year

term and two shall serve for a four-year term.

Particular Attributes Mary Gospodarowicz, Professor and Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Toronto is currently the Director for Oncology at the Princess Margaret Hospital University Health Network, the largest cancer centre in Canada. She has specialty certifications in internal medicine, medical oncology and radiation oncology. Her expertise and research focuses on lymphomas and genitourinary cancers. She is currently actively involved in survivorship research and programmes.

Dr Hao is a leading surgical oncologist and medical educator, and an active member in the NGOs that support medical research in China. During his 36 years in practice, he has earned numerous accolades and awards in China, as well as internationally, for his innovative approach in surgery and his contribution to the advancement of public health and medical education. He specializes in gastric cancer and pioneered the surgical model in reconstructions after total gastrectomy. He is currently spearheading the stem cell research effort in transplantation for solid tumour. Due to his great contribution, he was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the highest honour in the field of engineering and technological sciences in China.

Dr Hao is a good speaker and communicator internationally. He has been a keynote speaker in many international conferences. As the President of Tianjin Medical University for over 10 years, he has established much collaboration with famous universities and cancer centres globally.

Dr Hao can speak very good English. His talent in communication will be immense service to this new governing body.

Dr Hao has a good reputation in oncology worldwide. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and a member of the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR) and the WHO International Agency for Cancer Registry (IACR).

contributed greatly to the mission of the UICC as an Executive Committee member and through his involvement with the 2006 UICC World Cancer Congress Programme Executive Committee. He has also been involved with the American Cancer Society University, the Society’s training programme to build capacity and share best practices among international cancer societies.

• In India, Dr Kurkure has demonstrated superb leadership as managing trustee of the Indian Cancer Society. He is a principal investigator with the Mumbai Cancer Registry, an executive committee member of the Indian Co-operative Oncology Network, and the associate editor of the Indian Journal of Cancer. He has helped shape India’s cancer policies through his involvement with the Task Force for formulation of Strategy for Cancer Control and oncologist accreditation. Dr Kurkure has received a Bronze Medal in obstetrics and gynaecology.

• Dr Arun Kurkure can bring to the Board skills related to governance, cancer control strategy, rehabilitation and a support system for cancer patients. He is a practising Breast Cancer Surgeon and Gynaecological Oncologist.

• In 1992, she was elected as a board member with the position of Vice-Chairman of the Services and Rehabilitation Department. She was then assigned as Chairman of the Services and Rehabilitation Department for the next term, from 1996 until April 2006.

• In April 2006, she was elected as Second Chairman, Indonesian Cancer Foundation (in Social Services). Besides early detection, she is responsible for patient-support programmes, especially for underprivileged cancer patients. After attending several international conferences, she set up a Hospice Home Care programme in 1996.

• Reach to Recovery Indonesia was also set up in 1997 adapted from the UICC programme Reach to Recovery International, with the assistance of Dr Jeff Dunn.

• The research training of clinical academics has been a longstanding interest of Professor Markham’s. He is also involved in the regulatory processes for new medicines in the UK through his involvement with the British government’s Gene Therapy Advisory Committee and the Committee on Safety of Medicines. In addition, he has a broad scope of commercial experience, including board responsibilities for the worldwide development of fingerprinting for forensic and medico-legal applications. CRITERIA FOR NOMINATION Nominees should not have, nor appear to have, a conflict of interest that would impair the nominees’ ability to represent objectively the interests of the Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee as a whole should represent fairly the different sectors of UICC membership (voluntary cancer organisations, treatment centres, patient organisations, research centres, universities as well as those of resource-rich and resource-constrained countries. ELECTION PROCEDURE • The Nominating Committee is composed of the Immediate Past President as Chairman and six other
