JOHN BOWLER MLAMINISTER FOR SPORT AND RECREATION
Four years ago Royal Perth Yacht Club
commenced a Sailability Program. This wasthrough the efforts of a band of dedicated
members lead by Commodore Gary Griffiths and thetremendous support of Macquarie Bank.
The vision for this program was born from the success of ateam of RPYC elite level sailors, lead by the late NoelRobins, who competed and won Gold at the Sydney 2000Paralympics.
For those of you who weren’t privileged to know Noel, oneof his strengths, and indeed outstanding qualities, was hisbelief that life was not only made for living but thatnothing, especially not a disability, should stand in yourway of achieving your goals and dreams.
As such, the RPYC Sailability program was introduced toenable everyone, regardless of their level of ability, toenjoy the sport of sailing.
The RPYC Sailability program has seen over 1,000 people, with a wide range of disabilities, venture onto the watersof the Swan River. Today, this is widely acknowledged asthe best Sailability Program in Australia.
The enthusiasm shown by the participants
has flowed to themembership at RPYCresulting in the decision toconduct the 2006 ALCOAIFDS World DisabledSailing Championships.
It is my pleasure towelcome the competitors, officials and supporters ofthis year’s event. It is ourintention to have youleave this regatta full of wonderful memories, gatheredthrough tremendous on-water, experiences as well as agreat social program in and around RPYC. We encourageall visitors to take time out after the regatta to experiencethe lifestyle enjoyed in Western Australia.
On behalf of the members of Royal Perth Yacht Club, wewish all competitors fair winds and may the best sailorstake out the prize.

Welcome to the 2006 Alcoa IFDS World
Disabled Sailing Championships.
Alcoa is pleased to be a major sponsor of the championshipsbecause we believe events like this strengthen communities bybringing people together, not just in competition but also inpartnerships.
It is a testament to competitors and organisers alike that thereare fifteen nations represented in this prestigious internationalchampionship. As a member of a large global company withbusiness units in more than 40 countries I am acutely aware ofthe effort involved in getting competitors and their boats toour remote continent.
Many individuals and organisations have played a part in thepartnership that brought these championships to Perth, including the Royal Perth Yacht Club, the WA Government, andthe International Federation for Disabled Sailing, corporatesponsors and the competitors, support staff and volunteers.Through such partnerships we continue to build stronger moreinclusive communities that can be enjoyed by all.
Of course this event would not be possible without thegenerosity of spirit displayed by the many volunteers who areinvolved in many different tasks associated with thechampionships. I’d like to extend a special welcome andpersonal thank you to all the volunteers, race officials andspectators. Your willingness to lend a hand enriches ourcommunity in so many ways.
For many years members of Royal Perth Yacht Club have givenenthusiastic voluntary support to disabled sailing through theclub’s Sailability program. This well established feature of theRPYC program is creating opportunities for people of allabilities to experience the thrills and spills of sailing, the beautyof the Swan River and the great personal satisfaction thatcomes from being part of a team whilst enjoying thecamaraderie of a sailing club.
As a sailor myself, I’m looking forward to some excellent racingthroughout these championships and the thrill of seeing thecompetitors pit their skills and their wits against each other andthe elements – especially the notoriously variable afternoonbreezes on the Swan River.
Many of you have travelled a long way to compete in this eventand all of you have overcome obstacles to reach this level ofcompetition. Your achievements, courage and determination
are an inspiration to all ofus.
I leave you with the wordsof American novelist, MarkTwain:
Twenty years from now youwill be more disappointedby the things you didn't dothan by the ones you diddo.
So throw off the bowlines.Sail away from the safeharbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails.Explore…Dream…Discover.
I wish all our visitors a rewarding and enjoyable time in thebeautiful city of Perth.

As we enter into the first country qualifier for
the 2008 Paralympic Games, we must expresssincere appreciation for the incredible amount
of work that the Royal Perth Yacht Club has put into thisevent. First envisioned by Noel Robins following the 2000Paralympics in Sydney, the 2006 World Championships willbe a great event. Sailors reunite from around the world inPerth for two weeks of great racing, friendship and story-telling… and embark on a path that will end 32 monthslater in Beijing, China.
I’m not sure that the RPYC truly understood the magnitudeof what they signed up for; but now that they have hostedthis event, they join a very short list of exemplary YachtClubs around the world that have run a Paralympic orOlympic qualification regatta. It is with great pleasure, therefore, that I join the Royal Perth and indeed all ofAustralia in welcoming sailors to the 2006 IFDS WorldChampionship for Single and Three-Person events. Fromthe Yacht Club’s outstanding efforts over the last monthsand with the assistance of the many sponsors, supportersand volunteers, I am confident that the sailors will have anevent to remember.
The many volunteers –from Race Organizers,Shore Support, andLogistics, to Race Officers,Jury Members, Measurersand Classifiers – and thecontributions of thesponsors are critical to thecontinued success of notjust this event, but oursport as a whole. Without all of this support, and withoutthe dedication and perseverance of the RPYC members, this event could not happen. On behalf of the IFDS, anddisabled sailors around the world, thank you to all of thepeople that made this event possible. I look forward tojoining all of you on the water, and wish the sailors fairwinds and fond memories.
Sincerely,
Serge JorgensenPresident, IFDS

Spectator CraftAs in all major yachting regattas, spectator craft arewelcome with the proviso they keep clear of the racingarea at all times and take direction from the marshallingboats patrolling the course. By following instructions ,spectator craft can get very close to the racing byanchoring at strategic points or by following the
competitors along the course.
When moving around, spectator craft should cruise at aspeed that will not cause a wash, especially during lightconditions. The racing course area is defined bywindward and leeward marks in length and spectatorbuoys in width.
