GREECE MYKONOSSailing Holidays in Greece Mykonos

A huge component in Western Civilization, Greece is home to many origins including history, arts,

medicine, and trade just to name a few. South of Athens, the Cyclades have about 220 islands,

one of the most well-known being Mykonos. All of the islands are surrounded by the crystal

clear turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea and feature a mixture of rugged coastlines

with cliffs and gorgeous sandy beaches. The traditional whitewashed architectural design is

seen throughout the buildings. Everywhere you visit, there are hidden gems just waiting for

you to explore. The islands offer interesting culture and history, great places to eat, a vibrant

night life with shops open late and charming tavernas. There are plenty of uninhabited islands

to explore and enjoy in complete isolation and maybe even sleep under the stars during your

sailing holidays in Greece.

Your sailing holiday begins in the port island of Alimos. Prior to embarking on your sailing holiday in Greece, you can visit the beach on Kalamaki or visit any of the great bars and food areas exploring the area.

Lying south-east of Kea, this rocky and barren island of karstic limestone is usually covered in an abundance of

Well-known for its hills, the island lies halfway between Kythnos and Mykonos. A center for trade, the port in Ermoupolis, the capital city, features plenty of opportunities to walk around and explore the city and its longstanding traditions.

The rocky island of Mykonos was historically one of the most important trading centers in the western Aegean. Its beautiful beaches have made it one of the most popular holiday islands in the Aegean. Mykonos is also the starting point to visit the neighboring island of Delos. Delos is one of the smallest islands of the Cyclades. A great archaeological site, Delos has importance in Greek mythology as it was the birthplace of Apollo. Both islands offer visitors on a sailing holiday a beautiful escape.

colorful flowers in the early months of the sailing season. The island is not developed for visitors on holiday but during your brief visit, swimming in the Mediterranean Sea is a great activity. If you are a fan of hiking, this can be a fun activity on the island in spring and autumn when the weather is not too hot.

Island of Alimos Kythnos Mericha

Page 9: Sailing Nations Sailing Holidays 2016/2017

The island of Kea is the most westerly of the larger Cyclades. There is tourist traffic from the Greek mainland but nothing that deters from the beauty of the island. The south side of Nikolaos Bay, an old pirate stronghold in the 13th century, is the port Korissia. The island still has remains of the ancient town walls and a Sanctuary of Apollo. On the north side of the island stands the little Church of St. Irini amid the remains of a strongly fortified ancient city which includes the oldest temple found in Greece. Overall, the island offers visitors a historical experience when they walk through the city.

Put on your walking shoes and enjoy exploring the historic architecture on this island including the ruins from the Temple of Poseidon. The Temple was built in 444 BC with 34 pillars although only 15 pillars remain today. While you’re there, after visiting the ruins, head over to the beach and wait to watch the golden sunset over the Aegean Sea.

Finishing your sailing holiday right where you began, you can choose to revisit places you may not have gotten to visit prior to setting sail on your holiday in Greece.

located off of Albania and Greece’s northwestern shore. The islands offer one of the most scenic

experiences in Greece, woodlands spread over the hills and sandy beaches with picturesque

fishing villages adding to the natural beauty. Offering a peaceful, serene ambience, the waters

of these islands are calm and inviting. The typical sailing itinerary for Corfu focuses on both

northern and southern Ionian Islands offering various adventures depending on what you are

The towers and remaining city walls look particularly striking when approached from the sea but the town is filled with history. Explore the city and visit a magnificent 15th century cathedral built in a Gothic-Renaissance style. There are also museums, local shops, and other cultural things that you can explore.

Lastovo gives visitors the opportunity to take cycling tours, swim, and hike. There are tours that cover the entire island even over the highest of hills (over 400m high). If you aren’t into the athletic component, there are great local restaurants where you can try the food and learn about the history of the area at the same time.

Road Town to Cooper Island – 6.5 nm. It’s just a short sail across the well-protected Sir Francis Drake Channel to Cooper Island. Salt Island lies due west and has good day moorings, where you can tie up to do some swimming and snorkelling before heading to Cooper Island to pick up a mooring for the night in Manchioneel Bay. Take the dinghy ashore to enjoy the beach or relax aboard and admire views of the islands to the west.

Cooper Island to Virgin Gorda, North Sound – 14 nm. After sampling the pleasures of Cooper Island, your British Virgin Islands Sailing holiday will take you northeast to the beautiful island of Virgin Gorda. About 5 nautical miles from Cooper Island, on the west end of Virgin Gorda, is The Baths, a fascinating jumble of boulders, some of which form interesting caves to explore. If sea conditions are favourable for taking the dinghy ashore, this is a must-see highlight. Another option is stopping at The Dogs, a cluster of small islands off

Virgin Gorda to Marina Cay – 10 nm. By now you’re completely in sailing mode. The stresses of life have faded, washed away with the combination of excellent sailing conditions, unparalleled Caribbean beauty, and a variety of pleasures ranging from the laid back to the active. A downwind passage of roughly 10 nautical miles from North Sound to the small island of Marina Cay will carry you along the north shore of Virgin Gorda and past The Dogs. Just northeast of Tortola, Marina Cay is nestled among three larger islands – Great Camanoe, Scrub, and Beef. Worthy of a painting by one of the great artists of history, Marina Cay’s beauty is breathtaking. The anchorage is sheltered and offers numerous mooring buoys. Nearby Trellis Bay is also beautiful. It has a number of shops and restaurants.

Marina Cay to Cane Garden Bay – 18 nm. In a few shorts legs, you can sail northward around Scrub and Great Camanoe islands into the open waters caressing the northern shore of Tortola, passing the long tip of Guana Island, where a day anchorage are available in White Bay. Beyond, the land runs straight and bold, and then curves south until you arrive at picturesque Cane Garden Bay. Many residents of Tortola consider the bay one of the prettiest on the island, with its crescent-shaped beach of fine white sand juxtaposed against a lush backdrop of swaying palms. A number of fun nightspots are located right on the beach, or close to it, and dancing, dining, and enjoying great island cuisine are all popular pursuits.

Cane Garden Bay to Great Harbour – 5 nm. Your British Virgin Islands Sailing holiday has taken you east to the northern end of Virgin Gorda, and then progressed downwind to the west back to Tortola. There’s no reason to stop sailing west because the scenic island of Jost Van Dyke is just a short cruise away. You’ll have plenty of time to stop at nearby Sandy Cay for some snorkelling and a tasty lunch. There are five anchorages or mooring sites on Jost Van Dyke, each with its own special charm. Peaks averaging 1,000 feet in elevation soar skyward from the shore of Great Harbour, home to Foxy’s, one of the most famous restaurants in the Caribbean.

Great Harbour to Norman Island – 10 nm. The last full day of your British Virgin Islands sailing yachting trip will take you southward from Great Harbour to lovely Norman Island and the popular anchorage known as The Bight. Once there you will have nearly circumnavigated Tortola! The Bight has two fun places to eat, including the floating restaurant Willie T, a replica of a 93-foot lumber schooner. It’s also home to the caves at Treasure Point, a fascinating location for snorkelling. Just to the north of Norman Island are Pelican Island and The Indians, four rock pinnacles considered one of the best snorkelling and scuba diving spots in the area.

ST BARTS & ST MAARTENSailing Holidays in St Barts and St Maarten

A sailing itinerary in St. Maarten has extraordinary possibilities. You could spend your sailing

holidays in St. Maarten exploring the northern Leeward Islands spending your days sailing and

sojourning ashore to shop, sightsee, and eat in various restaurants. You can also have a mix of

long and short passages giving you the opportunity to sail farther south to picturesque islands

like St. Kitts, Nevis, and Antigua. Combining the Caribbean waters with islands, fair winds, and

pleasant days of island-hopping, a sailing holiday in St. Maarten offers a variety of possibilities

depending on you.

As your sailing holiday begins, you start by traveling to Orient Bay to port. Hidden behind two cays, lies the entrance where you are able to enjoy lunch. A little further north is Tintamarre, another nice port, with both areas offering great beaches. Grand Case Bay is usually a pleasant

anchorage for the night as it is home to a wide selection of good restaurants and lively bars. It is also home to Creole Rock, which offers superb snorkeling adventures. The port of Marigot is always bustling so if you’d like, you can anchor there and enjoy the nightlife.

A lower island known for its scuba diving, restaurants, and laid-back Caribbean charm, Road Bay is one of the most pleasant areas in northern Leeward Islands. Furthermore, serving as a port for cruising yachts, it is a great place to go ashore for dinner. Not far away is Sandy Island, one of the many off-lying areas in Anguilla that is protected as a marine reserve. Sandy Island is a good choice for an afternoon spent swimming or snorkeling.

Next stop leads you out to Prickly Pear Cays, part of Anguilla’s marine park. These tiny islands offer a good lunch stop in warm weather perfect for a swim or snorkeling along the reef. If you anchor off the south side of East Prickly Pear, you’ll get the chance to see seabirds nesting in the craggy cliffs, a pristine white-sand beach along the cay, and the dazzling

You may have stopped for lunch here on your first day of your sailing holiday in St. Maarten. It definitely warrants a longer stop as Orient Bay offers two good anchorages, shore side attractions, and plenty of watersports to pass your time.

Next up, you travel to one of the prettiest locales in the Northern Leewards, St. Barts, officially known as St. Barthemey. On the way, stop for some lunch and snorkeling at the privately owned Ile Fourchue, a small, hilly isle off the coast. The picturesque waterfront town of Gustavia is less than two hours away where you can stop and explore.

Steep hills overlook the blue waters of the picture-perfect bay of this stop. A nearby village is situated and is well-worth the hike as you will get a stunning view of surrounding islands, as well as great opportunities to snorkel, swim, sunbathe, and relax.

Philipsburg, the Dutch Capital of St. Maarten, is a thriving waterfront port with a lively nightlife, interesting shops, excellent restaurants, and casinos. There is also a beach boardwalk lined with restaurants worthy of a stroll before you decide where you want to stop for dinner on the last evening of your sailing holiday in St. Maarten.

VINCENT AND THE GRENADINESSailing Holidays in Vincent And The Grenadines

Whether you are deep-sea diving, snorkeling, or onshore sightseeing, your sailing holiday in St.

Vincent and the Grenadines will feature a 7-night itinerary that will suit your interests. From the

island of Mustique to Salt Whistle Bay, Tobago Cays, and Bequia, this sailing itinerary has it all!

Also known as the playground of the elite, this glamorous retreat is frequented by royalty and rock stars alike. One of the most exclusive islands in the world, Mustique offers green valleys surrounded by coral, sandy beaches, and coves. Enjoy a private land tour where you can see the exclusive homes of the rich and famous and how they line the island. The Treasure Boutiques are housed in some of the most charming buildings and are a pleasure to spend some time in. Take a prepared picnic lunch to Lagoon Bay or Macaroni Bay and sit on their breath-taking beaches. You can also take a horse-back riding trip along the island’s many trails or mingle with local islanders at Basil’s Beach Bar.

Incorporating the entire northern tip of Mayreau, Salt Whistle Bay offers you two beaches to choose from, the leeward and the windward. The windward beach is considered world class by windsurfers and kite boarders whereas the leeward beach is a great spot to have a picnic and slowly watch the afternoon pass under the shade of a coconut tree. At the south end of the beach, island residents have set up a number of thatched huts, which sell t-shirts, shells, and various kinds of local jewelry and art. Enjoy barbeque and cooked lobster from “yellow man,” an infamous beachside vendor.

On your way to Petit St. Vincent, you will stop at Mopion&Pinese, low lying coral pink sand islands. Petit St. Vincent is a quiet, privately owned, secluded resort island. With lovely beaches, you can take an evening stroll along the generous sweeping sands in a gentle atmosphere. We recommend visiting the island’s cocktail bar and restaurant located in a

Spending two days here, Tobago Cays are a National Marine Park not to be missed. The Tobago Cays are five uninhabited islands, which lie within the protection of an encircling coral reef, Horseshoe Reef. In this location, you are free to enjoy the underwater world, windsurf, or explore the islands by dingy, kayak, or hiking to the summit. The snorkeling deserves several trips. The water is shallow enough that you can stand on the sand in many places. For more adventurous individuals, you can take a dingy through the narrow reef channel where Horseshoe Reef drops off into the deeper water – you may even see a shark! Take a break from the water and enjoy the deserted islands before leaving.

Protected by an extensive reef, many consider the beaches along the eastern side of the island to be the best in the Grenadines. On Canouan Island, you can return to civilized pleasures and play a round of golf, pamper yourself at a spa, or try your luck at the casino!

Bequia, a lush, green isle, is an old favorite among the yachting community and offers something for everyone. In Admiralty Bay, you can spend time ashore exploring shops, bars, and many good restaurants along the waterfront. On Bequia, you can hike further inland exploring winding roads taking you to the heart of the island. Finish your day with drinks at the Frangipani Hotel before returning to your yacht for dinner.

Prior to finishing your sailing holidays in St. Vincent, spend the morning on one of Bequia’s golden beaches or dive the Devil’s Table. Set sail for your final destination, St. Vincent, which remains untouched by mass-tourism. Hotels, restaurants, and bars retain the charm of a family setting or plan a tour of this dramatic island before saying goodbye.

IJSSELMEERSailing Holidays in Ijsselmeer

Covering more than 1.000 m2, the Ijsselmeer is the biggest lake in the Netherlands. However.

Ijsselmeer was not always a lake. Not too long ago, the Zulderzee (South Sea) a salt-water inlet

reached Holland northern beaches. Then, in 1932, after the construction of the Afsluitdijk dam,

the sea became a fresh-water lake. Besides being the biggest lake in Holland and in Western

Europe, Ijsselmeer is also a perfect spot for thrill-seekers and yachting enthusiasts. The high

winds, short swells and deep tides make sailing in Ijsselmeer extremely interesting. The area is

well-known among kite surfers, and the shallow waters make it ideal for beginners.

If your idea of holidays sailing is something more like cocktails, fun and sun, Ijsselmeer has

numerous beautiful beaches you can relax on. Along the waterways you will find many charming

ports not far from one another. The close proximity of the towns allows you to sail in short

stages, making it a good area to practice. Whether you are looking for a relaxing getaway or for

an adventurous sailing holiday, charter Ijsselmeer and have the adventure of a lifetime.

When you arrive in Makkum, you’ll find a charming fishing village with plenty of attractions for every want and craze. The lavish mansions and cozy bungalows nested on the banks of the lake Ijsselmeer

add to the scenic landscape. Relax on the beach, explore the city or go shopping. Water sports enthusiasts have plenty of options to choose from.

Vlieland lies farthest from the coast and is the most remote island from the mainland. Covered in lush vegetation, with green high dunes, long beaches and clear waters, this small and quiet island is a peaceful oasis of relaxation.

The numerous mansions, canals, churches and harbors give away the city’s glorious past and cultural heritage. The Zuiderzee Museum, which gives you an impression of the rich history of Enkhuizen and the former Zuiderzee, is the most important in town.

There’s obviously more to Amsterdam than the Red Light district or the coffee shops. Pedal along the canal and discover the beauty, charm and incredible culture that represent this city. Visit one of the many museums, stroll along the historic townscape, and shop for tulips and try their food.

Nested on the shore of Ijsselmeer, Medemblik is best known for its sailing events. You will love exploring this charming city and its 17th century mansions, big churches and the scenic Radboud castle.

The last day of our sailing holiday in Ijsselmeer will take you back to Lemmer. You’ll get to help the skipper and prove you’ve learned something during the week, walk through the city or enjoy the water sports.
