Greetings!

In the great spirit of Alpha Phi Alpha and the jewels of our dear fraternity I welcome the men of Alpha East to the great city of Rochester!

For nearly one year now I have been learning the ins and outs of this awesome brotherhood. I have been to more Miss Black & Gold pageants than I can count. I have been to more cities and more states in less time than I could have ever imagined. I have had the opportunity to work with great men who believe service is the key to a truly prosperous life. I have learned that Alpha Phi Alpha is the cradle of greatness, the house of hope, and the future of a great movement of men.

We have worked to create an Alumni College brother network. We have increased the college brother regional leadership in Alpha East, while highlighting the good works of our college brothers in the first issue of our quarterly publication of the College Brother Chronicles: Onward & Upward.

Over the past year I have grown in my love of knowing that I come from such great lineage in Alpha Phi Alpha. But what I love even more than that, is knowing that someone will soon say the same about me. Brothers although we live now in the present our memory and our message will live long after we are gone. College and Alumni brothers alike, we have a great responsibility to Alpha and a greater responsibility to our people. As we conduct the general business of our fraternity and our region, I want our brotherhood to have a clear picture of the purpose of Alpha.

We must serve with distinction, live with humility, and transform with pride. We are the beginning, the middle, and the end of the fight for the freedom and truth of our people. We must fight for the corrective change we need internally and externally in order to impact our community and our world in the way we were created to.

I know that Rochester will treat us good, and let us do the same. Make sure that when we leave this city they will remember the great name, and the great men, of ALPHA PHI ALPHA!

Fraternally,

Brother K. Chase Patterson Assistant Vice President Eastern Region Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc

My Dear Brothers

As the 32nd General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., I would like to

take this opportunity to encourage you on the occasion of the 2006 Eastern Region

Convention. It is through events like this that we marshal our forces and gather the

resources necessary to fulfill our mission. In this our Centennial Year, we have

much to celebrate, yet, we also have a tremendous amount of work to do as we

move forward the Alpha Agenda of Leadership and Service. One Voice One

Alpha!!

Alpha Phi Alpha during its nearly 100-year history has always stood in the gap,

supplying voice, vision and leadership to our community and to the disadvantaged peoples around the world.

Through the hard work of the men of Alpha and the support of responsible and concerned citizens such as you

we will continue to uphold our responsibilities as we confront the opportunities that lie ahead.

This weekend is one of celebration and I ask that you do just that. Please enjoy the festivities and the program

that the brothers have in store. But know that tomorrow the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha will and must return to

the community dedicated to upholding our principles of manly deeds, scholarship and a love for all mankind.

In a few very short months we will convene in Washington DC, for our 100th Anniversary Convention. Each of

you are called to convene at this glorious event. Spread the Word! I look forward to seeing each of you, your

family and friends at the Centennial Celebration.

Once again, thank you and God bless as you do the work of Alpha. God bless Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Fraternally,

Darryl R. Matthews, Sr. General President

OFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR OF CONVENTIONS

Alpha Brothers, Ladies and Guests:

On behalf of Eastern Region Convention Committee and the host Chapters of the Greater Rochester and Ithaca areas, it is indeed my pleasure to extend my personal welcome to Rochester, New York for the 74th Annual Eastern Region Convention and the Centennial Celebration of the birth of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

This has been a very exciting year for Alphas worldwide, starting with the unforgettable Pilgrimage in November to now our annual meeting and journey to the home of the Birth Place of Alpha. As we embark on our return to place of our beginnings, I m sure we will all be inspired to rededicate ourselves to another 100 years of community service and the better making of men.

The no place better than Rochester, a city rich in the history of the African-American progression from slavery to prosperity, the third largest urban area in the state of New York. As you walk along downtown Rochester's Main Street you can retrace the steps of the Underground Railroad. From Maplewood Park near the Genesee River, you will see where slaves boarded boats headed across Lake Ontario to Canada and freedom. Retrace the footsteps of Frederick Douglass, and Austin Steward a runaway slave who became the area's first black businessmen and property owners. Visits to the Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in the Corn Hill Neighborhood, founded in 1827 and the oldest black church in Rochester, "The North Star" newspaper and Monroe Community Hospital, on East Henrietta Road, features an ornate facade designed in the early 1930s by Thomas Boyde--the first African-American architect to work in the Rochester area.

We will take a Journey to the Birth Place on Alpha, Cornell University in Ithaca, New York; there we will retrace our Alpha History. Brothers will be able to walk the paths our Jewels forged over one-hundred years ago and see for themselves, originals writings and artifacts of our great Founders. The convention agenda is packed with the business sessions and workshops and traditional convention events to include the Vice President s Reception, a Life Membership, Fraternal and College Brothers

Luncheon. The regional competitions; Miss Black and Gold Pageant, Step Show, Collegiate Bowl and Oratorical showcasing the Region s best.

The local Brothers have planned socials each evening and an outstanding Ladies Program. The Ladies will tour Rochester s many historical landmarks such as the Kodak Home and Museum; they will be entertained with a Fashion Show, health workshop and lunch at famous local restaurants.

Every activity has been planned to ensure your satisfaction, and we will make every attempt to accommodate your every desire. The Committee and I are here to sever you, if there anything we can do to make your stay more pleasurable, please ask. Have a wonderful stay in the Rochester!

Fraternally,

Larry J. Henderson Director of Conventions

Never forget that you are where you are today because the masses have helped you get there and they stand now out in the wilderness, not being able to speak for themselves, they stand walking the streets in protest just not knowing exactly what to do and the techniques. They are waiting for somebody out in the midst of the wilderness of life to stand up and speak and take a stand for them.

Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. (in his address to the 50th Anniversary Convention of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity in Buffalo, New York) c. August 1956

March 30, 2006

Greetings Brothers and Friends of Alpha:

It is with great honor and pride that I extend greetings to you on behalf of the 74th Eastern Region Convention Committee and the 271st House of Alpha, Eta Rho Lambda Chapter.

In 1956 Men of Alpha assembled in Buffalo, NY to celebrate Alpha Phi Alpha s 50th year anniversary. It is only fitting that we return now to upstate NY, the birthplace of Alpha Phi Alpha, fifty years later to celebrate our Centennial Anniversary.

Rochester, NY has the distinct honor of being the final resting place of the only posthumously inducted Alpha, Frederick Douglass, and was once home to one of the Jewels, Henry Arthur Callis. Being in a city with such a great history of striving for the equality of all mankind, we the Alphas of Rochester, NY strive to continue the legacy.

This week we will continue to strive for greatness in adherence to the words of Brother, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who stated that anyone can be great, because anyone can serve . We the convention committee and the brothers of Eta Rho Lambda are at your

service.

We hope that you will leave this convention revived and rejuvenated to continue to support the aims of Alpha Phi Alpha, Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love for all Mankind .

I extend a personal thank you to the members of the Eta Rho Lambda Chapter, the Eastern Region Convention Committee, and Eastern Region staff for their support in the planning and execution of this convention.

Again, thank you for your support and presence here in Rochester, NY as we celebrate Alpha Phi Alpha s 100

Years of service.

God Bless you and Alpha Phi Alpha!

Sincerely,

JJ..DD.. JJaacckkssoonn,, JJrr..

INVICTUS Out of the night that covers me

Black as the pit from pole to pole I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the horror of the shade And yet the menace of the years

Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how straight the gate How charged with punishment the scroll

I am the master of my fate I am the captain of my soul.
