UNI Open on Dec. 4 after a 5-0 performance in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Moyer came back from losing three of four matches to defeat 10th-ranked David Hoffman of Virginia Tech, 12-11, to get back on the winning track. After a pair of losses, Moyer won both of his matches on Sunday at the National Duals, including a 12-4 major decision triumph over sixth-ranked Daniel Frishkorn of Oklahoma State. That win sparked a five-match winning streak, including three straight pins. Moyer closed the season with losses to second-ranked Teyon Ware of Oklahoma and top-ranked Nate Gallick of Iowa State. 2005-Moyer earned the starting job at 133 pounds midway through the 2004-05 season. He started 19 of Nebraska’s last 20 duals, and 20 of NU’s 22 duals overall. Moyer faced stiff competition throughout the year, including nine ranked wrestlers. His only win against ranked opposition came against 14th-ranked Scott Jorgensen of Boise State, 9-2, on Dec. 12. In a span of five days, Moyer faced four wrestlers ranked among the top 15 in the weight class, including three in the top seven. Moyer helped Nebraska to the 2005 Virginia Duals Championships with a 3-0 record. Moyer also ended the regular season with a three-match winning streak. His 12-0 major decision victory over Trey Blakely of Oklahoma on Feb. 12 was the only bonus-point win for either team in a dual that NU won, 16-15. 2004-Moyer was 11-4 in primarily a backup role at 133 pounds. He was 2-0 in dual competition, including a pin of Air Force’s 141-pounder Matthew Benza at 5:59 in their dual match. Moyer won the 133-pound title at the Great Plains Open, and finished second at the UNO Open. 2003-Moyer went 25-10 wrestling in open tournaments. Of his 25 wins, seven were by fall, four by technical fall and four by major decision. Moyer earned three top-five finishes on the season. He finished third at the Dana Open, fourth at the UNO Glen Brand Open and had a fifth-place finish at the Harold Nichols Open. Before Nebraska-A four-year letterwinner for Coach Jason Wedburgy at Oskaloosa High School, Moyer finished with a career record of 146-10. He was a two-time state champion and finished eighth at nationals in freestyle. Moyer lettered in wrestling, golf and cross country at Oskaloosa. Personal-Dominick was born Nov. 11, 1984, and has one brother, Derek, who is wrestling for Nebraska this year. The son of Dennis and Dorsha Moyer, Dominick is a nutrition, exercise and health science major.

2006-07 Outlook Senior Dominick Moyer will look to earn All-America honors as he tries to qualify for the NCAA Championships for the third time in his career.

NCAA Championships 2006-Moyer went 1-2 in his second trip to nationals, including his first career win at the NCAA Championships. In the first round, Moyer was defeated by fall by sixth-seeded Ryan Lang of Northwestern with 1:03 to go in the second period. In the first consolation match, Moyer defeated Rutgers’ Steve Adamcsik, 4-2, to pick up his first career win at nationals. Moyer ended his second career trip to nationals with a loss by fall to Charles Griffin of Hofstra 1:46 into their consolation match. 2005-Moyer was 1-2 in his first trip to nationals. Moyer, who entered the 133-pound bracket unseeded, defeated Josh Keefe of Chattanooga, 2-1 in the tiebreaker period in the first round. In the second round, No. 3 Mack Reiter of Minnesota defeated Moyer, 7-5. Moyer’s trip to nationals ended with an 11-2 major decision loss to Citadel’s Ryan McClester.

Big 12 Championships 2006-Moyer earned his second career trip to the NCAA Championships with his third-place finish at 141 pounds. After a semifinal loss to Teyon Ware of Oklahoma, the No. 3 seed Moyer defeated Chris McCormick of Missouri by major decision 15-3. He defeated Ethan Kyle of Oklahoma State in the third-place match, 7-4, to clinch the berth to nationals. 2005-Moyer earned his first trip to the NCAA Championships with a second-place finish at 133 pounds at the 2005 Big 12 Championships. Moyer’s semifinal victory over Missouri’s Tyler McCormick punched his ticket to nationals. With his NCAA bid already wrapped up, Moyer was defeated in the finals at 133 pounds by major decision, 14-6, by Oklahoma State’s Nathan Morgan. Moyer was one of three Huskers to make it to the finals of his respective weight class at the 2005 Big 12 Championships.

Career Notes 2006-Moyer finished 9-7 in duals and was named Big 12 Wrestler of the Week on Jan. 30 after pinning Chris McCormick of Missouri to clinch the Huskers’ 21-18 win over the Tigers on Jan. 29. Harwood started his first season of varsity wrestling on a tear. After losing his first match of the Harold Nichols Open to start the campaign, Harwood won 14 of his next 15 matches. In his dual debut against West Virginia on Nov. 26, Harwood capped a three-match win streak by Nebraska against West Virginia with his 5-3 overtime victory over Ryan Wilman. The win clinched the dual victory for Nebraska. Harwood followed up that clutch performance with a third-place finish at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. Included among Harwood’s six wins were three bonus-point victories and a win over ninth-ranked Nick Roy of Michigan. Harwood was ranked 10th among the nation’s 174-pound wrestlers after that weekend. Harwood went on to spend a month in the top 10 in the national rankings. In conference duals, Harwood faced a deep field of 174-pound wrestlers. All five were ranked at some point during the season, including eventual national champion Chris Pendleton of Oklahoma State and Missouri’s Ben Askren, who was a national runner-up in the weight class. Against Pendleton, Harwood scored a three-point near fall to draw the match to 10-7 halfway through the second period, but Pendleton pulled away to register the victory in the match, 16-7, in Oklahoma State’s dual victory at Nebraska Feb. 10. 2004-Harwood missed the entire 2004 season while recovering from an elbow injury. 2003-Harwood was one of three redshirts to share Nebraska’s Redshirt-of-the-Year award, compiling a 21-2 record with six pins, two technical falls and two major decisions. He took three first-place showings at the Nebraska-Kearney, Dana and UNO Glen Brand opens. He also added a third-place finish at the Worthington Open. Before Nebraska-A four-time all-state wrestler, Harwood was a two-time state champion helping lead his team to back-to-back team titles. He earned academic all-state honors his senior year and was a three-year member of the Minnesota Storm Junior National Freestyle Wrestling Team. Harwood had a career record of 192-25 including 42-0 records in his junior and senior seasons. Harwood lettered five times in wrestling and two times in football, earning defensive MVP honors while leading his team to a state championship. Personal-The son of David and Susan Harwood, Marc was born Nov. 12, 1983. He has two brothers, Derek, 25, and Jace, 17, and is majoring in art at Nebraska.

2006-07 Outlook Senior Marc Harwood will look to qualify for the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year and compete for All-America honors in his second straight season as Nebraska’s starter at 165 pounds.

NCAA Championships 2006-Harwood went 0-2 in his first career trip to the NCAA Championships. In the first round, Harwood was defeated by major decision at 165 pounds by West Virginia’s Larry Hall, 11-3. Hall took control of the dual by outscoring Harwood 6-2 in the second period. Harwood saw his season come to an end with a 10-1 major decision loss to Missouri’s Matt Pell.

Big 12 Championships 2006-Harwood finished fourth at the 2006 Big 12 Championships with a 1-2 record. Harwood was awarded a wild-card bid to nationals, as he faced a tough weight class in which all five wrestlers were ranked. The No. 4 seed, Harwood won his opening-round match with Oklahoma’s Jerrod King, 11-4, before falling to top-ranked Johny Hendricks of Oklahoma State and second-ranked Trent Paulson of Iowa State. 2005-Harwood was 0-2 in his two matches in his first career appearance at the Big 12 Championships. However, both of his losses were hotly contested matches, including his overtime loss to 15th-ranked Nick Passalano of Iowa State, 2-1. Harwood was eliminated from the tournament with a 2-1 loss to eighth-ranked E.K. Waldhaus of Oklahoma.

Career Notes 2006-Harwood started for the Huskers at 165 pounds for most of the season and finished with a 9-6 dual mark. In the first dual match of the year, Harwood blasted Boise State’s Lex Case in a 13-4 major decision win. Harwood won six of his first seven matches, including a sixth-place finish at the Kauffman-Brand Open and a pin of Wyoming’s Gary Dack on Nov. 26. After a loss to third-ranked Ryan Churella of Michigan, Harwood rebounded to beat fourth-ranked Matt Nagel of Minnesota, 3-2, on Dec. 11, starting a five-match winning streak. Harwood won back-to-back matches by major decision before heading to the National Duals and wrestling to a 2-2 record. Harwood ended the season losing to three ranked wrestlers in conference duals. 2005-Harwood spent most of the season as Nebraska’s starter at 174 pounds. He finished the 2004-05 season 19-12 overall, and 9-9 in duals.

Dec. 17. May closed a 2-0 performance at the National Duals with a pin of Arturo Basulto of Cal Poly. May defeated Mike Spaid of Bloomsburg, 6-4, before starting an eight-match string against ranked opposition. May was 1-6 during the stretch, but three of those matches were determined by two points or less. May’s lone win during that stretch was a pin of 15th-ranked Adam LoPiccolo of American on Jan. 21. May finished the regular season with a 4-0 win over Richard Schopf of Iowa State. 2005-May split time with Mitch Manstedt as the varsity starter at heavyweight. May earned a record of 22-10, with a 7-4 mark in duals. In open competition, May earned three top-five finishes, highlighted by his 4-0 performance at the Great Plains Open on Jan. 29 in Lincoln, Neb. May also took third at heavyweight with a 3-2 performance on Nov. 20 at the Kaufman-Brand Open in Omaha, Neb. May was a five-time letterwinnner in wrestling, while also earning three letters in football as a teammate of current NU football players Lydon Murtha and Nate Swift. May also was a three-time junior All-American. Personal-The son of Pat and Joy May, Jon was born Jan. 3, 1985. Jon has one sister, Katie, 22, and one brother, Michael, 17. He is majoring in history at Nebraska.

2006-07 Outlook Jon May will look to build on a trip to nationals in pursuit of All-America honors in his junior season as Nebraska’s starter at heavyweight.

NCAA Championships 2006-May finished 1-2 in his first career trip to the NCAA Championships at heavyweight. In the opening round, May lost to Indiana’s Dave Herman, 4-1. May earned his first career win at nationals with a pin of Matt Burkholder of Slippery Rock with 1:38 to go in their consolation bracket match. No. 16 Ty Watterson of Oregon State eliminated May with a 7-0 decision.

Big 12 Championships 2006-May qualified for the NCAA Championships with a third-place finish at heavyweight in the Big 12 Championships. After a first-round overtime loss to Jake Hager, May pinned Sean Connole of Missouri with 34 seconds left in the first period to clinch a spot in the third-place match. May then defeated Richard Schopf of Iowa State, 5-2, to earn his first career trip to nationals. 2005-In his first trip to the Big 12 Championships, May finished fourth with a record of 0-2. May lost to eventual national champion Steve Mocco of Oklahoma State in the first round by major decision, 9-0. In the consolation bracket, May fell to Jake Hager of Oklahoma, 6-1.

Career Notes 2006-May finished his first full season as NU’s starter at heavyweight with a 7-10 dual mark. in bonus-point fashion in mid-January. After a 14-3 major decision win over Justin Staylor of Virginia Tech on Jan. 7, Donahoe keyed the Huskers’ surprising third-place finish at the NWCA National Duals with wins by fall over Luke Magnani of Iowa and Michigan’s Mike Watts. A win over 13th-ranked Luke Smith of Central Michigan started a three-match winning streak for Donahoe. Donahoe knocked off American’s Matt Morkel 5-2 on Jan. 21 and defeated 18th-ranked Austin DeVoe of Missouri in a 21-18 win by the Huskers over the Tigers. A win by fall over Ben Hansich of Iowa State closed Donahoe’s first varsity regular season. 2005-With five individual championships, Donahoe proved to be another promising prospect at 125 pounds. Donahoe won his first 10 collegiate matches. After suffering a pair of losses, he went on to win his last 10 matches. Donahoe started his collegiate career with a three-win performance that tied him for the individual title at 125 pounds on Nov. 13 at the Harold Nichols Open in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Donahoe followed that with a 5-0 run to the championship of the 20-and-under 125-pound bracket at the Kaufman-Brand Open on Nov. 20 in Omaha, Neb. On Dec. 4, after winning his first two matches, Donahoe suffered a pair of losses at the UNI Open. That would be the only two bouts Donahoe would lose in his redshirt season. After Christmas break, Donahoe won four matches on Jan. 8 to capture the 125-pound championship at the Beamon Open in Blair, Neb. He followed that performance with a pair of three-win championship efforts at the Brand Open in Omaha, Neb. (Jan. 15) and at the Great Plains Open in Lincoln, Neb (Jan. 29). Before Nebraska-A two-time freestyle junior national champion, Donahoe earned two state championships at Davison High School under Coach Roy Hall. Davison was ranked among the nation’s top 10 teams during Donahoe’s career. Donahoe also lettered in cross country in high school. Personal-The son of Laura and Kerry Donahoe, Paul was born in Warren, Mich., on May 24, 1985. He has four sisters and is majoring in sociology.

2006-07 Outlook Paul Donahoe will look to improve on a 2-2 finish at the NCAA Championships with a run toward All-America honors as a second-year starter at 125 pounds for Nebraska.

NCAA Championships 2006-Donahoe went 2-2 in his first trip to the NCAA Championships. In the first round, the 10th-seeded Donahoe won his first career NCAA match by a 7-5 decision over Patrick Castillo of Northern Illinois. Donahoe outscored Castillo 6-2 in the final period to take the match. Donahoe advanced to the quarterfinals at 125 pounds with a 4-2 win over Jeremy Mendoza of Arizona State. With 27 seconds to go in the match, Donahoe earned a takedown to take the lead for the first time in the match, and he held on for the victory. In the quarterfinals, Donahoe suffered a 5-0 loss to Oklahoma’s Sam Hazewinkel. Donahoe’s season ended with an 8-3 loss to Oklahoma State’s Coleman Scott.

Big 12 Championships 2006-Donahoe clinched a bid to the NCAA Championships with a third-place finish in his first career appearance at the Big 12 Championships. The No. 3 seed at 125 pounds, Donahoe lost 4-1 to Oklahoma State’s Coleman Scott. In the consolation bracket, Donahoe roared back with a pair of wins, a 14-4 major decision triumph over Iowa State’s Ben Hansich and a 10-7 win over Missouri’s Austin DeVoe in the third-place match.

Career Notes 2006-Donahoe finished his first regular season with a 12-5 dual record, tying B.J. Padden for second on the team in dual wins. Donahoe earned wins in 12 of his first 13 matches this season, including an 18-8 major decision triumph over Boise State’s Cory Fish in his first dual match for NU. After a third-place finish at the Kaufman-Brand Open on Nov. 19, Donahoe moved into the national rankings, then defeated Bryce Leonhardt of Wyoming 2-1 in his second career dual match. The strong start continued for Donahoe with a championship at 125 pounds at the UNI Open on Dec. 4. Among the five matches were three pins and one major decision win. The following weekend, Donahoe dominated Michigan’s Paul Shutich in a 15-0 technical fall win that keyed Nebraska’s 18-16 victory in Ann Arbor. After a loss at Minnesota, Donahoe defeated two ranked wrestlers at the Nebraska Duals on Dec. 17. Aleksanyan took second at the UNI Open with a 4-1 record, then followed with wins in four of his next six matches. At the NWCA National Duals, Aleksanyan gave NU a 12-0 lead after two matches in their first-round dual against Iowa with a pin of Daniel Dennis 1:58 into their match. Aleksanyan also was key in Nebraska’s third-place match with his win over 14th-ranked Jason Borrelli of Central Michigan in overtime, 6-4. En route to a 2-2 Big 12 record, Aleksanyan also knocked off 19th-ranked Tyler McCormick of Missouri on Jan. 29, 8-3, to help the Huskers to a 21-18 win. Aleksanyan also defeated Oklahoma’s Trey Blakely, 6-3, on Feb. 10. Before Nebraska-Aleksanyan came to Nebraska from Cal State Fullerton, where he wrestled to a 2-2 record in open competition, after an accomplished high school career at Calvary Chapel High School in California. As a senior, Aleksanyan was 46-3 and finished second at the state championships. That followed a 44-6 junior season that saw him finish third at state. Overall, Aleksanyan was 161-31 in his four years at Calvary Chapel in varsity competition. NCAA Championships 2006-In his NCAA debut, Aleksanyan went 1-2 at 133 pounds. In the first round, Aleksanyan pinned David Armstrong of Cleveland State with 48 seconds to go in the first period. Aleksanyan gained control early, with a takedown 20 seconds into the match. After Armstrong earned a point with a release, Aleksanyan took Armstrong down again with 1:17 to go, then pinned him 29 seconds later. Aleksanyan suffered an 11-2 major decision loss to Thomas Clum of Wisconsin in the second round, before he was eliminated with a 14-7 loss to Scott Jorgensen of Boise State.

Big 12 Championships 2006-With a third-place finish at 133 pounds at the Big 12 Championships, Aleksanyan clinched his first career bid to the NCAA Championships. Aleksanyan entered the tournament seeded fourth and defeated Oklahoma’s Joe Comparin 3-1 in the first-round match. Sanders earned the Brand Open championship at 149 pounds on Jan. 21, then lost a pair of Big 12 matches to top-seven competition before falling in the final conference dual of the season to finish 0-3. 2005-Thanks to a strong finish that when he placed in his last four open tournaments, Sanders finished with a 21-12 mark at 149 pounds. After a 1-2 finish at the Harold Nichols Open, Sanders won three of five matches in the 20-and-under division at the Kaufman-Brand Open on Nov. 20. A 1-2 finish at the UNI Open on Dec. 4 was followed by a sixth-place finish by Sanders at the UNK Runza Loper Open on Dec. 11. Sanders won four of six matches in his next tournament, the Beamon Open on Jan. 8, to earn his first of two straight fourth-place finishes. The second came at the Brand Open on Jan. 15, as he again won four of six matches. Sanders ended the year with a second-place finish at the Great Plains Open on Jan. 29 in Lincoln, Neb. Before Nebraska-Sanders won two state championships for his father, Coach Bob Sanders, at San Juan High School. In his senior year, Sanders went 51-0 at 140 pounds, capping a 169-9 career in which he won 100 matches by fall. addition to Nebraska’s roster, as he led the team with 12 wins by fall. Jones jumped into Nebraska’s starting lineup for the National Duals, and in his first dual match, defeated second-ranked Paul Bradley of Iowa, 4-3. Later that day, Jones pinned 17th-ranked Tyrel Todd of Michigan 41 seconds into their match. After winning by major decision over Brent Parkey of Oklahoma State, 15-4, Jones defeated 20th-ranked Christian Stinnott of Central Michigan, 6-4, to earn his fourth win of National Duals. Only Jacob Klein matched Jones’ four wins among NU wrestlers. After a loss to fifth-ranked Josh Glenn of American, Jones came back to finish 2-2 in conference dual wrestling, including a win by major decision over 14th-ranked Justin Dyer of Oklahoma, 14-5. Jones moved up to the varsity after dominating the open tournament ranks. Jones finished second with a 4-1 day at the Kaufman-Brand Open. All four of his wins were falls. Jones then won the UNI Open on Dec. 4 on the strength of five wins, including four pins. On Jan. 7, Jones won the Dana College Open 184-pound championship on the strength of four wins by fall. NCAA Championships 2006-In his first trip to nationals, Jones finished 2-2 at 184 pounds. In the first round, Jones lost to Kent State’s Alex Camargo, 9-7. Jones mounted an impressive comeback from an early 7-2 first-period deficit to draw within one with 1:55 to go in the match, but a takedown by Camargo with just over a minute to go in the match clinched the win for Camargo. Jones advanced to the first consolation round with a win by fall over Jesse Taylor of Cal State Fullerton 52 seconds into their pigtail consolation bracket match. Jones stayed alive in the consolation bracket with a 9-6 victory over Ron Howard of Cleveland State before being eliminated by Iowa’s Paul Bradley, 10-3.

Big 12 Championships 2006-Jones received one of eight wild-card berths to the NCAA Championships as he finished in fourth place with a 1-2 record in his first career appearance at the Big 12 Championships. Competing in the 20-and-under division at 157 pounds, Oliver finished third after winning his first four collegiate matches, including two wins by fall and one by major decision. After a 3-2 day at the UNI Open, Oliver rebounded to win all four of his matches, including three by fall at the Beamon Open Jan. 8 in Blair, Neb., to earn his first individual championship. To close the season, Oliver posted back-to-back 3-1, second- place showings at the Brand Open on Jan. 15 and the Great Plains Open on Jan. 29. Before Nebraska-Oliver won all 130 of his high school matches during a four-year career at Omaha Creighton Prep in which he won four state championships for the Junior Jays. Under the direction of coaches John Hiffernan and Ray Oliver, Chris Oliver wrestled in the 103, 119, 140, and 152-pound weight classes during his four years at Creighton Prep. Personal-The son of Ray and Sybil Oliver, Chris was born in Lincoln, Neb., on Feb. 4, 1986. Chris has an 26-year old brother, Archie Ray Jr., and a 11-year old sister, Chelsea. 2006-07 Outlook Chris Oliver looks to build on last year’s strong start to make his first appearance at the NCAA Championships in his second year in the starting lineup at 157 pounds.

Big 12 Championships 2006-Oliver finished 0-3 in his first Big 12 Championships at 157 pounds. No. 15 Kevin Ward of Oklahoma State defeated Oliver, 3-1, in the first-round match. After a narrow 6-5 loss to Will Rowe of Oklahoma, Oliver was defeated by fall by Michael Chandler of Missouri.

Career Notes 2006-Oliver won eight of his first nine matches en route to 16 regular-season wins and an 11-5 dual record. In his first dual match, Oliver made a rousing debut with a pin of Johnny Nunez of Boise State with 21 seconds to go in the second period of their match. Oliver finished third at the UNI Open on Dec. 4 with a 5-1 record, then defeated Rob Sulaver of Michigan, 9-2, on Dec. 9 in the Huskers’ 18-16 win over the third-ranked Wolverines. Oliver bounced back from a loss at Minnesota to win his next three matches, including wins by fall and major decision. At National Duals, Oliver bounced back from a loss to third-ranked Joe Johnston of Iowa to pin fifth-ranked Steve Luke of Michigan to key the Huskers’ 24-16 quarterfinal win over the Wolverines as part of a 2-2 performance for Oliver in Cedar Falls.

2006-07 Outlook Austin Baier will provide depth at 125 and 133 pounds this season for the Huskers after a solid redshirt campaign.

Career Notes 2006-Baier finished his first year in the program with an 8-8 record wrestling mainly at 125 pounds. Baier’s best performance came at the Kaufman-Brand Open in Omaha, Neb., on Nov. 19. After a sudden-victory loss, Baier rattled off three straight wins in the consolation bracket before a narrow 5-3 loss to Cory Fish of Boise State. That came after Baier finished 3-2 at the Harold Nichols Open a week earlier. Baier won by major decision in the first round over Josh Pratt of Buena Vista before losing in the second round. After two wins in the consolation bracket, Baier lost to Ben Hanisch of Iowa State. Before Nebraska-Baier closed his varsity wrestling career at Nodaway Valley High School in Greenfield, Iowa with a state championship. Baier, who also finished second in 2004, was a three-time state qualifier for Coach Tim Duff. Along with his four letters in wrestling, Baier was a three-year letterman in baseball and football and earned one monogram in track. Baier was honored as an all-conference performer in wrestling, football and baseball. Personal-Austin, the son of Tim and Joni Baier, was born April 24, 1987, in Greenfield, Iowa. Baier has two brothers, Jared, 15 and Kolby, 13. Austin is majoring in business administration.

2006-07 Outlook Craig Brester will be a candidate to fill the spot left by the departure of two-time All-American B.J. Padden at 197 pounds.

Career Notes 2006-Brester posted a strong finish to his first season in the NU wrestling program, finishing in the top three in four of his last five tournaments to wrap up a 24-9 season. Brester, who wrestled primarily at 174 pounds, earned the championship at 174 pounds at the UNK Loper Open on Dec. 10 with a 4-0 showing. Brester’s string of top-three finishes started at the Oklahoma Open on Nov. 26. Brester got to the finals with three victories including a win by major decision and another by technical fall. After a 2-2 effort at the UNI Open on Dec. 4, Brester earned the UNK Loper Open 174-pound championship, then authored a pair of third-place finishes. On Jan. 7, Brester finished third at the Dana College Open, including three wins by fall and another by major decision. Two weeks later, Brester finished third at 184 pounds at the Brand Open in Omaha, Neb. Brester was dominant in the consolation bracket with wins by major decision and fall in his two consolation bracket matches. Before Nebraska-Brester was a two-time state champion at Howells High School under Coach Lee Schroeder. 2006-07 Outlook Brandon Browne is the frontrunner to take over for two-time All-American Jacob Klein at 174 pounds after wrestling in six dual matches in his two-year career at NU.

Career Notes 2006-Browne split time between 174 and 184 pounds and between open tournaments and duals, as he finished 14-6 on the season with a 3-3 dual mark. Browne opened the season with a 5-0 championship run at 174 pounds at the Harold Nichols Open on Nov. 12. After a 2-2 record at the Kaufman-Brand Open, Browne took second at the UNI Open with a 4-1 record, losing only in the finals to Nebraska’s Jacob Klein. Browne stepped into the Huskers’ starting lineup the following week at 184 pounds. On Dec. 17 at the Nebraska Duals, Browne had his best dual performance with a win by fall over Oregon State’s Neal Beaudry. 2005-Browne showed great promise as a redshirt at 165 pounds for Nebraska. Browne was 20-5 in open competition, including three individual championships. Of the six tournaments he entered, he placed in five, including his first collegiate competition, the Kaufman-Brand Open on Nov. 11. That day, Browne finished fourth in the 20-and-under division, as he won his first four matches. After a 1-2 showing at the UNI Open on Dec. 4, Browne finished third at the UNK Runza Loper Open with a 4-1 record. He won his last two matches at UNK, beginning a 12-match winning streak that stretched to the end of the season. Browne won four matches to take the Beamon Open championship on Jan. 8, then three matches on Jan. 15 and Jan. 29 to win the Brand Open and the Great Plains Open, respectively. Before Nebraska-Browne was an All-American and a two-time state champion at Plattsmouth High School for Coach Kyle Bluhn. Browne was a four-time state finalist at Plattsmouth, and wrestled to a career record of 138-6. Personal-The son of Thayes and Bradley Browne, Brandon was born in Omaha, Neb., on April 10, 1986. Foust finished sixth at the Kaufman-Brand Open in the 20-and-under division at 174 pounds, thanks to a 4-2 performance on Nov. 20. At the Great Plains Open, Foust finished third at 174 pounds by winning five of his six matches on Jan. 29. Before Nebraska-Foust was an all-state wrestler at 171 pounds for Coach Benny Coleman at Choctaw High School. Career Notes 2006-Rowe finished 12-4 in his first season of collegiate wrestling, including a pair of top-three finishes in three open tournament appearances. Rowe made his collegiate debut with a second-place finish at the Harold Nichols Open on Nov. 12. Career Notes Before Nebraska-Burroughs won the 2006 New Jersey state title at 135 pounds to cap a 35-2 senior season and a 115-20 career at Winslow Township High School. Burroughs, ranked seventh in the nation among 135-pound high school wrestlers by Intermat, was a three-time district champion and two-time regional champion for Head Coach Rick Koss. Career Notes Before Nebraska-The 2006 Illinois class AA state champion at Hononegah High School in Rockton, Ill., Dwyer finished his high school career with a record of 43-1. Dwyer was a runner-up at 152 pounds as a junior in 2005, finishing with a 35-6 record. Personal-Stephen, the son of David Dwyer and Lora Cook, was born March 2, 1988, in Rockford, Ill. He has two brothers, David, Jr., (21) and Matthew (15) and one sister, Natalie (19). He has not declared a major at NU.

Casey Gubbels-141Freshman� Randolph,�Neb.�(Randolph)

2006-07 Outlook Casey Gubbels (pronounced GOO-bulls) will likely redshirt at 141 pounds in his first year in the program.

Career Notes Before Nebraska-Gubbels was a two-time state champion with back-to-back undefeated seasons at Randolph High School. Gubbels was 40-0 with 31 pins, as he won the 140-pound state championship in 2006 after posting a perfect 38-0 record en route to the 135-pound crown in 2005. Gubbels took second at the Brute adidas Nationals in Lincoln, Neb., at 140 pounds in the summer of 2005. Personal-Casey was born Oct. 2, 1987 in Randolph, Neb. The son of Bill and Joan Gubbels, Casey has two brothers, Kyle (22) and Jared (15). Kyle was a two-year letterwinner in wrestling at Nebraska. Casey is a nutrition, exercise and health science major.

2006-07 Outlook In his first year in the program, Andy Johnson will likely redshirt at 165 pounds behind three-year starter Marc Harwood.

Career Notes Before Nebraska-Johnson capped a strong four-year career at Yankton High School with a dominant 34-0 senior season at 171 pounds for head Coach Ryan Hage. Among his 34 wins as a senior, 26 were by fall, setting a school record for pins in a season. Johnson was named the most outstanding wrestler at the 2006 South Dakota state championships. Johnson was also a state champion as a junior. Personal-Andy is the son of Kim and Bret Johnson and was born Apr. 5, 1988 in Bryant, S.D. He has two brothers, Gene (21) and Tyler (20). Before Nebraska-Jonas was a three-time state champion for Kapaun-Mt. Carmel High School, the alma mater of NU All-American wrestler Jacob Klein. Jonas won the Class 5-A 160-pound state title as both a junior and a senior, along with claiming the 145-pound crown as a freshman. He added a runner-up finish at 160 as a sophomore. Jonas wrestled to a 43-1 record in both his junior and senior seasons. Personal-Frank was born Oct. 28, 1987, in Wichita, Kan. The son of Pam and Pat Jonas, Frank has two brothers, Tim (23) and Gavin (21) and one sister, Carrie (24), and is majoring in history at Nebraska.

Bobby Laraway-174Freshman� Union,�N.J.�(St.�Benedict’s�Prep)

2006-07 Outlook A national prep champion at 171 pounds, Bobby Laraway will push for varsity time at 174 pounds, as Nebraska looks to fill the spot left by the graduation of two-time All-American Jacob Klein.

Before Nebraska-Laraway capped an outstanding high school career with a 44-4 record, after earning a career mark of 162-33 at St. Benedict’s Prep in New Jersey. Laraway was also accomplished on the national stage, winning the national prep championship at 171 pounds. For his efforts, Laraway was the 12th-ranked 171-pound high school wrestler in the nation according to Intermat. Personal-The son of Barry and Sherri Laraway, Bobby was born May 17, 1988, in Livingston, N.J. He has one brother, Vinnie (16), and two sisters, Nikkie (13) and Alexi (12). Bobby has not yet declared a major at Nebraska.

Derek Moyer-133Freshman� Oskaloosa,�Iowa�(Oskaloosa)

2006-07 Outlook Derek Moyer will likely provide depth at 133 pounds for Nebraska in his first year in the program. Derek joins his brother Dominick as one of three sets of brothers on the 2006-07 squad.

Before Nebraska-A three-time state champion at Oskaloosa High School for Coach Jason Wedgbury, Moyer capped his career at OHS with an undefeated season, winning all 43 matches as a senior. Moyer closed his career with a 143-10 record and was named a high school All-American by Wrestling USA Magazine. Moyer earned a fifth-place finish at Greco-Roman Junior Nationals. Personal-The son of Dennis and Dorsha Moyer, Derek was born Sept. 17, 1987 in Pella, Iowa. He has one brother, Dominick (23), who is a member of the NU wrestling team. 2006-07 Outlook Peter Roto will look to develop as a wrestler and add depth in his first year in the program at 133 pounds. Career Notes Before Nebraska-Roto was a three-year letterwinner at Palatine High School for Coach Dan Collins. As a junior, he won the 140-pound championship in the Berman Holiday Wrestling Classic, hosted by Palatine High School. Roto also lettered in football at PHS. Personal-Peter was born in Evanston, Ill., on Jan. 25, 1988. He is the son of Marianne and Rick Roto, and has two sisters, Stephanie (16) and Christine (14) and one brother, Nick (22). Peter is majoring in English education at Nebraska.

2006-07 Outlook Curtis Salazar will push returning starter and NCAA qualifier Robert Sanders for dual matches at 149 pounds in his first year in the program.

Career Notes Before Nebraska-Salazar was a three-time state champion and a four-time top-three finisher for head coach Mike Caciari at Valley High School. Salazar wrestled to a 153-6 career record and capped his career with a 95-match winning streak, including the 145-pound class 3A state championship as a senior, the 135-pound crown after a 39-0 junior season, and the 130-pound title as a sophomore to close a 39-2 record. Salazar finished third as a freshman at 112 pounds. Personal-The son of Ernie and Kathy Salazar, Curtis was born in Greeley, Colo., on Sept. 24, 1987. He has one sister, Cassidy (24), and two brothers, Cameron (21) and Corey (16). Curtis is a business administration major at Nebraska.

Career Notes Before Nebraska-Sanders was a three-time state champion for Blanding San Juan High School in Blanding, Utah, as he wrestled for his father and coach, Robert Sanders. Paul finished off his high school wrestling career with a 52-2 senior season and the state championship at 152 pounds. A four-time state finalist, Sanders finished his high school career with a record of 166-11. Personal-The son of Robert and Leslie Sanders, Paul was born on Feb, 12, 1988. Career Notes Before Nebraska-Schaefer was part of four Class B state championship teams at Omaha Skutt Catholic. Schaefer won the 189-pound championship as a senior to cap a 41-2 season. 2006-07 Outlook One of the most decorated high school wrestlers in the history of the state of Nebraska, Vacanti will likely redshirt in his first season at NU.

Career Notes Before Nebraska-Vacanti was the 13th four-time state champion wrestler in the history of Nebraska high school wrestling at Papillion-La Vista High School for Coach Jeff Kupfer. Vacanti wrestled to a 128-1 career record for the Monarchs and was ranked third by Intermat among the nation’s 140-pound wrestlers. In his 35-0 junior season, Vacanti pinned all 35 opponents he faced. Vacanti was named the 2006 Dave Schultz Award winner as the best high school wrestler in the state of Nebraska. Personal-The son of Chris and Lisa Vacanti, Matt was born in Omaha, Neb., on Sept. 1, 1988. Career Notes Before Nebraska-Ward was a member of three state championship teams at Mount Saint Joseph’s Prep for Coach Kirk Salvo. With a career record of 130-36, Ward closed his high school career as a co-captain and state champion in his senior year with a 45-7 record as Mt. Saint Josephs placed second at state. Ward, who took second his junior year and third his sophomore year at state, was named by the Baltimore Sun to the All-Metro wrestling team and an All-Academic honoree. Personal-The son of Kelly and Tammy Ward, Alex was born Oct. 1, 1987, in Des Moines, Iowa. His father, Kelly, was a national champion wrestler at Iowa State and a former Nebraska assistant coach.
