Welcome to

The Trenton Area Chamber of Commerce would like to welcome you to the area. Whether you have chosen Trenton in which to raise a family, are considering reloca-tion here, or just visiting the area, you will enjoy the small town, friendly atmos-phere that locals enjoy. Trenton is located at the junction of Highways 6 and 65 in north central Missouri. We are about 90 miles NE of Kansas City, Missouri, and about 30 miles south of the Missouri/Iowa state line. Our well-developed street system is well maintained by our city street department. Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT) addresses state highway construction and maintenance for the highways that go through and/or near Trenton. Trenton Municipal Airport provides local air service and is the only jet-sized airport in the area. The airport has a 4,400 foot lighted runway, provides jet fuel, and has a hanger space available for rent. International travelers will find their wings at Kan-sas City International Airport, located in KC, MO.

We currently have over 200 active businesses comprising the Trenton community. Many of them are small, family-owned businesses. The foundation of the Trenton business climate is provided from Modine Manufacturing and ConAgra Foods. Modine Manufacturing produces radiators and other automotive components. Con-Agra’s core competency is food production employing over 400 persons locally. Other major employers include: North Central Missouri College, Wright Memorial Hospital, Green Hills Community Action Agency, Trenton Hy-Vee, the Trenton R-IX School District, the City of Trenton and Trenton Municipal Utilities (TMU). We are also blessed to have two thriving major media outlets in the Republican Times Newspa-per and the PAR Broadcast Company which includes KTTN-FM, KTTN-AM, and KGOZ.

Congratulations Trenton Area Chamber of Commerce

For 100 years of service to our community!

Trenton Downtown Improvement Association (TDIA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was established in 1991 by a group of civic leaders and downtown business owners. TDIA’s focus is the revitalization of the downtown area of Trenton. Revitalization is accom-plished by:

• Preservation of historic buildings, thus providing available space for businesses and retail merchants;

• Sponsoring of community activities and events in the downtown area; • Improvement of the appearance of downtown through streetscape.

Image plays a very important role in a person’s feel-ings towards a community and a downtown that is well maintained and utilized creates a positive atti-tude and promotes economic growth. Throughout the years TDIA has been involved in pro-jects such as: Rehabilitation of the Plaza Hotel and Theater; Installation of new sidewalks and period lighting in the downtown area; Establishment of a Re-volving Loan Fund available for the improvement downtown buildings; Placement of “Welcoming” ban-ners; Sprucing up planters with new plants.

TDIA has had a director since January of 2010. The director works to increase the commu-nity’s awareness of TDIA’s goal of improving the downtown area thus creating a desirable environment for people to work, live, shop, and enjoy. The director also works with down-town businesses and building owners to foster economic growth in the downtown area. Cur-rent director efforts have included creating an online presence for downtown businesses and TDIA through the use of websites, blogs and social media. TDIA has assisted with and co-sponsored downtown events such as: the annual Easter Egg Hunt, the Colgate Country Showdown, the downtown Independence Day Celebration, World War II Recognition, the annual chili cook off and the Downtown Christmas. In addition to sponsored events, TDIA provides support to the Friends of the Arts and the Grundy County Museum in their downtown events. The Trenton Downtown Improvement Association is currently looking to expand their part-nership beyond downtown business owners by reaching out to the community as a whole. Downtown Trenton belongs to all residents and is the “Hub” of our city. By becoming a partner, a business or individual will be a part of the revitalization effort and have a voice in making downtown a place to be proud of. The TDIA monthly partner meeting is held the third Tuesday of each month at 5:15 pm. The meeting is open to the public. If you are in-terested in becoming a TDIA partner or inquiring about our downtown please contact the TDIA director at (660) 339-7606 or send an email to [email protected]. You may also learn more about TDIA at tdiatrentonmo.blogspot.com.

The Grundy County Museum presents the life ex-periences of its citizens through the tools, equip-ment, pictures, documents, appliances, weapons, symbols and technology displayed in three museum buildings. In these buildings you can feel the past as you read the accounts of our community’s his-tory, touch 20th century tools/technology and envi-sion the challenges faced by our parents and grand-parents. Museums are time machines where the past returns when we take the time to closely examine the equip-ment and technology found in homes and busi-

nesses as our forbearers worked and played when they were young. Regular museum hours are 2:00 - 5:00pm weekends and holidays. Appointments can be made for organizations to tour at other times. This year’s feature exhibits are: Railroading in Grundy County (displayed Memorial Day thru July 29) and Civil War in Grundy County (displayed August 11 thru October 28). Museum is located at 1100 Mable St.

Nestled in the rolling, glaciated hills of north-central Missouri, Crowder State Park is special for several reasons. The park memorializes a notable Missourian, Maj. Gen. Enoch Herbert Crowder, and offers a retreat of rugged slopes and stately forests in a region otherwise con-sisting of generally level farmland. The park was created in 1938 when the state legislature appropriated $10,000 to purchase a tract of 640 acres located three miles west of Trenton, the county seat of Grundy County. Just to the southwest of the park is the hamlet of Edinburg. The park's natural environment is unusual for northern Missouri. It is covered with a man-tle of rich glacial soils that nurture thick forests of sugar maple, and stately white and red oaks. The Thompson River, named for Dr. William Preston Thompson, the ruins of whose ca. 1833 brick home still stand within park boundaries (the home itself is now owned by the Friends of the Thompson House), winds its way through the park. Bordering it are steep-walled valleys and ravines where basswoods and bur oaks tower over an understory of dog-wood, serviceberry and bladdernut. The rich bottomlands along this meandering river are accented by stands of cottonwood, river birch, silver maple and sycamore trees that shade a valley floor where the rare ostrich fern grows in company with carpets of swamp buttercups, touch-me-nots, sweet williams and Dutchman's breeches. On well-shaded sandstone ledges, carved by the Thompson River, lady slipper orchids and maidenhair ferns cling to a delicate existence. Several mounds of prehistoric Native American origin are also found in the park, and at the time the first American settlers showed up, the area was still being used by Sac and Fox Na-tive American tribes. Presently at 1,912 acres, the park offers many opportunities for such recreational and lei-sure activities as camping, picnicking, hiking trails, horseback riding trails, fishing, boating and swimming. There are 42 campsites in the park, 32 of which have electrical hookups. The camping area features modern restrooms, hot showers, a dumping station, laundromat and playground equipment. Camp Grand River, a group camp, is available to nonprofit organizations, and offers sleep-ing cabins, a dining lodge with kitchen, a recreation hall and outdoor recreational facilities, including a play court and swimming beach. The 18-acre Crowder Lake offers swimming and boating, and is regularly stocked with fish to tempt the angler. For swimmers, there is a

sand beach and bathhouse. Twenty-five pic-nic sites are located throughout the park. For larger family gatherings, an enclosed shelter with electricity is available, as are two open shelters; these can be reserved by contacting the park superintendent. A paved tennis court is another of the recreational offerings. The park offers several forest trails for hikers and bikers including one that leads to the Thompson River.

Trenton R-IX Schools Trenton R-IX School District offers a wide variety of educational opportunities in an effort to accom-plish its mission: to prepare all students to be CA-PABLE, CONTRIBUTING, CARING participants in an ever-changing world. The district is proud to have earned the Distinction in Performance recog-nition from the Missouri Department of Elemen-tary and Secondary Education for the past two consecutive years.

Trenton R-IX is home of a new Early Childhood Education Center. Completed in 2011, the center houses four preschool classrooms (serving 90+ students), an activ-ity center, and a Parents as Teachers office. High quality staff, state of the art tech-nology, and research-based curriculum, combine to provide outstanding early learn-ing opportunities for young children. S.M. Rissler Elementary School serves students kindergarten through fourth grade. Students receive outstanding academic instruction and learn developmentally ap-propriate behaviors through the school-wide implementation of Positive Behavior Supports. The elementary school employs two full-time guidance counselors and staffs a 13:1 student to teacher ratio. Trenton Middle and High School, which share a campus, have benefitted from recent facility improvements. The shared music building was recently expanded and reno-vated. The high school gym was expanded to include a new classroom, wrestling room, and weight room. The Trenton R-IX Success Center serves both the middle and high school. The Center is an alternative learning facility to provide students with a quality, accredited education through non-traditional approaches. Trenton High School is an A+ school. It works jointly with Grand River Vocational School and North Central Missouri College to offer many advanced educational op-portunities to students. Both the middle and high schools take great pride in stu-dents’ academic achievements, but also promote the social growth of students through participation in extra and co-curricular activities such as sports, fine arts, FFA, FCCLA, and academic teams. Just over 1200 students attend classes and about 170 people are employed at Tren-ton R-IX which is fully accredited by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. More detailed information about the district can be found online at www.trentonr9.k12.mo.us.

Great things continue to happen in Trenton! 2012 has proved to be a prosperous year thus far; we have seen many new projects begin, projects com-ing to a close and many new and exciting projects in the works!

The Adams Park Apartments project was completed and now provides 35 low to middle income senior housing apartments for our community. The project involved renovating an 88 year old school building into apartments with the goal of preserving as much of the historic landmark as possible. Funding was at-tained through a Historic Preservation Grant, which involved strenuous guide-lines on the reconstruction/preservation efforts. An Open House and Dedica-tion was held on May 19th complete with a luncheon and tours.

Another proud moment for the City of Trenton was the Flag Pole Dedica-tion Ceremony that took place on Memorial Day. Upon learning that our flag pole that had stood at 5-Points for over 140 years was structurally unsound, a group of citizens formed a Flag Pole Committee and began efforts in raising the funds to replace the flag pole. In less than 3 months, the committee was suc-cessful at securing enough donations to pay for a new flag pole, flag, and light-ing. The new 12 x 18 ft flag was an awesome sight when seen hoisted on that beautiful Memorial Day morning. What an honor to our troops, citizens, and freedom!

Trenton is seeing new businesses, expansions and new construction. The former Pamida store was purchased by ShopKo; Hanger is located in the East-gate Shopping Center specializing in prosthetics and orthotics; Cara McClellan has constructed a new building for her insurance agency on 9th Street. New sin-gle and multi family housing projects are under construction, including the new 21 apartment Lamplighter complex on Oklahoma Avenue and Sunnyview is add-ing 16 new assisted living apartments.

Many activities were held in the downtown area that brought visitors into the community. Among them were Christmas activities complete with living win-dow displays, an Easter Egg Hunt in Sesquicentennial Park, a chili cook-off, Art in the Park Bed Races, and many Elk’s Lodge-sponsored events! Events throughout the City took place as well including the Annual Gooseberry Festi-val, North Central Missouri Fair and the Missouri Day Celebration and Band Day Contest. The Missouri Day Festival is known to bring thousands of visitors to our community and is one of the biggest and most well known festivals in our area.

We are pleased with the forward progress the City of Trenton has achieved and we look forward to continuing this trend in 2013 and beyond! Be a part of the great things happening in Trenton. For more information, go to www.trentonmo.com or call 660-359-4310.

The past two years have been exciting ones for North Central Missouri College: record-setting donations for the Capital Campaign, dedication of the new Barton Farm Campus, strong student enrollment, and a successful college-wide review by a national collegiate accrediting agency, the Higher Learning Commis-sion.

The Invest in the Vision Major Gift Campaign, a fundraising initiative by the NCMC Foundation, reached nearly $14 million by April 2012. The campaign, which began in March 2005, was able to sustain its mo-mentum during recent economic downturns to eventually arrive at this astounding total. Development

Director Steve Maxey was quick to credit much of the success to a dedicated campaign committee, strong foundation board, a multitude of volunteers, an extremely supportive college family and hundreds of contributors who recognized the im-portance of identified initiatives and the history of the College as good stewards of their dollars.

The construction of the new Elizabeth and Arthur Barton Farm Campus was a primary focus of the fund drive. After months of planning, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the site of the new campus in fall 2010 with Governor Jay

Nixon in attendance. The first two buildings, the Lager Laboratory of Plant and Energy Science and the Metcalf Mechanical Building, along with the Whan Family Greenhouse, were dedicated and in use for the fall term 2011; this was immediately followed by construction of the Kuttler Animal Science Complex.

Several large gifts to the capital campaign specifically designated for the new Barton Campus helped to boost the fund totals. Proceeds from the largest gift ever presented to NCMC, a 312-acre farm with an esti-mated value of $1.4 million, will be used to support the Barton Farm Campus for the next ten years. At the end of that period, the College will be able to sell the land if it so desires. Local residents John and Delores Kuttler made this gift to NCMC in October 2011. Another large gift for the campaign from the es-tate of the late Dr. and Mrs. James Whitley of Columbia was announced in February 2012. The College was fortunate to receive many other sizeable gifts for Barton Campus in the past two years.

“Just because we have reached this $14 million milestone doesn’t mean the campaign ends or the need for community support ceases,” said Maxey. “A plan to restore Geyer Hall, the anchor building of NCMC’s downtown campus, is next on our list as very important to the ongoing development of North Central Mis-souri College. Also, a renewed emphasis will be placed on increasing the student scholarship fund in the coming year.” He continued, “NCMC is fortunate to have both a strong and caring family of alumni and friends whose support has resulted in helping our college to expand its facilities and develop new pro-grams of study. Cross Hall was an outstanding example of how this commitment and financial support can achieve exceptional results, and now we can say the same for our new Barton Farm Campus.”

In spite of continued decreasing state appropriations, enrollments at Missouri community colleges have been holding steady. NCMC’s head count has been about 1,800 students per semester. Dean of Students Dr. Kristen Alley commented, “Decreasing state dollars have created sparse campus resources, and com-munity colleges tend to be the hardest hit when cuts are made to higher education as they rely heavily on state funds to keep tuition low.” Despite these challenges, more than 350 students received degrees and certificates at commencement ceremonies in May 2012.

Five consultant-evaluators from the Higher Learning Commission, a national accrediting group, visited NCMC in February 2012 to review its programs and services. This process is necessary at least every ten years to assure the public that NCMC is a quality institution and can remain eligible to receive federal funds. A strong Self-Study document, which took a steering committee four years to write, was used as the basis for the visit. Dean of Instruction Dr. Jamie Hooyman chaired the development of the 250-page document, which clearly defined NCMC’s mission as well as reviewed its strengths and weaknesses. Pre-liminary reports from the visit indicate that the visiting team will give NCMC a very favorable outcome.

NCMC’s vision, NCMC—where lifelong learners emerge, has established a strong foundation for the suc-cess of many, many area residents, and we expect this tradition to continue. Come visit us and experience the excitement and opportunities that are available to you!

Fairs and Festivals Annual celebrations are highlighted by the annual Missouri Day Festival which has recently celebrated its 27th year. The festival includes a marching band festival which provides evalua-tive events in parade, indoor auxiliary, indoor drum line, and field show. Craft Village is home to over 150 vendors with food, antiques, handmade crafts, home décor, and more. Entertain-

In addition to the Missouri Day Festival, the North Central Missouri Fair Board holds its annual fair and livestock show each year. The grandstand is home to professional talent, demolition derbies, ATV/motocross racing, bull riding, rodeos, and mu-sical entertainment of all types. The Gooseberry Festival is held the third weekend of

Friends of the Arts GRUNDY COUNTY FRIENDS OF THE ARTS is well known for the quality of the cultural events the organization brings to the area. Established in 1966, the arts council became a 501 (c) 3 in 1969 and has always maintained a close association with the Chamber of Commerce. The Mission Statement of Grundy County Friends of the Arts is to PRESENT affordable entertainment, PRO-MOTE education in the realm of fine arts and PROVIDE exposure to the arts in its many forms to residents of Grundy County and the surrounding area.

Grundy County Friends of the Arts recognizes that children and young peo-ple are the future of the community and the organization works closely with the area schools. Each year GCFOA schedules at least one, but usu-ally several, programs which present an assembly or master class in the schools as well as an evening concert. The Trenton Rotary Club has gener-ously donated money to help with these school programs with a matching grant from the Missouri Arts Council. GCFOA collaborates with the Tren-ton R-IX School District, as well as other area schools.

The area has had numerous young people who have gone on to have successful careers in the Arts. They often return to the area to share their talents and some others have stayed in the community to teach art and music in the local schools. A program called Art Talks was started by some GCFOA Board members in one school and is expanding to oth-ers. Local artists show prints of artworks and have conversations with students about the art, the artist and what the artist is trying to convey. They help the students learn to relate personally to the various works of art. North Central Missouri College and GCFOA have a reciprocal agreement by which NCMC students are admitted to concerts free with their student ID. GCFOA is also a supporter of the Dorris Rider Art Gallery which is located on the NCMC campus and they part-nered with NCMC to develop this Gallery.

Each season Grundy County Friends of the Arts (GCFOA) presents programs in a variety of musical genres from country to classical and everything in between. Groups and individual performers such as choir, orchestra, dancers, handbells, instrumentalists and vocalists have appeared. Magicians & storytellers have even been in-cluded as well as many other art forms.

GCFOA also tries to include music from other parts of the world. Recently artists playing marimbas with music of Mexico and South America, Celtic step dancing of Ireland and drums of the Caribbean and Africa, appeared in evening concerts, as well as school assemblies. GCFOA has been able to bring some well-known entertainers to the area, including: Larry Gatlin, Dino Kart-sonakis, The Lennon Brothers, Moe Bandy, Up with People, and the U.S. Army Field Band & Chorus. Many shows which are very popular in Branson have traveled to Grundy County to entertain the community. Grundy County Friends of the Arts is pleased to collaborate with the Grundy County Museum, as well as the Friends of the Library. The programs in collaboration with Friends of the Library are presented in the charming Hoover Theater which is located in the historic Jewett Norris Library. The goal of Grundy County Friends of the Arts is to present programs in diverse forms of art and to keep the ticket prices affordable for all. Season tickets are sold for the complete season which makes the price of each concert more economical. Tickets are also available at the door. Each year a fund drive is held and local busi-nesses and individuals are always generous with their support. Missouri Arts Council (MAC) and several other organizations and foundations provide grant money, as well. An important quality of a small community in rural America is the way the citizens work together to enrich the lives of their children and to leave a wonderful legacy for many years to come. Grundy County Friends of the Arts has been a well-respected part of the community for 46 years and hopes to continue to provide quality art ex-periences for many years to come.
