Welcome to the season of Advent! As the calendar turns to December, we are excited to prepare for

the celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. “And in the same region there were

shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over the flock by night. And an Angel of the Lord appeared

to them and the Glory of the Lord shone around them and they were filled with great fear. And the

Angel said to them “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all peo-ple. For unto you is born this day in the city of Da-

vid, a Savior who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you, you will find a baby wrapped in

swaddling clothes lying in a manager. And sudden-ly there was with the Angel a multitude of Heaven-

ly host praising God and saying “Glory to God in the highest and on Earth peace among those with

whom He is pleased.”

Luke 2: 8-14

Yes, we rejoice this season in the birth of the

Prince of Peace, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who provides the light in the darkness of our trou-

bled world.

We ask that you continue to keep Saxony, our stu-

dents, faculty, and staff in your prayers. At Saxony Lutheran High School we worship and praise God

everyday! This would not be possible without your support for our exceptional staff and out-standing students! Our prayer is for God to contin-

ue to bless us and for peace on Earth this Christ-mas season.

Merry Christmas to all!

An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they

were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will

cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you:

He is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths

and lying in a manager.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the

angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven,

And on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

~ Luke 2: 9-14

Wishing you and your family a blessed Christmas season as we celebrate the birth

of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ in the New Year!

School Notes - Winter Weather Information:

When it comes to the cancellation of school, we will attempt to make that decision as early as possi-

ble for everyone's safety and convenience. In making that decision, we will always err on the side

of safety for our families. Since the weather can vary greatly across the Saxony attendance area, if

we have school but you feel it is unsafe for your student to come to school because of weather relat-

ed road conditions, please keep them at home. Just call the office to let us know and the absence

will not be counted against your student. The safety of all of our students and families is a top pri-

ority for Saxony. If we cancel school, it will be announced through the various media outlets in our

area. We encourage you to sign up for notifications from KFVS12 or the Southeast Missourian. We

will send information through PlusPortals and via our Saxony Lutheran App as well. If you have not

done so, please download our app to receive the most up-to-date information as quickly as possi-

ble. Weather conditions could also be such that we would have a delayed start or early dismissal. If

we have a delayed start, it will be a two hour delay and school will begin at 9:50 a.m. with home-

room. With an early dismissal, we will make every effort to make that decision in a timely manner

that allows for the safe transportation home for everyone.

From the Counselor to the Parents:

The Game of High School, Part 2 Last month I discussed how high school is like a game; students have goals, there are rules to “winning” and there are strategies that can help students come out on top. Just as in many games, the outcome is not solely, or even primarily, determined by natural-born skills or abili-ties. Picture a high school locker room, the team ready to go out for an important game. The players are gathered to hear some inspiring words from the coach, words that will fire them up for the contest ahead. Imagine the coach says something like this: “All right, team. We’re going to go out there, and honestly, we’re going to lose. Bad. You just aren’t good enough to win. Try not to bleed on your uniforms.” That team will not go through the doors with confidence, excitement, or motivation. That team may not go through the doors at all! Too often, I hear the same sort of things from students.

“I’m just not a math person.” “I’ve never been able to memorize things.” “I can’t do art.” And even, sometimes, from well-meaning parents. “You know, my child has never been good with tests.” “I don’t want my child to have to struggle.” Attitude makes a huge difference in student success in and out of the classroom. I specif-

ically talk to students about growth mindset (Google it!) which, in a nutshell, is the belief that our brains and abilities can continue to grow throughout our lives, that we can learn new things, and that failure is an opportunity for growth. In fact, in many cases making mistakes is the only way to learn.

It is most certainly true that students have different strengths. Some seem a natural at

traditional school activities, others have a gift for arts, and others make athletics look easy. However, that does not mean that students who have to work a bit harder should not try at all.

When children are young, we don’t expect them to be able to walk on the first try. We do

expect a lot of falls and stumbles. So, we all need to give ourselves a break. Consider online gaming: players do not try the game once, fail to conquer the scary monster (or whatever) and never play again. No, they play again and again, using what they’ve learned in their previous at-tempts to be more successful the next time. We need to have an attitude that treats failure as learning, not as a disaster.

I also encourage students to use two simple vocabulary changes that will make a huge im-

pact. As adults, we can help children make attitude shifts with these reminders. Add the word yet, as in “I can’t do this math problem – yet.” Or, “I’m no good at art – yet.” MORE Replace have to with get to. “Do we have to learn quadratic equations?” “No, you get to learn quadratic equations.” (As a regular classroom math teacher, I used this type of exchange so frequently that students began to mimic me with each other. One of my proudest teaching memories!) As I wrote last month, students have more control than they might think in their school experi-ences. Learning and practice attitudes of growth will help them win the game!
