Dear Parents & Community,

International Day of People with Disability

Yesterday, November 3, was International Day of People with Disability

According to the disability charity Scope, the social model of disability proposes that disability is caused by the way society is organised, rather than by a person’s impairment or difference. It looks at ways of removing barriers that restrict life choices for people with disability. When barriers are removed, people with disability become independent and equal in society, with choice and control over their own lives.

While the medical model focuses on what is ‘wrong’ with the person, the social model of disability says that disability is caused by the way society is organised, specifically because of the assumption that all people’s needs are the same. It says that disability occurs because society has focused exclusively on one group’s needs — those who do not have impairment. The social model shows that impairment need not lead to disability, and focuses on how to remove the disabling features of contemporary society.

I am proud to lead a school that continually strives to reduce these disabling features through modification of the curriculum, modifications to learning environments and by teaching our students to celebrate the differences of individuals. believe in making Epping North a socially and educationally inclusive environment for all of our students and community members. Student Elections Our Year 5 students have recently finalised the 2019 student election process. Our new, 2019 leadership team will be announced on Presentation Day, December 12. As Principal of Epping North, I am incredibly proud of each and every one of our students who stood for election. They took great care in crafting heartfelt, meaningful leadership speeches and have clearly taken time to consider their future leadership roles within the school. Without doubt, they delivered the finest leadership speeches that I have seen in schools. I would like to publicly recognise Mrs Anita Bareham who organised the 2019 student leadership process and supported the students so capably. Anita’s hard work in leading the students really was evidenced by the calibre of their speeches and campaigns.

Painting Those of you who have been around the school lately, may well have remarked upon the smell of fresh paint! 5 of our classrooms and parts of the office block have been receiving a mini makeover over the past few weeks. I know our students have been interested to watch the process unfold and it certainly is a great improvement.

New Demountable Work begins today in readiness for the delivery of our new demountable building which will be positioned next

to the hall. Over the coming week, piers will be installed, as well as power, data and water services. Following

this, the building will be delivered and commissioned. It is anticipated that the work will be finalised prior to

the end of the 2018 school year.

New Band Committee Members Required for 2019

We've had yet another outstanding year with the ENPS band program and it’s the people of the band committee who ensure everything runs smoothly. For various reasons, some of our committee members will not continue next year so we are now seeking volunteers to help with a few roles on the band committee for next year. The roles that need to be filled are Concert Band Co-ordinator, Senior Band Co-ordinator, Instrument Registrar and Music Librarian. Please seriously consider volunteering for one of these roles to help share the load of running the band program.

EPPING NORTH PUBLIC SCHOOL – WORKING BEE Come and get your hands dirty at our next working bee and be treated to a sausage sizzle whilst we sit back and admire our hard work. No skills necessary, just a willingness to get stuck in and help keep our grounds looking beautiful. The P&C will hold 4 working bees a year. These will take place on a Sunday. Helpers are welcome anytime between 12pm and 3pm. When: Sunday, 9th December Where: Under the COLA next to the canteen. We are looking to build on the great work that has already been done across the school.

At Epping North Public School, we are so lucky to have such beautiful grounds. We are also very fortunate to have Glenn Gallagher who does a brilliant job maintaining our lawns etc. Any help we can offer him puts that extra shine on the school and makes it a much more enjoyable place for us all. Our working bee efforts do not go un-noticed and are appreciated by all the students and teaching staff. This term we need help with:

• Fixing the boat in Koala Grove

• Prepare for the buddy bench

• General Tidy Up WHAT TO BRING We have a small supply of brooms, rakes, shovels etc. but you may like to bring your own gardening gloves & rakes. Wearing a hat & sunscreen is recommended. Kids are welcome to come and join in. If you are able to attend, please notify Justin Broad (P&C Grounds Maintenance Coordinator) so we can plan ahead. Please feel free to send through any suggestions for future projects.
