Preface

A transparent and accountable system of Governance can be met to a large

extent with the availability of reliable statistics. Department of Economics & Statistics

has taken various steps and make continuous efforts to improve statistical system in the

State to meet the increasing needs of diverse users. Panchayat Level Statistics is one of

the initiatives in this line. In this publication, the available data at Grama Panchayat

level compiled at district and published in every five year interval to enable data for

micro level planning. We have already released three publications in this series in 1996,

2001 and 2006 respectively.

This Publication ‘Panchayat Level Statistics-2011’ Kasargod District is the

fourth publication in this series. A team of officers in the Taluk Statistical Offices and

District Statistical Office of Pathanamthitta District under the supervision of Deputy

Director Sri. Raveendran Paleridid a tremendous job for the collection of data needed

for this publication.

Executive Summury

i. Kasargode District came in to existence on 24th Mayr, 1984 vide GO (MS)

No.520/84/RD dated 19.05.1984. The District comprises of a single revenue division

Kasaragode consisting of 2 Taluks and 127. Out of 127 villages, 82 villages are in

Kasargode Taluk and 45 villages in Hosdurg Taluk.

ii. The District is bound in the north by Mangaloor district of Karnataka state, on the

west by Arabian Sea, on the south by Kannur District and on the east by Kodagu and

Dakshina Kannada districts of Karnataka state. The District lies between the north

latitudes 120 12’ and 120 48’ and the east longitudes 74052’and 750’20”.

iii. Kasaragode district consists of 3 Sub-micro Region namely Cannanore Coast,

Kasaragode Table Land and Peringom-Mattanur Undulating Upland. Cannanore

Coast lies as a narrow coastal strip on the western side of the District with a

maximum height of 87 m. Kasaragode Table Land region comprises of the whole

Kasaragode Taluk exept its western coastal area and north eastern part of Hosdurg

Taluk. The average height of this region is between 250m and 300m. Peringom-

Mattannur Undulating Upland region has undulating terrain with number of isolated

hills.

iv. Chandragiri River is the longest river in the District flowing 105 km originate in

Pattimala in Coorg Karnataka state. There are 11 other west flowing rivers together

enrich the water availability in the District.

v. As per 2011 census population in the District is about 3.9 percentage of the total

population of the State. Out of 13.07 lakhs population, 7.98 lakhs persons from rural

area and urban population is 5.09 lakhs. Child population in the age group 0-6 years

is about 11.92 percentage to total population. Similarly scheduled caste and

scheduled tribe population in the District are comes around 4.07 and 3.74 percentage

respectively. Female population in the District is outnumbered, ie, 51.92 percentage

of population in the District is females. But female population in the age group of 0-6

years is only 49 percentage of total population in the same age group.

vi. During the last decade literacy rate in the District has increased from 84.57 to 89.85.

Out of 269883 illiterates in the District 170296 is from rural area and 99587 persons

from urban area. Number of illiterates in the District is about 5.12 percentage of total

illiterates in the State.

vii. 2011 census data reveals, total workers in the District categorized under main workers

and marginal workers are 462998. Number of main workers in the District is 372700

and marginal workers are 90298. Total workers are categorized as cultivators,

agricultural labours, household industry workers and other workers. Female

participation in the work force in the District is around 29.75 percentage. But in the

household industry sector females dominated in the working force. Their share in the

household industry workers are 72.61 percentage, whereas in the State female

workers in the household industry is about 33.37 percentage. Percentage of marginal

workers in the District is about 3.94 of the State total, ie, 2289316. Number of non

workers in the District is 844377 which is around 3.87 percentage of the State total.

viii. Total geographical area of the District is 199166 hectres which comes around 5.12

percentage of the total geographical area of the State. Forest cover in the District is

2.82 percentage and land put to non agricultural use is about 13.47 percentage of the

total geographical area of the District. Net sown area in the District is 141948 hectres

comes about 6.85 percentage of the net sown area of the State.

ix. Major crops cultivated in the District are paddy, pepper, arecanut, cashew, coconut,

rubber etc. Area under paddy, pepper and cashew shows a declining trend and

extended the cultivated area of arecanut, coconut and rubber crops during 2010-11.

Rice production in the District is 1.88 percentage of total rice production of the State

in the same year. Out of the total rice production in the District nearly 60 percentage

is from autumn crop. Production of black pepper, banana, plantain and rubber

increased during 2010-11.

x. Animal husbandry plays an important role in generating employment and income to

the weaker sections of the population. Veterinary facilities are available in all

panchayats and municipalities in the District. As per Live Stock Census 2007 total

live stock population in the District is 134362 which contribute 3.75 percentage of

the total live stock population in the State.

xi. Passenger and goods mobility is mainly depend on roads and railways. Total length of

roads under various categories in the District are state highway 141.71 kms., major

district roads 1303.049 kms and other district roads 527.11 kms. The District is

connected with railway net work.

xii. Schooling facilities are available in all panchayats in the District. In primary level, out

of 270 schools 143 schools are under Government management, 112 schools under

private Aided management and 15 schools under private Un- aided management. 144

Upper Primary Schools and 140 High Schools serve the educational need of the

people in the District. CBSE and ICSE schools also played important role in the

education sector.

xiii. The District is generally considered as industrially backward. Available statistics

shows 5795 industrial units registered under SSI/ MSME act in the District in the

tune of total investment of 21788 lakhs and generated 31461 employment

opportunities.

xiv. The District has a good Banking network. State Bank group is having 17 branches in

the District. Other Nationalised Banks, Regional Rural Banks and Private sector

Banks have also operating their branches across the District. Nationalized Banks are

having 63 branches, scheduled Commercial Banks 74 branches, District Co operative

Bank 32 branches, Service Co operative Banks and Credit Societies 61 branches in

the District.
