Attention all bookworms!First, I was sorry to have to cancel the May event but nowhave TWO events planned before the end of the year. As

some book addicts can become over-ex-cited and not pay attention to the detail inthe small print, I shall remind you of eachone a little nearer the time but you maylike to pencil dates in your diary:Books in the Boat at the Marine Hotel,Saturday 21st December - all day 10am-4pm. As the Marine’s antiques/bric-a-bracshop will be having a special Winter Sol-stice opening for last minute shoppers, Ithought it a good opportunity to do a pre-Xmas stall myself - as we cannot expect

tropical sunshine (even if global warming accelerates) Ishall be sort of spreading out and infiltrating indoors "just afew small books on a small table". I have some nearly-newbooks, adult and children’s - newly published and somegolden oldies, which will make affordable presents (or buya few for yourself!) so do please look in. The weekend afterChristmas it will be back to the Usual Venue for the UsualTwo Days with hopefully the Usual Suspects assisting. Thanks to those who have already given me books and mag-azines for the charity table at the second event, and particularthanks to my glorious Transport Fleet without whom Ishould be walking up and down the road 364 days a year justto get sufficient stock to my various venues.Looking forward to seeing "regulars" and visiting book-worms from further afield plus those who reckon they don’tlike books!

East Neuk Community Emergency PlanningTeam

(ENCEPT)

ENCEPT has been chosen to benefit fromthe next round of the Co-op Local Commu-nity Fund. The funding round opened on 27October 2019 and will close on 24 October2020.

Every time a member buys selected own-brand products andservices, 1% of the money they spend goes to local causesin their community, so it’s important you raise your profileand encourage members to choose your cause.Should you wish to support ENCEPT, please encourage

friends and family to become a Co-op Member. They canjoin online at https://membership.coop.co.uk/new-registra-tion Once registered, the ENCEPT cause can be chosen at:

https://membership.coop.co.uk/causes/39141

About the ENCEPT cause:The East Neuk of Fife consists of a group of small townsand villages. We are in a remote area and resources to assistin the event of any emergency are over 20 miles away. Thepurpose of the East Neuk Community Emergency PlanningTeam (ENCEPT) is to help communities and individuals inthe East Neuk prepare for, respond to and recover fromemergencies in a way that complements the work of theemergency services and promotes safety to the most vulner-able. To do this ENCEPT has developed the East Neuk Com-munity Emergency Plan. We intend supplying eachcommunity with basic kits to enable them to cope in theevent of a community emergency. Volunteers will work in-dependently to ensure a co-ordinated response is providedin the event of a community emergency.

UK heading for ‘mountain of waste’ unless it can recycle EV batteries

Scientists have urged government and industry to improve electric vehicle (EV) battery recycling methods and prevent a‘mountain of waste’ in the coming years.A review of lithium-ion battery recycling by researchers in Birmingham, Newcastle and Leicester suggests that while EVshave several benefits around cutting nitrogen dioxide (NO2) pollution, there are huge potential negatives surrounding how thebatteries are dealt with when they come to their natural end.Based on the 1 million electric cars sold in 2017, researchers calculated that 250,000 tonnes or half a million cubic metres ofunprocessed pack waste will result when these vehicles reach the end of their lives. The study says there a number of challenges that government and industry need to overcome, including identifying second useapplications for end of life batteries, developing new rapid repair and recycling methods for batteries and designing new pro-cesses to open up and separate end-of-life batteries. The study was published yesterday (November 6) in the 150th-anniversary issue of Nature.Dr Gavin Harper, Faraday research fellow at the University of Birmingham, is lead author on the paper. He said: ‘The recy-cling challenge is not straightforward: there is enormous variety in the chemistries, shapes and designs of lithium-ion batteriesused in EVs.‘Individual cells are formed into modules, which are then assembled into battery packs. To recycle these efficiently, they mustbe disassembled and the resulting waste streams separated.‘As well as lithium, these batteries contain a number of other valuable metals, such as cobalt, nickel and manganese, and thereis the potential to improve the processes which are currently used to recover these for reuse.’Professor Paul Christensen of Newcastle University added: ‘These batteries contain huge amounts of power and at the mo-ment we are still relatively unprepared about how we deal with them when they reach the end of their life.’In August, the Faraday Institution, which is a government-backed research institute for energy, announced £55m to supportprojects which will help improve the durability of EV batteries. The projects funded include Nextrode, a University of Oxford-led project geared towards upgrading electrodes for lithium-ionbatteries, potentially giving EVs more range and making batteries more durable. Two of the projects will look at alternatives to traditional lithium-ion batteries – a University of St. Andrews-led project willspeed up the development of sodium-ion batteries, while UCL will lead a research project on lithium-sulfur (Li-S) technolo-gies.The five new projects join the Faraday Institution’s four existing projects, which were launched early in 2018 and focus onimproving current lithium-ion battery technologies.

The Royal Burgh of Crail and District Community Council NotesNext Community Council Meeting 27 January

Outdoor NurseryFife Council has decided that there is nowhere in Crail suitable for an outdoor nursery. Several sites had beenvisited but discounted: Beechwalk Park is not Council owned land but a Common Good property; RoomeBay was considered too exposed to the elements and the harbour too susceptible to high tides and storm

surges plus there was nowhere to place a required storage container. Denburn Woods would be an excellent area for the chil-dren to visit however, this would be difficult for parents dropping off their children.Due to the inability to identify a suitable site, the decision has been made that the provision of an outdoor nursery at Crail isnot viable. The provision of 1140 hours will therefore be delivered from the existing Nursery within Crail Primary School. Crail Community Council agreed to push forward with the issue if a demand for an outdoor nursery could be established.Harbour SandbarFollowing the bi-annual Fife Council meeting of Harbour Users at Glenrothes, it was established that an application to MarineScotland for a licence for removal had only recently been made. The Community Council had been advised that the applica-tion had been made sometime last year.Testing of the sand and silt will be required before a method of disposal is decided upon. It was stated that the increasing sizeof the sandbar and the shortening of daylight hours was reducing the amount of fishing time available for the boats.

We'll, you know I like achallenge so I decided totry my beak at seeing ifthere were any yummyscraps for me in one ofthese fancy new bins (theones on High Street delib-erately placed to foil anyattempts by me lookingfor food). Anyway, I don'tknow about you but I was-n't going anywhere nearthis one - could it be a dogpoo bag? Top marks if it was someone clearing up aftertheir pet but you'd have thought they'd have pushed itclear of the entrance. Of course, it could just be a cunningploy to keep me out. It worked!

I occasionally sit quietly and peep through folks' win-dows when their TVs are on. Now, I don't know aboutyou but it's only the 2nd December and I'm already sickand tired of Kevin the Carrot and that wee dragon.
