ROCKY MOUNTAIN SENIORS SKI CLUB DECEMBER 1, 2018 PAGE 1 President’s Notes Welcome to ski season! The skis are waxed, the clothes still fit, the tours are all in place and I’m just waiting for more snow!! Let’s hope for a stellar year for snow and temperatures. Be sure to get all your tour registrations in on time to participate in the tours still yet to come. Blaine Larsen, Ron Brown and Gaye Carter along with all the tour hosts work tirelessly to bring these tours to us. Their jobs are extensive, and we can’t thank them enough for all of their volunteer hours. We had a very successful membership registration day at Snow Valley and memberships keep coming in. A huge thank you to all our volunteers for their time and to Deanna Sharratt and John Zubrigg for organizing the day. The fall dinner at Woodvale Community Centre was very well attended. What a great meal! We want to express our gratitude to Bonnie Burn and Judy Mackay for their hard work in planning the event and making it happen so seamlessly. A special thanks to Sundance, Pacesetter, Snow Valley and Out of Bounds for their displays and door prizes. Progress has been made by the automation committee regarding researching the best fit for our club. James Donelon recently gave the Executive a demonstration of a software program that certainly looks promising. We welcome on board Byron Jonah as our historian. He replaces Art Robinson who truly represents the heart of our club. Our records are kept at the Provincial Archives. They do look for volunteers to assist in filing them if you have extra time on your hands during those short winter days. I end with a quote by Vista Kelly: “Snowflakes are one of nature's most fragile things, but just look what they can do when they stick together.” Think of what our club can be if we all work, volunteer and stick together! The executive will not meet again until after the New Year. I hope you will include some skiing or outdoor activity in the upcoming celebrations. How ever you celebrate the festive season, my wish is that you enjoy time with family and friends. Be kind to one other. JoAnn Grand President, RMSSC SKI TRACKS Silver Star #1 There’s still room! Welcome to Winter Tuesday December 4, 2018, another occasion to get together and welcome new members! It is also an opportunity for you to find and check your skis, bindings, and other equipment. Lifts open at 9:00am. Coffee, 10:30am, upstairs lodge. Ski Tours information, registration and find-a-roommate sign-up available in the morning only. Sign up for a complimentary, yes FREE, ski tip in the afternoon. After coffee, visit the Snow Rider Shop to have your bindings checked or leave your skis for tuning. More details are on the Club’s website under Current Events or click this link: https://seniorsski.files.wordpress.com/2018/11/nov-welcome-to-winter-2018-poster.pdf

December 11, 2018 - Demo Day with Sundance Ski Shop 9am - 1pm at Snow Valley An event many members look forward to is Demo Day at Snow Valley. Never skied on a pair of “FatBoys” or “Carvers” or “Racers” or “All Mountain” or “GS-ers” or “112 under foot”? Never “rode a board” before? This is the perfect opportunity to feel the difference in skis by actually skiing (or riding) on different equipment. Sundance Ski & Board Shop will have assorted equipment for you to try out. Great way to find your next new set!

Volunteer Opportunities The Canadian Adaptive SnowSports (CADS) Edmonton Zone offers programs in downhill skiing and snowboarding at Rabbit Hill. CADS Edmonton & CADS Alberta are seeking volunteers to help organize and enhance their programs throughout the 2018-19 season. Intermediate ski skill level required. Training provided.

Volunteers needed to help with the Silver Skate Festival (Feb 8-18, 2019) and the Canadian Birkebeiner Cross Country Ski Festival (Feb 8-10, 2019).

Fitness Classes will run again in January and February 2019 at Kinsmen. Watch your email for details.

Club On Hill programs update We did not post all the information on the website regarding the on-hill programs. Left out was the information regarding a “drop-in” option for instruction at $45.00 per lesson (lift ticket not included). Pardon the omission! The information on the website is now up to date. For those members who ski, would there be any interest in a ‘gear night’ (on a weekday evening) providing advice on all types of ski gear as well as maintenance tips? Gear night would be presented by experts from Sundance Ski and Snowboard Shop as well as from the Snow Valley Training Centre. There would be separate ‘stations’ dispensing advice on particular topics to help you figure out, for example, what skis would best serve you, what well-fitting boots should feel like, how to stay warm on windy days, and much more. If you are interested email Martha at [email protected]

Thanks! Tom Richards Special Activities Coordinator RMSSC

Club On Hill Programs at Snow Valley started November 26, 2018 Questions to: Martha [email protected] Register: * with Paul at Snow Valley [email protected] * in person December 4, 2018 morning ONLY, upstairs lodge at Snow Valley during our Welcome to Winter day for January - March 2019 sessions.
