WELCOME

Welcome to the fourth University of Buckingham Festival of Higher EducationWhat a year Higher Education has had! The rise in unconditional offers, concerns over student mental health and the role universities should take in shaping the lives of young people have all been in the news, before we even get to the A word.

We all know there is a lot to be done in the sector, from how students

transition from school, to the methods universities use to engage with their students and the way technology is used to achieve this; there has never been a more fascinating time to work in the sector.

The release of the Augar Review has resulted in many universities reviewing what they have to offer and how they offer their services to Generation Z. We expect that many of our debates during the festival’s programme will draw on the findings of this report.

Debates over the two-year degree came to a crescendo this year as the Government looked to legislate the two-year degree structure into mainstream university education. Yet many see little future for accelerated degrees.

Admissions figures at many HEIs have continued to rise but is it right some expand while others contract, especially in less affluent areas?

Established in 1748 and named after City of London politician and philanthropist Sir John Cass. The Foundation has a rich history of supporting pioneering initiatives to promote participation and achievement for the most disadvantaged young people in the capital. The Foundation has evolved over its more than 250-year history to become one of the leading independent education charities in the UK.

We proudly continue to support the work of our founder through offering funding to schools, organisations and individuals-in-need across inner London. Alongside our funding programmes we support seven name-bearing educational institutions from nursery up to tertiary level. The Foundation works hard to establish innovative partnerships with leading education bodies to improve attainment and access to opportunity.

The Foundation was delighted to have funded First Star UK to commission the Centre for Social Justice to write, what we hope, is a seminal report on care leavers in higher education. The report entitled “12by24”, was launched with cross-party support in the House of Commons on the 8 May 2019 and seeks to double the numbers of care leavers entering higher education by 2024.

We continue to be at the forefront of debate, stimulating meaningful discussion through our series of Annual Lectures and look forward to welcoming David Isaac CBE, Chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission at the Cass Business School on the evening of the 25 of September 2019.

Once again, the Foundation is delighted to be returning to the University of Buckingham in support of this inspirational and forward-thinking event.
