Head Coach Steve Roberts2007 ARKANAS STATE FOOTBALL SPRING PROSPECTUS

Just two years removed from leading Arkansas State to the 2005 Sun BeltConference championship and New Orleans Bowl, head coach SteveRoberts continues to make ASU a dominant force in the Sun Belt Conferenceand has ASU on track for continued success in the upcoming years.

When the 2005 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year took over the pro-gram in December 2001, he impressed everyone with his wide-eyed enthu-siasm and limitless energy. And, most of all, they believed that Roberts wouldbring success to the Indian football program. Roberts has been the drivingforce behind ASU’s recent success, leading the football program to its mostvictories over a five-year span since 1986-90.

Roberts came to Arkansas State University and brought with him a freshenthusiasm, energy, and an “I Will” philosophy that has been adopted byeveryone associated with the program.

“I Will” became the rallying cry as Roberts and his staff charged aheadthrough a grueling 13-game schedule in 13 weeks with no open date in hisinaugural season and came within 11 points of winning the Sun BeltConference championship and playing in the Sun Belt Conference prize—theNew Orleans Bowl.

ASU ended the season with a record of 6-7 and finished third in the leaguerankings. That tied the most wins since rejoining Division I-A in 1992. TheIndians finished in the top ten turnarounds by Division I-A football schools forimproving football records after finishing 2-9 in 2001. Also, attendanceincreased significantly in 2002.

The 2003 season saw a lot of success as well. Among ASU’s many achieve-ments was another increase in attendance, two defensive linemen ending upin the National Football League and the team winning the Sun BeltConference academic award.

Under Roberts’ direction, ASU continues to add to the achievements thatbegan upon his arrival. The 2006 ASU team backed up its 2005 Sun Beltchampionship with wins over teams such as Army, Memphis and NewOrleans Bowl champion Troy. The team posted six wins for the second con-secutive year, marking the first time since the 1986 and 1987 seasons thatthe Indians had recorded at least six victories in back-to-back seasons.

Roberts already holds the fifth most wins among ASU’s 26 all-time headcoaches and has led the Indians to a 17-6 record at Indian Stadium, whichincluded a 5-0 record in 2005.

During his tenure, ASU had upgraded its facilities with a new training room, weight room, locker room, recruiting room and state-of-the-art ProGreen turfon the field.

Roberts was named Arkansas State’s 26th head football coach on December21, 2001, to bring full circle his coaching odyssey from his home statethrough Louisiana and back. But, the trek has been a successful one, includ-ing an 8-4 record and national ranking in Division I-AA in 2000 atNorthwestern (La.) State.

Roberts spent two seasons at NSU, where he and his staffand team took on a tough schedule which included a 27-24overtime upset at TCU. While at NSU, Roberts was a final-ist for the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the YearAward. Prior to going to NSU, Roberts served as the headcoach and defensive coordinator at Southern ArkansasUniversity in Magnolia from 1994-99. While there, his 1997team won the Gulf South Championship, earning him GulfSouth Coach of the Year honors. The Muleriders finishedwith a cumulative record of 26-5 from 1997-99, including 9-1 in 1999, 8-2 in 1998 and 9-2 in 1997.

During that span, his teams enjoyed top conference rank-ings in scoring offense, scoring defense, total offense andtotal defense. At SAU, he also served as the defensive sec-ondary coach and recruiting coordinator from 1990-94before being named head coach. Academically, his programranked first in academic achievements in the Gulf SouthConference three seasons.

Roberts, an avid fisherman, graduated from Robinson HighSchool in Little Rock. A 1987 graduate of Ouachita BaptistUniversity, where he was an Academic All-American,Roberts received his masters from SAU in 1989. He and hiswife Sherri have one daughter – Abby (12).

ASU’s 2005 New Orleans Bowl appearance was the first for ASU since the 1970 Pecan Bowl.

Under Roberts the Indians have picked up 44 all-conference selections, including 10 each of the last two years to tieits most ever as a member of the SBC. ASU also placed 10 players on the list in 2002 and 2005. The Indians’ 10 all-

2007 Outlook2007 ARKANAS STATE FOOTBALL SPRING PROSPECTUS

After leading the Arkansas State football program to its best back-to-backseasons as Division I-A members in 2005 and 2006 and guiding theIndians to their most victories over a five-year span since 1986-90, headcoach Steve Roberts has clearly molded the Arkansas State football teaminto a consistent winner and a Sun Belt Conference contender on a year-to-year basis.

ASU won the 2005 Sun Belt Conference championship and representedthe league in the New Orleans Bowl before backing up its success with sixmore victories in 2006 to make them bowl eligible once again. The lasttwo seasons marked the first time since 1986 and 1987 that ASU won atleast six victories in two consecutive years. The Indians have posted a17-6 record at Indian Stadium for a .739 winning percentage underRoberts’, but the last two years have been even more impressive as ASUholds an 8-1 mark on its home turf over that span.

While the Indians finished tied for third in the eight-team Sun BeltConference race with a 4-3 league record in 2006, the Indians handedNew Orleans Bowl champion Troy their only conference loss of the year.ASU also defeated Army and Memphis, giving the Tribe two non-confer-ence Division I-A victories in the same season since returning to DivisionI-A in 1992. ASU finished the year with a 6-6 record and along the way,led the Sun Belt Conference in first downs, third-down conversions, timeof possession and allowed the fewest first downs. The Indians also boast-ed the league’s No. 2 defense and was the third least penalized team inthe conference.

Several young, but talented players emerged offensively for the Indianslast season. In fact, seven different freshmen or sophomores started atleast one game on offense in 2006, including Sun Belt ConferenceFreshman of the Year Reggie Arnold and Second Team All-Sun BeltConference selection Matt Mandich. A redshirt freshman last season,Corey Leonard also ended the season as the Indians regular starter atquarterback and true freshman Brandon Thompkins showed he has big-play potential as both a kick returner and wide receiver. Redshirt fresh-man Josh Arauco handled field goal duties all year long and earnedHonorable Mention All-America Honors at the end of the season.

While ASU returns the same number of starters on both offense anddefense (seven), the Indians had a more experienced group on defense.Out of the seven returning starters from last season, five are seniors thisyear. That experience was a big part of the reason the Indians’ defensenot only ranked second in the Sun Belt Conference in total defense, butalso 32nd in the nation. The Indians strength on defense appears to beits secondary, where it returns all four starters from last year’s team thatranked 12th nationally in pass defense and ninth in passes intercepted.

The defense returns the likes of All-Sun Belt Conference players TyrellJohnson (S), Khayyam Burns (S) and Koby McKinnon (LB). The defenseshould also get a boost from the return of defensive ends Brian Flagg andBrandon Rollins. Flagg was a regular starter in 2005, but missed all of lastseason due to an injury suffered in the 2005 regular-season finale, whileRollins started the first two games in 2006 before suffering a season-end-ing injury as well.

With the bulk of its major contributors returning from last year’s team andan incoming recruiting class rated as one of the top two in the Sun BeltConference by several highly respected recruiting services and analysts, the 2007 season could be even better for Roberts and the Indians.

QuarterbackThe Indians’ situation at quarter-back has changed drasticallysince the start of the 2006 sea-son. This time last year, theIndians didn’t know who theirstarting quarterback was andboth players competing for thejob had either very little or nogame experience at the colle-giate level. Travis Hewitt andCorey Leonard virtually splittime through the first five gameslast season and both were ableto get a lot of experience, butLeonard eventually won thestarting job and took most of thesnaps over the final sevengames of the year. Leonardemerged as a dual threat andafter finishing with a team-high1,321 passing yards and 331 rushing yards in 2006, is expected to enterthe season opener taking the snaps. Hewitt threw for 414 yards last sea-son and rushed for another 78 and three touchdowns. T.C. Jennings, aredshirt freshman, is expected to enter the season as ASU’s third quarter-back.

Running BackThe Indians’ offensive strengthentering 2007 appears to be itsgroup of young and talented run-ning backs. Sophomore’s ReggieArnold and Cedric Wilkerson car-ried the bulk of last years duties atrunning back and both excelled. Infact, Arnold rushed for 1,076 yardsand four touchdowns on his way tobeing named Sun Belt ConferenceFreshman of the Year, SecondTeam All-Sun Belt Conference,Freshman All-America by both theSporting News and FootballWriter’s Association of America andthe Little Rock Touchdown Club’sASU Player of the Year. Wilkersonwas the team’s second leadingrusher, posting 362 yards and two touchdowns on 86 attempts. Wilkersonreally showed what he was capable of during the Indian’s victory over

Memphis, rushing 23 times for 116 yards, both career highs. The ASUcoaching staff is also expecting big things from redshirt freshman PrestonBrown, who has looked good during spring practices and was a highlytouted recruit out of Smyrna, Tenn. The Indians will also have the serviceof senior Chris Easley, who rushed for 475 yards in 2005 before sufferinga season-ending injury in the Indians’ 2006 fall camp.

Tight EndThe Indians have two proventight ends in junior DavidJohnson and sophomore J.T.Jordan, both not only capableof blocking but also catchingthe football when called upon.Johnson started every gamelast year and led all tight endsin both receptions (13) andyards (200). The big tight endaveraged an impressive 15.4yards per reception, the high-est among all players with atleast 10 catches. J.T. Jordancaught just three passes lastseason, but gained some valu-able playing time and with departure of senior Brandon Henson, is expect-ed to play a larger role in the ASU offense in 2007. Sophomore TrevorGillott made the move from wide receiver to tight end this spring and haslimited experience, but could see some time at the position. Junior col-lege transfer Vernon Catlin, who may also play defensive end, could seetime at the position.

Offensive LineThe Indians return almost every starter at the skill positions, but while theyreturn all-conference standout Matt Mandich and regular-starter MattReibe along the offensive line from 2006 must still find three players tostep into starting roles and a number of capable back-ups to solidify theoffensive line. Mandich has received the most recognition up front, earn-ing All-Sun Belt Conference honors each of his first two seasons. Reibehas also been solid up front and is an all-conference candidate entering2007. Kyle Koets is a likely candidate to be back in a starting role in 2007after starting 11 games in 2005 and serving as a key reserve in 2006.Along with Mandich, Reibe and Koets, returning linemen ZachEichenberger, Heath Lockley and Vincent Thrower helped lead the way foran ASU running attack that ranked second in the Sun Belt Conference lastseason. At the conclusion of spring practices, the line was expected to beanchored by Mandich at left tackle, Reibe at left guard, Lockley at center,Koets at right guard and Thrower at right tackle. Lockley, who started onegame last season, will have to replace First Team All-Sun Belt Conferenceplayer Tanner Jenkins at center but performed well when on the field in2006 and in spring practices. A number of newcomers could also factorinto the mix on the offensive line, including junior college transfersBrandon Ciaramitaro and Mark Clemons as well as Rudy Harrell, whopracticed with the Indians during the spring. ASU also heavily recruitedseveral standout high school offensive lineman, signing five players along

the line. Head coach Steve Roberts likes to redshirt as many freshmen aspossible, but could use some of his high school recruits if needed.

Wide ReceiversThe Indians were hurt by injuries atthe wide receiver position in 2006,but return all of their players at thisposition and have a very talentedand deep group after severalyoung players emerged as play-makers last year. Junior KevinJones was ASU’s favorite targetlast year, finishing the year with 25receptions for 355 yards, bothteam highs. Despite missing twogames with an injury, senior LeviDejohnette finished second on theteam in both receptions (23) andyards (281). Dejohnette hasalready passed 1,000 yards receiv-ing for his career and needs justnine more catches to become thefourth player in school history topost 100 receptions in a career.Jones and Dejohnette are not the only threats ASU has out wide, howev-er, as five other returning receivers combined to catch 40 passes for 532yards and three touchdowns. Senior Patrick Higgins was the team’sbiggest deep threat, recording seven catches for 215 yards (30.7 yardsper reception) and three touchdowns despite missing the last three gameswith an injury. Chris Miller, Joe Smith, Jarriel Norman and BrandonThompkins will also see plenty of action. Miller caught 13 passes for 132yards, Smith nine for 73 yards, Thompkins eight for 89 yards and Normanthree for 23 yards. While Norman didn’t put up big numbers last year, he

had a great spring and was actually named the team’s Most ImprovedOffensive Player at the conclusion of spring drills.

Defensive Line (tackles)The Indians lost two interior defen-sive lineman off last year’s team inJamarrow James and JeremyWallace, but returns starter PrinceHickman and valuable reserve CurtisBonds. Hickman has the most expe-rience among the Indians’ defensivetackles, starting 21 career gamesand posting 40 tackles over the lastthree seasons. Bonds started onegame at defensive tackle in 2006,but came off the bench in the other11 outings to finish the year with 15tackles and two sacks. Bonds isexpected to start alongside Hickmanon the defensive line, but sophomoreKhari Mays and redshirt freshmanBryan Hall could challenge for play-ing time and help fill out the rotation.

Defensive EndThe Indians hope to start the 2007 season under completely different cir-cumstances than it ended the 2006 season at the defensive end position.Injuries almost completely decimated the ASU corp of defensive ends bythe finish of last season, losing Brandon Rollins and Alex Carrington dur-ing the course of the season for the entire year. The Indians also playedthe entire season without Brian Flagg, who was injured in the last game ofthe 2005 campaign. Jonathan Najm and Reggie Green, ASU’s two start-ing defensive ends in its 2006 finale, have departed but the Indians willbenefit from the return of Flagg, Rollins and Carrington. Flagg was a reg-ular starter during the Indians’ 2005 Sun Belt Conference championshipyear, while Carrington and Rollins were both starters in 2006 before sus-taining their injuries. With Carrington, Flagg and Rollins out for much oflast season, Rob Ramage saw much more playing time and will alsoreturn after posting eight tackles, including four for a loss, and two sacksas a junior last year. Stanley Wakwe and Levi Thompson could also fig-ure into the mix during the fall.

LinebackerASU lost two of its threestarting linebackers fromits 4-3 base defense fol-lowing the 2006 season, including All-Sun BeltConference selectionDevrett Wade, but willbenefit from the return ofanother All-Sun BeltConference selection insenior Koby McKinnon.McKinnon had the bestyear of his career in2006, recording 57 tack-les, a team-high 5.5tackles for loss, a team-high three sacks, twointerceptions, two passbreak-ups and oneforced fumble. Standout middle linebacker Josh Williams is gone, but BenOwens got a large amount of experience at the position last year and tal-lied 34 tackles, two sacks and an interception in a reserve role.Sophomore Matt Taylor and redshirt freshman Javon McKinnon got mostof the reps opposite Koby McKinnon during spring practice with the firstteam, but several players could handle starting duties to begin the season.Junior college transfers Vernon Catlin and Charlton Hankston will have anopportunity to make an immediate impact, while Roberts and his staffsigned five high school linebackers.

CornerbackAn experienced and talented group of cornerbacks return as part of anASU secondary that is the strength of the ASU defense. Senior’s MontisHarrison and Darren Toney as well as junior Dominique Williams all spenttime as a starter last year and combined to record seven interceptions ona team that was ranked ninth in the nation in the statistic. Harrison both had three interceptions, the second most on the squad. Thethree also combined for 14 pass break-ups and led by Toney’s 39 tackles, posted 82 tackles as a group. Making the position even stronger will bethe return of sophomore Daylan Walker, who also had one interceptionand one pass break-up in a reserve role last season.

SafetyThere might not be a better pair ofsafetys in the Sun Belt Conferencethan senior’s Tyrell Johnson andKhayyam Burns, both all-confer-ence selections that will be four-year starters for the Indians.Johnson is a three-time All-Sun BeltConference selection (first team2005 and 2006 and second team2004) and is among the top 10 play-ers in Sun Belt Conference historyin career tackles (269) and careerinterception return yards (7 inter-ceptions for 167 yards). Burns hasstarted all 35 games of his career atsafety and is a two-time All-Sun BeltConference selection. Last season,he led the team with four intercep-tions for 116 yards and was second on the team in tackles (60) behindonly Johnson (63). Burns also posted a team-high seven pass break-upsand recovered two fumbles as a junior.

Special TeamsWith the return of place kicker Josh Arauco and punter Brett Shrable, theASU kicking game should be solid again in 2007. Arauco busted onto the

scene last year as a redshirt freshman, ranking second in the Sun BeltConference in field goals made, third in field goal percentage, fourth inscoring (by kick) and sixth in scoring among all players. He ranked sec-ond in the nation in field goals made among all freshmen kickers to earnhim 2006 Sporting News Honorable Mention All-America honors. Araucoalso tied the ASU school record for consecutive field goals made with 10and finished the year hitting 12-of-16 attempts for a .750 percentage.Shrable took over punting duties for the Indians in 2006 and finished theyear ranked sixth in the Sun Belt Conference with 38.1 yard per punt. Heshowed what he was capable ofwhen he was named Sun BeltConference Special Teams Player ofthe Week after punting the footballfor a 42.2 average in a victory overTroy. Shrable had three kicks of 50yards or more in the game andpinned Troy inside its own 20-yardline three times. Wide receiverBrandon Thompkins headlinesASU’s returnmen after bursting ontothe scene as a true freshman lastyear. The playmaker returned 25kicks for 548 yards (21.9 averageper return) and had two gameswhere he posted at least 130 kick-return yards. Back to handle puntreturn duties will be Kevin Jones, who had a team-high 15 returns for63 yards in 2006.

The ScheduleThe 2007 schedule features several regional non-conference games high-lighted by back-to-back home contests against Memphis and SMU as wellas road outings at national powers Texas and Tennessee. The Indians willopen their 2007 campaign at Texas on Sept. 1, which will also be the firstever game between the Indians and Longhorns. ASU will continue its old-est rivalry the next weekend when it hosts Memphis and then facesConference USA member SMU at Indian Stadium, one of six home gameson the schedule. ASU will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to play Tennessee onSept. 22 in another first-ever meeting for the Indians. Following ASU’sopen date, the Indians will begin Sun Belt Conference play at Louisiana-Monroe on Oct. 6. Arkansas State will host Louisiana-Lafayette on home-coming weekend Oct. 13 in what will also be its first home SBC game.ASU will catch Sun Belt Conference co-champions Middle Tennessee andTroy in consecutive games on Oct. 20 and Oct. 27, respectively. ArkansasState will continue their Sun Belt Conference slate at Florida Atlantic onNov. 10 and then wrap up league competition at Indian Stadium with NorthTexas on Nov. 15. The Indians will close out their regular season Nov. 24with another regional game against Souther Mississippi, which ASU lastfaced in the 2005 New Orleans Bowl.
