Bob Spoo, the dean ofcoaches in the Ohio ValleyConferencereturnsforhis25thand final season on the Panthers sidelines looking to guide thePanthers to their 14th NCAAFCSplayoffappearance. Spoocurrentlyranksfourthamong Division I coacheswith the longest tenure at oneschooltrailingPennState’sJoePaterno, Albany’s Bob FordandVillanova’sAndyTalleyonthatlist.

SpooannouncedatapressconferenceinNovemberthatthe2011 season would be his final year at EIU. The 2011 season will markhis25thseasonatEIUandhis50thyearcoachingfootballatthehighschoolandcollegiatelevels. In2009EIUclimbedbacktothetopoftheOVCstandingsasthe Panthers capturing their fifth conference crown since 2001. Spoo was named the OVC Coach of the Year and one of five finalists for the Liberty Mutual National Coach of the Year as EIU finished the year at 8-4 overall. The Panthers advanced to the their seventh playoff appearance since 2000 ending the year ranked15thintheFCSCoachespoll. After missing the 2006 season for medical reasons, Spooreturnedtotheteaminafull-timecapacityfollowingthePanthers2006 first round playoff loss. In 2007 that recognized drive and “voice” returned in full force as Spoo guided EIU to its thirdstraightFCSplayoffappearanceand12thoverall. EIU would finish the 2007 season with an 8-4 record, 7-1 in the OVC. The Panthers were ranked No. 15 in the final FCS Coaches poll making their sixth playoff appearance in the lasteightseasons. ThewinningestcoachinEasternIllinoishistoryandtheactiveleaderinwinsamongOVCcoaches,Spoomaintainsacareermarkof140-113-1.HehasledthePanthersto11winningseasonsinthelast15years. Under his leadership the Panthers qualified for an unprecedented threestraighttripstotheNCAAI-AAplayoffsbetween2000-02and again from 2005-07. EIU has won (or shared) Ohio Valley Conference championship in five of the past ten seasons. In his 24 yearsatEIUthePanthershavemadetentripstotheNCAAplayoffswith 11 finishes in the Top 25 poll. EIU’s deepest run in the playoffs under Spoo came in 1989 when the Panthers knocked off Idaho in

the first round before losing the quarterfinals at Montana. DuringhistenureatEIU,thePanthershaveproducednumerousAll-ConferencepicksincludingsevenOffensiveorDefensiveOVCPlayersoftheYearsincethe2000season.EIUhasalsohadanumberof All-American players both on the field and in the classroom. Spooalsocoached2002WalterPaytonAwardwinnerTonyRomo,nowaProBowlquarterbackwiththeDallasCowboys. Overhis24yearsontheEIUsidelines,SpoohasbeennamedtheOVCCoachoftheYearthreetimes(2001,2005,2009),GatewayConferenceCoachoftheYearonce(1995)andtheRegionCoachoftheYeartwotimes(1995and2001).In2000hewastherunner-upfortheEddieRobinsonCoachoftheYearAward.In1995hewasnamedthe Football Gazette I-AACoachoftheYear. Demanding excellence on the field and in the classroom, Spoobelievesthatthefoundationforconstructingachampionshipprogram lies with a strong defense and sound kicking game,revolvingaroundaball-controlpassingattack. Spoo and his staff have been commended publicly by theFacultySenatefortheiremphasisonacademics.TheDaily Eastern News,thecampusdailynewspaper,namedSpooastheir“PersonoftheYear”inhissecondyearinCharleston. A threeyearPurdue letterman,SpooreplacedNFLHall-of-Famer Len Dawson as the starting quarterback in 1957 and guided theBoilermakerstoatwo-yearrecordof11-5.Heco-captainedthe1958 Blue team in the Blue-Gray All-Star game. Spoolaterreturnedtohisalmamatertocoachquarterbacksinthe 1980’s, building his resume by coaching such nationally known passersasMarkHermann,ScottCampbellandJimEverett.AllthreewouldgoontoplayintheNationalFootballLeague.Duringhistimeat Purdue (1978-1986) the team made four bowl appearances. Spoo also spent several years at Wisconsin (1973-77) as the quarterbacks coach. Priortobecomingamainstayinthecollegecoachingranks,SpoowasoneofthemostsuccessfulprepcoachesinIllinois.Hewas the head coach at Loyola Academy in Wilmette from 1967-72 directingtheschooltoa51-9-2recordandthe1969Chicagocitychampionship. He was the 1970 National High School Athletic CoachesAssociation“FootballCoachoftheYear”,1969IllinoisCoach of the Year and 1972 Chicago Coach of the Year. SpooandhiswifeSusanhaveonedaughterKate.

WinningtheturnoverbattleissomethingthatEasternIllinoisdefensivecoordinatorRocBellantonihaspreachedsincehejoinedthe Panthers staff. In 2006 that mantra was proven correct asthePanthersledthenationinturnoversgainedwith31.In2009EasternIllinoisforced26turnoverstorank19thinthenation. His2010defensewas ledbyseniorNickNastiwhoearnedfirst team All-OVC honors after leading the OVC in tackles and ranking20thnationally.EIUforced22turnoversasEIUhasrankedinthetop25nationallyinturnoversgainedinfourofBellantoni’snineseasonsasdefensivecoordinator. Bellantoni joined the Panthers defensive staff in 2001 andwas promoted to his current role of coordinator following the2002springpracticeseason. Inspringof2009hewaselevatedtoassociateheadcoachfordefenseaftertwoseasonsasassistantheadcoach. In his career he has coached three OhioValley ConferenceDefendersoftheYearinlcudingback-to-backwinnersClintSellersin 2005 and Donald Thomas in 2006. In 2007 Thomas finished as a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award handed out to the nation’s top FCS defensive player. Bellantoni also coached Nick Ricksto being named a two-time finalist for the Buchanan Award after winning OVC Defender of the Year honors in 2002. In 2008 he coached Pierre Walters who was a midseason BuchananAwardcandidatewho laterplayed in theTexasvs.TheNationAll-StargamebeforeearningarosterspotwiththeKansasCityChiefs. In 2005 Bellantoni’s defense ranked 19th in the country inscoringdefenseallowingjust19.2pointspergame.ThePanthersranked first in the OVC in rushing defense and second nationally inturnovermarginwith+1.5pergame.ThePanthersscoredanunprecedentedeightdefensivetouchdowns. PriortocomingtoEIU,BellantoniwasthedefensivecoordinatoratDrakeUniversitywhichsharedthePioneerLeaguetitlein2000with a 7-4 record. Drake’s defense forced 26 turnovers and had 36quarterbacksacksthatseason.Healsocoacheddefensivelineat Drake in 1998 and 1999 with the Bulldogs winning the 1998 conferencetitle. Bellantoni startedhiscoachingcareeratMamoroneckHighSchool High School in New York in 1993 and made his first collegiate coaching stop at Buena Vista University in Iowa in1995. A 1993 graduate of Iona College, Bellantoni earned threevarsitylettersplayingdefensetacklefortheGaels.Hestatedhisplaying career at Massachusetts as a member of the 1998 Yankee Conferencechampionshipteam. Bellantoni currently serves as the Panthers recruitingcontactforsouthFlorida.Healsoservesastheliaisonwithcampusfoodservicesandhousingandisthesummercampdirector. Bellantoni and his wife Jenny have four sons, Gino,MarcoandtwinsNicolasandRicky.

roY WIttKEAssociateHeadCoach-OffensiveCoordinatorQuarterbacksCoach(Wisconsin Eau-Claire, 1982) - 17th Season

Former Eastern Illinois offensive coordinator RoyWittkerejoined the Panthers football program on May 1, 2008 in a position hepreviouslyservedinfrom1990-2002.Wittkewaselevatedtohiscurrentpositionofassociateheadcoachforoffenseinthespringof2009. Followingthelossoftwoseniorquarterbacksfrom2009andthe lossof twosenior runningbacks toopen theseason,WittkehelpedcoachfreshmanquarterbackJimmyGaroppoloasheearnedAll-OVCNewcomerhonors.GaroppolowouldhaverankedthirdintheOVCinpassingyardsbutdidnotappearinenoughgames. EIU’s2009offensefeaturedamorebalancedoffensiveattackasquarterbackJakeChristensenandrunningbackMonWilliamswerebothsecondteamAll-OVCselections.ThePanthersscored19touchdownsthroughtheairandanother11ontheground. In 2008 the Panthers offense produced a 1,000 rusher for the fifth straight season as Travorus Bess climbed into the career Top 15onthePantherscharts. WittkecomesbacktoEIUfollowinghismostrecentstintatNorthern Illinois during the 2007 season where he served as the offensivecoordinatorandquarterbackscoach. Wittke is best known for helping to develop current DallasCowboys signal caller Tony Romo as the Panthers offensivecoordinatorfrom1990-2002.DuringthattimeframeEIUposted82 wins, made five FCS playoff appearances and was capped off byRomoearningthe2002WalterPaytonAward.HewasnamedtheAFCADivisionI-AAAssistantCoachoftheYearin2002asthePanthersoffensiveunitrankedfourthinthenationinscoring(35.3 ppg) and fifth in total offense (452.6 yards/game). During his first stop at EIU, Wittke coached 14 players who earned offensive All-American honors and numerous All-Conference selections in both the Ohio Valley Conference andGateway Football Conference. Three of his offensive unitsrank among the top five at EIU for total offense and scoring in a season. Following the2002 season,Wittkeworkedas theoffensivecoordinatorattheUniversityofArkansasfrom2003-05andoneseason at both Arizona State University (2006) and Northern Illinois University (2007). Wittke coached in both the 2003 Independence Bowl withArkansas and the 2006 Hawai’i Bowlwith Arizona State. He has also had stints at his alma mater Wisconsin Eau-Claire (1979-81), Montana State University (1982-84) and Central Missouri State (1985-89). Wittke is a native of Racine, Wis., and a 1982 graduate of WisconsinEau-Claire.HeandhiswifePattyhavethreechildren:sonsBradandJeffanddaughterBekah.

MatthewSmileyentershisthirdseasonasthePanthersspecialteamscoordinatorhavingcoachedtwooftheOVC’sbestspecialteamsplayersin2009. In2009SmileycoachedpunterKevinCookandkickerAustinSignor as Signor earned first team All-OVC honors after leading the nation in kick offs for touchback. Signor also ranked 30thnationally in field goals. Cook finished the season ranked 9th in thenation inpunting. Special teamsplayerLorenceRicksalsoearnedNationalSpecialTeamsPlayeroftheWeekdistinctionin2009duringthePantherswinoverJacksonvilleState. In2010SmileyagaincoachedaspecialteamsunitthatledtheOVC in fewest kick return yards allowed. Cook would finish his EIUcareerasthePantherscareerleaderinpuntingaverageasheearned first team All-OVC honors. Cook ended the season ranked 8th in the nation in punting average. Smiley came to Eastern Illinois following two seasons atEureka College where he served one season as the offensivecoordinatorandoneseasonasthedefensivecoordinator.InOctoberof 2008 he was named interim head coach and preceded to win his first contest with a 47-19 win over Principia College. AtEureka,SmileyalsooversawthedevelopmentoftheRedDevilsspecialteamswiththekickoffcoverageteamrankingNo.2 in NCAA Division III for least return yards allowed in 2007. Duringatwo-yearstinthecoachedeightAll-SLIACperformers. PriortocoachingatEureka,SmileyworkedfortwoseasonsasaspecialteamscoachatDartmouthCollegeservingasthespecialteams coordinator in 2006. In 2007 the Big Green special teams blocked five kicks while improving in both kickoff and punt return yardageallowed. Smiley entered the coaching ranks as an undergraduate atIllinoisservingasastudent-assistantcoachafterbeingawalk-onwidereceiverwiththeFightingIllini.HegraduatedfromIllinoisin May 2001 and served in the United States Air Force as a first lieutenant in Grand Forks, North Dakota. While on active dutySmileywasdeployedfourtimesinsupportofOperationEnduringFreedom and received the USAF Commendation Medal for hisefforts. While stationed in Grand Forks he also worked with thespecialists at the University of North Dakota where he coachedtwoAll-Americankickersin2001and2003. oFFEnsE outlooK QuarterbackJimmyGaroppolotookhislumpsasafreshmanstarter last season before starting to click in the final four games of theyear.InthosefourcontestsGaroppolopassedfor1,052yardsand14touchdownswithonlythree interceptions. EIUposteda2-2 record in those games as a young offensive line seemed tomatureastheseasonprogressed. ThisseasonasasophomoreGaroppolowillbesurroundedbythesameoffensivetargetsthathelpedhimbesuccessfulattheend of 2010. The Panthers return their top four pass receiversin Erik Lora (50 rec./478 yards), Kenny Whittaker (42 rec./382 yards), Chris Wright (21 rec./557 yards) and Lorence Ricks (20 rec./285 yards).
