Our Desert Mashie Tournament Director, Pam Hill, has been working hard to ensure

that we are playing nice tracks, in addition to keeping the price within our affordable range, so I ask that we all keep in mind that Pam is only as good as the members

who come out and support her. Therefore, I ask that we all go to

www.desertmashie.org and review our remaining tournament scheduled for this year,

and sign up on line. Remember, great participation is necessary to enable Pam to

negotiate great rates.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for our Desert Mashie Annual next year which will

be held on Friday, April 5, and Saturday, April 6, 2013, at the Legacy Golf Resort, and

the Raven Golf Club. Both of these venues are located in Phoenix, and are within

close proximity to the following: Phoenix Airport -- 6.4 miles; Arizona Mills shopping

outlet & theater -- 3.5 miles; and Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino -- 10 miles. For

your planning purposes, more information is available on the Desert Mashie website

As indicated in the New Year’s Dinner/Dance flyer above, the cost is $50.00 for

Guests. Now, let’s think about that …. For $5.00 more ($55.00) total payment by

December 1, the guest could become a non-golfer Desert Mashie member for the

remainder of 2012 and full year 2013, and have free entry into the Dinner/Dance.

Our condolences and prayers go out to the Malcolm Boone family. Malcolm’s home-

going service was held on Wednesday, Oct. 3.

I am looking forward to you joining my wife and me at the New Year’s Eve

Dinner/Dance!

Last but certainly not least, DON’T FORGET TO VOTE!

On September 7, approximately 20 Desert Mashie members, family

and friends traveled to Tucson to participate in Desert Trails Golf Club’s Annual Tournament. The tournament was held at the OMNI Resort. The accommodations were outstanding, and the golf course

was in great shape. Of course, it was the middle of Monsoon season, so a severe thunderstorm rolled in Sunday morning, bringing with it lightning and some rain, but we were able to get around the course in good time. Below is a list of the winners in their respective category.

I am happy to announce that Naomi Bryson, our Desert Mashie WIG member, has

written a book entitled "My Seven Sisters From Other Mothers". I have finished

reading this book and highly recommend it. There are tips, strategies for personal growth as well as techniques for coping and interacting in fun activities. There are

some surprising elements in the book too.

o The book can be purchased from Amazon.com or downloaded to your e-

reader.

o It will make a great gift especially at Christmas. o It is always great to support our member's creativity and endeavors.

Golf Clinic: The golf clinic dates for the fall session are Saturday, October 20, 27,

November 3, and 10 with play of 9 holes of golf.

Personal Medical Record for Golf Bag: I discussed the need to be able to provide

medical information if you become ill on the golf course. I distributed a Medical card that can be filled out to be placed in the golf bag that contain information

about medications taken, allergies, emergency contact number and doctor's name.

This is information we may not know personally about each other. JoJo stated she

has placed her I.C.E. (in case of emergency) information in a luggage bag tag

placed on her golf bag.

Renee Powell, LPGA, Owner of Clearview Golf Club: I shared an email invitation

received from Ms. Powell to bring a golf group to Clearview GC in Canton, Ohio.

After much discussion, it was decided to research the feasibility of a group visiting

Clearview in August 2013.

The Rally for the Cure Tournament was a successful tournament again this year. A

Thank You Letter and Certificate of Appreciation was received from Rally for the Cure.

Mark your calendars for the 2013 North South Shootout which will be held in

Northern California October 6 -7, 2013.

ANDREW PROCTOR was the winner in the COLORADO JUNIOR OPEN -- July 7 & 8,

2012, for his age category. The weather presented many challenges for the golfers, but on the 1st day Andrew shot 76; and that was with the players being called off the course for about 1 hour 15 minutes due to thunder, lightning and rain. Andrew finished the 1st round with a 4-stroke lead. The second day was much better weather to play in, and he shot a 73. So he took first place for his group with a 10-stroke lead. Below are the top 4 for Andrew's group for both days.

Junior Golf

“The Western States Golf Association’s Junior Golf Championships were held here

in the Phoenix, Arizona area July 31 – August 3, 2012. The event was a

resounding success! Junior golfers from clubs that represented Mile High, Los

Angeles, Valley View, Leisure Hour, The Honors, Inland Empire, and Desert

Mashie made up the field. 113 junior golfers competed in 6 age divisions each for the boys and girls. There were 34 girls and 79 boys.

The success of the tournament was due in part to the outstanding support that

was provided by the volunteer’s. Your support was the main cog in the wheel that

resulted in the success that was realized. You all worked tirelessly and

cooperatively together. The teamwork displayed was the type of effort that the

Mashie’s and their supporters routinely give to ensure the success of any endeavor

undertaken. You handled each bump in the road with calm and determination and

smoothed out each one that was encountered. I cannot begin to express my pride

and gratitude for you outstanding support to this project. We are truly blessed as

an organization to have members with the drive and character to do things the

right way. Thank you ALL from the bottom of my heart for your help in making

the tournament a success.

Thanks are also appropriate to the juniors and chaperons for their outstanding

behavior during the event. There were no incidents of misbehavior. The hotel

routinely hosts youth events from many different sports. They praised the group

as the “best display of behavior” they have ever experienced.

Sincerely,

Harold Fields”

I volunteered at this event, and I can attest to the outstanding behavior that Harold mentioned above. Also, I heard the hotel coordinator for this event commenting to another

hotel employee that our group displayed the best behavior of any group they had ever hosted. What a wonderful experience and a beautiful sight to see over 100 youth, enjoying themselves, and there were no loud outbursts, no running, screaming, auguing, etc. What a

lesson these young people are learning while being taught, practicing, playing and enjoying the game of golf! I can say with all honesty this was one of the most rewarding experiences

that I have had this year.

The Western State Golf Association (WSGA) Alan Bennett Junior Golf

Championship was held in Phoenix July 31 – August : Below is note

from Harold Fields, Desert Mashie’s Director of Junior Golf, regarding

the tournament.

The following was received from the Reggie Browning Family:

“On behalf of Victoria and the entire Browning Family, THANK YOU for the support in

enabling her to play in the WSGA Junior Golf Championship! Victoria had a fantastic time

and she believes she made some life long friends along the way. She wishes she could

have played better, but this week was a key motivator in her golf life. We look forward to

below.

New book offers help for women with issues and help

for others who care about them:

MY SEVEN SISTERS FROM OTHER MOTHERS

By

Dr. Naomi Bryson

Most sane people are challenged when dealing with

women who have seemingly insurmountable problems and

issues. These women are known as hoarders, whiners,

backstabbers, liars, and emotionally needy.

Naomi describes them as sisters of the heart. She shares

useful recommendations, tips, and strategies for personal growth

as well as techniques for coping and interacting with these sisters

on a daily basis. Sisters of the heart do not need words to

communicate with each other because they have been bonded

together by codes of their hearts. This book promises to help

women to cope with their issues before they destroy themselves

and others around them.

Naomi is the developer of several curricula and is a noted

designer of educational programs; she is a respected speaker,

and workshop presenter. She received commendations for her

published book, The Day Snow Turned Black, which is a

documentary. She became a certified dietitian by the American

Dietetics Association and studied nutrition as an undergraduate at

Atlanta’s Clark College. She has completed advanced studies in

behavioral psychology earned a doctorate degree in educational

administration from Wayne State University.

Golf definition

the month

“SHAMBLE” A shamble is a type of golf

tournament that combines elements of

a scramble with elements of regular

stroke play.

Like in a scramble, all members of a

team (usually four) tee off and the

best ball of the four tee shots is

selected. All players move their balls

to the spot of the best ball. From this

point, the hole is played out at stroke

play, with all members of the team

playing their own ball into the hole.

So: select the best shot off the tee,

move all balls to that spot, then play

individual stroke play until each

member of the group has holed out.

Hole—In—One POT

The club has initiated a

$500

Hole-in-One Pot.

Any paid member who gets a hole-in-one during

a Desert Mashie sponsored event will receive the

$500. If there is more than one hole-in-one during

the same event, the prize fund will be divided.

Things - How about all that golf equipment

you keep buying to improve your game, but alas, you realize it’s really operator error so you now want to unload it?

Well, drop us a note with the details ([email protected]) , and we’ll put it in the monthly newsletter. Just get me your information at least 7 days prior to the first of each month and we’ll publish it in the next newsletter!

Did you know that…

Trying too many things at once can be more confusing than helpful.

Work at your golf game, but don't try to fix everything at once.

Work at one specific thing until you can see significant improvement.

That way if you struggle at one part of your game, you will have built

up enough confidence with the improved part of your game to be

encouraged and keep playing.

In 2012, December has 5 Fridays, 5

Saturdays, and 5 Sundays. This

apparently happens once every 823

years!

It’s not too early to start planning to renew your membership or recruit a new member for the Desert Mashie Golf Club. You can renew your membership or sign up as a new member by going into the website (www.desertmashie.org), or by filling out the membership application below.

Remember, “we are family”, so if you have some family members who are golfers, or non-golfers, bring them along, too. The more the

merrier. And, while you are at it, don’t forget about getting your

young grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, or friends

involved in our Junior Golf Program. This is an excellent program for our youth to be able to explore their talents, meet other youth throughout the United States, as well as learn some valuable life skills, and have fun.

HEARD A GOOD ONE…. The duffer muffed his tee shot into the woods, then hit into few trees, then proceeded to hit across the fairway into some other woods. Finally, after banging away several more times, he proceeded to hit into a sand trap. All the while, he’d noticed that the club pro had been watching. “What club should I use now?” he asked the pro. “I don’t know,” the pro replied. “What game are you playing?”

We are out of the hot summer months, but it is still important to stay hydrated.

Hydration on the Course

“Stay hydrated” is a common phrase you often hear from playing sports

and on the golf course. Optimal hydration can improve your golf game mentally and physically. Since the brain is made up of 85% of water and is water

inefficient, it has top priority in regards to blood circulation. Drinking the correct

amount of water will ensure optimal blood flow to the brain which will enable you

to focus on the golf course.

The human body is composed of 25% solid matter (solute) and 75% water

(solvent). For instance, the nucleus pulposus of an intervertebral disc is composed

mostly of water. The majority of the weight of the upper body is supported by this

water volume in the disc; therefore proper hydration can be a preventative

measure against low back pain. Water also acts as a lubricating agent for joints

which can relieve pain from chronic joint pathologies.

Now that you know the importance of proper hydration, the amount of

water consumed per day is critical to reach this goal. Some people say “drink lots of water”. But what is a lot of water? Other say “drink 8 glasses of water per

day.” This is not an accurate way to determine the amount of water to drink each

day. For example if a female golfer weighs 100 pounds. 8 glasses of water may

cause over hydration. On the other hand if a male golfer weighs 200 pounds, 8

glasses of water falls far below the correct amount of water.

The optimal amount of water to drink is ½ your body weight (pounds) in

ounces per day. For example, a 200 lb. person will need to drink 100 ounces of

water per day. A key point to remember is that other fluids do not count toward

your goal of ½ your bodyweight in ounces. Those fluids include: coffee, tea, juices,

soda, milk, sports drinks, and flavored water. In fact, other fluids like sports drinks

and juices can actually dehydrate the body because it takes water to actually dilute these high sugar drinks before it is assimilated in the body.

Timing of water consumption is important to optimal hydration. Drinking

water first thing in the morning is critical because during sleep the body becomes

dehydrated. Therefore drinking water first thing in the morning is the first step to

optimal hydration. Start with 25% of your total water intake in the

morning. If your water intake for the day is 100 ounces, you would consume 25

ounces in the morning. During a golf round you should consume 40% -

50% of your total daily intake of water. If your water intake for the day is

Page 26: 2 0 1 DESERT MASHIE NEWS 2 “5 Iron” 2 … · 2 DESERT MASHIE NEWS “5 Iron” Hello Desert Mashie Family, Well, August and September have come and gone, Summer has come and gone,

100 ounces, you would consume 40-50 ounces of water on the golf course. The

remaining water should be consumed throughout the day.

The type of water you drink is important to achieving optimal hydration. 80% of

bottled waters are filtered tap waters. Choose a bottled water that has

approximately 200-300 parts per million (mg/L) of dissolved solids. This ensures

a proper amount of dissolved solids in the water to maintain proper hydration. High quality water sources include Evian, Fiji, and Trinity. Water from Reverse

Osmosis units can be used but the dissolved solids can be quite low. A great way

to remedy this situation is to add a small pinch of Celtic Sea Salt to every liter of

water.

Celtic Sea Salt is an organic, unrefined sea salt that has over 80 trace minerals

that will help replenish the body with electrolytes. Not only does it replenish the

electrolytes in the body, it is a great way to prevent muscle cramps. Another great

benefit of using Celtic Sea Salt is the reduction of allergic tendencies. I have had

great results with golfers that have allergic symptoms due to pollen and

grass. Many have reported reduced symptoms of allergic reactions with the

proper amount of water and the addition of Celtic Sea Salt. Please do not consume regular salt in the place of Celtic Sea Salt. Regular salt is just sodium

chloride which can be quite toxic when consumed on its own without the other

trace minerals.

Drinking the proper amount and correct type of water may be the missing link to

improving your golf game mentally and physically. So, here’s drinking to your golf

game and health.
