    Indentured servitude/

    Headright system

    -chief source of agricultural labor(tobacco) in Virginia & Maryland

    -headright system encouraged the importation of indentured servants (paid

    the passage of laborer receiving the right to acquire 50 acres of land

    -# of slaves increased dramatically

    Mayflower Compact -1st American Constitution

    -Pilgrims (led by William Bradford) settle in Plymouth Massachusetts,

    -an agreement to submit to majority rule

    Halfway Covenant -As time passed, Puritans religious zeal began to diminish

    -eased the requirements for church membership by allowing the baptism of

    the children of baptized but unconverted Puritans

    Albany Congress -developed by Benjamin Franklin

    -Iroquois Confederacy sought alliance

    -failed, but set precedent for future congress(Continental Congress)

    city upon a hill -John Winthrop call on Puritans to build a model Christian society with a strict

    code of moral conduct

    1st Great Awakening -took the form of wave of religious revivals that began in New England-New Light ministers advocated emotional approach to religious practices;

    weakening the authority of traditional old light ministers

    -New Light ministers: promoted growth of New Light institutions of higher

    learning (Princeton);sparked a renewed missionary spirit that led to the

    conversion of many African slaves; Presbyterian v. Congregational; increase in

    women in church congregations

    Colonists and Native

    American conflicts

    -Indians no longer viewed English as trading allies but as invaders

    -Powhatan massacre 347 settlers leading to war btw. Settlers and Indians

    French & Indian War -France relinquished its N. American empire; England dominated lands east of

    Mississippi, as well as parts of Canada; pivotal point in US relationship w/

    Great Britain; began to impose revenue taxes on the colonies due to itsenlarged debt

    Dominion of New England -James II(absolutism) sought to extend royal control over the colonies by

    combining them into larger administrative units; asserted control over NE,

    levied taxes, revoked town halls

    -abolished representative assembly-> Glorious Revolution; dominion end

    Yeoman Society -rejected feudal practices

    -town land was given to group of proprietors to distribute to all families

    -most adult men had vote in town meetings-> allowed avg. male much more

    political power

    Bacons Rebellion Nathaniel Bacon led 1000 Virginians in rebellion against Governor Berkeley;

    servants wanted Natives out of VA but Berkeley had close tie w/ Natives; ledto land dispute: settlers wanted land that Natives have guaranteed to

    Natives, Berkeley refused; Bacon kill native groups and burned the capital and

    plundered the rich; *** significantly increased the number of African Africans

    as a source of cheap labor
