Hanamatsuri Flowers NeededIf you have wisteria in bloom, we can use those on the hanamido. Donations of flowers or cash donations are welcome. We always have a beautiful hanamido on display thanks to everyone’s generosity. Please let Lynne Masumoto or Kyoko Gibbs know about your flowers. They will let you know when to bring them.

Buddha Day(Hanamatsuri)

April 12thThis service is held to com-

memorate the birth of Gautama in Lumbini Garden. During the service, a flower shrine known as a

Hanamido is set up in front of the main shrine as a symbol of Lum-bini Garden. This hanamido is decorated by the youth groups at our temple. The white elephant has been restored by the Dharma School children and parents.

A statuette of the infant Buddha is placed in this shrine and the Sangha (congregation) offer flowers and pour sweet tea over the image. According to the ancient legend, the universe was filled with joyful music, flowers bloomed in full glory and sweet rain fell from the heavens to make this a joyful event.

Otoki will be served by the BWA. This is a wonderful service to bring the entire family.

Forms of MeditationRev. Chickens Have Two LegsThe 18th century poet Onitsura once wrote the following

haiku:Ah, cherry blossomsChickens have two legs(While) horses have four

Here, Onitsura is saying “Isn’t it great ‘chickens have two legs; while horses have four”? Or that it’s great isn’t it that; cats meow, while dogs bark?, or that some trees are straight, while others are crooked?, or that some days it rains, while on other days it’s cloudy?

In short, if one leaves one’s judgmental mind to the side, even for a moment, all things appear in their pristine and natural state. That is, things are fundamentally neither good nor bad or even neutral. They are simply Being themselves.

Now if this profound and simple truth is applied to oneself, one then approaches the world of enlightenment and salvation. For example, with regard to oneself, when you’re your “young self”, you’re simply being your “young self” is better than your “childhood self.” And when you’re your “aged self,” that doesn’t mean that your “aged self” is worse off than your “young self” and so on. It just means that you are now being your “aged self.”

The deepest source that allows us to accept the Beingness of “things-as-they-are” is found in Shin Buddhism. We might touch upon that at another time.

Gassho, Reverend Tetsuo Unno

Donate Your CarEd Kawamoto, Art & Terry Musashi are the latest contributors to

our Cars for the Cause program. They recently donated their unused cars which yielded over $5,000 for the Temple. Thank you, Ed, Art & Terry!

It’s time you got rid of that old car in your driveway, too! You’ll get the tax write-off, feel great about donating, and make room for something new!

Scott does the work for you so it couldn’t get any easier. Call or email him when you’re ready or if you have any questions. [email protected] or 310-991-0585.

January and February were busy months for our BWA. For Hoonko, the BWA prepared miso soup to accompany obento lunches, purchased from a commercial source, the an-nual membership meeting was held during this lunch. Thank you to Mrs Carol Oyama and Mrs. Kyoko Gibbs for seasoning the soup – delicious!!

Thank you to all who were able to help with the SuperBowl Chi-rashi Gohan sale, whether selling, buying, food preparation and cooking or assembly of the beautiful boxes of Chirashi! We needed everyone’s help and appreciate your participation.Following Valentine’s day, the BWA held it’s annual luncheon at Fleming’s Steakhouse in Pasadena. Honorees at the luncheon included: our members who are 79+ years of age; the famous Sons of Gardeners (SOGs), Rev. and Mrs. Gibbs, incoming cabinet and outgoing cabinet and all of our hard-working members. Special thanks to JoAnn Asao for the lovely Valentine’s themed table fa-vors! We all had a lovely time socializing and not working!!We are gearing up for Obon. Monthly Opportunity Raffle Winners

January 2020 - Roy SugitaFebruary 2020 - Michiko Oba

The Board will continue to bring up ideas and projects to keep our Temple safe and financially stable. We have a slowly dwindling membership and we hope that we can reach out to all the Temple members who have been active for so many years to help us bring back your children and grandchildren to your Temple. It can be as easy as inviting them to a special service like Hanamatsuri or it can be a monthly memorial service (shotsuki) where you are honoring your own family. It can be inviting them to a fundraiser to eat or to help out. We are hoping that you will go outside your own comfort zone and reach out to your own children and grandshildren in 2020.

Recently Reverend Gibbs, Kathy Kumagai and Jeannie Toshima attended the National Council Meeting in Renton, Washington representing our Temple. The theme was “Dana for World Peace” and we were able to hear many dharma messages from a variety of BCA ministers. It was announced that Reverend Marvin Harada of OCBC will be the new Bishop of BCA as of April.

A mandatory meeting for all representatives was held concern-ing security of our Temples against possible violence and natural disasters. It was a very eye-opening session. Our Temple has met with the Pasadena Police and has sent the police a diagram of our grounds for their files. Thanks to Alan Goto and the SOGs, surveil-lance cameras have been installed outside the buildings and inside Sakai Hall. But we found out that there are many other steps that still need to be addressed: like keys to the buildings, keeping doors closed and locked, checking the perimeter walls for possible entry-ways, outside lighting in the evenings, and security cameras for the entryway of our hondo.

Some of the suggestions for Pasadena that are easy to implement would be to have our greeter stand outside the hondo doors and to stay outside until after the service starts, be strategic on which doors remain open during service or special events, install a camera to see who is outside the door of the hondo (as we do not have a window), and to make sure we designate sangha members to be part of a security committee to make plans and to put these plans in place. If you would like to be part of this committe, please contact any board member.

The board is looking into installing a Nokotsudo (cremains stor-age) inside our hondo. And we will be looking for more funding to keep our Invisible Teahouse project, which includes digitizing the Temple history.

We will be looking at different fundraising opportunities to help fund improving the security of our Temple, along with other main-tenance issues we know will be arising in the months to come.

Compared to many other Temples in the BCA, Pasadena is in good shape! We have Rev Gibbs and his family, the SOGs, the Tuesday Sewing group and many other new friends to be grateful for.

Please come help at our dinner! Don’t wait to be asked!

Legacy Giving TreeWe ask that you consider joining many other thoughtful and gen-

erous members by making a gift to the Pasadena Buddhist Temple Legacy Fund. Contact Gerry Ito or Shelley Shinmoto for more information.
