Transcript of 1970s: Decade of Development @doniw

The 1970s was a impressive decade; many memorable events took place that were linked to social and cultural aspects of Australia. Due to the Western influence, our culture became more entertaining and prominent to our lives in the 1970s.

Fashion was a immediate trend in the 1970s. From the Hippie Movement to the Disco Fashion; styles of clothing became a major attraction to both genders.

Women flouted their freedom by wearing traditional male clothing such as trousers, jackets, vests and ties. On the other hand, men began to wear colourful ties and fitted shirts with massive collars. Many fashionable items were influenced by popular culture.

The American 'disco' craze filtered through to Australia in the mid 1970s. Many disco fans wearing shiny and fitted outfits jammed to nightclubs to dance to upbeat disco music. Popular American disco artists including The Jackson 5 and Donna Summer became everyones favourite at the time.

Go-karts, BMX bikes and skateboards were very popular within and out of the decade; entertaining all Australian age groups. Ten-pin bowling centres and roller skating rinks were first introduced to Australia. These entertaining items allowed release from stress due to days of heavy work.

Australia achieved a great amount of results in sport throughout the decade. Achievements as it follows:

Australias netball team won the World Championships three times. The Australian swimming team earned eight gold medals from the 1972 Munich Olympics. In 1974, Australia was qualified for the World Cup finals in West Germany. Australian tennis players dominated Wimbledon early in the decade.

World Series Cricket was a professional cricket competition held between 1977 and 1979; organised by Kerry Packer. The matches ran in opposition to established international cricket. The World Series drastically changed the nature of cricket, and its influence continues to be felt today.

Gough Whitlam will always be a memorable political figure in the 1970s and now. In the year 1972, he introduced many new reforms and policies that changed the face of Australia. Such include abolition of conscription and introduction of multiculturalism.

Richard Nixon was the 37th President of the United States, serving from 1969 to 1974. Nixon is famous for becoming the first president ever to quit the United States office. He resigned after five years in office when his administration was consumed by the developing Watergate scandal, where burglars hired by Nixon's re-election campaign were caught in a sloppy attempt to bug the offices of the Democratic National Committee.
