BRIGHTON SPEED TRIALS

FIRST EVENT. The first Speed Trials werehe1d in JULY,1905, on Madeira Road. They occupied 3 days and celebratedthe opening of the road after re-surfacing with tar-macadam.This was one of the first roads so treated, if not the first, in thiscountry.

Motoring celebrities of the day were present; The Hon.C. S. Rolls driving a 150h.p. DEFAUX,built in Holland and saidto have been completed on the boat coming over. Sir AlgernonGuinness driving a 200 h.p. DARRACQ(our B. & H. M. C. Vice-President and Steward of to-day's meeting). The races startedfrom Black Rock and finished at the Aquarium in those days.Clifford Earp (90 h.p. NAPIER)made fastest time of the day' afterreplacing his wire wheels with artillery wheels of a smallerdiameter. The ladies were represented by Miss Dorothy Levett,whose hair was covered by the then fashionable motor veil anddriving an 80 h.p. NAPIER,which had a cranking lever about 3feet long instead of the usual starting handle.

There were Continental Entries, one of whom had a longblack beard. Henry Cissac riding a 12 h.p PEUGEOTmade fastesttime for motorcycles.

We are grateful to one of of our most enthusiastic Com-mittee Members for this information and he actually was apassenger in a competing 15 h.p. WHITESTEAMCAR.

The Brighton & Hove Motor Club restarted the races in1932 and they were continued annually until September 3rd,1939,when the Committee Meeting held to cancel the event wasrudely interrupted by the first Air-raid syren of the war. 1946is the first meeting to be International and run over the standingkilometre; formerly the distance was half-mile. Brighton SpeedTrials have attracted the largest entry of any car race meetingheld in the British Isles.

HALF-MILE COURSE RECORDS. Car Record is heldby G. Taylor, Alta supercharged, 1960c.c. 80.18 m.p.h. (1938).Solo Motor Cycle Record is held by the late Eric Femihough,Brough Superior J.A.P. supercharged. 89.86 m.p.h. (1936). Healso holds the Motorcycle with Sidecar Record with a BroughSuperior ].A.P. 75 m.p.h. (1935).

Eric Femihough unfortunately lost his life whenattempting to regain the World's Motorcycle Speed Recordfor Great Britain.

MOTOR RACING AT 15 MILES AN HOUR!

There is something distinctly exhilarating about any form of racing,which spreads from the participants to spectators almost magically.Looking back it seems difficult to imagine how the early Motor

Racing can have been so very exciting, but after all these things arecomparative and our reactions to events change.

It would not be very thrilling for us to be transported back in time,to see again the first :\1:otor Races ever organised These were fromParis to Rouen, in 1894. Speeds seem almost like walking pace, incomparison with our ordinary road speeds no.,...

Fifteen miles an hour was the average speed in Motor Racing in1895in France and records were broken there in 1896 when the first andprobably the last race ever was won by a Steam Carriage at the fabulousspeed average of 18m.p.h.

In 1899a Motorist in London was fined for driving in the streets at10miles an hour and even just before the outbreak of war in 1914 one canremember the famous measured mile along" The Dicker" in East Sussex.At changing spots on that long stretch of straight road of those daysthe Pollee were in the habit of setting traps for the unwary and many werethe prosecutions for exceeding the statutory 20 miles per hour.

It has taken 50 years to arrive at a condition of affairs in which nowalmost every Police Officer is himself a Motorist and unless oue reallywishes for trouble he will find the Force as helpful to him as Motoristsare to each other

Looking back over these years many names connected with Motoringas a sport stand out in memory. They need not be enumerated here-mostreaders know them well.

In addition there will come to mind the memories of those firms inthe Molor Trade whose Garages I1Bvelooked after Cars during these long-years of growing pains

In Sussex we have several of these businesses. not the least beingone started in Eastbourne in the 1900's (from even earlier beginnings-the middle of the 19th century, as an Iron mongers Shop).

In their Board Room is a Licence to sell Petrol issued to the Grand-father of the present Managing Directors in 1865.

Need it be said that this finn is Caifyns Ltd., whose Branches inBrighton are in Dyke Road; in Hove at Kingsway and elsewhere will befound all over Sussex and Kent-in fact you can hardly drive twenty milesanywhere in these Counties without seeing one of them.
