experts had cordoned off the area.According to the deceased’s wife,

Ms Seani Ramahana, her husband left for work on Tuesday and that was the last time he was seen alive.

“When I came back from work at 17:00, he was not back and I did not suspect anything. I became worried when he was not back at 21:00. I phoned both his phones, but they were off,” she said.

She further indicated that she alerted the family about the fact that he was missing and opened a missing person’s fi le with the police on Thursday. She was later informed that a body had been found at a dumping site nearby.

“The police took me to the mortuary, where I identifi ed him through the watch he was wearing. It was a shocking experience for me. I have never come close to a dead body, but circumstances forced me to do so, and what I saw was shocking a person roasted like a piece of meat by another human being,” she said.

She added that the whole incident was like a bad dream to her. “I have lost a good man who cared for the whole family and we had dreams of a big family together. I will miss him dearly,” she said.

Cllr Thomani Thabela, one of

the fi rst to arrive at the scene, said they were alerted to the incident by a truck driver who was collecting sand at the area. “What we saw was sickening. A person roasted like a lamb for a feast. I have never seen this form of cruelty in my life,” he said.

He said it was not the fi rst incident of this kind to happen in the area.

“Some years back, a local man was found burnt and squeezed into a cave; since then, there have been so many crimes in this area.” Civic leader Musiwalo Nemataheni said there was a

need for the police to patrol the area. “We have experienced an upsurge in crimes such as robberies, muggings, rapes and housebreakings in this area over a period of time.” Vuwani police spokesperson W/O Elijar Malatjie

said that the circumstances leading to Sankotsane’s death would only be known when investigations were completed. “We suspect that the man might have been murdered somewhere else and dumped at the area by the killer or killers. We are making an appeal to the public out there to assist us with information that could lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of the perpetrators. Someone, somewhere might have witnessed this gruesome incident. Please help us!” he said.

Water slides, fun rides, water tunnels and pools are among the activities that will be enter-taining the region’s young ones at Shuma Park in Shayandima tomorrow (Saturday).

The spring event, aimed at entertaining the region’s children, promises also to be educational. One of the organizers, Mr Phathutshedzo Nemaguvhuni, said they had invited various

government departments and organizations to assist in educating the young ones.

The Kiddies wild fun explosion event was established by two organizations, the Taluphanda and Ventso projects.

Nemaguvhuni said that the children would also receive infor mation about safety in their communities.

“This will help the children

understand the paramount importance of their safety and how they can protect themselves from the brutality of criminal activities,” he said.

The young ones will pay R40 entrance fee at the gate and their parents will pay R20. Despite the payment, the organizers have promised to accommodate more than 250 orphans in the region free of charge.

At around 02:00 in the morning last Thursday, Ms Rudzani Mutshekwana heard screams of people trying to extinguish a fire at Tshakhu-ma-Muhovhoya. When she went out to investigate, she was greeted with the horrible news that her brother’s house was burning ferociously. Although community members managed to extinguish the fire, it was already too late as her brother

was already dead inside the house.

Mr Samuel Mutshekwana (51) was apparently asleep in his house, which is adjacent to his sister’s house. It is speculated that the electric bulb in the room was not working and he allegedly lit a candle. The candle may have fallen over, causing the fire.

According to the police report, the community members only found out that there was a person

inside the house after extinguishing the fire with the assistance of a fire truck.

No foul play is suspected, but the Levubu police are investigating the incident.

The police spokesperson W/O Solly Mukhola said experts were investigating to find out what had really caused the fire. “We have opened an inquest and further investigations are underway,” he said.

A police constable from Mpumalanga was arrested at Dzimauli on Friday on charges of armed robbery and murder.

The police spokesperson in Mutale, W/O Tshilidzi Nyambeni, said in a statement that Const Livhuwani Lawrence Matodzi (30), attached to the police service in Delmas, went to the Maraxwe Supermarket on Friday morning. It is alleged that he shot the owner with his service pistol and stole money and airtime vouchers.

“According to the information we have, the incident happened around 10:00 on Friday,” Nyambeni said. He added that Matodzi was allegedly driving a Toyota bakkie belonging to his elder brotherinlaw and was reportedly in the company of his younger brotherinlaw, Ndivhuwo Mmbobo (31).

“It was reported to us that Matodzi had allegedly shot the Somalian shop owner, Mr Dobsmo Tamirai Handamo (38), three times in the left side of his chest and took R1 601.70 and airtime vouchers. They then drove away, but EPWP workers heard the shots and chased the suspects and cornered them into a trench that had been created by floods.”

It was reported to the police that, after realizing that he was trapped, Matodzi made a Uturn and drove straight at the charging workers. He allegedly fired two shots into the air and then sped off.

The police arrested Matodzi at Dzimauli and Mmbobo later; he was found in possession of Matdozi’s service pistol, nine rounds of ammunition, stolen cash and airtime vouchers.

Matodzi and Mmbobo appeared in the Mutale Magistrate’s Court on Monday (15 September) and the cases have been postponed to today (Friday). They remain in custody. Ndivhuwo Mmbobo.

Murder near the Place of Safety The crime-infested Thohoyandou township suffered yet another act of criminality when a man was found murdered on Tuesday morning.

The man, believed to be in his late twenties, was found by early morning passersby on their way to work in Thohoyandou.

The bloodied body, with open wounds on the left side, was found near the Thohoyandou Place of Safety. It is suspected that he was killed around 04:00 on Tuesday morning. It was not immediately clear whether the man had been shot or stabbed, but there was blood everywhere, from the Maniini robots and back to the gate at the Place of Safety.

It is suspected that the man tried in vain to get help, until he collapsed and bled to death not far from the security gate next to the Thohoyandou Place of Safety.

The murder occurred after a house robbery at one of the homes occupied by Indians in Block G. People suspect that the man might have been killed by his partners in crime, probably over the loot they took from the family.

People who live nearby allege that they heard a gunshot at around 03:00.

One lane of the road leading to Thohoyandou had to be closed while forensic investigators combed the area

for clues. Many people gathered as news of the bloodied body spread all over the township. A woman called Ndivho, who lives nearby in Block G, said crime had become a major headache in the township. “We live in constant fear in this area. We only hear of robberies, housebreakings and other crimes. My room was broken into not long ago and my bag with money and other valuables was stolen.”

Thohoyandou police spokesperson Major Mashudu Malelo confirmed the incident, but could not be drawn into linking the murder with the robbery that had taken place in the same area the same day. “A man, aged around 28, was found with wounds but his identity is not known. We have opened a murder docket,” he said.

Cultural heritage celebrations at Mapungubwe

The Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage site was a hive of activities last week during a huge cultural heritage celebration.

Various local artists exhibited their work in an effort to promote and support indigenous music and art.

The annual heritage celebration event was hosted simultaneously with the government’s initiative to promote access to South African national parks.

SANParks, in partnership with First National Bank (FNB), opened doors to public from last Tuesday until Friday to allow public to enjoy the natural beauty that South African parks have to offer. The week was established under the theme

“Know Your National Parks.”The initiative has allowed Mapungubwe to use

the opportunity to promote culture and heritage celebrations. The park manager, Mr Fhatuwani Mugwabana, said the festival was a unique opportunity for the visual arts community to experience, see and buy a large selection of artworks from the province. “We went the extra mile and made a comprehensive selection of artist in the Vhembe district,” said Mr Mugwabana.

The event ended on Saturday with various local artist and indigenous groups performing their cultural dances and indigenous music.

The performances were opened with the python

dance (Domba) by young girls of the Ngwana Cultural Group from Jumbo Progress Combined School. To show that they are proud of their culture, they also performed the Malende. The girls’ teacher, Ms Ngwana, said she was proud of their culture and their school was meant to restore the culture and dignity of the Vhavenda people. “We want to restore our own rules because we are proud of our culture,” she said.

Among the other artists who performed were Conerstone, Vhavenda Vho Matsheka, Dinaka Cultural group, Dietlaetla cultural group, Naledzani Netshirembe, Burning Doctor and Mr Makhwara Mutondi.

There is a saying: “Do not judge the book by its cover”. This say-ing captures what Christ told the Pharisees: “Stop judging by mere appearances, and make a right judgment” (Matthew 7:24). This contradicts the spirit of the day - in contemporary culture, people are judged by their looks. I re-member when Venda was burning because of witch hunts, one only had to have certain features to be branded a witch: “dark black”, “red eyes” and “ugly” by human standards. The Pharisees had the same attitude of judging people because of what they saw.

Jesus taught them the importance of inner beauty. A person’s value and worth should emanate from the inner self. Jesus repeated the same teaching about inner beauty in Luke 11:37-41. In this case he focused on two issues, namely (1) cleaning the inside of the cup and (2) cleaning the outside of the cup. Striving towards inner beauty is a spiritual exercise. It is contrasted with the spirit to clean the outside of the cup. Real meaning of inner beauty in this context is:

We are talking about purity of the heart: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God” (Mat-thew 5:8). In this instance we are talking assurance of your salvation;

We are talking about a Christ-like life: “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is

right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praise-worthy – think about such things” (Philippians 4:8).

We are talking life of being driven by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is the first deposit that guarantees you your faith (Ephesians 1:14). We are instructed to lead a life that responds to the lead and guidance of the Holy Spirit at all times. “Do not put out the Spirit’s fire” (1 Thessalonians 5:19). 1 Thessalonians 5:20-28 continues to define how best we can achieve this.

When a woman is adorned with this beauty, she is able to live and behave in such a way that she be-comes a noble wife whose heart is in saving her marriage.

There are women who will leave their husbands for other men because their husbands can’t afford to pay for their expensive lifestyles. Inner beauty, however, is an antidote to divorce.

One adorned with inner beauty will always be a loving person, re-spectful and willing to do everything in her power to ensure that her marriage will never come to an end. This woman strives to listen to the voice of God in the Scriptures and do God’s will with regard to her marriage.

Rendani Ramavhoya (21) of Miluwani went missing on 17 April, after telling her boyfriend she was going home. She was staying with him, a student at Univen at one of the rented residences in Thohoyandou. Since then she has never been seen again.

Rendani, who is light in complexion, has a short stature and was last seen wearing a white tshirt and blue jeans.

avhoya, said she did not know about the disappearance until last week when she enquired about her whereabouts. “I was under the impression that she was staying with her boyfriend, but only came to know that she was not there just recently, and that was when I opened a missing person’s file with the police.”

A 35-year-old Zimbabwean woman was nabbed at the Beit Bridge port of entry after she was found in possession of explosives last Friday.

According to the spokesperson for the Musina police, Const Dakalo Ramagwede, the driver of a crossborder bus was alerted by the customs police that there were illegal goods inside the bus. The driver stopped the bus and told the passengers that the bus needed to be fixed as there was a mechanical problem.

“All passengers were requested to get out of the bus with their luggage,” Ramagwede said. “The police searched all the people and proceeded

to the bus, where they found a bag with exposives left behind inside the bus.”

The police then inspected the luggage tag on the bag and it matched with one of the passengers’ luggage card. The bag was searched and the contents shocked the passengers. A large quantity of explosives and denotators was discovered inside the bag.

“The suspect was identified as Ms Mary Gwauaya. She appeared in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday,” said Ramagwede.

The case was postponed to 22 September, pending further investigation. She remains in custody.

After living through a hellish week-end, in which three suspects went on a rampant crime spree, the community of Nzhelele can now once again sleep soundly.

Local police have confirmed this week that two of the tree men who are suspected of causing widespread fear among the community are behind bars. They were arrested last Tuesday (9th) after they had allegedly hijacked an Indian businessman, Mr Inyat Abdul Patel (42) of Makhado (Louis Trichardt), at gunpoint along the Witvlag road.

According to information supplied by the police, Norman Raluswinga (30) and Tumelo Naledzani Matsipi (32) are also accused of a spate of other crimes that left

the Nzhelele community fearing for their lives. A third suspect was still at large at the time of going to press.

The community’s weekend of anguish started on Friday, 5 September, when the Toyota Corolla of Mr Matidzha Muraga was stolen from outside his house at HaRaliphaswa Village.

Muraga’s vehicle was removed from his home through a hole thieves had cut into his fence.

When he woke up the next morning, his vehicle was missing, and at the time of our going to press, the police were investigating the case and had yet to recover his vehicle.

On the Sunday (7th) the crime spree continued when a security guard, on duty at the HaMavhunga Clinic, was robbed of his service pistol. The guard was attacked by three men who were still unknown to the police at that stage. Only a few hours after this incident, a tuck shop at Mauluma Village was robbed of R1 200 in cash, three cell phones and packets of chicken intestines.

The shop owner was held at gun point by two suspects. The weekend ended in sorrow when W/O Joseph Netshitulame was killed during an armed robbery.

Netshitulame, who was working at the transport division of the Makhado police station, was shot in the stomach by three suspects at the HaMavhunga RDP houses, when he was about to close his tavern. He was taken to the local hospital and later transferred to the provincial hospital. He passed away the following day as a result of a wound sustained from the shooting.

Netshitulame’s family described his passing as a cruel, gruesome and traumatizing event. Talking to Limpopo Mirror last

Tuesday, Mr Thomas Netshitulame, the deceased’s younger brother, said the incident was horrible. “As family we never expected my brother to die like that,” he said.

Netshitulame, from Matanda village, was buried at the village’s local cemetery last Saturday morning. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

Following last week’s botched hijacking and the two’s arrest, the Mphephu police have also confirmed that they found a firearm in the men’s possession. This firearm is currently undergoing ballistic tests in Pretoria to see whether it was used to murder W/O Netshitulame.

Masipi and Raluswinga appeared in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 11 September, on charges of armed robbery, the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and car hijacking. They are also facing charges of business robbery and theft in other local courts.

The two will remain in custody and appear in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court on 18 September for a formal bail application.

Next round of the Venda king (queen)ship battle?The battle to determine who will be the king or queen of the Vhavenda may still be determined in the country’s courts. This legal battle, which has been looming now for several years, seems to be heading for the High Court in Thohoyandou.

According to Mr Johann Hammann, attorney for the applicants, the advocates must file their Heads of Arguments and Practice Notes and then they can apply for a date on which the hearing can take place.

At the end of 2012, the then 21yearold Masindi Clementine Mphephu filed papers in the Thohoyandou High Court, claiming that she should have been next in line for the throne but was overlooked because of gender discrimination. She is the only child of the late paramount chief of the Vhavenda, Tshimangadzo Mphephu (who ruled under the name Dimbanyika)

The second applicant in the case is Mbulaheni Charles Mphephu, eldest son of the late Patrick Mphephu. He argues that, should Masindi not be considered for the kingship position, he would be next in line. They dispute the recommendation made by selected members of the royal family in August 2010 that the rightful incumbent is Toni Mphephu Ramabulana.

The respondents in the case include Toni Ramabulana, Pres Jacob Zuma (who had announced that Toni would be the new king), as well as the national and provincial houses of traditional leaders. The applicants ask the court to firstly set aside the decision to appoint Toni Ramabulana as king and then to declare that the practice of only installing males as traditional leaders be declared unconstitutional.

In the affidavits and replying affidavits filed, the parties disagree on the procedures to appoint a new heir. Mbulaheni

and Masindi believe that, because Toni Ramabulana was appointed as ndumi to his halfbrother Dimbanyika, he should not have been considered for the kingship position. In Mbulaheni’s affidavit, he explains that “In terms of a strict requirement of Vhavenda customary law, the ndumi to a king or queen can never be the next king. This is because the ndumi is one of the closest advisors to the king or queen. It is thus believed that a person in that position would be tempted to kill or displace the king or queen if there was any incentive of succession involved.”

The two applicants also argue that Toni

Ramabulana does not come from the right dzekiso house. The dzekiso wife (or candle wife) is appointed according to certain customs and there may be more than one candle wife to make provision for cases where the first candle wife does not bear children. (This is, however, disputed by some of the respondents).

The legal arguments will, however, firstly focus on the constitutional issue of whether a woman may be ignored when deciding on an heir. Masindi and Mbulaheni’s legal team reckons there are plenty of examples in African history to make out a case for the inclusion of women.

Veteran principal to KhakhuThe community of Mamvuka learnt with disbelief that their energetic and diligent principal, Mr Mashudu Thomas Netshiya, is leaving Manyii Primary School for Khakhu Secondary School in Nzhelele East Circuit.

Netshiya is from HaKhakhu Thondoni and is well known for his community involvement. Among others, he is the leader of the famous Tshikona Khakhu Thondoni Cultural Dance Group. The group performed during the coronation of the late Queen Modjadji VI and at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival, the National Competition for African Cultural Heritage Trust and the Mapungubwe Arts Festival.

Under his leadership, the group obtained many awards.

His qualifications include a secondary teacher’s diploma (Makhado College of Education), a BTech (Tswane University of Technology), an advanced certificate in education from North West University and an advanced management diploma (Southern Business School).

As the circuit and school community bade him farewell, speakers praised him for the hard work and dedication when he was still in Soutpansberg North Circuit. “Netshiya is one in a million. Principals like him are rare to get,” said the the circuit manager, Dr Ntavhanyeni Phaswana.

Trainee firefighter becomes top performing operatorAlice Mandiwana i s a top-performing female oper-ator for De Beers at Venetia Mine, with an average rate of 237 tonnes hauled per

operating hour.She ranks in the top seven

operators on the mine and is the female operator with the highest net operating hours

(NOH) at the time of publication. This means that she is highly efficient and only spends the minimum amount of time idling the earth mov

ing vehicle (EMV) as a result of standbys and delays. Whereas the average operator at Venetia has moved approximately 78 loads to date this year, Alice has hauled 113 loads.

Alice loves working in the mining industry. She enjoys the diverse environment and is energised by the many opportunities for development and leadership. However, mining was not always her dream. She started out as a trainee firefighter desperate for a job and a chance to put bread on the table. After months of unsuccessful job hunting, she made application for the position of operator at De Beers and has never looked back.

Alice’s role sees her responsible for the loading and hauling of kimberlite ore and waste and its offloading at either the waste dumps or the primary crusher. “When I tell people that I drive a CAT 793 truck that can hold up to 234 tonnes, they are disbelieving. They ask me if it is difficult for a woman to control a large machine like that, but I tell

them, it’s not hard it’s easy!”The first time Alice entered

a mine was after her operator training. She was unprepared for the sheer scale of operations, and admits that she was shocked by the size of the tyres and a little intimidated to think that she would be driving such enormous equipment. Two years later, Alice drives one of the largest trucks at Venetia Mine and seems to believe that ‘bigger is better.’ Not one to shy away from a challenge, Alice is eager for training and enjoys learning how to operate other machines. In an environment where people can be superstitious around which roles a woman should and should not undertake, Alice chooses to ignore these folk tales. She says, “As women we need to believe in ourselves and to take every opportunity to be trained”.

As the primary breadwinner in her family, Alice takes her career very seriously and is passionate about providing for her husband, son (3) and daughter (8). “I never would have dreamt that my husband would lose his job. He is the man I love and the father of my children, and it is a privilege to have the kind of job where I can take care of him and my family until he gets back on his feet,” says Alice.

“A nation that does not respect its culture is doomed and does not have any direction,” said Vhavenda King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana.

In an exclusive interview with Limpopo Mirror regarding the importance of Heritage Month, he said that the Vhavenda nation must know its culture and respect heritage sites. “Heritage Month has been expanded to include the diverse cultural heritage of our country,” he said.

“Our area has a rich culture and our dream is to promote and ensure cultural tourism and ecotourism, so as to facilitate social justice and economic upliftment,” he said.

King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana said it was important to preserve

African culture and traditional values in order to build a strong and disciplined nation. Mphephu said Africans must not undermine themselves because African practices were morally acceptable and educational.

“Being educated does not mean that we must disregard our culture. We must learn to go out and preach our cultural gospel with happiness and pride. Our indigenous food is very healthy because it is less processed. The fact that the food is easily accessible and cheap, makes one boast of an African habitat that is rich in useful vegetation and adequate food supply. Most of the health problems that we face today are because of the food that

we eat. It is important to teach our kids to prepare indigenous food to equip them with the knowledge they will use when we depart from this world,” said Mphephu.

“We must be proud of who we are instead of being copycats of other peoples’ cultures. We must learn to love and appreciate our history, tradition and morality because those are the basis from which a strong nation develops. Our indigenous languages should also be preserved for the benefit of the young generation and the community at large,” said Mphephu.

The African National Congress’s Makhado sub-region recently elected its new top brass during an elective conference at the Makha-do show grounds. Five executive and five additional members were elected.

A former deputy chairperson of the subregion, Mr Elvis Lebea, was elected the new chairperson, while the councillor for Ward 35, Mr John Mamafha, is the new deputy chairperson. Mr Johnson Lukheli, the former deputy secretary, was elected the new secretary. Cllr Nndwakhulu Kutama is the new deputy secretary.

The portfolio head of planning, economic development, tourism and traditional affairs in the Makhado municipality, Cllr Teboho Mamorobela, was elected as the new treasurer of the subregion.

According to the MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture, Ms Nandi Ndalane, the government encourages “a lifelong culture of reading.” She said that the people could bring their laptop computers, cell phones and tablets to access the wifi Internet connection in the library. “We will offer the reading space, books to read, study and write assignments and provide the children’s library, where young children will learn coordination and mental skills. It will also help to take them off the streets and learning will help them to become better future

Ms Virginia Myambo said they used to linger around without a place to go, but now they would have access to books, look for jobs advertised in the newspapers and use the Internet.

Mackson’s creative abilities not limited by his crutches

Musina Local Municipality joined all South Africans in celebrating the recent Arbor Week.

Through the subdirectorate of Waste Management, Parks and Recreation of the Musina Municipality, indigenous trees were planted at various schools around Musina. The schools include Bonwa Udi Primary, Gateway Primary, St Martin De Pores Primary, Renaissance High, Nehemiah, Musina High, Messina Laerskool, Madimbo Primary, Domboni Primary, Rixile Primary and Beit Bridge.

Before planting indigenous trees at Beit Bridge Primary, Mayor Mihloti Ramoyada said trees played a vital role in the health and wellbeing of

the community. “Besides providing us with shelter, trees absorb harmful toxins in the atmosphere and release muchneeded oxygen. Trees are a source of building material and produce food and can be used as medicine.”

She emphasized that the occasion afforded people the opportunity to be involved “in greening our communities. It is therefore important for the public to join hands with us to preserve trees, because they have multiple benefits for communities. Let us plant more trees because trees have more benefits to us and the environment.”

Mackson Mbaziwa Mathonsi is a multi-talented individual whose creative abilities are not limited by the fact that he uses crutches.

Mathonsi is an experimental sculptor, musician, fashion designer and chairperson of a centre for disabled people currently based at Mninginisi Block 3 in Giyani.

Standing between a jackal and humansized bust which he had carved out of wood, Mathonsi told Limpopo Mirror that he started experimenting with sounds for music, carving wood, and tearing and piecing together cloth

from a very young age.“I told myself that I would not al

low my physical disability to limit me from setting goals and working harder to achieve those goals,” he said.

Mathonsi is a lead vocalist in his musical group, Makumbila Lucky Mzala, where he also plays lead guitar. The group’s debut album, Ka Madyisa, comprises songs such as Ka Madyisa, Ni Lava Ku Dyela, Va Hi Holovisa, Swita Vavana and Hahani.

“Swita Vavana means that there would be a storm of dust when friends and family members meet to celebrate

life through music,” he said. “We also composed the song Maveriveri to encourage spouses to live in peace and harmony. Spouses fight and separate because other people gossip and spread malicious rumours about one of the spouses.”

Mathonsi also heads a nonprofitorganisation project, Tiva Rixaka Project for the Disabled, of which he has been the chairperson for some years now.

“We started the project because we wanted to do things for ourselves as disabled people. We also wanted to protect young disabled persons from all kinds of abuse by removing them from the harsh streets, where people send them for endless errands.”

Tiva Rixaka also keeps the disabled people busy by teaching them horticulture, knitting, sculpture making and other related skills which are beneficial to them.

“We have 35 disabled persons in the project and at least 17 volunteers,” Mathonsi said. “Indeed, we are getting somewhere as a project. We hope to create a means of generating money for the project some time in the near future, so that we can give our volunteers a stipend.”

He told Limpopo Mirror that he is also a fashion designer who sews traditional attire and western suits for locals. “You see this suit (he holds the scuff of his jacket) I designed it for myself,” he said. “I wear it when I do music performances.”

Londanani Care Centre for the Disabled at Ha-Rabali at Nzhelele held a ceremony two weeks ago to celebrate and support activities for persons with disabilities. Various stakeholders and schools in the area collaborated to raise funds for the children. Headman Sam Rabali said the disable were like any other person and they should be respected. “Every day should be casual day. The whole community, teachers and parents should all support these children,” he said. Ishmael newBreed Rammbwa is a producer, singer, music arranger and multi-instrumen-talist who has a good ear for rhythm and sound.

The 26-year-old producer is slowly but surely establishing himself in the industry which contin-ues to frustrate even seasoned practitioners as a result of the spread of piracy. “I am not fazed by the spread of piracy,” he states. “I remain focused and goal directed.”

newBreed set a milestone in his music career when he worked with the legendary musician Vho-April Samuel Ramufhi on his comeback album, Tshanda Tshi a Levha. Ramufhi noticed young newBreed performing at a party with a band and requested his contact details.

“He said he liked my music,” he says. The next thing, Mr Peter Maleti, who came from Muraleni with Ramufhi, brought Ramufhi to the studio and requested the studio to revive his talent.

The young producer says that working with Ramufhi was an unforgettable achievement in

his life. “It was my fi rst time working with a legendary musician,” he shares his ex-periences. “He

correc-ted

me a lot and he also accepted my critique on other issues relating to sound and arrangement. When I heard songs from our project playing on radios and saw the article in Limpopo Mirror, I knew that I had done some good work in the history of the traditional music.”

His music credentials include working with three children from the Tshilwavhusiku Ra-zwimisani Special School. The group is called Special Force. “Some of the children come to me without even a small knowledge on how to write lyrics, but I am patient enough to help build up a song, word by word,” he says. He started playing drums at church. He would move from the drums to rhythm guitar or keyboards when one of the players were not present. “That’s how I got to play all instruments,” he reveals. He has worked with artists from different genres, such as C-Man (Lufuno Lwa Vhabebi and Vuwani), Tha-bo Mamphaga (Vho Fanelwa), Bhamba (Trouble in Paradise), Dream Catcher (Mvulatswinga), Prisca (Khonani Vhukuma), Comingo Familie (Vhembe Rhythms), and BornWise (Lufuno Lwo Fhela). The director at Ballitainment Media, Mr Ballican Sikhwari, couldn’t stop singing the praises of newBreed. “I see him as everything in the studio; he can compose, produce and he’s an

author,” says Sikhwari. newBreed is busy in the studio, working on several indi-vidual projects for singers such as Jonny ‘Vho-Mahwayi’ Malungisa and C-Man.

“It all started as a hobby, but I am con-fi dent today to say that music is part of my

life and my daily bread,” he concludes.

There was a time when choral sounds were part of popular culture in homes, workplaces and schools. The newly formed Nzhelele Choir recently claimed this space and released their debut album, Mulamuleli.

This package boasts 13 songs which connect the listener to the spiritual realm. The album opens up with the a capella Vharunwa. In this song, a praise-singer tells the story of Lot in the Bible, who welcomed two angels into his home at night. The style used in this song is reminiscent of the music made popular by groups such as Masole A Tumelo, Makgarebe A Bochabela and Bana Ba Kanana.

“The title track, Mulamuleli, reminds listen-ers that God saves people from all forms of danger, trouble and problems,” said the group’s co-founder, Mr Mpho Miriri.

to lead a prayerful lifestyle. The choir gives a fresh, refreshing rendition of the song Holokile. It is a piece of music fi lled with words of hope after a person has lived a meaningless life. Now there’s a need to go into privacy to spend time in the presence of God. The choir was incepted and formed by Mr Maumela Sebola and Miriri. According to Miriri, all the members had re-ceived motivation and guidance from singer Trica Selala. “The singers needed grounding, so that they could stand steady musically,” said Miriri. Selala introduced the choir to Michael Radzilani, who recorded the choir’s fi rst album at his studio.

Nzhelele Choir boasts 20 members. One of the choir members, Mr Phumudzo Khavhakhavha, said that he enjoyed singing in the choir. “I love singing and I am happy that I fi nally met people who also share my love of singing,” he said.

Dutch volunteer to teach Takalani’s kidsThe Takalani Children’s Home at Siloam in Nzhe lele recently welcomed Ms Tineke Noor-landt (28), a volunteer from Holland.

Noorlandt’s stint at the home covers a duration of three months. She has a variety of duties to perform in the centre. “My main duty is to assist children with their homework and to prepare them for their exams,” she said. “I also play guitar and sing a lot of songs with them. I also give them selfconfidence training.”

Noorlandt is a trained, qualified teacher. She teaches Grade 2 at a primary school in Holland. “It was possible for me to ask for a leave, so that I can offer free work to the children here at Takalani Children’s Home,” she said.

She plays different kind of games with children. She also teaches them painting. “I bake cakes and pizza, and give them a wonderful time!” she marvelled. “Once a week, we’re having boys’ night or ladies’ night. They learn from me, and I also learn from them.”

It seems that Noorlandt has a keen interest in children and working with them. After only a couple of weeks at the centre, she already knows each child by his or her name. She added that she was enjoying her stay at the home. The contacts and interaction with the children and the staff are what really make her feel at home. “I really feel blessed to be here,” she expressed. “I have become part of the family, and that is really special.”

It is not the first time that Noorlandt has visited South Africa. She first came to the country last year with a friend. “I stayed for a month, but that was too short,” she said. “It was my first time in South Africa and I enjoyed a lot. This time around, I had time to visit the Kruger National Park. And all I can say is that South Africa is a beautiful country.”

She added that she especially loved to see the mountains. “We don’t have them in Holland. I feel really blessed,” she said.

The home’s director, Mrs Rosinah Tshikovhele, said that Noorlandt was a volunteer under the auspices of the Deputaten Diaconaat Christelike Gereformeerde Kerken in Nederland, who have been playing the part of a major donor of the home since its inception in 1988.

“We thank Noorlandt for her educational and recreational contributions to the lives of our children,” she said. “We have seen her measureless love for children. She has a heart of gold. Her caring spirit is what makes her amazing.”

Five Musina-based shop owners appeared in the Musina Magistrate’s Court after they had allegedly bought boxes of stolen shoes.

The shop owners, He Lsanke (31), Nusin Pslam (24), Hossain Sazzad (24), Ahmed Sattid (33) and Yasim Yasin (28), all bought shoes which were allegedly stolen from a delivery truck.

The truck, which was from Johannesburg, was hijacked along the N1road and robbed of many boxes of shoes.

According to the spokesperson for the Musina police, Const Dakalo Ramagwede, it is alleged that the suspects who hijacked the truck were wearing police uniforms. “The suspects then allegedly sold the stolen items to shop owners in Musina,” Ramagwede said.

Ramagwede indicated that the police managed to recover only 158 boxes of shoes. “Four Bangladeshi nationals and a Chinese national, all males, allegedly bought those shoes, so that they could sell them from their shops,” Ramagwede said. “We arrested them and they all appeared in the Musina

Magistrate’s Court on 8 September.”The SAPS at Musina are appealing to members

of the community to help them with information regarding an incident of car hijacking which took place on 5 September.

All the suspects were released on R5 000 bail each. Their case was postponed to 17 September, but at the time of going to press, no additional information on the case was available yet.

If the media are not the official opposition of the government, then the time is now for South Africans to enjoy the benefits of “peace or development” journalism.

In peace journalism, there is no oppression and divisive reporting. Through this practice, the journalist tells a good story of those individuals making a difference in their respective communities.

Community development projects, especially those initiated by the government, are the cornerstone of determining the newsworthiness of a potential story.

This is the only type of journalism which could do justice to the black majority who are often portrayed as the leading racial group attracting negative publicity.

During the apartheid era, one way of oppressive reporting was to refer to those who were involved in the liberation struggle as terrorists who were responsible for causing instability in the country.

A call to urge the South African media to practice peace journalism does not suggest that journalists should refrain from playing their role of being a moral watchdog of society by holding the leadership accountable to the electorate since the Constitution does not advocate that as South Africans we should be corrupt.

However, if government communicators don’t sell their “subsidised news” on the massive role the government is playing to improve the lives of the masses, peace journalism will remain a challenge.

I am of the view that peace journalism should start at community newspapers such as the Limpopo Mirror through covering stories that reflect the rainbow nation in Vhembe if not across the province.

This can only be possible if government communicators begin to respect and take reporters from community media seriously by respecting their deadlines and availing themselves to answer questions all the time.

This view is also shared by our new Communications Minister, Faith Muthambi, who said community media are at the heart of the government’s new strategic approach of revolutionising the communication agenda in South Africa.

“Government takes the issue of community media very seriously and it’s at the heart of our new strategic approach as department especially

with regard to communication which empowers our people.

“We need to change the mindset of feeding our communities, especially those in rural areas, only news stories happening in Parliament, Pretoria and Johannesburg. We are very serious about improving community media because they are closest to the people. This also enables us as government to localise the communication,” she said.

I fully share Minister Muthambi’s view that community media are underutilised in the country. Indeed, if we were utilising this communication platform to enhance social cohesion especially in Makhado, our country would be different today.

Muthambi wants government communicators to improve the way they communicate, as well as having a good working relationship with the entire media industry, community media included.

When we begin to utilise the community media, provincial communicators and those in local municipalities will refrain from placing advertisements that are more relevant to community media in mainstream media.

Even in community media, news is something unusual, but we still want to see the positive stories about the government development initiatives taking place in our communities.

Black Leopards rescue Thivhilaeli SchoolAnother draw for Limpopo’s Baroka FCLast Monday was a memora-ble day for a Vhembe-based schools, Thivhilaeli High School.

After several months of moving from door to door, asking for donations to build ablution blocks, the principal, Mr Humbulani Mudau, finally met what he described as a “Good Samaritan” in the form of the chairman of Black Leopards, Mr David Thidiela.

After explaining to Thidiela about the damage caused to the schools ablution blocks by the heavy rains early last year, Thidiela did not think twice and decided to help the struggling school.

Mudau said that the soccer boss advised him to go and get three quotations from different hardware shops. He gave the quotations to Thidiela, who decided to accept the second highest quotation, which was about R21 000.

T h e c e r e m o ny during which a cheque of R22 000 was presented to the principal was held at the Thohoyandou Sasol Garage hall on Monday afternoon. When p r e sen t i ng the cheque, Thidiela

said that it was the club’s social responsibility to give a portion of the club’s income back to needy communities.

Principal Mudau stated that words could not express their appreciation towards Thidiela, saying the club and Thidiela must live long, so that needy communities could continue to benefit.

According to him, some of the people who also lended helping hands include Pastor VW Madzinge of the Christ

Worship Centre (CWC), who donated R10 000, Mash Motors Garage (R1500) and Pastor Freddy Siphorogo of the Christian Faith Fellowship Church, who gave them 20 bags of cement.

Mudau stated that the school was left with only six toilets to cater for 875 learners, 34 teachers and 10 support staff members after 18 toilets were damaged beyond repair by the heavy showers that fell in the area early last year.

African Warriors played to a 11 draw with Santos and two matches, Thanda Royal Zulu vs Vasco da Gama and FC Cape Town vs Lamontville Golden Arrows, ended in goalless draws.

Highlandspark beat Witbank Spurs 21 at the Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa, while Black Leopards disappointed their home crowd by playing to a 11 draw with Garankuwa United at the Thohoyandou Stadium.

Davhana tops in netball and soccer Phandulaluvalo Davhana High School are the netball and soccer champi-ons of the Baso Foundation competition that was held at Davhana a fortnight ago.

Mr Takalani Manyuma, manager of MVE Consulting Engineers, the sponsors of the event, said that it was important to encourage and nurture young players.

“We need to work hard together to develop future champions,” he said.

He mentioned that it was also one of the aims of the sponsorship to keep the youth busy in a productive way. He stated that his company would support the school because it ran an open, clean and transparent competition. According to him, sport is an important vehicle for harmonious interaction between people.

The coordinator, Mr Masinga Mabaso, praised the sponsors. “I’m very proud that we have

grown young people of real quality,” he said. He further said that the school appreciated the selfl ess contribution of Phadziri Bus Service, CocaCola, Hasivho Trading and Projects, Spar Vuwani and Globe Finance and Love Life, who were all in the forefront of developing the local youth.

In the netball, Davhana High beat Tshimbupfe High 52, while their soccer team beat Matodzi High 21.

Phandulaluvalo FC were crowned the champi-ons of the Nev Production Soccer Challenge at the Tshifudi grounds on Sunday.

Phandulaluvalo beat Mahagala Young Stars 21 in the fi nal of the competition. Phandulaluvalo were presented with R4 000 during the ceremony, held at the grounds shortly after the fi nal.

The runnersup, Mahagala Young Stars, took home R2 500. Mutale Vikings, who obtained the third position, were presented with R1 500. Mutale Vikings beat The Dolphins 21 in their losers’ fi nal match, which was played at the same venue before the fi nal.

The fourthplaced Dolphins FC received R1 000 during the ceremony. The teams which were booted out of the competition in the quarterfi nal stage were each given a consolation prize of

Davhana High’s netball team with their trophy and new netball kit.

Huge boost for local soccerRamukakati unbeatable in Heritage tournamentCash prizes amounting to R254 000 were distributed among 126 teams during a glittering cer-emony held at the Makhado show grounds hall last Friday.

During the ceremony, the president of Safa Vhembe, Mr George Kubayi, appealed to people to refrain from assaulting match officials. He also empahsised that it was bad for the teams to win matches by bribing match officials.

He appealed to the management committee of the association to liaise with the local municipality regarding the upgrading of sports facilities in the area.

Kubayi thanked the Limpopo Dairy company and VhoMakhadzi Funerals for developing soccer in the rural areas and said it was very wise for the owners to plough back what they received from the community.

According to Vhamusanda VhoTshililo Kanakana, managing d i r ec to r o f VhoMakhadzi Funerals, they will continue, and possibly increase, the sponsorship. “The sponsorship is a token of appreciation for the support we are getting from communities,”

she said. She also appealed to other businesspeople to follow VhoMakhadzi Funerals’ example and said it was brutal for businesspeople to enrich themselves at the expense of the people and do nothing in return towards the development of the area.

Champion bare-knuckle fistfighter Thuso Ramukakati was on top of his game and not only scared all his oppo-nents, but stole the heart of Vhavenda King Toni Mphephu and other chiefs during the masungwe bare-knuckle fistfighting contest during the Heritage Day celebrations at Nandoni Royal Gardens on Friday.

The festivities started with a fun walk

led by the king, Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli, Thovhele Kennedy Tshivhase, Dep Min Obed Bapela and Executive Mayor Tshitereke Matibe. They walked the full 15 km from MTG Funerals to the royal gardens. Thousands of people, including elderly people, braved the scorching heat and completed the full distance.

Twelve masungwe fights took place, but when Thuso Ramukakati stood up

and roared like a lion, no one dared stand to challenge him. Then, out of nowhere, a brave man stood up, but before he could realize what was happening, Ramukakati had floored him with a left hook. The man was taken for emergency treatment as he was bleeding heavily.

“I started fighting at a very young age, and so far I have fought more than 40 fights and have only two losses. I believe

in hard work for good results and that is the reason I trained hard. I do not believe that muti works in the ring,” said the 25yearold contract worker from MatangariTshiawelo outside Thohoyandou.

King Toni Mphephu said the day was meant to remind his subjects not to forget their culture and heritage.“We felt we should at least meet with our people and we thought people’s health is of utmost importance.”

He added that musangwe was part of the Vhavenda heritage which taught the young respect and also showed the bravery of the Vhavenda people.

The Makhado Local Municipality has put aside R10 million to upgrade the sport centre at the Vuwani Mandani grounds. A further R6 million has been allocated for the renovation of the Bun-geni Stadium.

The Sanco of Tshithuthuni in Nzhelele is inviting members of the public to attend a four km fun walk next Wednesday (24 September).

The initiative is aimed at emphasising the importance of a healthy lifestyle to the elders in Tshithuthuni village. The chairperson of the local Sanco, Mr Muraida Netshivhulana, said the initiative would help to curb ailments such as high blood pressure, stress, asthma, diabetes and many other diseases. This is the second fun walk, following the successful one held on 17 August.

The fun walk will start at 05:30 from the Siloam Road to the Tshithuthuni Royal Kraal. “Our elders are always sitting at home doing nothing. We want to infl uence them to exercise and look after their health,” said Netshivhulana.

The annual Two Countries Marathon from Zimbabwe to Musina was won by Zimbabwean Nkosiyazi Sibanda once again.

It was his fi fth victory in this prestigious race and he fi nished the race in 2:25:57. Last year, he won the race in 2:27:00.

Lionel Muchena of Nedbank Athletics Club fi nished in second position in 2:28:12 and Lucas Nonyana third in 2:29:59.

Another Zimbabwean, Tawapo Bhiri, won the ladies’ race in 3:12:42. Last year, the winner of the ladies’ race won in 3:09:32. The second position went to veteran Jane Mudau (3:23:46), who also won the masters’ race, and Azwindini Lukhwareni fi nished in third place, in 3:30:36.

The winner in the men’s halfmarathon was Gilbert Mutandiro from Zimbabwe, who fi nished the race in 1:05:36. Rapson Chigara of Nedbank fi nished second (1:06:51) and Givemore Mudzinganyama third in 1:11:17. Samukeliso Moyo of Mr Price Athletics Club won the halfmarathon for ladies in 1:23:16, with Muchaneta Gwata second in 1:29:43.

Thomas Ngobeni of Arangwa Athletic Club won the halfmarathon for masters in 1:21:14 and Elias Gizane was the fi rst grand master home in 2:58:34

The winners of the marathon (men and women) went home with R3 000 each. The top four athletes of the whole event shared prize money of

“This will also benefi t the locals economically,” he added.

The president of the Makhado LFA, Mr Joseph Maphaha, applauded the municipality. He acknowledged that are

A must win game against Witbank Spurs on Sunday

The fi nals of the Amos Charity Shield Soccer Tournament will take place at the Tshakhuma Malaria grounds tomorrow.

Tshakhuma Na Ndilani FC and FC KK will meet in the fi nal of the senior teams. The U/13 teams that have booked places in the fi nal are Yebo Yes and Shooting Stars.

The day’s programme will commence at 10:00 when the U/13 teams Young Tigers and Blue Birds meet in their losers’ fi nal match. Yebo Yes and Shooting Stars will battle it out in the fi nal starting at 12:00. Maweja Takers and Tshakhuma RO United will rub shoulders in the losers’ fi nal of the senior teams

at 13:00.The main match between

Tshakhuma Na Ndilani and FC KK is scheduled to start at 15:00. R7 500, a fl oating trophy and gold medals are awaiting the champions of the competition in the senior teams. The runnersup will take home R4 500 and silver medals, with the thirdplaced team will receive R2 500 and bronze medals. The last team will go home with R1 000.

Individual awards will also be presented to the best player, top goal scorer, best goalkeeper, most disciplined player, best coach and the best referee in the tournament.

The champions in the U/13

category will become R2 500 richer and they will also receive a fl oating trophy. The second and third teams will receive R1 500 and R1 000 respectively.

FC KK are the defending champions. They will pin their hopes on their captain, Itani Ngange, and Mulalo Liphadzi for goals while their defender, Tshifhiwa Ndou, is expected to keep the danger area clean throughout. On the other hand, Tshakhuma Na Ndilani’s strikers, Rofhiwa Netshiungani and Ndamulelo Mukwevho, are geared to keep FC KK’s defence running. Tshifhiwa Mmbooi’s presence will give good shape to Tshakhuma Na Ndilani’s defence.

Black Leopards must win their match against Witbank Spurs at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Witbank on Sunday if they are serious about gaining promo-tion to the Absa Premiership Division at the end of the season.

Leopards are still to win a league match this season. Although they are leaving no stone unturned in their preparations for the match, it will not be easy for them to come back with maximum points. Spurs will be fi ghting it like a wounded tiger,

after losing 12 to Highlandspark at the Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa last weekend.

Lidoda Duvha will be without their young striker, Sanele Mkize, on Sunday. He was taken off the pitch on the stretcher in their game against Garankuwa United at the Thohoyandou Stadium last Saturday. Spurs’ goal poacher, Cleopas Dube, will give the Leopards defenders, Marks Munyai and Dunga Munga, a tough time if he is not properly contained.

The other match that will also be played on Sunday will be between Vasco Da Gama and Cape Town All Stars at the Parow Park Stadium in Cape Town. Jomo Cosmos, who are still fresh from a 03 defeat at the hands of Milano United, will host FC Cape Town at the Isak Steyn Stadium in Thembisa tomorrow, while Lamontville Golden Arrows will lock horns with African Warriors at the Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban.

Maluti FET College will entertain Thanda Royal Zulu at the Charles Mopedi Stadium, while Baroka FC will host Highlandspark at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. Santos will play against Royal Eagles at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town this evening, while Garankuwa United will host Milano United at the Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria.

Benny’s Care Soccer Academy were too strong for Hudson Ntswanwisi High and beat them 1-0 in the provincial fi nal of the Copa Coca-Cola U/15 competition at the Makhuvha Stadium on Saturday.

Hudson had nobody to blame but themselves for the defeat. They squandered numerous obvious chances in the fi rst half. The leading goal scorer, Charles Montjane, could not live up to his reputation as he was well contained by Khathutshelo Raulinga. Rebone Ntsoane and Joseph Mokolo of Hudson should have scored more than twice each, but it was clearly not their day to be famous.

The team from Nkowankowa matched Benny’s punch for punch in the fi rst half, but their original stamina faded. Benny’s then started to take command of the game, searching for goals. The

pressure increased on their opponent’s defenders, who continuously made mistakes. The guys who were giving the Hudson defence a terrible headache were Vukosi Sithole and Sihle Chabalala.

Ntlakuso Rikhotso should have put his team ahead when the match was 64 minutes old, but his shot was saved by Hudson keeper Danny Peta. Both sides frustrated their fans a great deal by wasting obvious chances. Legora Mmatlou scored the only goal of the day after he fi nished off a square ball from Douglas Magonono.

Benny’s will represent Limpopo in the national championships, which will held in Durban early in October.

The fans of Black Leopards left the Thohoy-andou Stadium with sore hearts after their home team played to a 1-1 draw with rookies Garankuwa United in their NFD League match on Saturday.

Just like in their previous two league matches, Black Leopards squandered countless scoring chances in the game. As if they were going to bury the visitors from Pretoria alive, Black Leopards took the game to United from the onset, with their midfi elders distributing some dangerous passes to the strikers.

Lidoda Duvha were forced to effect an early change to their starting lineup in the 14th minute. Their centre forward, Sanele Mkize, was taken off the pitch on a stretcher after sustaining an injury. He was replaced with Maboke Matlakala.

Matlakala caused an upset three minutes after his introduction. He received a precooked pass from Morgan Shivambu and fumbled at the goal fi nish, with the United keeper already beaten. Leonard Ntshangase, Leopards’ dribbling wizard, missed a sitter in the 26th minute.

Later in the match, he received a beautiful pass from Jabulani Ndebele and beat the United’s keeper, Mwenya Chibwe, with a ground cutter. Matlakala was also replaced, in the 64th minute. He sustained a leg injury and was replaced with Abbas Amidu. Amidu formed a deadly combination with Leonard Ntshangase and Valley Tshabangu at the forefront, but it was diffi cult for them to fi nd their way through United’s rocksolid defence.

United found the equalizer in the 78th minute through Conrad Madolo. He blasted in a rocket from close range, giving Leopards’ keeper, Jacob Mokhasi, no chance. Leopards continued to display entertaining football for the remaining part of the game, but they could not fi nd the net for a second time.
