A 22-year-old Malam-ulele woman is in severe pain after she was bru-tally attacked and raped last Wednesday.

She and a friend were head-ing to a clinic at Madonsi village when the incident took place.

According to her, they met an unknown man in a bushy stretch between Greenfarm and Madonsi.

“We met this man and we did not suspect any thing. He just waited for the cars that were on the road to pass before pouncing on us. He covered his face with a hat and and produced a knife, while demanding phones and cash,” she added.

The Bangladesh community in South Africa officially came out in firm support of the worldwide good wishes for Nelson Mandela and for all of South Africa.

The Bangladesh Forum in South Africa joined in the nationwide prayers for the former South African president.

In a joint statement issued in Musina, the president of the forum, Mr Delwar (Delu) Hossain, and the secretary, Mr Ghulam Moheuddin, called on all Bangladeshi citizens living in South Africa to unite in special prayers for the elderly states-man, who is still in hospital.

The statement reads: “We as

Bangladesh nationals living in South Africa give thanks and a special prayer for the Father of the Nation, former President Rolihlahla Nelson Mandela.

“We also request all Bangladesh nationals living in a free and demo-cratic South Africa to continue pray-ing for South Africa’s development and prosperity.

The forum declares its firm sup-port for the South African Gov-ernment.

“We also believe that, by working together, we can do more and bring about a lot of development.”

The statement was issued in Mu-sina on 30 June.

Jail doors have slammed shut behind three rhino poachers.

Three Mozambican citizens each received a five-year jail sentence on Thursday, 10 July, in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court. Augustus Nkuna (40), Foster Nyoni (40) and Manyanga Shiringa (42) were arrested on 13 May last year by the Tshamutum-bu Police while poaching rhinos in the Nwanedi Nature Reserve in the Tshipise area.

Two other suspects were also arrested with the three men, but they were later acquitted on all charges.

Nkuna, Nyoni and Manyanga p leaded guilty in terms of a plea bargain that they entered into with the national prosecuting authority. In addition, the trio also received an additional 12-month suspended sentence.

In the meantime, the police in Musina have arrested another four suspects for allegedly poaching a rhino in the Maremani Nature Con-servancy last Friday.

Three of the five sus-pects are local residents, while the other two are also from Mozambique.

One suspect, howev-er, is still on the loose.

Provincial police spokesperson Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi con-firmed that the suspect managed to escape police custody with rhino horns. During the suspects' arrest, the police seized an unli-censed .458 hunting rifle and five life rounds of ammunition.

“Police are hot on his heels,” said Mulaudzi. At the time of going to press, Mulaudzi could not confirm whether the suspect had been rearrested.

Meanwhile, the other four suspects appeared briefly in the Musina Magistrate’s Court

on Monday, said Mulaudzi. Shumani Phaswan (47), Wilson Mavhungu (38), Thilivhali Mu-laudzi and Michael Sithole (37) were charged with the illegal hunting of a protected species and the possession of an unli-censed firearm.

According to Mulaudzi, Phas-wana and Mavhungu were previ-ously released on similar charges on R1 500 bail each. They were not granted bail on Monday and will remain in custody with their co-accused until their next court appearance on 7 August.

“Starter packs” for former offendersTwenty-one ex-offenders re-cently received a new lease on life, when they were given “starter packs” to start their own businesses.

It came as a result of the part-nership between New Life Af-ter Prison Community Forum (NLAPCF), Correctional Ser-vices and private business.

The packs include welding machines, building scaffolding, carpentry machines, sewing machines, plumbing equipment and car-wash machines. these were handed over by Ms Non-tsikelelo Joilingana, the prison's chief operational officer, NLAP-CFofficials and Vhembe District Municipality's Chief Whip, Mr Tshifhiwa Dali.

The handing-over ceremony took place at NLAPCF’s halfway house at Ha-Mutsha.

Speaking during the handover, Jolingana said correcting the behaviour of offenders was a societal responsibility and that their behaviour should not only be corrected, but they should be fully reintegrated in to their communities.

She said all had a responsibil-ity of changing the behaviour of the offenders and to make them better citizens again.

"The starter kits will redeem their dignity and they will be able to create jobs for themselves and others. We can only urge the community to support their businesses," she said.

NLAPCF board chairperson Mr Watson Tshivhase, him-self a former commissioner of correctional services, said he was excited that correctional services were coming on board.

"We are requesting that parolees be brought to us, so that we can work with them and also train them," he said.

One of the parolees who bene-fitted, Mr Solomon Marima, who had served 11 years in prison, gave an inspiring testimony. "I only had Std 4 when I was ar-rested, but thought of using my time profitably while in prison by studying.

When I was released, I was only left with five modules to complete my BA Communi-cations degree through the University of South Africa. I also did woodwork, and I am very glad that God gave me the breakthrough.

I can testify that prison can change a person who is willing to change and be something in his community," said Marima.

Vhembe confident to win water battleNearly halfway through the ultimatum of 90 days to supply water, the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) is confi-dent that they are winning the battle to restore the constant water supply to the community of Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

Another victory that has been won is that of maintaining trust, despite a court order with the ominous possibility of a prison sentence for contempt of court.

On 17 May, AfriForum ob-tained a second court order from the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria against the municipal manager (MM) of the VDM in person, ordering the MM to see to it that his municipality comply with the first court order within 90 working days. The 90 working days will expire on 26 September.

On 14 July (one day before day 40), VDM’s MM, Mr Ma-sala Makumule, and the chair-person of AfriForum Louis Trichardt, Mr Wally Schultz, had a meeting. Both regarded it as a historic moment, due to their unique kind of co-operation.

“I am confident that Makhado town will continue getting water, even after the 90 days, because it

is the responsibility of Vhembe as water service authority to pro-vide water. I would especially like to mention the support that I got from the Minister who arranged additional funds, the support of our Vhembe exec-utive mayor and the Makhado mayor. I want to thank Wally for his efforts and his trust and his leadership qualities. He does not just talk but visits all the problem areas,” said Makumule.

“I regard this as a historic arrangement between a civil organisation and a municipality. We have succeeded in remain-ing friends. Congratulations, Mr MM, David and Moses for getting us this close to our goal of bringing water to town and retaining our mutual trust, despite all the challenges,” said Schultz. All the while, the court order is there to bring the neces-sary urgency, but the partnership amidst all of that is regarded by the stakeholders as unique. Mr David Mukosi is VDM’s Makhado water superintendent, running around to attend to wa-ter and sewage problems, and Mr Moses Shibambu is of the communications officer, facili-tating the complaints hotline on

the AfriForum Louis Trichardt website.

Although the 90 days are only halfway, Makumule is encour-aged by the promising readings of the levels of the reservoirs. VDM’s legal manager, Adv Dovhani Mulaudzi, who accom-panied the MM, was proud to announce that, within a month after the issuing of the second court order, the reservoirs were full. “In the period between 10 and 16 June, we achieved 100%,” said Mulaudzi.

The four new boreholes in town are there to augment the water supply and at present only the one located near the testing station in Kort Street needs to be used.

Makumule further added that they plan to have spares for both the big and small pump at the Albasini water scheme. The large pump had recently been replaced at a cost of more than R620 000. He announced that a Water Operational Plan was being finalized.

The MM also thanked the community of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) for their patience and for not resorting to marches and rioting.

Businessman Tshidaho Ratshibvumo of Maungani and Mashudu Ndiitwani of Maniini took their relationship to another level when they tied the knot over the weekend. The lavish ceremony, which was attended by guests from around the country, took place at the Thohoyandou Indoor Centre. Mashudu is a qualified nurse.

A woman found in possession of crystal cocaine with an estimated street value of R17 million was arrested on Tuesday at Beit Bridge Border Post.

A national spokesperson for the South African Revenue Service (SARS), Mrs Marika Muller, con-firmed the arrest of the woman. “The drugs were found concealed in a bag of surgical equipment kits being brought into the country by the wom-an,” said Muller.

The woman was, ac-cording to information supplied, travelling from Blantyre in Ma-lawi to Johannesburg. The woman first tried to fool a SARS official who was doing a routine check of the bus, by

showing him a sample of a surgical kit which appeared to be genuine.

"However, on checking the remain-ing kits, the customs officer found a crystalline substance at the bottom of all the kits, which had been concealed by the surgical instruments."

The woman and the drugs were handed over to the police.

She was expected to appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Cocaine found at Beit Bridge

Near death. The victim lies motionless after a vicious attack.

Fasting Muslim worshippers in one of Tho-hoyandou's mosques, who were observing the month of Ramadan, were left shocked when a badly injured and bleeding man collapsed at the gate of their mosque.

The incident happened on Saturday evening at a dark stretch between the main bus rank and the mosque.

The area has been described as one of the most dangerous in Thohoyandou, with several people having been mugged and robbed there.

Over the same weekend, two women who were working a late shift at one of the local supermarkets survived being mugged when eight men attacked them next to the new traffic lights to Maniini. They were rescued by passing motorists.

The circumstances surrounding the latest incident are still sketchy, as the man was badly injured and could only mumble inaudible words. An eyewitness at the scene, Mr Shoeb Ahmed, said they had just come out of the mosque, “when this man came staggering and bloodied and collapsed here. He was with five other people and when we summoned the police, the five ran away," he said.

Thohoyandou police spokesperson Const Avha-farei Tshiovhe appealed to the public to avoid dark areas. She said investigations were continuing.

Community wants justice after death

Theft of expensive and essen-tial water infrastructure in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) and surrounds has compelled the Vhembe District Munici-pality (VDM) to beef up their security.

VDM’s municipal manag-er, Mr Masala Makumule, an-nounced that 60 posts for secu-rity officers, three of whom are for senior security officers, were created for the whole of Vhembe. The senior security officers will do an inspection in loco and will post security officers at critical places or hotspots where infra-structure gets stolen.

“Four security officers will definitely be employed at the Albasini water scheme,” Mr

Makumule said. There have been many out-

cries about the lack of security, by the community at large as well as several associations, such as AfriForum and the Soutpans-berg Ratepayers Association, after the theft of water pumps and cables at the boreholes west of the town.

This important infrastruc-ture was replaced at a cost of R2.4million in December 2011 and was stolen again in January 2012, which resulted in the wors-ening of the town’s already dire water situation.

The announcement that the security situation had received the much-needed attention was made at a meeting between VDM

officials and the AFriForum Lou-is Trichardt branch on 14 July. Local AfriForum chairperson Wally Schultz welcomed the security upgrading. “Our new expensive pump at Albasini must be secured at all costs,” Schultz said. The pump was installed at a cost of more than R620 000 in June this year and had a positive effect on the water supply from the Albasini.

Schultz was also the one who insisted that police dockets be opened for the stolen borehole pumps.

In the meantime, five water meters were stolen in the new extension of Eltivillas on the evening of 11 July. The cost of replacing one meter is more than

R2 000. Two of the five meters were replaced immediately, while orders for spares were placed for the replacement of the other three meters. The VDM delegation, under leadership of VDM’s Makhado water super-intendent, Mr David Mukosi, showed the Limpopo Mirror some of the places where the meters were stolen or replaced, as well as a sixth meter that was removed but not reported to the municipality.

Mr Daniel Tshoteli, municipal plumber, went to open a docket on the five stolen water meters at the Makhado SAPS on 12 July. He was, however, turned away, since “the municipality cannot open a docket, only an

individual”. On 15 July, Mr Mukosi and

the Zoutpansberger accompa-nied Mr Tshoteli to the police station where the police officer on duty, a female officer with the nametag Nkumeleni, opened the docket without any problems. Lt Col Rambau, acting station commander, was asked why the docket could not be opened the previous time and to disclose the progress of the investigation on the theft cases of the borehole pumps worth R2.4million. “I am not allowed to speak to the me-dia. WO Madzhigili will be back tomorrow and he will answer all your questions,” Col Rambau told the Zoutpansberger.

On Tuesday, WO Lucas

Madzhigili was, however, still on leave and, among other things, told the Limpopo Mirror that he supposed that the municipal official had not agreed to open the docket in his own name and that the newspaper must go and look for news elsewhere. Before the case number of the stolen water pump could be given, he slammed the phone down.

The Limpopo Mirror ascer-tained from a senior police official in the province that there was no restriction on the station commander or the second in command to speak to the media. “The conduct and the progress in the cases will be investigated,” said Col Ronel Otto, provincial police spokesperson.

Vhembe to beef up security after theft of water infrastructure in Makhado area

Polina Ndalane (wearing a white jacket and raising her fist) sings the praises of Judge F Kgomo for sending Ngobeni to jail for life.

Elvis Vincent Ngobeni was jailed for life.

A 44-year-old man was sentenced to life in jail after he had stabbed his spouse 19 times with a kitchen knife and killed her at her home in Elim.

During a sitting of the circuit local division of the North Gauteng High Court held in Makhado, the court heard that a resident of Elim, Elvis Vincent Ngobeni, had murdered Laizer Nyisa Ndalane on 4 August 2011. The incident took place in full view of the deceased's nine-year-old son. Ndalane was stabbed mostly in the chest and left in a pool of blood. She was certified dead on the scene.

The court heard that Ngobeni, who had “sired the deceased's four-year-old daughter”, had killed Ndalane because he wanted to gain ownership of her property. “The lady was a woman of sub-stance, who had a business, cars and a house,” argued senior state advocate Lucas Davhana. “She had even sought a protection order against the accused, because he had assaulted her in the presence of her two small children and taken her car away without her consent.”

The accused's defence, advocate Jackson Mu-shasha, made a submission to the court, asking for some mercy when sentencing the accused, be-cause the crime was not premeditated. "He plead-ed guilty to show his remorse," said Mushasha.

Judge Kgomo, however, indicated that the ac-cused “initially pleaded guilty” because there was no choice. He ruled that the murder was planned. “This murder was not committed on the spur of the moment as the accused claims he killed the deceased in self-defence, after she had produced a kitchen knife from her black, velvet jacket,” said Kgomo.

“The conclusion is inescapable that he wanted to end her life and gain control over her property. Remorse is not something that one verbalises; one should show it through one's acts.” The court further stated that the accused had shocked even his defence when he lied that he had no knowledge of the protection order issued against him, which was made final on 7 June 2011.

Life sentence for murdering wifeand perverted murderer who has no respect for human life, particularly women and children. You had projected yourself as a kind of terrible terror that must be effectively removed from society."

The deceased's sister and guardian of the de-ceased's two children, who are four and 12, Polina Ndalane, said that she needed no financial help from the accused to raise her adopted children. “The brutal death of my sister still hurts me so much that even now when I look at the convict before this court I am not sure about what to do,” she testified.

However, after the court session, Polina said it was true that her sister would not come back, but she was satisfied with the court's judgement. “He deserves to rot in jail,” she shouted. She then sung the praises of Judge F Kgomo for sending Ngobeni to jail for life and of senior state advocate Lucas Davhana for securing a conviction and sentence.

Grieving family members want to see justice done. From left are Mr Edward Ramadi, his aunt Mrs Makwarela Ramadi, the deceased's young brother, Mr Phumudzo Ramadi, and his two children, Oritonda and Ndugelo Ramadi.

The late Israel Ramadi (37).

The death of a 37-year-old resident of Tshiheni village a fortnight ago is still having repercus-sions. During a community meeting, the resi-dents resolved to not take the law in their own hands and go after the suspect, but rather to wait for the police to investigate the matter fully.

The body of Israel Ramadi was found on Sunday morning, 7 July. The previous night, he had attend-ed a celebration function for a young girl who had returned from an initiation school. It is alleged that Israel was quarrelling with a 23-year-old man at the function, following a drinking spree.

The matter was reported to the Siloam police and a suspect was taken in for questioning. The suspect was later released and the charges were withdrawn, apparently because there was not sufficient evi-dence to link him to a crime. “We have continued with our investigations and we are investigating thoroughly,” said Siloam police spokesperson W/O Edward Tharaga.

According to some of the community members who saw Israel’s body before the police arrived at the scene, there was blood all over the deceased's face, which suggested that he had been brutally beaten and left for dead. “There were visible wounds and blood all over his face,” said one of the men who were at the scene when the police were alerted.

The Ramadi family are left with many unan-swered questions, following the death of Israel. “While we were still arranging the funeral, we heard the suspect was out. We are feeling pain, because he was released and the police didn’t tell us why they had released him,” said the late Israel’s aunt, Mrs Makwarela Ramadi.

A prominent community member, Mr Nemadzivhanani, said they were not sure whether the police were still investigating the case. He said the family was traumatised by the incident. Ad-dressing a village gathering, Mr Nemadzivhanani said people who commited crime in their village must be arrested. “In our village, we won’t tolerate

living with that individual. Jail is meant to correct him, not to kill him. People who are in jail are not dead, but they are corrected,” he said.

Another resident, Mr Nephiphidi, stood up and warned young people to distance themselves from crime and drug abuse and to always respect other people, regardless of their age or gender. He added that the community should allow the police to do their job thoroughly, "but if they fail it will force them to take the law into their hands," he warned.

The civic chairperson, Mr Tshisaise, said they would consult the police to find out how far they were with the investigations.

Israel is survived by his two children, Oritonda and Ndugelo, and his wife, Azwindini. He was laid to rest on Saturday.

Mental illness can be treated, says MEC MabasaHundreds of people participated in a mental illness campaign at the Tshilwavhusiku community hall last Wednesday.

The MEC for Health and Social De-velopment, Dr Norman Mabasa, said that they wanted to create awareness about the situation of mentally challenged persons and the people who take care of them. “Mental illness is treatable. Most people diagnosed with a serious mental illness can experience relief by actively participating in an individual treatment plan,” he added.

According to Mabasa, mental health patients need to be accepted, tak-en care of and loved by their parents, children, relatives and friends in the healing process.

He said that the role of the family and com-munities in the recovery process should be to assist patients to take medication as instructed

by health workers. It was also important to establish peer support groups and to encourage a healthy lifestyle, Mabasa said.

He also warned that his department was aware of instances where grants for disabled patients were not used for the purposes of taking care of their physical and emotional needs.

“People take those grants and buy them-selves clothes or groceries, which they do not share with the mentally disabled,” he added.

Mentally challenged people are human beings too and must be taken good care of, said Khosi Vho-Rudzani Sinthumule during the event.

“Doyen of choral music” buriedMourners at the funeral of the deceased choral music composer and conductor, Mr Shalati Joseph Khosa, hailed him as one of the most productive South African composers ever.

Khosa (77) died at Phalaborwa MediClinic on 3 July and was buried at Mabayeni cemetery in Malamule-le on Saturday. The funeral service was characterised by the playing of his music.

Prof George Mugovhani, a lectur-er in music research at the Tshwane University of Technology, told mourners that Khosa had composed the highest number of musical piec-es of any composer in South Africa. “As a music researcher, I have not come across anybody with such a variety of pieces as SJ,” he said.

“Each musical piece had its own theme and he was a keen watcher of nature,” said Mugovhani.

Businessman Reuel Khoza said that Khosa was his “father by choice” and mentioned that they

had met in 1965 and he was hooked on the man because of his love for music.

Khosa’s daughter, Happy, the wife of Bishop Elijah Mtileni of Bethesda Church in Malamulele, said her father had lived for music and that was why family members could sing some of his compositions in the service without even rehears-ing them.

Other speakers included former Limpopo MEC for sports arts and culture Joyce Mashamba, Mz-wandile Methews, chairman of the South African Choral Music Asso-ciation, and Capson Kabi, a former Police Choral Music Association chairman. “He walked with rhythm and was always happy,” said Kabi.

One of the features of the funeral was a rendition of one Khosa’s compositions by the Malamulele Evangelical Presbyterian Church Choir, led by Peter Mageza and the Greater Phalaborwa SAPS cluster choir.

Pallbearers carry the casket of Khosa to his final resting place.

Child-headed families a cause of concernThe Shalom Baptist Church at Tshikota recently received visitors from Texas in the USA and also from neighbouring Polokwane, who all came to ac-company the church in an out-reach programme in Tshikota.

Pastor Philemon Mashau said that the team had a door-to-door visit in the houses where they accessed the challenges faced by the residents. people of Tshikota. “Our main purpose was to find out the challenges, so that we may find ways to help the residents where we can,” said Mashau.

The team established that there are many fam-ilies headed by children who sometimes sleep on empty stomachs. The church has so far opened a centre for boys between the ages of five and 18, to try to minimise the problem where youths, partic-ularly boys, are found roaming the streets and scavenging inside the rubbish containers in town.

“As the church, we are ready to meet the needs of the commu-nity,” said Mashau. “People must remember that the church has always had a vital role to play in combating social ills such as hun-ger, discrimination and more.”

Mashau said that one of the biggest challenges in Tshikota was the continuous lack of water. “We are busy planning to arrange for a borehole for the community of Tshikota in the near future,” added Mashau.

On 20 June, the team distrib-uted food parcels to at least 20 child-headed families during an event held at Tshikota Commu-nity Hall.

Brad Hixiom, who headed the team from Fannin Terrace Bap-tist Church at Midland in Texas, USA, said that the condition of child-headed families in Tshikota had touched them deeply. “This picture will remain in our minds for a long time,” he added. The team from Texas visited the Shalom Baptist Church in Tshikota. More power outages imminent“Power outages are imminent in future,” said the Makhado Municipality after struggling through last Sunday night (7/7) to restore the power supply to parts of Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

On Sunday, a massive power out-age affected the greater part of town. By late Sunday afternoon, some parts of town had their power supply restored, while others stayed in the dark until early Monday morning.

But what caused the weekend’s power outage?

According to the municipality, a 22kV indoor circuit breaker panel in the Stubbs Street substation failed at about 11:30 on Sunday, due to insulation fatigue. The fault tripped out the industrial and central lines on two occasions, which then had to be restored.

“This fault in Stubbs Street caused extensive damage to the 22kV cir-cuit breaker, as well as the entire metering and protection circuitry of the panel, and the whole 10MVA substation had to be taken out of commission. Another circuit breaker was installed on the 8th and will be commissioned and put back in ser-vice by the 9th, when the substation will be energised and loaded,” said the municipality.

They further explained that the Stubbs Street substation is a firm 5 MVA.

“At the moment, it runs near to full non-firm capacity of 10MVA. It is therefore fully loaded and one of the most important in-feed points to Extension 1, Extension 2, and the central business district (CBD). The 22kV switchgear failed many times over the years and has now been replaced. The 11kV switch gear is in fairly good condition.”

After a dark Sunday, nearly all residents had electricity supply by 07:00 on Monday when the elec-tricity feed came from different substations, and by Tuesday the electricity supply to the whole town

was expected to be normal. A major challenge, however, is

that the capacity of the transformers and the cables feeding power to the different feeders is inadequate and should be upgraded to accommodate the growth in development.

On learning that the Stubbs Street substation failure was responsible for the outage, the Limpopo Mirror enquired about the condition of all the substations in town.

The municipality explained that the town has seven secondary sub-stations, of which two are known as outdoor substations and five as indoor substations.

The danger lies with the five indoor ones.

“The five secondary indoor sub-stations in town need urgent replace-ment of their switchgear as they came to the end of their effective lifespan long ago. These substations were installed in the early 1980s. The current status is that they are aged,” said the municipality and added that the spares, repairs and replacement of these substations were an absolute must.

“The budget is not making pro-vision for any substation as the amount is just too high. Applications are currently being launched with financial institutions in order to ob-tain funding for these projects,” the municipality told the this newspaper in April this year. At that stage, it was stated that a total collapse of the entire network was not likely, “due to the fact that we have seven intake points at different places ... What can happen is that very long delays in restoring power failures may occur, due to a lack of adequate resources to attend to urgent emergencies.”

The dark side of the story is that power outages are now looming. “It may be due to the national Eskom generation capacity constraints, or locally, when a fault may occur anytime, anywhere,” the munici-pality said.

Extraordinary creation by young rural inventorGood things are always thought to orig-inate in big cities and towns.

Bob Dombo (21) of Hamangilasi in the Vuwani area has proven, however, that ordinary citizens in rural areas are capable of extraordinary and innovative inventions. He is a motor body mechanic at Professional FET College in Thohoy-andou and has built a motor-propelled boat that can accommodate four people.

The boat was made of fibre glass, with a lawnmower engine, windscreens made of ordinary plastic, plastic chairs and a pulley. It can reach a speed of up to 100km per hour and was unveiled and tested at Nandoni Dam last weekend.

“I always had an interest in inventing things, but due to the locality where I was born and financial con-straints, I could not real-ise my potential. When I came to Professional FET, I knew I was at the right place where

I could unleash my full potential,” said Dombo. He said he had big dreams and he and his friends were planning to build a big boat with facilities that the community could use for meetings and other functions in the water. “It took only a week to build this one and I am now planning a big one. With the help of my fellow students, the

dream could become a reality,” he said. The college director where Dombo is

studying, Mr Frederrick Silima, is very impressed. “This is skills development and what we want from our students - to be innovative and to use their education to invent things that can be of use to the community.”

Univen students to benefit from agreementStudents from the University of Venda (Univen) and of the Free State (UFS) stand to benefit from a mutual agreement re-cently signed between the two institutions.

The ceremony took place at the QwaQwa Campus of the UFS. The event was part of the UFS’s 10-year celebration of a multi-campus system.

Among the guests were the chancellor of UFS, Dr Khotso Mokhele, the chairperson of its council, Judge Ian van der Mer-we, its vice-chancellor and prin-cipal, Prof Jonathan Jansen, and its vice-rector external relations, Dr Choice Makhetha.

The University of Venda’s delegation consisted of Prof Peter Mbati, the vice-chancellor

and principal, and the directors responsible for communications and marketing and international relations, Takalani Dzaga and Cornelius Hagenmeier.

The memorandum of under-standing is intended to entrench the collaboration between the two universities further.

They plan to implement stu-dent and staff exchanges and intensify cooperative initiatives already underway in various fields. Presently, active collab-orative activities are already im-plemented in, among other fields, student affairs and community engagement.

As the campus principal of the QwaQwa campus at the time of its incorporation into the UFS, Prof Mbati was invited to reflect

on this period in the history of the campus. He highlighted the achievements and challenges of the campus in this period and presented a slideshow to illustrate the incorporation pro-cess from the perspective of the management team of the campus at the time.

He illustrated how the team oversaw infrastructure improve-ments and alignment of gov-ernance structures as well as academic programmes with the main campus while negotiating the difficult trajectory caused by emotions aroused by the incor-poration.

Mbati was hailed as having played a leading role in the advancement of the QwaQwa Campus of the UFS.

Solar panels bring electricity to several Makhado villagesAn ambitious project to provide rural villages with electricity by using solar panels is starting to materialise. Residents who stay in the villages of Ha-Matsa, Maname Paradise, Manyii, Tshikuwi and Mamvuka now boast with lights powered by the newly installed solar panels.

The project was initiated last year by the Solar Vision company, in association with the Makhado Mu-nicipality. Most households in these villages had been without electricity for many years.

According to Mrs Molobowe Ma-thalise, one of the residents who had a solar panel installed at her house, the project reduces the threat of house-breakings. “When there is light during the night, thieves are afraid to break into our houses, fearing that they will be caught,” she said. She added that

the solar panels had improved her life. “I don’t buy candles anymore - they are expensive and they don’t last long,” she said.

Mrs Mathalise thanked the local councillor of Ward 36, Cllr Mbu-laheni Magada, for implementing the project in their village. “Since we started staying here, this is the only councillor who has helped us. It has never happened until now,” she added.

According to Cllr Magada, the project started last year and ap-proximately 112 solar panels were installed. He advised residents in the area who don’t have electricity to apply for solar panels. The initial payment is R128, with a monthly premium of R68. The municipality subsidises R40 of this premium and the residents only have to pay R28 a month.

“We want better service”

Lions kill 19 head of cattle

“We expect better services to our communities and nothing else. We want the new councillor to report back to the communities who vot-ed him into office, whether there is success or challenges affecting them,” said Cllr Josephine Muk-wevho, mayor of the Mutale Local Municipality.

She welcomed the new coun-cillor of Ward 4, Mr Thinawanga Pandelani, during the swearing-in ceremony held at the Mutale council chamber last Thursday. Mukwevho added that the municipality was in

the process of appointing contrac-tors to rebuild roads and bridges damaged by heavy rains earlier this year. “We want the new councillor to fast-track better services to the poor communities and those most affected by the floods,” she added.

In response, Pandelani promised to work around the clock to change the lives of the residents of his ward for the better. “Working for the com-munities has been part of my life, even when I was still unemployed, as I volunteered working for com-munities,” he added.

Lions that allegedly strayed from the Kruger National Park have killed 19 cattle in Tshikwalakwala village outside Beit Bridge since the beginning of the month.

The local ward councillor, Mr Enock Ndou, told Limpopo Mirror that the lions were mainly targeting cattle grazing in the bush. “This is really an issue of grave concern as local villagers rely on cattle farming for a living,” he said.

Ndou urged the local relevant au-thorities to address this problem as a matter of urgency.

Mr Samson Chauke, one of the af-fected villagers, said he had lost three cattle after they had been attacked by

the lions. “The lions have killed three cattle

from my kraal and this really wor-rying us as villagers because the relevant authorities know about it but they are not doing anything to address the problem.”

Ndou said they would soon engage a local safari operator to hunt down the lions. The problem of lions is not new to the local villagers as they continue to endure the pain of losing their animals.

Tshikwalakwala village is situated at the confluence of the Limpopo and Bubi River and lies along Zim-babwe’s borders with Mozambique and South Africa.

Outgoing caretaker councillor Mr Sampson Madume (right) handed over valuable documents to incoming councillor Mr Thinawanga Pandelani. The mayor, Cllr Josephine Mukwevho (left), looked on.

Classes resume at Khogonyane Primaryof Khogonyane Primary resumed their classes on Monday. The turnabout came after the De-partment of Education had delivered 10 mobile classes at the school last week.

The schooling calendar was disrupted as the pupils had also abandoned writing their mid-year examinations.

The chairperson of the school governing body, Mr Tshimangadzo Kutama, said the community of Tshikwarani was happy with MEC Dickson Masemola’s temporary solution of providing mo-bile classes. He said it was a pity that Masemola had provided mobile classrooms after the school calendar had been disturbed by the protests.

“We are going to support the teachers with extra classes, so that our children will catch up the time lost. Our kids can’t learn in mobile classes forev-er. I hope that they will start to build permanent classrooms before the end of the year,” he said.

One of the parents, Ms Josphine Matotoka, said she was happy that the MEC had listened to the community at last and come up with a temporary solution.

Vhembe delivers water to dry hospitalHardly 20 days after he prom-ised to deliver water to Donald Frazer Hospital, the executive mayor of Vhembe, Cllr Tsh-itereke Matibe, has lived up to his promise by providing a borehole to the hospital.

Matibe made the bold prom-ise on 26 June to the then acting chief executive officer of the hospital, Mr Nditsheni Mathule, who indicated that they were struggling to run the hospital because of the inconsistent supply of water.

Mathule told Matibe about the serious shortage of water during a summit presentation at the hospital. “Nurses are some-times forced to come to work with water in buckets in order

to help the hospital running. This affects our service to the pa-tients, as the process of using water from the buckets makes ev-erything run slowly. It is more frustrating as we cannot use the theatre without run-ning water,” Mathule said then.

With the help of three businesspeople, Mr Percy Sambo of Bukuta Solidarity, Mr Velaphi Nemafhoho-ni of Vhembe Water Drilling and Immorial Building Construction and Mr Livhuwani

Phophi of TLM Engineering Services and Mushavo Trading Enterprise, the Vhembe District Municipality is going to provide a consistent supply of water to the hospital before the end of July.

A borehole was drilled on Monday morning after a sod turning, which was conducted by Matibe, Thulamela Mayor Grace Mahosi, Chief Mphi-galale and the CEO of the hos-pital, Mr Richard Mufamadi.

Nemafhohoni said: “This wa-ter will be available on Tuesday, July 16, but we must first send a sample to the laboratory in Pre-toria where they will check the quality of the water. As there are no mines in this area, the process

of sending a water sample is just a formality as we are positive that there is no contamination in the water,” he added.

Matibe said he was happy that they the municipality had delivered on its promise in re-cord time. He hailed Cllr Lucy Mulaudzi, whom he tasked get a solution for the water shortage at the hospital.

“I am very impressed with the pace at which Mulaudzi responded to the task given to her. If all of the councillors and officials take their jobs as seriously as Mulaudzi, our people will not complain about service delivery in this district,” said Matibe.

He also paid homage to the three sponsors.

Hilda ‘Iron Lady’ Mugwedi (right) enjoys being the only female soccer referee in Musina. Photo: Wilson Dzebu.

Meet the only female soccer referee in the border town of Musina. Hilda ‘Iron Lady’ Mugwedi (30) has been the centre of attraction to sports lovers whenever she officiates at soccer matches.

Since she seriously took up soccer refereeing two years ago, she has officiated at more than 100 soccer games, including local leagues and competitions. She is now one of the trusted referees of the Musina Local Football Association and the Castle Soccer League.

Herself a gifted soccer player, Hilda also alternates between her roles as referee and as coach for old ladies soccer team the Musina Gogo Getters. As a sin-gle parent of three children and an active member of the Musina Sports Council, Hilda does not have time to rest, due to her tight schedule.

“I started playing ladies soc-cer for the local ladies soccer team, Bongi Stars, in 2008. Being a 'dribbling wizard' by then, people enjoyed seeing me scoring goals. My dream was short lived when the owner and sole sponsor of the team, Bongi Madima, died three years ago. We did not manage to get any sponsors and the team ceased to exist.”

Dubbed Iron Lady by soc-cer lovers because of her firm decisions on the soccer pitch, Hilda says that after the end of Bongi Stars, she decided to do something about her soccer talent. “I did not want to stay idle and I trained on my own to make sure that I’m always fit. I got involved in several sporting codes, but soccer remained in my blood.

I kept on watching soccer matches, because I knew that

one day I would get a chance to display my talent.”

She said her dream came true when she heard that the local soccer league needed candi-dates to become referees two years ago. “I took the bull by the horns and told myself that it was the correct time to realise my potential.

Being the only lady among the six trainees made me feel so proud, and I completed the training without any difficulty.”

She says she is happy that men do not look down upon her when she is in control of the games. “I make sure that I adhere to all the rules and this makes me respectable on the soccer pitch. The fact that I’m a woman has nothing to do with my authority on the pitch and I’m proud that I have never been assaulted throughout my career.”

Phodzo Managa of Liverpool jumps to intercept the ball from Fhatuwani Rambani.

Muhuyu XI Experience were too strong for Thenzheni Liver-pool when they beat them 4-2 in a Munyamela Electrical match at Muhuyu on Saturday.

The game started at a blistering pace, with the home side being superior as far as ball posses-

sion was concerned. Rolivhuwa Nevhutalu was trapped by the opponents' keeper, Aifheli Sikhu-mo, in the box in the 15th minute, forcing the referee to award a penalty to Liverpool. Rotondwa Managa opened the Liverpool account from the spot.

Experience changed their orig-inal pattern and started to initiate moves from behind. They did not reap anything from their effort, as it was not easy to find the way through the defence of their opponents. The home team equalised through Fhatuwani

Rambani in the 26th minute.

E x p e r i e n c e w a s awarded a place kick in the 38th minute. Walter Munzhedzi picked the ball from the place kick to score easily. Nduvho Ravhura then beat three defenders and dished a square pass to Pfano Ndivhudzannyi , who gave it the final touch. Experience were lead-ing 3-2 at half time.

Early in the second half, Ipfi Ramalibana scored Liverpool’s sec-ond goal. He unleashed a powerful volley from the 25m area and the keeper could not save it. Ndivhuwo Nengovhe-la scored Experience’s fourth goal shortly be-fore the final whistle.

Andrew the key to Benny’s successThe promising Andrew Kabota has been identified as a key to the success of Benny's Care Soccer Academy this year.

Midfielder Kabota grew up watching his father, Andrew “Ace” Kabota, playing for Black Leopards. Ace was a well-known player in Limpopo. “As a child, I wanted to be a dancer,” said Kabota, “but my father didn’t approve of that, and I didn’t want to disappoint him. I still like dancing, listening to house music and playing tennis, but soccer became my first love.”

Andrew is 18 years old, and in Grade 12.

This is his second year playing in the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup competition and he describes it as a great experience.

“It gives us an opportunity to be exposed to people from professional teams that can po-tentially sign us on.”

He believes the team has a good chance of going further in the competition this year. “Last year, there was little communi-cation in the team, and we had no respect for each other. We have definitely improved since then,” he said.

Andrew is currently also play-

ing for Musina United FC.Looking at the future, Andrew

sees himself playing for one of the teams in the PSL.

He is doing well in mathe-matics at school and wants to study auditing when he leaves school. If he has to identify with

one player whom he regards as a soccer legend, it would be former Kaizer Chiefs star Doctor Khum-alo. “He is currently the head coach for the under 17 Kaizer Chiefs team and he gives back to the development of soccer in this country,” Andrew said.

Last week´s rainy weather in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) gave some a reason to dress up. These two twins, Mikateko and Tinyiko Mathebula (5), were photographed while their mom visited the offices of the Zoutpansberger and the Limpopo Mirror last Thursday.

Makwarani Frelimo Boys aim to qualify for the second stage of the Munyamela Elec-trician KO, when they meet the unpredictable Mbahela Vikings at the Muhuyu grounds on Saturday.

The other fixtures are: Damani Powerline vs Thenzheni Liverpool, Muhuyu XI Experience vs Maraxwe Home Boys and Muhuyu Cop-per Stars vs Matangari United.

Sunday's matches are: Tshipako Hot Spurs vs Mianzwi Tswingoni at 9:00; Vhutalu Mountain Rangers vs Matangari Rising Stars at 11:00 and Matangari Settlers vs Tshiombo Try Again at 13:00.

Pupils from Mamathiliedzha Primary School received soccer balls, bags and pencils from Build It Hardware Thohoyandou, during a cer-emony at the premises of the store on Saturday.

“We want to unearth the talents of the pupils and we are also heeding the call from the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Mr Fikile Mbalula, who urged the schools in the country to take sports seriously," said the school principal, Mr Mmbagiseni Nengwenani.

“It is our aim to produce good soccer players,” he said.

Mr Kegan Speirs, the owner of Build It Tho-hoyandou, said the company had social respon-sibilities, and to promote education and sport among the pupils are part of their responsibility.

“We have already donated some soccer balls and toys to several schools around Thohoyandou. We are also organising an U/13 tournament in conjunction with the South African Football Association, which will be held in Thohoyandou later this year,” said Speirs.

Photographed during the presentation are, from left to right, Ms Kim Speirs, Mr Kegan Speirs, Mr Mmbangiseni Nengwenani, principal of Mamathiliedzha Primary, and Mr Lucas Nengwenani, a general worker at Build It in Thohoyandou.

Tshilulu Mighty Mangos will not participate in the semifinal stage of the Mulindavhathu Soccer Challenge.

They were booted out of the prestigious competition by Tshibvumo Young Stars 4-2 at the Khubvi Benjies grounds on Saturday.

As if they were going to teach Young Stars a soccer lesson, Mighty Mangos opened their

account seven minutes into the game. Hulisani Netshiomwani blasted in a rocket after a re-bound.

Young Stars, howev-er, did not panic. They continued to play like a unit, creating dangerous passes from behind and making things difficult for the opponents. Stars retaliated in the 20th minute. Pfunzo Tshikot-shi went loose from the left flank and unleashed a half-volley too hot for the Mangos keeper, Emmanuel Mbedzi, to handle.

Young Stars took the

lead moments thereafter. Mut-shidzi Tshilande was on target, following a neat pass by Elijah Netili. Mangos regrouped from behind in their search for the equaliser. Their efforts paid off when Hulisani Netshiomvani hooked in a loose ball after a scramble within the box.

Mangos did not have enough time to celebrate their goal. Their celebrations were cut short as

Stars took the lead again in the 39th minute. Pfunzo Tshikotshi beat the keeper with a ground cutter to bring the half-time score to 3-2. Meshack Ramafamba scored the fourth goal for Stars in the 78th minute with a header. Mangos were awarded a penalty four minutes before the final whistle. Thihanedzwi Mbedzi caused an upset by shooting wide from the penalty spot.

Businessman Johnny Khubana never tires of innovative ways and ideas of bringing entertain-ment to the people.

Khubana, of JTK Promotions, is known as a music promoter, but has been showing a keen in-terest of late in developing sport. He is now promoting Musangwe or bare-knuckle fistfighting, which has been very popular in the Venda area for many years.

In an attempt to promote this ancient sport, which has been used as a pastime and to groom boys to be men during the herd-ing of livestock, he staged a tournament at the weekend. The tournament, which drew fighters and enthusiasts from far-flung villages in Venda, took place at the newly opened Mahlamband-lopfu Entertainment Centre at

Makumeke in the Malamulele area. Those who attended never had a dull moment as fighters bat-tled it out for honours in 46 fights, and a new champion was also crowned during the tournament.

Khubana said he wanted to take the sport to another lev-el. "Bare-knuckle fighting was perceived as the domain of the Vhavenda. For the first time we have brought it to Makumeke, so as to mix the Vhavenda and Vatsonga. This is a catalyst for unity between the two tribes who used to stay together, but were divided among ethnic lines by the apartheid government. As you can see, many local people came and participated and we spent the whole day interacting and building relationships," he said.

Khubana said the sport was

also a way of taking the youth from the streets as there was never a dull moment during the fights. “Schools are closed and boredom breeds ill thinking, which could drive our youth into bad things that could destroy their future. After participating in this sport, one goes home tired and does not have time to do wrong things," he said.

Mr Patrick Ramaraga, who is the president of the sport, said he was excited about the outcome of the tournament. "This is our first tournament here and we did not anticipate such an attendance, but what we see here today is very encouraging. We are doing this with venues rotating and the attendance here means there is a bright future for the sport in this area," he said.

Vho-Mahada. Photo supplied.

Back with a bangAfter disappearing from music circles for two solid years, a resident of Khubvi Tshiseluselu village, Azwinndini Mahada, has made a come-back with his third album.

The new release, Tshelede yo lovha, was record-ed at the Mudzimba Recording Studio three months ago and released three weeks ago.

Packed with 10 Venda traditional songs, the new release is selling well, despite the fact that it is self-marketed. Some of the songs which have the potential of making the album a hit include Zwo mmbavha, Ro hula u tambula, Kha vha zwi litshe and Tshelede.

The album will soon be available at local music outlets.

He revealed that he started playing a home-made guitar way back in 1982. His love of music grew over time until he met the late Venda music leg-end, Nndanganeni Daniel Luambo. Unfortunately, Luambo passed on before he could introduce Vho-Mahada to the recording studio. That was a huge setback to Vho-Mahada as he only managed to make a breakthrough 18 years later.

In 2010, he released his debut album, Vhure-reli. “My debut album did not perform according to my expectations,” he said. The following

year, he went to the Mudzimba Recording Studio and his second album, Muvhango, was released towards the end of 2011. According to him, the demand for Muvhango was by far higher than he could supply. It was probably for the same reason that Muvhango was named the album of the week in the Phalaphala FM Venda music charts.

Vho-Mahada prac-tices as a traditional healer when he is not performing.

Fhatuwani Nemusumani of Peace Makers controls the ball, while Tinyiko Manganye of Darkies is on his heels.

By Frank Mavhungu

Hard-earned victory for Peace MakersKhubvi Peace Makers fought hard to earn a 5-4 victory at the expense of Khubvi Danger-ous Darkies in their quarterfinal match in the Mulindavhathu Soccer Challenge at the Khubvi Benjies grounds on Sunday.

Peace Makers suffered a setback three minutes into the game. Their natural goal scorer, Ipfi Muthubi, sustained an injury to his ankle and was replaced with Munei Mabidi. The keeper of Peace Makers, Rudzani Mbengeni, denied Darkies what everyone thought was a sure goal. He abandoned his position and advanced out of the box to block Rofhiwa Netshitungulu’s way.

The referee, Mr Rabelani Nemushungwa, was lenient enough to let Lufuno Singo of Peace Makers go away with a verbal warning in the 19th minute. Singo tackled Tsiko Tshivhase from behind.

Thembuluwo Tsilatsila of Peace Makers nearly found the net towards the end of the first half. He held onto the ball for far too long within the penalty area, until he lost possession. Thompho Mphu-ladzila of Dangerous Darkies was the first player to be booked. His sin was obstructing Fhatuwani Nemusumani.

The winner was determined through a penalty shoot-out, following a full-time goalless draw. Peace Makers converted all five their chances via Avhatakali Tshavhungwe, Mukhethwa Ramakho-misa, Thembuluwo Tsialtsila, Phindulo Motsoare and Lufuno Singo, while Dangerous Darkies man-aged to score with four of their chances.

Muvhulawa Rambuda of United passes his opponent, Moloto Matumba.

Muraleni United Brothers paved their way to the SAB Safa Vhembe league when they hammered Muduluni Young Chiefs 8-0 in a Limpopo Dairy league match at the Muduluni grounds on Sunday.

Madambi Ramovha of the home team was the first player to go into the referee’s book. He tackled Phathutshedzo Livhalani the rough way in the eighth minute. Ronewa Muthambi of United opened the score, when he easily beat the keeper in the 13th minute.

Two minutes later, Dakalo Tangananalo received a pass from Khumbelo Rakhavha and sent the ball to Melton Nembidzane. His ground cutter hit the goal post and crossed the goal line.

Dakalo Tanganana-lo was on target three minutes later. Matome Makgopo dished a beau-tiful pass to Azwitamisi

Mphephu, who gave the ball the final touch.

United enjoyed their 3-0 lead until the end of the first half. Tsumbedzo Mulaudzi scored his team’s fourth goal when he finished off a square ball from Melton Rakhavha.

United went further ahead when Azwitamisi Mphephu un-leashed a powerful volley after a

scramble for the ball within the box in the 60th minute.

Azwitamisi Mphephu com-pleted his hat trick in the 68th minute.

Phathutshedzo Livhalani cap-italised on a clearing error by Chiefs and caught their keeper, Madambi Ramovha, off guard.

The last goal of the day was scored by Dakalo Tangananalo.

Farisani Maginya of Stone Breakers leaves the pitch after seeing red.

One of the favourites in the Mulin-davhathu Soccer Challenge, Maho-loni Stone Breakers, still cannot be-lieve that they will not take part in the next stages of the competition.

They unexpectedly lost 1-2 to Vhu-fuli Pull Together in their quarterfinal match at the Khubvi Benjies grounds on Saturday.

The game was characterised by wasted scoring opportunities. Pull Together were the first to regret. Their overlapping midfielder, Gundo Mu-rathi, received a beautiful pass from Khuliso Muronga and fumbled at the goal finish. Instead of chipping the ball and trying other possible ways, Murathi chose to try his luck from the edge of the box. His volley missed the goal mouth by inches.

Stone Breakers threatened to score in the 14th minute when Farisani Maginya lost possession within the

penalty box. At that stage, the keeper of Pull Together, Ailwei Radali, was already beaten. Pull Together took the lead in the 24th minute, when Humbulani Ndiazwa deflected the ball into the net after a corner kick that was taken by Mpho Ramugondo.

Breakers fought back five minutes later. Their left flank, Asivhanga Maginya, blasted in a ground cutter from inside the box. The score was 1-1 at half time, despite numerous scoring attempts by both sides.

Breakers lost shape in the middle of the park shortly after they were reduced to 10 men. Their central midfielder, Farisani Maginya, was given his marching orders, following a tackle from behind on Gundo Mu-rathi. Elekanyani Nkhumeleni scored the winning goal for Pull Together in the 84th minute.

Ngwenani Manchester United booked a place in the semifi nal of the Mulin-davhathu Soccer Challenge by beating Tshiseluselu Green Mambas 2-1 at the Khubvi Benjies grounds on Sunday.

The game was a see-saw battle, despite the fact that Green Mambas are cam-paigning in the lower division. It took Manchester United only five minutes to stamp their author-ity on the game. Their overlapping midfi elder, Ronewa Tshivhase, cap-italized on a defensive error by Mambas and blasted in a rocket from close range. The keeper of Green Mambas, Rus-sel Munyai, watched helplessly as the ball hit the back of the net.

Green Mambas did not stop fi ghting, despite conceding the goal. They were awarded a free kick which ended in a goal nine minutes lat-er. Aluwani Manenzhe gave the ball the fi nal touch after a scramble within the penalty area.

The Mambas’ goal was an insult to the players of Manchester United. They created a number of clear chanc-es, but their strikers caused numerous upsets by fumbling at the goal fi nish. Manchester Unit-

ed reclaimed their leadership in the 29th minute. Their speedy forward, Ndaedzo Nemakononi, was brought down within the box. Referee Calvin Nemavhola awarded a penalty and the Rastafarian striker, Kanakana Rasivhetshele, made no mistake from the white spot.

Green Mambas missed a for-tune towards the end of the fi rst

half. They were also awarded a penalty after Aluwani Manenzhe was unlawfully tackled within the box. Kholwani Nema-nashi caused an upset by shooting wide. Ndinannyi Netshitungulu of Manchester United was reprimanded with a card for wasting time late in the game.
