FROM THE RECTOR 18 May 2014 Dear Friends, Which of us does not keep in the depth of our heart a nostalgic longing for a home, a haven of peace and rest, a place where we can recover from life’s storms? Jesus was aware of this human

longing. In preparing his disciples for his departure, he tells them he is going ahead in order to prepare a dwelling-place for them at their journey’s end. How strange are his expressions: ‘I am the way’; ‘I am the gate’ (Jn 10:7), spoken in anticipation of the Easter experience with the purpose of lighting up its deep significance. PARISH NEWS Baptism: We welcome Lachlan Miller into the family of the Church through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism at the 10:00am Family Eucharist today. Please pray for Lachlan and his parents and godparents, as they rejoice in sharing with us the Christian faith. Music notes for today’s Family Eucharist: At the Family Eucharist this morning the choir will sing a plainsong setting of the mass, An English Eucharist. The communion motet is the plainsong antiphon, Salve Regina, a Marian Hymn traditionally sung from Trinity Sunday until Advent. Its text is usually translated as "Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, hail our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears". The voluntary is by the contemporary-Canadian composer, Denis Bedard, and comes from his Liturgical Suite, which includes music for all sections of the mass. This joyful toccata is known as Sortie.

Mothers’ Union (MU): The next meeting is on Wednesday 21 May following the 10:00am Eucharist and a cuppa, for lunch at Dee Why RSL. All Welcome! For information, please speak with Deacon Sandra or Margaret Winters.

Pins’n’Needles: will hold a stall to sell handmade goods after both the 8:00am and 10:00am Services on Sunday 25 May in support of the organ fund. All are welcome to come to the group’s regular meetings on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month (at 9:30am-12:30pm).

Cottage Counselling operates regularly in the Parish Centre with support from St John’s. Please pray for the service, the counsellors and their resources, giving thanks for their work, and that this important ministry may continue meeting the needs of the local community. Cottage Counselling now has Deductible Gift Recipient status with the ATO and can provide receipts for tax deduction purposes to donors. FAMSING: On Sunday 25 May at 2:00pm, FAMSING, a choral offshoot of FAMS Theatre Co presents a concert of opera and music theatre at St John’s. Also featuring pianist Tim Swales playing Schumann, and some teasing tidbits from FAMS’ production of ‘The Yeomen of the Guard’. Donations are invited to support FAMS. Guringai Festival: Members of the Northern Beaches Aboriginal Community invite all to join them on Friday 30 May (6:30pm for 7:00pm) at Saint Anthony in the Fields Church, 46 Myoora Road, Terrey Hills for dinner and conversation, and to hear from Richard Campbell, well-known Aboriginal Artist from Bowraville who works with the connection of Dreamtime stories and spirituality. Richard’s work was used in the canonisation ceremony for St Mary of the Cross Mackillop. Please see the notice in the lobby; bookings essential by Tuesday 20 May.

Street Mission Wednesday Night Café: Street Mission operates cafes in Sydney’s northern beaches region, serving over 300 meals each month using a 100% volunteer workforce. Many of their clients who include adults and their children, have medical issues and life is tough for them. The St John’s Street Mission Café is open on Wednesday nights, providing a nutritious meal (eg chicken curry and rice, fresh vegetables and dessert) and a supportive atmosphere. As we continue to pray for this work, if you wish to consider being trained and rostered to volunteer, please leave your name and contact details with the office to be passed on to Street Mission. It is necessary that volunteers help on a rostered basis, receive induction training, give undertakings concerning confidentiality, privacy and child protection, obtain references and be willing to have a police check if required.

Red Cross Blood Service: One in three Australians will need blood, but only one in thirty donates. Donated blood helps cancer patients, people with blood disorders, mothers-to-be and newborn babies, as well as trauma and surgical patients. The Mobile Blood Service is at Dee Why Surf Club this week, (19-22 May, 12:30-7:00pm Mon-Tue, 9:30am-4:00pm Wed-Thu). Please see the notice board in the lobby. To donate, book a time on 13 14 95,
