Houston Death Overshadows Grammys
The 2011 Grammy Awards Ceremony held last night in New York was overshadowed by the sudden death of singer Whitney Houston. The American artist, famous for songs such as How Will I Know and I Will Always Love You was found dead in her hotel room on Sunday aged just 48. LL Cool J, the host of the Award Ceremony, started the evening with a prayer for Whitney Houston and Jenifer Hudson sang Houston’s most famous song – I Will Always Love You in tribute to the actress.
The 64th Grammy Award Ceremony was a great night for American singer Adele and German rock group Foo Fighters. Adele won six awards, including Best Record, Best Song and Best Album of the Year. Last year was a remarkable year for the 23-year-old singer whose album “21” sold 17 million copies world-wide. Foo Fighters the band formed in 1994 by Dave Grohl won five awards including Best Rock Album and Best Rock Song.
In total the 54th Grammy Awards Ceremony handed-out 178 Awards including one for former Beatle Paul McCartney. His 1973 album, Band on the Run won the “Best Historical Album” award, McCartney’s 25th Grammy prize. Although McCartney is still 16 Grammy Awards behind Georg Solti who holds the record for most wins with 31.
Other award winners included Kanye West who won four Grammy Awards, including Best Rap Song and Best Rap Award. British singer Amy Winehouse, who died in July 2011, won the Best Pop Duo/Group award for her performance of Body & Soul with legendry American singer Tom Bennett.
