Potentate’s Message

ROCKY McWILLIAMSWhat a great turn out of units, clubs and

Nobles for our kickoff parade for the season. It was cold, windy and cloudy. Yet still, you showed up with smiles and ready to parade. The Delano District and their crowd really love the Shriners!

Many thanks go out to all the Nobles and their Ladies who helped with the Wichita Run event early in the morning of Saturday, March 11. Thank you, Nobles and Ladies, for willingly getting up so early on a Saturday, to brave the cold and windy weather, to make our presence in the community visible. We can volunteer for events like this to help get our name out in the public. This particular event has a ‘double bang for the buck’ as we earn money for the Plane of Mercy and the public sees us at work!

Noble Mark Butterfield and Lady Cynda Wright, what a super St. Patrick’s Day Party! You and your teams planned a fantastic day for Midian Shrine. Everything was great; the food, the decorations and games! Thank you for an outstanding event.

Nobles, my message this year is to inform the public of who we are and what we do as Shriners. The parades are our first and most powerful image of Shrinedom. I personally love to parade and this year it’s hoped Midian Shrine will show up in force to impress upon the masses how much fun it is to be a Shriner.

I really appreciate the volunteers at Midian. You know who you are and you know all that you do. Those little things, like picking up trash in the courtyard as you enter, cleaning up after a unit meeting, helping to carry items, holding the door for others and even listening attentively during meetings. These things are much appreciated. And many of you, spend energy, time and $$ to help with our Circus, the Sportsman’s Event and the FEZtival of Trees. Your efforts are noticed and appreciated. You are a great bunch of people. Maybe, unjustly, I feel a real sense of pride knowing I’m part of this fantastic group. Keep up the good work!

Lady Michelle, along with the executive aides and their teams. Those same people are working on the Children’s Easter Egg Hunt for Saturday, April 15, at Orchard Park. They’re planning another great event!

Circus, Circus, Circus! It’s April 21-23 at the Intrust Arena. John Auch and Greg Stobart have been working tirelessly to make this the best circus ever. Please plan to come help beginning with the work night on Thursday, April 20, and help out during the three-day event.

How’s your “elevator speech” coming along? You know, the two-minute “talk” telling others about why you’re a Shriner and why others should join our fraternity. Please keep this in mind as you meet new people or talk with your friends. Be confident. Just talk about what we do and why you’re involved. And don’t forget to ask if they would like more information on how to join. I feel it’s that personal contact that will make a big

SHRINE HISTORY LESSON #2Walter Fleming created the ritual, emblems and costumes of the Shri-ners. Bill Florence and Fleming were initiated August 13, 1870, and then initiated eleven other men on June 16, 1871. The first temple established was Mecca Temple, located in the New York City Ma-sonic Hall on September 26, 1872. Walter Fleming was elected as the first Potentate.

In 1875, there were only 43 Shriners in the Temple. In an effort to grow membership, at the June 6, 1876 meeting of the Mecca Temple, the Imperial Grand Council of the Ancient Order of the Mystic Shrine of North America was created. Walter Fleming was elected the first Imperial Potentate. After some reworking of the rituals and by-laws, there were 425 members in thirteen Temples covering eight states by 1878. Ten years later, in 1888, there were 7210 members in 48 Temples in the United States and Canada. When the Imperial Session was held in Washington D.C. in 1900, the A.A.O.N.M.S. had grown to 55,000 members and 82 Temples.

By 1938, there were about 340,000 members in the United States. That year, Life magazine published photographs of Shrine rites and ceremonies for the first time. It described Shriners as “among secret lodges, the number one in prestige, wealth and show”. The article also stated that “in the typical city, especially in the Middle West, the Shriners will include most of their prominent citizens.”

Barber County MARK PHILLIPSReporter

Greetings, fellow Nobles and Ladies. Barber County hopes all is well!!

Our unit had its regular meeting on March 6. We were blessed with the presence of our new Liaison, Noble Mark Butterfield, and also past Potentate David Pate, Shrine Bowl Chairman. Mark got us caught up on all of the current events. PP David Pate informed us about the upcom-ing Shrine Bowl and related events. Noble Buddy Williams took a full page ad for the program, and he and Lady Donna also had a $1000.00 donation to the Plane of Mercy, which they do annually at our unit’s Nut Fry. Our unit also sponsored two Shrine Bowl Banquet meals, which we were proud to be able to do.

Our unit also discussed upcoming events, such as the

Shrine Circus and the same day Pioneer Days in our hometown of Kiowa -- lots of events happening at same

time. On behalf of Firewagons, the unit would like to offer thank many times over to Noble John Kerr and his crew at K&K Diesel, Manchester, Oklahoma, for repairs and shine job they did on the unit’s Model “T” Firewagon, which he and Noble Greg Thurman proudly displayed at the Delano’s St. Paddy’s Parade. Thanks, Nobles; job well done!!

Best wishes to all, and remember, “Don’t let your Fezz get Fuzzy, recruit, and enjoy life. Until next time.

March 2017 roared into Western Kansas again. We have had some wildfires out in Western Kansas burning out of control. The Dodge City Shrine Club did wrap up another year of the Shrine Circus for 2017. I have been told that this was truly a very “exceptional” circus. This was the 66th year that the Shrine has held a circus in Dodge City. The circus that was used this year was The Hamid Circus (under the leadership of Jim & Shirley Hamid). They truly did one fantastic & great job. We even had people coming back to see the circus a second and third time.

The Dodge City Shrine Club held their March meeting on Wednesday, March 8th, at the Casey’s Cowtown Club, 503 E. Trail St., Dodge City, KS (620) 227 – 5225. Yes, the circus is over and it was time to regroup. The turnout was quite good for March and we were honored to have once again the Illustrious Potentate John “Rocky” McWilliams and his lovely wife Beverly who drove out from Wichita to have dinner with us and to just talk about what the Midian was doing for 2017. So all in all it was a great turnout.

One really great thing came out of this month’s meeting. We voted on taking the Big Fire Truck to have its brakes worked on so we can use the Big Fire Truck this year for parades and other Shrine events.

Well – you need to put on your 2018 calendar another great circus which will be coming to Dodge City again. This will be the 67th Annual Dodge City Shrine Circus. The 2018 circus will be the weekend of Friday,

February 16th, through Sunday, February 18th, 2018. We are going

to have another super three, fun-filled days. So, please remember to put this on your 2018 calendar.

The DC Shrine Club will hold its April meeting on Wednesday, April 12th. The meeting will be held at Central Station Bar & Grill - 207 E Wyatt Earp Blvd, Dodge City, KS 67801, Phone: (620) 225-1176. So please remember to put this on your calendar. Social time starts at 6:30 p.m. Dinner is at 7:00 p.m.

Faith is a state of openness or trust. To have faith is like when you trust yourself to the water. You don’t grab hold of the water when you swim, because if you do you will become stiff and tight in the water, and sink. You have to relax, and the attitude of faith is the very opposite of clinging, and holding on. In other words, a person who is fanatic in matters of religion, and clings to certain ideas about the nature of “The Spirit” and the universe becomes a person who has no faith at all. Instead they are holding tight. The attitude of faith is to let go, and become open to truth, whatever it might turn out to be.

NOTE: Please remember that the Wichita Shrine Circus is scheduled for April 21st – 23rd at Intrust Bank Arena.

Well, dad blame it if’n it ain’t already April. Danged if March just didn’t fly by! I’m sorry to say I won’t be a-writing for The Topics no more, as I done went and won the lottery big time! I’m a-going on tour with the Swedish Bikini Team to Florida to drive their bus and be their booty (oops, I mean body) guard. Oh, yeah, I have to give them their suntan oil rubdowns too! APRIL FOOLS! No, you’re stuck with me. Ha, ha.

Oh, well. I’ll grow on you like a fungus. We had a good time at our first parade in Ole’ Delano for St. Paddy’s Day. Sure had some good food to foller, too. Then ole Tractor Man, Scott Shirkey, done went and had a birthday. He’s 50 years old, and to think – he jes graduated the 6th grade last year! He’s a smart man (his momma says.) We sure had a good party fer him at The Oasis.

Me and ole’ Geno restocked and readied the food trailer so’s we could find everything at the fish feed/nut fry, coming up on the 15th of dis month. I know da date ‘cause that’s the day we workin’ class folks have to run from the IRS. “IRS” stands for “I are smart.” But them fellers want me to pay taxes again. I done did dat for a whole year! Dang, I ain’t no coke machine.

Boy, I cain’t wait fer dat dere fish fry/nut fry on the 15th. It’s going to be coed this year. Dat means dem girls can come, tee-hee. They’s all so purty! It only costs

$12.50 per plate, all you can eat. Plus they’ll have camel’s milk

dere too. Oh, yeah, it’s at Belle Plaine Lodge on Merchant Street. Hope to see ya’ll there!

And then on to the Shrine Circus, April 21, 22, and 23! Come on over to Intrust Bank Arena and help out! There’s jobs for everyone, even you, Gene! They’se gonna have trapezes and elephants and dem big ole bears. Oh, yeah, back up, Bobby. ‘Bout forgot about the Easter Egg Hunt at the Orchard Park Rec Center on the 15th. April’s a busy ole’ month, ain’t it? It’s only $5.00 per person to eat for adults, and kids eat free. I get to sit on the Easter Bunny’s lap again this year. The restraining order was only good for the one year. Sorry ‘bout yer luck there, Peter Cottontail. Anyhow, we’ll have fun!

We’ll be havin’ our next meeting on the first Wednesday of the month. Yes, the first Wednesday of April, Mr. President. We only have on first Wednesday each month. (You see where I’m goin’ with this – tee-hee!)

I’m a-goin’ to have to get outta here fer now. We’ll see ya’ll next time. Be safe, and remember: it’s okay to give ole Rick that ’66 Mustang for his birthday, Geno. Remember ole’ Farold done stole me a whole lotta gas from Elk County. Til next time: Buy a camper (or not) and come join us Nomads at the Lake.

Peace out.

Greenwood County CARL “C.F.” COXReporter

I mentioned last month that perhaps the groundhog was wrong because of the early spring weather we were enjoying. Well… apparently, he read the Topics last month and got the last laugh! Our first parade outing for St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Delano brought us 30 something degree weather, clouds and wind, followed by sleet later in the day. However, from the Facebook Pics, we did have one 3-Wheeler that was “tough enough” to brave the elements and represent the 3-Wheelers. Not sure if he didn’t get the memo that our Captain pulled the plug on the parade, or if he was just ready to ride, but either way… Way to go, Noble Dave Pate PP, for participating while the rest of us enjoyed our green beer indoors.

Our March meeting was a little light in attendance, but our new Captain Noble Steve Richard and his right hand and first Lady Melissa are off and running like the energizer bunny (as always!). We have a full schedule of events coming up: namely, the Potentates Ball on April 8th. The theme is “Puttin’ on the Ritz” and it will be a 1920s themed ball followed by the Pote’s Breakfast the next morning. Both should be a lot of fun. By the time you are reading this, I suspect you will already have your tickets. Dress will be

either 1920s attire, or formal suit/tux. Next up is planning

for our annual steak feed at Pre-Glow which is right around the corner.

We were shocked to hear that one of our longtime rivals and the “spark-

plug” of the India Broncos, Noble Gene Dozier PP, unexpectedly passed away of a heart attack. We have always had a fierce competition with the Broncos at more CSSA events that I can count, but one thing was sure, Noble Gene would come over and exchange friendly banter and fellowship. He was truly one of a kind, and if you ever met him, you would never forget him. Rest in peace, Brother Gene.

Last, but certainly not least, is the Circus, April 21-23. We will be taking our Greenwood County kids on April 21 and as usual, lots of help is needed, not to mention our duties with the Walk-Abouts all weekend. Thanks to Noble Jr. Rice for getting out and soliciting donations for the T-Shirts. Remember, the Club still gets commission from our ticket sales, so you are encouraged to buy them and give them out to family and friends so we can have another great circus at Midian.

Till next time, see you at the Circus!

Arab Patrol LARRY WILSON Reporter

Not much to report for this month but February 19 was a special day for Lady Jo Rhorer, wife of Captain Kyle Rhorer. Many friends, co-workers and family assembled on her front lawn early in the morning to welcome the Pink Heals truck.

Thoughts and prayers to the family. In other news, Captain Kyle Rhorer and Past Captain Dick Simpson rode the Hospital Van trailer in the St Patrick’s Day Parade in Delano, while patrolmen Rick Mitchell and I were busy getting the corned beef and cabbage ready for the post-parade crowd. Of course, due to the cold weather, many

other patrolmen were at Midian enjoying the meal including Veteran Patrolman Loyd Geist with Lady Sharon, Patrolman Alan Geist, and Patrolman

Nick Rhorer with Lady Melanie. Hmm, I know there were more there but my memory is slipping. April will be a busy month as the Patrol will be providing the Honor Guard for the Potentate’s Ball. The next weekend will be Easter at Orchard Park followed by Midian Circus the next weekend. As usual, we will be providing the Color Guard. A weekend off followed by Spring Ceremonial. So until next time, keep in step!

March Madness started off for us at our monthly meeting at the Candle Club. Attendance was commendable, including our Illustrious Sir Rocky and Chief Rabban Reiferd. We luckily had a private room this month, so the only ones disturbed by our rambunctious discussions were only the ones to blame, ourselves. We were most lucky to see our Brother Horst Hiller as he came bearing gifts. Horst has always been a strong supporter of Motor Patrol and Midian. This year was no exception as he made a very generous donation for our circus sales. Thank You, Horst! We very much appreciate everything you have done over the years. (Hope you get over the crud soon and feeling better.)

Fred Smith O.G. is our liaison and filled us in on all the upcoming important activities, and after that, all I remember was organized chaos, you know, a normal Motor Patrol meeting. March 11th brought on the St. Patrick’s 5K run which several of us help with. Yours truly got up at 4:45 AM to get the old Jeepster prepared for the parade following the 5K. I remembered that 2 years ago I had forgotten how empty my gas tank was, (gauge doesn’t work), and ran out of gas. I decided this time to get gas down the road in Haysville, before traveling too far. I started filling the old gal and it drank and drank and drank until I finally topped off at

21.07 gallons. That is .07 gallons more than what I thought my tank

held. I must have had the luck of the Irish on my side.

The 5K was a great success. Lady Laurie and several other Ladies and Nobles ran or walked the 5K as the rest of us froze our posteriors off. I heard they had about 1300 entries.

Next on our schedule before the parade was, of course, our annual pilgrimage to the Shamrock Lounge. Always a great time for properly preparing for the parade. They had a great breakfast for those who chose to eat, but most of us stayed on the Irish liquid diet. The Shamrock is always an interesting mix of people in costume and some not, though you might think they were; but is it just the way they are? (Different strokes -- you had to be there.)

The parade was cold, but it is always a fun parade and well attended by all. It always seems longer than it is after you’re reminded how far away the next pit stop is.

Next stop The Oasis and time to nourish ourselves on the corned beef and cabbage and/or bierocks. Fun day with great friends! Life is great! Sell Circus !

The chefs will be very busy in April. We start with the Potentate’s Breakfast on Sunday, April 9. For those who wish to start early, we will meet at 9 a.m. for breakfast at the Town and Country Restaurant on West Kellogg. Then proceed to Sam’s Club to purchase the food, then to the Shrine kitchen to start preparing the food. We should be in the kitchen by 11:30 a.m.

Next is the Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 15. We will probably meet at Orchard Park at 9 a.m. to start cooking the hot dogs

and hamburgers. If this is not enough, on Saturday

22, April 22, we have been asked to cook a steak dinner, complete with baked potato and garlic salad, to be

served to 250 people at the Shrine Circus between performances. We will need help on this one. Come to our meeting on Wednesday, April 12, at 7 p.m. to get the latest details on the Easter Egg Hunt and the Circus. Come and see what Roscoe will be doing. Last year he was spotted at the Easter Egg Hunt stroking a stuffed lamb.

Million Dollar Band RICK MILHON Reporter

Charles Lloyd Barnhouse learned to play cornet in his Grafton, West Virginia, home town. He went on the road with a traveling theatrical company, as one could do in the late 1800s. After some years he settled in Iowa, composed music and started a music publishing company. One of his pieces “Among the Roses” made lovely accompaniment for the ladies on the high trapeze. It’s in our repertoire as the Million Dollar Band prepares for the Shrine Circus, April 21-23.

As the acts paraded in to the circus tents of bygone days, you might have heard the march “Bombasto” by O. R. Farrar being played by the band. Probably that band was made of a handful of musicians who traveled with the show plus some local musicians. Before the days of commercial radio and commercial television, there was a lot of opportunity for local entertainment including musical ensembles who played as an occupation. Farrar was a Mason and a

leader of various bands.America’s circus “March

King,” Karl King traveled to Emporia, Kansas, to join a circus, only to find that the circus had been run out of

town by the Lyon County Sheriff. He caught up with the show later. Still later he wrote a quick number that scrambles the act out of the ring. He called it the “Emporia Galop”

For a change of pace the circus band might have played one of Henry Fillmore’s “trombone smears.” These ragtime pieces might have played while clowns were working the crowd.

The above numbers are in the Million Dollar Band’s Circus Folder. Listen for them as you work on our big fund raiser. Better yet, break out that instrument you have in the closet, come to a Monday night rehearsal at 7:00 p.m., and start playing this fun music. To audition, you have to prove that you are breathing.

NascartsHello, race fans:The St. Paddy’s Parade was fun.

Richard Mardis was on the pole and Todd Lassley was on the outside. The green flag was thrown, and there was some tight racing, door to door. With one lap left, the 88 car had a hiccup. The pit crew got him back in the race and he finished last. Greg Treadwell

and Richard Steel failed post-race inspection!

Happy birthday to all Nascarts and their Ladies who had birthdays in March. A lot of us came out and supported the Shrine Night at 81 Speedway on March 25. A big thanks to all who did! See you at the next parade!

Howdy, all! Reading this you likely have some miles on the scooters this spring and are solving small issues that winter hibernation can sometimes bring along. The March meeting was well attended and included much discussion on the status of several events that are right in front of us. Our Liaison Officer Marshal Gary Gelvin reminded everyone of the importance of Membership and included the dates of Masonic Info gatherings as we head towards Spring Ceremonial. Goes without saying that Circus is just around the corner and Captain Robert suggested that the unit furnish a main dish like pulled pork or beef and if the EE Ladies want to send along a snack item we can have some food and drink available between shows and intermission segments. As you read this, there is still plenty of time to get hold of our Circus Chairman Brother Jerry Elscott for tickets.

The first garage sale timing and location has moved a bit…it will be in May now and at the home of Brother Jeff Preston and Lady Brenda (exact date/time and more info coming at the April meeting, Friday 4/14). In any case, be rounding up your goodies so we can get them to the sale!

The Fayetteville Bikes, Blues and BBQ was discussed as a possible Unit Run later this year. Brother A.J. is checking into

the availability of rooms in the Bentonville area so stay tuned for

updates as we get closer. It’s always a good time and great music, to say nothing of the BBQ. Could be you

have ideas on rooms in the general area too, so bring them along to a meeting.

The Brothers voted to sponsor a West Squad player at the Shrine Bowl again for the 2017 Game which will be in El Dorado this time: Saturday, July 29th! The parade is at 11:00 AM (lineup is at 10:00). Pregame activities start at 6:15 PM and the game is at 7:00 PM. This reporter understands that the EE Ladies stepped up to the plate again with a big ad in the game program book. Way to g, Ladies! It would make pretty good sense to challenge all the Units and Clubs at Midian to do the very same thing!

The Captain reminds all of us that 2017 EE Unit dues need to get paid so that our Treasurer Brother Jeff Preston can close that chapter of his books. We all need to thank Brother Jeff for getting our financial statement in to the Midian Office on time! This is not a small deal and the Divan ap-preciated it too.

That finishes it this time, folks. Here’s to a great riding season and to a terrific group of people who truly enjoy each other’s company and the two wheel (and three wheel) adventures!

Oriental BandAfter discussing it for several

years, the Oriental Band decided to do something they really didn’t want to do -- ride a float instead of marching. But reality took over, as fewer and fewer of our members wanted to march. We purchased the trailer of the Legion of Honor, and after some refurbishing by Midian’s Marshall, JR Gelvin, who is our liaison this year, we put it to use for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Delano. JR and his lady Denise also graciously pulled our float in the parade!! A big thanks to them for their work!!!! By the way, as much as we hated to do this, after the parade, the consensus of opinion was, “Why didn’t we do this sooner?”

Thanks to the Nobles and Ladies who attended our

Valentine’s Steak Dinner on February 11th. The food was excellent and we are planning on doing this as an even

bigger and better event next year. Thanks to Noble Larry Wilson for cooking the steaks and Noble Jackie Broyles for making the salad.

We are seriously practicing early this year, as we are attending the Association of Oriental Bands of North America Jamboree in Kansas City, March 31st to April 2. This competition is replacing the competition normally held at the Imperial session each year. We have 15 Nobles and most of their Ladies attending.

YoshiWell, Yoshi enjoyed our first

parade for St Paddy’s Day. Although it was cold, there was a good turnout.

Yoshi is selling raffle tickets to a bench that supports the Shrine and other Masonic lodges. The tickets are 1 for $5 or 3 for $10! So see any Yoshi member for tickets, or they are available at the desk down at the Shrine.

We have 2 parades this month to attend. The first one is

on April 8 in downtown Wichita, and the other is in Benton on April 29. In the mix of all this is our circus which

is April 21-23. If anyone needs tickets, call Paul, our circus chairman, and let him know what you need. Until next time, keep the shiny side up and the rubber on the road!

Golden VIPSMeeting of the Golden VIP’s

was called to order by President David Pate, PP at 12 noon, Thursday, March 9, 2017 at the KMH Auditorium. There were 25 members and two guests’ present for the meeting. Our Guests’ were Potentate “Rocky” McWilliams, and his Lady Beverley McWilliams.

The Flag Salute was led by Noble Bill Webber and the Invocation was given by Lady Joan Harris. After brief introductions, our members and guests enjoyed a lunch of Brisket, Green Beans, Fried Potato quarters, Dinner Rolls, Tossed Green Salad and White Cake topped with Blueberry for dessert.

Potentate “Rocky” McWilliams was introduced and asked to give the VIP mem-bership his Liaison Report. He told us of the many events that are planned for Midian through the month of April. He reminded us of the great opportunity of the Shrine Sportsmen raffle and the commissions we could receive when we sell the raffle tickets. This event is scheduled for August and at Cessna Activity Center once again. Mrs. McWilliams was asked to speak to us about the Potentate Ball and Breakfast on April 8th & 9th. She also reminded the ladies of the Spring Ladies Luncheon during Ceremonial and the luncheon was to be held at KMH.

Our guest speaker was our President, David Pate, PP. He spoke of a homicide case that occurred early December of 1987. The man and wife were divorced and in a

bitter battle for the custody of their 2-year-old daughter. The

ex-husband called and wanted to meet her at the east mall to Christmas Shop for the daughter, she agreed to meet

with him. When the met at the mall, they got out of their respective vehicles and the ex-husband hit her on the head with a gun rending her unconscious. He got her in his vehicle and drove to a mortuary where he worked part time. He placed her in the crematorium and began to cremate her liter-ally still alive. After the cremation, he took the remains to a friend’s house and asked if he could store the bucket and would return later in the day to retrieve it.

In the mean-time her work called her residence and them her parents. They reported the situation to the police depart-ment and told the officers they feared for her safety and of the proposed meeting at the mall. The investigation began and it was determined that there was evidence enough to bring the ex-husband and bring him in for questioning. Aa the case pursued, the District Attorney was consulted and an arrest warrant was issued.

The ex-husband was found guilty and is now spending the rest of his life in prison.

Birthdays for the month of attending members were: Noble Gerald Hall, March 21st. There were no anniversaries for February.

Lady Joan Harris gave the benediction.

Greetings, Nobles, Ladies, Family & Friends:

The Director’s Staff have been busy ramping up for the Spring Ceremonial, and are eager to welcome a class of new Nobles to Midian Shriners. Members are learning and rehearsing their parts of the first and second sections of the Ceremonies in hopes of making it a fun and memorable experience for all! Please mark your calendars for the weekend of May 5 and plan to attend and participate; let’s bring the new Nobles and their Ladies in with style. If there are any existing Nobles not in the Director’s Staff who would like to help in the ceremonials, it is not too late to join our illustrious unit (there are numerous Past Potentates in our unit.) Please contact a Director’s Staff member for a petition and a list of available parts/duties (we may even let you help without joining?)

Again we want to thank our Ladies & members for preparing the excellent snacks and refreshments enjoyed after the February Midian Stated Meeting. We also want to thank our members and ladies who helped at the Wichita Running Company St. Patrick’s Day Run and following parade and party. A few of us made a visit to India

Shriners in Oklahoma City on March 18 and enjoyed fun & fellowship at their

St. Patrick’s Day Dance & Party. Many of us also supported the Midian Night @ 81 Speedway on March 25.

April will also prove to be a busy month as we support Midian Shriners Circus at Intrust Bank Arena. Some of our members will be in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for the annual Shrine Director’s Association (SDA) meeting/convention. We hope to see you all at The Easter Egg Hunt and Children’s party at Orchard Park on April 15 as it will prove to be great fun for the young & old.

Director’s Staff is planning a few of our social events for the rest of the year: first, we plan a dinner out at The Barn in Burrton, KS in May. We also plan to do our annual Steak Feed and benefit auction at the home of Gary (J.R.) & Denise Gelvin (again thanks for the hospitality!) this summer. This fall we do our Weenie Roast/Picnic, Fall Ceremonial and look forward to our holiday outing and New Year’s Party.

Let’s keep having fun and helping children!

Keystone Kops “MOON”Reporter

Hello, everyone! It’s a great day to be a Shriner! I hope you enjoyed the recent cold snap after all that warm February stuff. It looks like another fruitless year for those with orchards. Mother Nature is not often kind to us here in Kansas. The Koppers are going strong anyway, cold weather or not. You can tell by the pictures this month that the St. Patrick Day parade on March 11 was a bit on the chilly side, but the Kops gott’er done. This was our first parade of the year 2017 under our new Chief Scott Shirkey. He was right there leading the Kops through a cold and wet parade, in spite of his recent ascent into a much higher age bracket! No, Scott, it doesn’t help you on your income taxes to get older, in case you are even thinking about your new age benefits. Actually, there aren’t many. Pro golfers at your age move into a new tour and a new shorter tee box, unlike the Chippers, but what are you a pro at? Wearing leprechaun outfits? Catching teeny bass? Sorry, but none of those are age related benefits. I did hear that Charlie Brown used his age to retire recently, but you seem to be already be retired. I’ll let you know if I hear of anything for guys your age.

I was wondering, as I do a lot, if you had seen the recent news about Lightnin’s counterpart, Harrison Ford, and his incident at an airport. Sounds familiar, huh? I was wondering though if Coxy was on that flight also. Coxy just can’t seem to get enough of those small plane incidents! I do know

Darrin Cox does love his fish-ing. He is Scott Shirkey’s partner

again this year at the Shell Knob Benefit Bass Tournament. They both love their teeny bass fishing! With all

the smack talk and wagers going on, we may have to have a “to tell the truth degree” at the cabins this year before the blast off. It will be a blast for sure!

Now I have some news to report, believe it or not! It was recently (this seems to be the word of the month) discovered that Lady Lesly Decker is a cheese expert. She learned all about the different kinds from her days at Dillons. On an a more technical level, the rocket scientists of the Midian Keystone Kops, recently found some leaks in the o-rings of our infamous water squirting fire extinguishers. This being a major problem with the launching of the pressurized contents, the Kops’ rocket team put their brains to working and it was discovered that somehow we needed new square o-rings to fit into the circular top of the extinguishers. So if anyone out there has some square o-rings the Kops can purchase, please give Scott Shirkey a call! Hey, see you all at the brand new Midian Shrine Circus!!!!!

I Wonder?? What kind of cheese goes with Miller Lite?? I Wonder?? Were the Midian Koppers silent at the Mid-Winter meeting?? I Wonder?? Teeny Bass, teeny …..? Hands?? I Wonder?? Will Moon sur-vive the bass tournament trip?? I Wonder??

Boss Klown Travis (Stinky) Watson, Jim (Murf) Murphy, Wally (Klum Ze) Payne, and Brian (Chester) Chestnut all helped Dodge City cel-ebrate its circus. A big thank you to all the Dodge City clowns and their ladies for their welcome and hospitality. We had a great time taking pictures and entertaining the crowd. Stinky even rode the elephant! Murf and I got a picture with one of our Shrine kids, Ali, her little sister, and her grandmother.

I hear the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Wichita was a cold one, but Boss Klown Stinky, Rob (Bear)Barnes, Jared (Squeaks) Krueger, and Arv (Krumbulz) Krumins still had fun with the crowd.

That’s all for now. I hope every-one has a great and safe month, and I’ll see you at the circus!

CartoonGreetings from the wild and

crazy Cartoon unit:We would like to congratulate

Cole Robinson for be being presented with the Bernie Rishell Memorial Award, Cartoon Character of the Year.

Parade season is once again upon us and we are out there making kids of all ages smile.

We had two lady cartoons parade with us in the St Patrick’s Day parade (Daisy Duck, Nina Gracy and Peppa Pig, Kira Robinson.) We also had the debut of Donald Duck (John Gracy.) We heard MANY kids yell out with glee in regards to the new characters. As we all know, it was a very cold parade. It was strange not being covered in sweat by the end of the parade.

We will be making an appearance at the McConnell AFB spa day. It is a HUGE honor to help out with this event. We will also be at the Midian Shrine Easter Egg Hunt at Orchard Park on April 15 at 10am. This event is free to the public.

If you have not heard; the circus will be in town April 21-23. We will once again be running the photo booth. Some of the lady Toons will be joining us for

this event. We are hoping that having a few female Toons will

draw even more people to our booth. We will also be in need of spotters at the circus. A spotter is a person that

escorts a Toon around and helps protect them from overly “affectionate” people and at times serves as the eyes and ears of the Toon they are escorting.

If you would like your unit to take a picture with the Toons, contact John Gracy to schedule a time.

If you would like to test drive a costume during the circus (or a parade) contact either John Gracy or Rick Alamo. A test drive will let you see for yourself how much fun we have interacting with the kids.

The Benton parade (hometown of our Potentate) is April 29. Line-up is at 1 p.m.

History fun fact: The word mascot comes from the French word “mascotte”, meaning “lucky charm.”

The Cartoon Unit will be taking a new Unit photo on Saturday, April 22, during the second session of the circus. Please plan to be there.

Hospital Van Drivers The meeting was called to

order by Commander Doug Bogart. Myron Frick led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Vance Burns opened with a prayer. Thank you, both!

The Shriners Hospital in St. Louis was saddened by the sudden death in March of their longtime Patient Care Coordinator, Sandy Thompson. The Wichita van drivers appreciated Sandy’s friendly attitude and helpfulness whenever they took patients for treatment; she will be greatly missed. Our heartfelt condolences to her family.

We have a new van! (Well, almost new.) It’s a 2016 Grand Caravan. We traded in the Traverse, and in my mind, that was a good thing. Illustrious Sir Lonnie Nichols had been working on acquiring us a different vehicle, and Big Al at Davis Moore was a great help as well to us in getting this vehicle

for the unit. The Van Unit’s summer picnic

is scheduled for July 16 this year; it will be at the same place as last year, Boeing Employees Club. The tentative time

is set for 1-5 p.m. The date is a bit later than what we would have liked, but it is the best date we could get. I know July is hot, but the building is air conditioned so we can all survive the heat.

Shirts to be purchased by the unit were also discussed. We will pay the first $10.00 for unit members, one time only. This does include our lady members!

We had a great turnout for the last few meetings! Let’s see if we can get even more to the next one. It is scheduled for 7 p.m. on April 26. Put this date on your calendar: we would love to see you at the meeting!

First Lady Notesby BEV McWILLIAMS

April will be one of the busiest months at Midian. Hold on tight, cause here we go! “Puttin’ on the Ritz”, the 2017 Potentate’s Ball, is on Saturday, April 8, at the Wichita Hyatt hotel. The Roarin’ Twenties theme should be lots of fun with period costumes, dancing and photo areas. This is a formal event and tickets are required. Rocky and I hope to see many of you there.

The Children’s Easter Egg Hunt will be held at Orchard Park on Saturday, April 15, beginning at 10 a.m. The egg hunt will be organized by age groups, games with prizes will be open to all ages, and face painting and balloons will be available from the Clown Units of Midian Shrine and the LOS. Lunch will be provided for children and adults may eat with the purchase of a $5 ticket. Bring your children, grandchildren and the neighborhood kids. This is always a great event for everyone!

The circus will be the following weekend, beginning on Friday, April 21, and continuing through Sunday, April 23. This exciting event requires lots of workers and positive attitudes, beginning on the work night on Thursday! If you haven’t volunteered to help out, you still have time. Let’s make this a circus to remember!

The last Saturday of the month, April 29, is the annual Benton Day Parade. Rocky and I will be hosting hospitality at the Benton Banquet Hall beginning at 11:00 a.m. We’ll have lunch and attend the 2:00 p.m. parade. (Line-up at the middle school is at 1:00 p.m.) We hope you’ll attend and support Rocky in our hometown parade.

The Captain of the Guard, Mark Butterfield, and Lady Cynda Wright planned an outstanding St. Patrick’s Day Party. The food prepared by the Chefs Unit was delicious! The decorations and games were great. Thank you, Noble Doug Chartier, Lady Michelle Grillot, and all of the members of the Aide Team #4 for making the event so much fun!

To continue the Rocky and Bev story….Rocky decided to leave the medical field to become part of the family Interstate Battery business. Rocky helped to expand the business and eventually bought his dad’s portion of the company. During this time, Rocky coached basketball and assisted with scouting activities with his daughters. The basketball teams went undefeated. The Girl Scout “Dad-And-Me” campouts, ski trips and group outings were unforgettable. Rocky also had time for lots of hunting and fishing. He even trained his own hunting dogs. He looks back on those days and wonders how he had time and energy for all the activities. Then he remembers “age” may have had something to do with it! During this time we moved to Benton, where Rocky helped to build our home. We hired one full time carpenter and had some volunteer help from my dad in building the house. Rocky worked side by side with the carpenter and completed the home in about 7 months. We still live in the house today in Benton.

I began teaching again, as a K-8 Music Teacher at Towanda Grade School, part of the Circle Unified School District. There are a few Shriners and some ladies who were students there and will always be “one of my kids.” (Steve Richard, Mike Ward, Billy Bardin, Mindi Bardin, and Jana Potter, just to name a few!)

I enjoyed teaching and getting students involved in learning about music. The school singing groups traveled to sing on KAKE TV, at the state capital in Topeka, and even to Washington, DC. The students created instruments, composed and performed their own music, created puppets and shows, learned dances and played instruments. The thought was this: If the teacher is having “fun” then the students would have “fun” too!

That’s how Rocky and I feel about the Shrine. If we’re having “fun” then the nobility will have fun, too! We’re having a blast and hope you are as well. Let’s continue the journey together, keeping the purpose in mind and having a great time!

Hugs, Bev
