2016 APPROVED PARADE LIST

ATTENTION NOBLESJust over a year ago food service in the Oasis Room was discontinued because of the

substantial financial losses being incurred. The Oasis Task Force was immediately formed. Volunteers to this group were charged with reviewing the operations, determining possible causes for the financial loss and identifying business-based practices which could make food service feasible. The full task force looked at business practices, past and future. Their work resulted in job descriptions for Oasis staff being written and implemented.

The Task Force surveyed the Nobility. As a result several promotions/events were planned throughout this year. The Task Force evaluated food costs, spoilage and waste costs. They implemented guidelines and practices for reducing waste costs. They prepared a new menu and evaluated vendors to identify the best pricing for food inventory. The Task Force continues to monitor the operations of the Oasis Room..

The Oasis Room is viewed as a “member benefit” not meant to make a profit but also not meant to be a big drain on Midian. To date there have been months of profit and a couple of months of loss. To sustain the Oasis Room will require that more units and individuals utilize this benefit. The Task Force is always open to suggestions and ideas to further maintain the course.

Potentate From page 1ity and commitment for the 2015 year. It was truly a commitment and we appreciate it greatly.

Thank You to our Executive Aides & our Aides for helping with the food & beverage for several events, setting up and tearing down of the parties. Again we appreciated your commitment to helping us out in 2015.

A HUGE Thank You goes to our Chief Aides Noble Ray Richecky & Lady Diana. You have made us look good throughout this entire year. When we ask you to do this job and make this commitment 2 years prior, you never hesitated in responding. We will never be able to thank you enough for all you have done.

Lady Terri & I want to congratulate Incoming Potentate & First Lady, Noble Bart Ogden & Lady Lesa. We have enjoyed working with you over the years and look forward to your leadership this next year.

As Lady Terri & I are nearing the end of our journey as Potentate & First Lady, we want to Thank the Nobility & Ladies for allowing us to have the ride of our life. The support everyone has given us all year long had been top notch. Midian is a great Shrine Center and of course our Philanthropy is the reason we keep doing what we do. It takes ALL OF YOU to make our Shrine Center Shine. We are not going anywhere and will be around in 2016. Hope to see all of you then.

Everyone have a great 2016 !!

just that – very enchanting. We had a great evening with our Shrine FAMILY and it will also be an evening for the memory books. All of you who attended – thank you so much for helping us make more memories. I have to say, the decorations were outstand-ing. Terri’s “Decorating Committee” did it again. The room looked beautiful. Thanks to Noble Hank “The Mechanic” for keep-ing us dancing. Congratulations to Noble Richard Mardis & Noble Gary Dix for winning the Mike Seltzer’s rings.

There are still a few things left for us to take care of this year.

The Directors Staff will be hosting a New Year’s Eve Bash in the Midian Oasis. Doors open at 7:00 pm and there will be dancing, food, fellowship with a champagne toast at Midnight.

There is also the DONE & DONE party on January 16th. I understand Lady Terri met her goal in the Legs Fund, so the Ponytail could possibly be DONE also. I would still like to raise more money for the Plane of Mercy, so don’t get the cart before the horse. There is also a rumor that there might also be another ponytail coming off…….Noble Farold???? I’m sure Noble Steve Julian & Lady Sissy along with Noble Harold Brewer & Lady Phillis have some things planned. We would love to see a huge attendance for this event. Let’s go out with a BANG or a CLIP.

Congratulations to the Shriner of the Month – Noble Larry Wilson. Job Well Done !!

We want to Thank the Midian Board of Directors and our entire Midian Divan (You are the BEST) for taking on the responsibil-

Happy New Year to all. Hope you had a good holiday season. Dues for 2016 are still a bargain ten dollars. Send then on in or catch us at the next meeting, which will be at Midian Shrine Center on Wednesday January 13th.

Our club made a good showing at the December stated meeting and made dona-tions to the Plane of Mercy, the Sunshine Fund, and the Building Fund. Remember to have fun with your like-minded friends. In addition, you can be proud of your contribu-tion to the philanthropic work done by the

Shrine.Noble Dale Lee has come up

with a basketball signed by all team members of the WSU Basketball Team. Some lucky person will have

the opportunity to take possession of this keepsake at the New Year’s Eve Party at Midian. Thanks to Dale for all his efforts.

Please try to make our January meeting as we blaze our path forward for 2016. If for some reason something changes, cards will have new details. Otherwise see you at 6 pm on January 13th.

Hello from Sumner County Shrine Club. On December 4, we elected new officers for next year; President, Scotty Clark, 1st Vice President, Winston Smith, 2nd Vice President, Rick Brown, Treasurer, Tom Marlow, and Reporter, Bobbie Herrman. Lets give them our help and support. Scotty made the statement, as fast as time goes he may run for 3 years. Jackie Broyles, Scotty Clark and Tom Marlow fed us some of their famous chili. They even let me stir the chili, of course they were looking over my shoulder to see that I was stirring with care. A special thanks to all of the Keystone Kops for attending and the support they all give to Sumner County Shrine. I need to send a thank you to Cassie for assisting with

preparing the chili and Myron Frick for delivering the ice. We

were disappointed with the small turn out and are wondering where else you could go for free food, all you can eat,

along with free camels milk. Sumner County made donations to the

Plane of Mercy, Sunshine Fund, Building Fund and Jeff Sowder fund.

Remember February 12 will be turkey fries at the Belle Plaine American Legion. Make a note of this date as we will not be sending a reminder card.

This being my last column for Sumner County Shrine, I want to thank all for the help and support I received. So long and keep the Faith.

With great sadness we mourn the sudden and unexpected visit of the Black Camel to Noble Rex Graham, honored Air Force Veteran, Past President of this Club, Past Master of Halcyon Masonic Lodge in Peabody, and active in performing and teaching Masonic ritualistic work in Newton Lodge #142. Victim of apparent complications following knee surgery, Noble Rex, an active Mason for over 60 years, is truly missed. Sincere condolences to lady Marjorie and family.

As we are about to put this year to rest we pause to thank some of those behind the scenes who help to make our meetings a success. For several years Rae Ann Anderson, (who must have a house filled with decorative “stuff” for any occasion), along with helpers Helen Saylor and Terri Hankins, have provided themed table

decorations to brighten the atmosphere of an otherwise functional but “blah” meeting

room, adding class and frequently a bit of levity to our dinner meetings.

Editor’s note..The best decorations are those that are not only in good taste, but also taste good!

For years Charlie’s Restaurant banquet manager Mary Schroeder has single-handedly managed to somehow keep our orders straight, salads cold, entrees hot and coffee cups filled, all with a smile and a kind word...although she sometimes has been heard to mutter to herself something about “herding cats”! We suspect that has something to do with working with “squirrels”!

Wishing you and yours a happy and prosperous New Year, all we can add is...”Please pass the nuts!”

2015 is behind us and 2016 is just getting started. I hope Santa was good to everyone and you had time to enjoy the holiday season. Our Christmas Party at the Country Club was a huge success and everyone reported having a great time. Yours truly was stuck at work, but I hear we missed a fun evening. Thanks to our outgoing President Noble Fergie Ferguson and Lady Beverly for hosting the party.

The final numbers on the Grab-a-Slab showed that we really know how to cook and sell ribs. The fundraiser was a huge success and we already have people asking for more. Our net proceeds were better than the haunted house and we didn’t have to dress up in scary outfits.

Speaking of fundraising, we pre-

sented several checks at the December Stated Meeting for

the support of the various Midian funds. Many thanks to all who worked hard throughout the year to

make these funds possible for us to donate to our philanthropy.

Remember, your 2016 dues for the 3-Wheelers and Shrine Club are due. Once we get our Secretary back, I’m sure we will be getting reminders.

We will be having our Installation of Officers later in the month, and also the Potentate’s Ball is in January which is earlier than we are used to. Please watch the Topics calendar for upcoming events. It’s sure to be another fun filled year at Midian!

“DOC” MACReporter

December is a month of reflection & tallying up the results of your whole year!

I am sure that many of you out there who read this want to “ Thank “GOD for their Life & Many things” cause that is who you look up to - I know that from reading other articles here in the Topics that “God” has graced many of you this past year with many wonderful “graces of god” –

Probably for many of you your “Christmas” decorations are up & the house feels so festive….Your Christmas shopping is done and the items for the stocking stuffers are bought also --

So, all I am asking is that you take a few minutes and reflect on this past 12 months and the people who have crossed your path and touched your life and the lives that you have touched with all that you do both for when doing things for the Shrine and also in your personal / or / working time.

I also hope that many of you are looking forward to this month & the upcoming months and appreciate what has happened in your life in 2015.

Well we are now into the last month of 2015. This year has been a very interest-ing year to say the least. We are about 11 months from electing a new so called “ President of the United States “ and again start to hopefully see some good changes in the USA and World. I still wonder what is going to happen between now ( December 2015 ) – and the election in November 2016 for President & Vice President.

Yes, the Dodge City Shrine Club held their DECEMBER 2015 meeting on Wednesday, the 9th of December at Central Station Bar & Grill. There was a really good turn out this month. Noble Reiferd and Lady Judy came from Wichita, Kansas. And Lady Judy gave a nice gift to all the ladies who were in attendance. The food was great and the comradeship was even better.

The elections were held for 2015 – to 2016 and the officers are: President: Noble Opie Astorga; 1st Vice: Noble Kenneth Miller; Secretary / Treasure: Noble Paul Lehmkuhler. This should be another great year with this group to lead the Dodge City Shrine Club and Clown Unit.

We will be at the Winter Expo Jan 22,23,24. The Winter Expo Gun, Knife and Collectible Show will be held at the

Western State Bank Expo Center. So you all come out for

this. The Shrine Club are going to have Clowns & Cars at this EXPO to have your picture taken with them

and they are also going to be selling Tickets for the upcoming Shrine Circus in Feb 2016.

By the time this article comes out Thanksgiving is over – Christmas is around the corner and the New Year 2016 is com-ing down the home stretch. So we have the following happening:

Friday, 25th December – Christmas; Friday, 01st January – New Year’s Day ( Parades & Football games); Monday 08th February - Chinese New Year ( The Year of the Monkey) –

---- and ---- Yes, you are right again – The 65th

year in Dodge City to have the upcoming Shrine Circus. This year it will be held at the Dodge City Civic Center. So I know that the Shriners are out there selling tickets, so go and get your Tickets for this upcoming Circus. I heard from the grapevine that this is going to be one of the” Best of the Best “ Circuses that Dodge City has ever had. The 2016 circus will be the weekend of 26th – to – 28th February.

We are going to have 3 days and 8 shows of one “TRULY” Super CIRCUS for 2016.

Friday: Feb: 26 --- 2 showsSaturday: Feb: 27 --- 3 showSunday: Feb: 28 --- 3 showsThe DC Shrine Club will hold their first

2016 meeting in JANUARY on the 13th, Wednesday. The meeting will be held at the Casey’s Cowtown Club, 503 E. Trail St., Dodge City, KS (620) 227 – 5225. Please remember that this meeting is the “ BIG CIRCUS KICK OFF” meeting so come out and pick up your tickets & posters. Social time starts at 6:30 pm. Dinner is at 7:00 pm.

“May All Your Days Be Circus Days”Have a truly blessed and wonderful

month.Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen Good night America wherever you are.NOTE: Thanks for the past 12 months

and allowing me the pleasure to write every month for Dodge City Shrine Club & Clown Unit --- I do truly appreciate it very much – Blessings to each and every one of you for 2015 and the upcoming 2016. See you again in 2016. Thanks

Directors Staff MARK BUTTERFIELDReporter

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! If you are reading this, we must have all survived 2015 and hope that you are looking forward to 2016. May it be happy, prosperous and most of all healthy for you and yours. By the time you read this, the Midian News Year’s Eve Blast hosted by the Directors Staff will be history and I am sure that it was the best party of last year and this year, all wrapped up into one night. Many thanks to DJ Ronnie Choy for stepping in at the last minute when Jim Bob Montgomery had to go on the injured reserve list. We trust that Jim Bob is mending and doing much better.

On December 4th, the Directors Staff got into the Christmas spirit in a couple ways. The Nobles and Ladies of the unit met in the Scimitar room at the temple to celebrate the season with our annual Christmas party. We enjoyed a very fine catered meal, toured West Wichita on a beautiful evening via trolleys to view Christmas

lights, and then returned to the Oasis for a nightcap and fellowship. But before all of

that we got into the real spirit of and reason for Christmas: giving and sharing. Prior to our meal, we were informed that one of our trolley drivers for the evening had unfortunately come upon tough times just before the holidays by having some unexpected medical expenses in the family. In true Shrine form, we passed the fez before our meal and collected $500.00 that was presented to the driver by President Ricky Brotherton upon our return to the temple after viewing Christmas lights. The recipient was thoroughly surprised and extremely apprecia-tive. But the real Christmas present was received by the members of the Directors Staff whom had contributed to the cause.

Spring Ceremonial is only 4 months away. It’s not too early to start THINKING MEMBERSHIP!

Ambassadors JOHN W. STEWARTMild Mannered Reporter

The Ambassadors did hold their Annual Christmas Party at Rolling Hills Country Club last month. The decorations and treats from hosts Betty and “Gene” Lygrisse, P.P. gave everyone in attendance a warm and loving feeling. Once again, a big thank you to these two. The evening was excellent and enjoyed by all. However, it has been pointed out to this reporter that no where have I mentioned in prinmt anything about the dessert we all so much enjoyed in November. The homemade cake Lady Sherry Burnett provided for us at the Scotch and Sirloin. My mistake. Please forgive.

We have a new slate of Officers of the Ambassadors of Midian for 2016. Our beloved outgoing Director General “Al” Bass, who has led us well for the past four years, has stepped down. Our new Officers are: Ray Barber, Director General; Kenny Loffland, Assistant Director General; Art Van Dresser, Chief of Council and John Stewart, Chief of Protocol.

These Nobles were duly Installed by our Divan Liaison Officer, Marshall Tom Propps. Following the proclamation and the cheers from the crowd our New Director General took time to extend a heart felt ThankYou to Noble Ambassador “Al” Bass and Lady Retta for the many years of service they have given to our Unit in particular and to our Shrine in General. Often big shoes are hard to fill but we’re looking forward to the enthusiasm Director General Ray brings to the Office. In November Noble Art Van Dresser reminded us that we

annually donate $1000.00 from our treasury to the Plane of Mercy at

the Stated Communication in December. We reaffirmed this tradition. He then reminded us that this might entail an as-

sessment because our Bank account requires that we maintain a minimum amount. With the asurance that we, as a Unit will meet these obligations we voted to make the contribution.

At the December, 2015 stated com-munication the Ambassadors of Midian presented Ambassador Lonnie Nichols, P.P. and Chairman of the Plane of Mercy with a check for this amount, i.e. $1000.00.

Liaison Marshall Tom was happy to report that Lady Elizabeth Piper, widow of Noble Ambassador Floyd Piper, deceased, has donated Noble Floyd’s Masonic/Shrine ri,ng, recently appraised by Mike Seltzer Jewelers at $6500.00, under the conditions that a limited number of tickets be sold at $20.00 per ticket and a drawing be held at the Shrine Christmas Party where the ring will find new ownership. Proceeds from the drawing go to the Plane of Mercy. The odds are good and the cause is noble. Congratulations. He went on to announce upcoming events elsewhere throughout the Shrine.

Our next meeting will be held at the Masonic home January 15th, at 6:00 p.m. The Unit will provide wine and beer for your enjoyment. The Beacon still shines bright welcoming us each weekday 8:45 to 10:00 a.m. If you haven’t stopped down yet, it’s never too late. Provost Guard CARL LOSEY

Reporter

We had our December meeting and Christmas party on Wednesday, December 9. The meeting was held short due to the fact that we needed to install new officers.

New officers for 2016 are Marshall Carl Losey, Capt. Dan Hauserman, Treasurer Aaron Tabing, Secretary Mel Graves, sickness and health Steve Townes, entertainment Levi Hauserman.

Meeting was adjourned and Christmas party started. The food was very good, it was barbecue. Thanks to Jessica and Tracy

for all the work they did on the meal and setting up all the tables.

A gift was given to the outgoing Marshall Dennis Brunhoeber from the unit, and he presented gifts to his

officers.Thank you to all the members and their

ladies for coming to the Christmas party and making it a success. Would like to see more members and their ladies come to the meetings.

Want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Antique AutosHello, and welcome to a new year

in the Shrine and Antique Autos unit. 2015 was just as busy as any other year, with dinners, parades, and meetings.

Our Christmas party on the 5th of December was well attended. We met and ate a meal at Prairie Rose in Benton. Chuck wagon food and cowboy music was had by all.

I’d like to thank Noble Capt. Grant Richecky for his two years of service to this unit as Capt. He is one busy man as it turns out. Hope and pray you get that gold Cadillac back on the road someday.

In December we had elections for the ensuing year of 2016. We’d like to welcome our new Capt. Noble Dale Gibson and his lady Linda. He has been with the unit for several years but only recently, has agreed to be our Capt.

His officers include: Nobles Randy Edwards, Kent Butz, Mark Armfield, and Wayne Orr. We congratulate them all and wish them a great year in 2016.

Noble Larry Light and his lady Christy have presented quilts she made to the plain of mercy December 16, at the stated meeting. There were two tubs of handmade quilts to be given out to children being driven to the

Shrine Hospital in St. Louis, by our drivers.

In doing birthdays and anniversaries, I am using the list provided by our lieuten-ant. If there needs to be any corrections,

let us know. Birthdays for January incl: Nobles Ed

Chrisco, Bob Heibert, Chris Cushman, Dahl Carmichael. Ladies of Antique Autos birthdays are: Helen Saylor, Linda Cushman, Chrystal Light. Noble Rocky and Bev McWilliams have a January anniversary.

In the area of sickness and distress: Noble Bob Francis is having some tests run to check his balance and walking ability. Keep Noble Mike Boyle in your prayers as he continues treatment for cancer. Noble Randy had shoul-der surgery in 2015. Noble Gene Gordineer had a lung transplant. Thinking of Noble Lee and Lady Rosemary Hufford, who reside in assisted living now.

If I missed anybody, I’m sorry. Please take care of yourselves.

Winter time means preparing for old car storage, and making sure the rodents don’t eat up wiring and such.

Take care this winter in all you do. Keep the shiny side up and the rubber on the road.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! May this be the year that the Horse Patrol turns around and we can get more horses on the street.

Dec 10th we ventured to Parerie Rose Chuck Wagon Supper for a good show and a delightfull meal. Several of us went on a Wagon Ride pulled by two of the

most beautiful horses that we have seen in a long time.

Our next meeting Will be Janurary 14th. We will meet in the Oasis around 6:00pm for a little social and then we

will have our regular meeting around 7:00pm.

Until next time

Million Dollar Band RICK MILHON Reporter

What was that wooshing sound?! Oh, oh, it was 2015 zip-ping by like the Starship Enterprise. I was just starting to get comfortable with the old year and now it’s gone.

A glance through 2015 shows that the Million Dollar Band provided music in 34 concerts and two parades in spite of a year in which jobs and personal situ-ations made it difficult to put a band on a stage or parade trailer. Various Nobles had health issues. We are thankful for our musician friends who helped us make music. They are not listed here because the writer knows he would forget more than one.

January finds the Million Dollar Band preparing for the Installation of the 2016 Potentate and Divan on January 23. The Polkatz will play as Nobles and Ladies gather for the Stated Meeting on the 20th.

As the Topics Deadline approaches (in December) the Band plans to swing

into energetic rehearsals on Monday, January 4 with the

DanceKatz at 7pm and the Concert Band at 8:30pm. Those rehearsals continue weekly. On Tuesday,

January 5, the Polkatz will rehearse at 7:30pm and will rehearse on 1st and 3rd Tuesdays each month. The next week the Dixiekatz will return to the 2nd and 4th Thursday scheduled rehearsals at 7:30pm.

We rehearse so we can perform for people. Keep us in mind for your special event.

Mini-Cycles TAYLOR DURR Reporter

After a short intermission we are back in the topics. To kick off the year I guess we will list the chain of command for next year. The Captain will be Jimmy Decker, First Lieutenant will be Scott Ayres, Second Lieutenant will be Troy Ayres and our Circus Chair will be Jerry Clapp. The reporting will be done by Taylor Durr, the Secretary Treasurer is Jimmy Decker and our Membership Chair is Roger Smith. As we are always seeking entertainment we have created a new elected position within the unit this year. We are proud to announce that Fred Smith has been elected as our Historian. This positions responsibility is to bring a fun factual story to the meeting every month. Story must be related to shrine history, historian must have physical documentation tying the story to the Midian Shrine, and the story had to have taken place over 100 years ago. If the historian is unable to fulfill any of the following criteria, said individual is obligated to buy a round of camels milk for all attendees present at the meeting. Any and all parts of the story

or artifacts/ documentation will be reviewed and discussed by the

members of the unit for authenticity. Now that we have all the formal

announcements out of the way I would like to move on to something a little more

serious. Roger Smith has been a member of the Mini-Cycles for a number of years and is always looking for a way to give back to the organization. In this giving season Roger has extend an invitation to all members of the shrine family for an after holiday party at his home Super Bowl Sunday!! We are so excited about the party and Roger insisted on taking care of everything!! All you need to do is show up thirsty and hungry, Roger said he would have plenty to drink and eat for all!! As you can see we are excited and anxious for another fun and exciting year as members of the Midian Shrine. If you are looking for a unit to join or simply want to stop by for a historical story and some fellowship, come join us! We meet at the Midian the second Wednesday of every month at 7 ish.

Until we meet again!

ChefsAs others have said where did

2015 go? Illustrious Sir Wells had quite a year. The Chefs are proud to claim him as a member even is for basically one task only. He did so well as Potentate that maybe he will step up to the plate and become Executive Chef one of these years. He missed that on his way to the way to the top of Midian possibly because he hadn’t paid his dues on time.

Executive Chef Yohn led us to fire up the grills/stoves 8 times and apparently no one got sick from our efforts. From breakfast to full meals we tried to do our best. For the Sportsman Event we began to think we were all either hamburgers or hot dogs, but we did keep up and didn’t run out.

Our final event was the Veterans Appreciation and New Nobles party. The old G I ability to accomplish the job needed really came through thanks to the Veterans in the Chef’s. When we started to prepare the meal, we found that the 6 burner Stove in Median’s Kitchen didn’t work at all as the gas had been turned off.

some electric roasters from Jerry Guthrie and Rick Mitchell

dinner was able to be served on time. We also found out what is important to Midian as we have been told the Stove will be

working for the Potentate’s breakfast in January. Apparently Midian leadership thinks of Veterans as the US Congress does.

They gave their time and service ----- So What!

Our December meeting was short and sweet, as neither our Liaison nor the Lustrous Sir was there. We did elect new officers for the 2016 Shrine Year.

Mike Snively - Executive Chef; Larry Wilson - Sous Chef; Secretary - Bob Herman; Treasurer and Membership - Myron Frick; Circus Chairman - Mike Bennett; Chief Busy Body - Mark Cox.

I’m quite sure this group will lead us onward and upward.

Until next time---------Make-IT Smoke boys-------It’ll taste great when we serve it up!

Keystone Kops “MOON”Reporter

Happy New Year to everyone! We are about to take the magic carpet ride into 2016 with our leader Chief Danny Oliver with the first Lady of the Kops, Norma! Better get ready to “cut loose” because Danny and Norma sure know how to do that! We as the one and only Gold Whistle Midian Keystone Kops wish you the best of luck in 2016 Danny Oliver because you are going to need it to live up to our high expectations and standards to obtain that Gold Whistle status. I have seen you climb a tree and catch a bass but never have the stakes been so high. So Danny get yourself ready to run the best Keystone Kop unit in the world my friend!

The rest of our 2016 Kop Board consists of Captain Scott Shirkey, Lady Nicki; Lieutenant Howard Brooks, Lady Becky; Sergeant Rick Brown, Lady Shawn; and Board Member at Large Gabe Keplar, Lady Kim. The Treasurer is none other than the Moon man, Steve Mitchell, Lady Sue. I predict it will be a great year for our unit and we will “rock the house” all year long.

Our Christmas party is over and we are licking our wounds, but we’ll recover and “party on dude!” It was a very nice party. We had a fantastic social hour, followed by a delicious meal, and then Santa made his usual stop and handed out gifts galore. Santa and his helper were given a beautiful plant by our Liasion Bart Ogden and his Lady Lesa. Santa looked real “happy!” I am not so sure he hadn’t stopped somewhere before our party and had a little egg nog, you know what I mean. But he was a jolly ole fat man that night for sure! Following that our 2015 Gold Whistle Chief Scotty Clark with his Lady Charlene handed out the Pappy Coons and Carol Coons Awards to Scott Shirkey and Nicki Shirkey. Congratulations you two for winning this

prestigious award for 2015! From there we danced and sang

the night away with DJ Kent “Hops n” Barley! Thanks to Kopper Jackie Broyles for the job he did getting

the party done! We will be back Best Western North in 2016 so look out!

Now with a heavy heart I wish to acknowledge the passing of my longtime friend and fellow Shriner and fellow Topics writer Randy “Downtown” “Out of Town” Brown. He was a dear friend to many of you out there and we all have our favorite memories of him. He was a longtime mu-sette player for the number one in the world Midian Oriental Band. He attended all the CSSA’s that I ever went to until 2015. Playing his heart out for what he loved, the Shrine! Men like him come into your life on rare occasions and he touched so many of us. He is only the second man I have ever met in the Shrine that I put on a pedestal as an icon of what a true Shriner is! We sparred in the Topics good naturedly about the Kops and the OB. It was a privilege for me to do so. Together we would talk about our favorite beverages. Some of his were mine also, I mean Absolutely they were! He was just an easy man to talk to. He was the bond between the OB and the Koppers and you could tell he held our unit in high regards. Well Randy Brown, we will meet again someday, if I am so lucky, and we talk again about whatever we want! You will forever be a piece of Midian Shrine’s most admired and iconic crowd who have passed through our Shrine doors and touched our hearts! Rest In Peace my friend!!

I Wonder?? Was there ever a man as big as Randy Brown?? I Wonder?? Will you be lucky enough to someday sit down again with Randy Brown?? I Wonder?? What will 2016 bring to all of us?? I Wonder??

Cartoon JOHN GRACYReporter

Would you look at that? It’s already December. Wow! Can you believe it? It’s amazing how fast the time has gone. And if I know anything about the way calendars and time work, well heck, I’ll bet it’ll be 2016 by the next time we talk! Way off in the future. Incredible! I hope we have flying cars..... but I digress. Greetings from Toon Town members, Ladies, Nobles and friends! I hope you are all having a wonderful holiday season so far.

We’ve hit that time of year when not a lot of things are happening. Which is okay. It’s nice to have a respite from the hectic parade and charity schedule. Thank you to everyone who came out for the Arkalala parade to bear witness to the triumphant return of our newly restored faithful tractor. Also, a big thank you to everyone who came up to the Fez-tival of Trees to assist with the photo booth. Our very own Mike “Scooby” Ward made the transformation to Santa for the A.M. shift, and let me tell ya, he knows how to put the jolly in Jolly Old Saint Nick. I think we even had some notable adults who were arguably more excited to see Santa than the kids were. Pictures speak a thousand words. Special thanks to Noble Richard Mardis for cover-ing the P.M. shift, and Lady Linda Gibson

for another stellar performance as Mrs. Claus.

The most notable, and equally memorable event from the past month is obviously Fall Ceremonial. Welcome

all new nobles and ladies. I hope you had a... memorable experience. Our own ladies did an awesome job on our After Glow table, like always. Thank you for being the glue that holds our big family together.

We did get 3 new members in November! A great big welcome to Noble Doug Bogart and his Lady Earlene, Noble Kade Krenke and his Lady Cristyl, and brand-spankin-new Noble Cary Heiserman and his Lady Lisa!! So glad to have you all.

Upcoming we have a Cartoon Christmas dinner planned, so keep your eyes open on Facebook and email for all the necessary details. If you aren’t a member and would like to know more, or if you’d like info for book-ing a character for a birthday party, or if you have some weird fascination with grown men in fur, you can email us at [email protected], find us on Facebook, or come to a meeting. We meet the 2nd Thursday of every month at 6:30pm in the Isis room. Until next year, Merry Christmas, and That’s All Folks!!!!!

Electraglide Elite N. B. FORREST, N. G. C. Reporter

As you read this the Christmas and New Year’s Holidays are behind us and we’re launching into 2016 with a terrific 2015 under our belts! We certainly need to thank our Past Captain Steve and his Lady Sue again for all they did for us over these last two years including the get together for the ladies gift exchange at their place mid-December. We thank them too for the Christmas gifts they brought us at Christmas Party. The Unit patches are very cool and may have just started a tradition for the EE you never know. Just simply a great job and lots of work. Now they can sit back and “enjoy the ride” as Captain Robert and Lady Janice take the wheel going forward.

We were blessed to have Illustrious Sir Wayne Wells and Lady Terri, the Chief Rabban Bart Ogden and Lady Lesa, our Liaison and Oriental Guide Jay Danler and Lady Tracy and Trustee Lynn Ungles and Lady Lauri at our Holiday shin-dig too. The Pote installed our new Unit Officers and wished us all good luck and success with the new Leadership Team. It sounds to this reporter like plans are already underway for Unit rides and activities that make the Electraglide Elite the strong Unit it is, and the donations that the EE and its Ladies made at the December Stated Meeting demonstrated

to everyone how serious we are about our philanthropy! The old

adage of “actions speak louder than words” fits pretty well to describe the effort and support the EE provides for

our cause – “it’s all about the kids” as Past Captain Steve would say.

Our Treasurer Jeff Preston reminds us that we need to get our 2016 dues ($25.00) to him as soon as possible. Five dollars of the twenty-five goes to Central States Motor Corps dues which needs to be turned in right away now. Also, Circus is out just ahead and you should be receiving Nobility Tickets in the mail sometime soon. Our Circus Chairman, Past Captain Steve, will keep us informed as the April event gets a bit closer. Not only the dates have changed from February to April, but you may remember too that Circus will be at the Intrust Arena downtown for the 2016 event. More working space and certainly more seating available so we’ll need to get busy selling Circus! A final reminder of the Annual Stated Meeting on January 20, 2016 has among other important topics – election of Midian Officers. Captain Robert encourages all make it that can. Be safe as Winter officially sits in and we’ll all get together on Friday January 8 for our first meeting of the new Year!

Arab PatrolI am very sorry about not having

a report in the December Topics. It was done during the Fez-tival of Trees and sent it the next day. Or so I thought. I found out later that I forgot to attach the file so this will be a double feature. Here’s what I reported but forgot to send.

The black camel paid a visit to the Arab Patrol once again as Veteran Patrolman Wayne Payne from Fredonia pass away this past October. He was the father-in-law of another Veteran Patrolman, John Burke. The Arab Patrol extends condolences, thoughts and prayers to the family for their loss.

Seen at the October Fest were Captain Kyle Rhorer, Past Captain Dick Simpson, Oriental Guide Jay Danler and their Ladies. Since Lady Jackie and I are executive aides, we were busy preparing and serving the Brats and trimmings. I missed the Halloween party (the first one since becoming a Shriner) but understand a few of you attended and had fun.

The weather turned out very nice for the Arkalalah Parade in Arkansas City. Since it was rather cool during the parade line-up, the parade uniform included the yellow windbreaker jacket. About the time Midian entered the parade, it started to warm up considerably and there was no time to ditch the jackets so off we went. Needless to say, it got pretty warm by the end of the parade.

The following weekend was the start of the Fall Ceremonial with the Pre-glow attended by Captain Kyle Rhorer with Lady Jo, First Lieutenant Larry Tomes with Lady Michelle, Second Lieutenant Steve Travis with Lady Aubrey, Oriental Guide Jay Danler with Lady Tracy and me with Lady Jackie. The Patrol had a pretty good turnout the next day for Fall Ceremonial with help from Veteran Patrolmen Ron Smith for the Honor Guard and Loyd Geist for the parade. Thanks, guys!

I understand there was a little mishap in preparing for the 50 States Flag display to conclude the Arch Ceremony. After Sergeant Devon Olson made his round telling everyone to watch out for the chandelier, he appar-ently got his own flag entangled in the crystal chandelier, earning him the title of Sergeant “Ding-a-Ling”. He now belongs to an elite group of Patrolmen that display their Esprit de Faux Pas, whose members include Captain “Stab It” (Brian West) and Captain “Nemo” (me). I was just thinking, does anyone have any idea of a title befitting Past Captain Dick Simpson’s apparent lack of sense of direction? While we earned the title for our one little blunder, he did it twice and in the presence of a much larger audience.

Captain Kyle Rhorer would like to thank everyone that helped out or supplied the snacks for the After-Glow at the Best Western.

A few patrolmen and ladies attended Midian’s First Annual Fez-tival of Trees. Lady Jo Rhorer, Lady Dottie Stevenson, Past Captain Dick Simpson and Lady Anita. Lady Jo’s daughter won the Arab Patrol “Americana” tree. Larry Tomes and I with our Ladies were there as Executive Aides working the event.

That is what was missing in the December Topics and it has been pretty quiet since then. The new Nobles/Veteran’s function was held the weekend following the Fez-tival of Trees. In attendance from the Patrol were Veteran Patrolman Rick Mitchell and myself, work-ing with the Midian Chef unit preparing and serving the dinner meal, consisting of Swiss Steak and SOS. That same day, I was also voted Treasurer of the Kansas Shrine Bowl.

It sounded like everyone had a wonderful

and Happy Thanksgiving and enjoyed Black Friday (unless you

and/or your Lady went out shopping Thursday evening). On Saturday, quite a few Patrolmen with their ladies and

guests took a break from shopping to brave the cold and damp weather and attended the Christmas Express at the Orpheum Theater. Like last year, many of us met at the River City Brewery for dinner before the show. I can’t speak for everyone else but Jackie and I thoroughly enjoyed the company, dinner and show.

On December 4th, I was playing golf with Past Captain Bill Stevenson and Veteran Bill Ewertt at Sim Golf Course. Any of you that have played with Bill Ewertt at Sim Golf Course have undoubtedly heard about his hole-in-one on number 15. Well, be prepared to hear about for another great shot he made…. an eagle on number 16 with an elevated green. Congratulations, Bill. That reminds me of another person needing congratulations and that is Brian West for bowling a perfect 300 at Northrock Lanes. Way to go!

Over 50 Patrolmen, Ladies, and guests attended the Patrol Christmas Party. Hank the Mechanic served as DJ for the fun filled evening that included Past Captain Mike Staats having the winning time for Captain Kyle’s speech. Veteran Patrolman Loyd Geist was presented with a special gift, a new pair of shoes to replace the pair he blew out during CSSA Competition last year. Patrolmen pitched in and presented Captain Kyle with a Traeger Smoker. The highlight of the evening was when the owner of College Hill Deli, who catered the meal, presented Illustrious Sir Wayne Wells with a check for $500 for the Plane of Mercy. A first this year was the White Elephant gift exchange that was fun but, in my opinion, a little too time consuming. As in the past, when the party ended and cleanup completed, there was one final get together at the Village Pantry on West Central Avenue and Ridge for breakfast before heading home. There were about twenty of us there this year. Maybe more of you will join us next year.

There were a few that missed the Christmas party due to some unfortunate incidents as well as weather. The Patrol extends their thoughts and prayers to Veteran Jerry Stein and Lady Joann McCandless during their recovery. The Patrol would also like to congratulate Veteran Don Lank and Lady Alberta on their 65th Wedding Anniversary. Captain Kyle Rhorer has sure given the Arab Patrol visibility to the rest of the Midian Membership this year. He was the first Patrolman selected as the Shriner of the Month, followed by 1st Lieutenant Larry Tomes a couple months later. I became the third Patrolman to selected as Shriner of the Month at December Stated meeting. Captain Kyle Rhorer hoped you had a Happy New Year and looks forward to working with you and having a great year in 2016.. Until next time, keep in step!

Hillbilly Band JOHN HECKMANReporter

No wonder we’re a bit frayed around the edges; Music Director Noble Al Brumbaugh reports that last year we performed at four parades, four special events, eight (more or less) rehearsals and twenty-five “regular” appearances. “Specials” included being invited to provide overture and social hour music for the Sweet Adeline’s annual concert; once again being the opening act for the Sedgwick Fall Festival Concert in the Park; and for the third year in a row asked to headline the Harvey County United Fund kick-off party and Chile Contest. We’re honored to have been chosen again as the opening act for the Newton Presbyterian Manor’s annual Apple Blossom Festival.

As many of our musicians also perform with other Shrine and “civilian” musical groups the schedule was a demanding one, but worth it. At Midian’s annual open pre-sentation meeting, Business Manager Noble

John Heckman was almost alone as he presented checks totaling a thousand dollars for the Plane of Mercy and St. Louis Hospital

funds! Almost, as our Liaison Officer Noble Steve Julian stepped up to help....because the rest of the group was playing a job! At the risk of “tooting our own horn(s), perhaps that’s not too bad for a group that has at the most twelve active members!

Our sincere thanks to those many “other” musicians and supporters who helped us keep our commitments during a most hectic but rewarding year; we’ll honor them and our “core” players next column! For now we’ll just wish all a happy and prosperous New Year, and be aware, our little group already has three gigs and a parade lined up for this year!

Oriental BandGreat month for parties and

man the Oriental Band had a great one. Nearly all Band members made it out at the Candle Club and our Host/Director showed why he has been a party animal for… well let’s just say he is getting older. Illustrious Sir Wayne Wells got his 30 year pin while Hank Wright got his 25. Not far behind came Bill Argyle with his 20, it is the knowledge of men like these that make the Band what it is today. Noble Carole Dando was given the high honor of Bandsman of the Year.

Had election of officers this month and the only real change was one of our younger members becoming the Assistant Director for next year so we want to thank Noble Derick Hutchinson for stepping up to the plate. Noble Doug Stubbs will be Director again and someone said they would take him under their wing and try to teach him the music, good luck with that Mike. Noble Bill Bailey was elected the Chief Mandarin and looks like we are going to try to have 3 of them in

various states next year. We are saddened to hear the Black Camel

visited Noble Randy Brown please kept his family in our prayers.

Both the Unit and the Mandarin Degree gave a ton of money to the vari-

ous funds at the Temple this month which is always good.

Installation of Officers is this month and we need to all get to the meeting to support our new officers for next year.

Last but not least for sure the OB is going to do our world famous Valentine’s Day Steak feed at the Temple on Feb 13th, steaks will be cooked to order with Jackie’s garlic salad, cheesy corn, and baked potatoes. Cost will be 25.00 per person with tickets available at the counter at Midian Temple. There will be a limited amount of tickets available so please buy them early. If you have attended any of our other Valentine’s Day feeds you know how special this is and Noble Bill Johnson as a waiter is a site to see.

Captain CY Lampe led the December meeting at the Marquee Motors. The meeting was well attended. Thanks to Captain CY for getting the BBQ. Thanks to Nobel Jeff Breault for providing the venue for a great bunch of Shriners and wonderful fellowship.

The Motor Patrol Christmas Party was at the Rolling Hills Country club. Captain CY presented gifts to the Nobles and their ladies. Some of those attending (sometimes I miss people) were PP John Auch (lady Julie), Nobles Terry Henry (lady Jill), Mickey West (lady Donna Unrein), Bob Murdock (lady Patty), PP Ron Capps (lady Bonnie), Dave Johnson (lady Bev Thornton), Trustee Lynn Ungles (lady Laurie), Paul Mayfield (lady Rebecca), Bob Ragsdale, Ron Stowell (princess Amy), Jeff Breault (lady Michelle), Bob Ragsdale, Roland Belcher, Jerod Cox (lady Arian), Bruce Detwiler (lady Teresa), Richard Darge (lady Shirley), Craig Stanton (lady Nancy), OG Jay Danler (lady Tracy), AR Rocky McWilliams (lady Bev), me (Lady Debbie) and Captain Cy Lampe. Captain CY Lampe presented top Jeepster point awards from CSSA to Nobles Terry Henry, Bob Ragsdale, and Jeff Breault. Captain CY presented plaques of appreciation to Lady Donna Unrein and will get one to Lady Jess Parker for the support and work they did for the Motor Patrol events. He passed out circus awards to Nobles Bob Murdock, Lynn Ungles, Robert Ragsdale and yours truly.

Then he presented Motor Patrolman of the year to Noble Mickey West.

In coming officers were installed by Oriental Guide Jay Dandler and will be Captain Noble Mickey (fun) West, John Auch Adjutant, Terry Henry 1st Lt., Paul Mayfield 2nd Lt., Robert Ragsdale Quartermaster and Noble Lynn Ungles Treasurer. I presented Normie awards as I do annually for over and under achievement in the unit that has been covered in my Topics articles or alluded to for the sake of brevity. We had a lot of innovation this year by the Captain. Thank you CY. It was good to have the three amigos (West, Mayfield and Henry) show up at most of the parades. A special thanks to Lady Donna Unrein and Lady Beverly Thornton for attending the party this year. We want to see MP Widows more than once a year. Like times when we go to Arkalalah and make stops at three American Legion posts on the way down. Thanks again for the Motor Patrol ladies who helped with the ‘Feztival’ of Trees. We were sorry to hear of the passing of Noble Loren Wormington’s mother and his brother in law within a matter of a few days. But we were happy to hear our own Ole Dave Johnson was a great grandfather again the day before the Christmas party for the 17 time or so. Who counts after a dozen grandkids? Oh grandparents count. Motor Patrol is A unit of Wild and crazy guys. Jeepster pictures and History of our activities are found on the www.motorpatrol.us website and our Facebook page.

Motor Patrol NORM CONLEYReporter Golden VIPs

Midian’s Golden VIP’s Monthly Meeting was held at the Kansas Masonic Home, Thursday, December 10, 2015. There were 22 persons in attendance which included two guests, Merle and Dora Jean McCullaugh.

Meeting was called to order by President David Pate, PP at 11:50 noon after a social time at 11:30 am. The pledge of allegiance was led by Noble Bill Weber and the invocation was given by Joan Harris.

After a meal, our guests were introduced for our program. The main speaker was Dora Jean. She makes dolls from scratch including their clothing that represents the era of the doll she is making at the time. As Dora Jean stated, “Art is in the eye of the beholder”. Dora Jean has traveled from Colorado to Tennessee and other states in the proximity while displaying and selling the dolls she makes at her home in southwest Wichita. She begins with a ball of aluminum foil while wrapping a Polymer-Clay substance around the ball as she slowly begins shaping the face. There are never two faces alike. She does order the eyes from a manu-facturer in China. The clothing is sought from the various antique shops as they travel. She tries to find and use only truly antique material; bedding, clothing and any other material that is suitable for the dolls. Once the face and hands are completed, she uses rubbing alcohol on a cot-

ton ball to smooth out the wrinkles and scratches and then she will bake

them in an oven for about 30 minutes at a low temperature, this hardens the clay. She has two tools, but not specific for her

shaping the items, rather that she uses to help shape the clay pieces, one that was purchased and another that was hand made for her by her husband, Merle. The McCullaugh’s were presented with a much sought after and very valuable Coffee Mug for their time, presentation and display of the dolls.

Merle and Dora Jean were presented with a much sought after and very valuable Coffey mug.

Noble Bill Weber also presented Noble Art Van Dresser with a “Thanks for all your help” Golden VIP Coffey Mug as well as Patsy & David Pate, PP. All were surprised with the presentation!

Noble Art Van Dresser gave the Treasurer’s Report indicating that the VIP’s are solvent and all bills are paid.

Noble Jerry McDaniel is reported as ill this day. Nothing serious thankfully.

Birthdays for December include: Lady Sharon Geist, December 4th and Lady Joan Harris, December 26th.

There being nothing added for the good of the order, the benediction was delivered by Lady Pat Pate.

Arami Court JAN HIEBERTReporter

The holidays were a busy time for the Ladies of Arami Court. About 40 Ladies and Nobles attended our Christmas social on December 13 at Stroud’s. Lots of conversation, laughter and good food!

The Pecan sale has gone very well. We still have about 21 packages of new crop pecans left. Call us if you need some. Thank you to everyone who made a purchase. If we do it again we’ll have to order more of the cinnamon coated and chocolate covered!

As always the kids Christmas party at WSR was fun. We were pleased to provide the “make it and take it” area. The Kandyland Klowns had a great time doing face painting. It’s is so gratifying to see the smiles on the children and to see how some of them have

grown over the years. It was our pleasure to attend the

December 16 Midian stated meeting and make our Court’s annual donations to the Plane of Mercy, the building fund

and the “new legs fund’. Several of our units also made donations.

Our Court will be DARK in January. Instead of holding a stated meeting, we will hold an initiation ceremony for several ladies on January 9. The ceremonial will begin at 11:00am, followed by a carry-in lunch. Trailers and Nobles of the new initiates are invited to join us for lunch. A practice will be held that morning at 8:00am.

Until next time, we will be letting our “beacons of light” shine.

Shriner of the MonthCongratulations to Larry Wilson

Shriner of the Month for November!
