Last Friday afternoon, one of our young students was seriously injured in a traffic accident in the centre of Coffs Harbour. It was one of those freakish accidents that we just don’t think will happen to our children.

We are delighted that young Annabel is continuing to make a strong recovery at John Hunter hospital, where she was airlifted to last Friday night.

During the week, Mrs Lisle and I have kept in touch with her parents, and have passed updates to staff and students. By Tuesday afternoon, the magic of smart phones allowed Annabel to speak to her classmates face-to-face.

Her parents gained much comfort from the great support offered to them in their time of great anxiety last week. I am very grateful for the support our teachers offered our young students and one another in those very anxious few days.

I was walking along Harbour Drive when the accident happened last week. The car that hit Annabel was travelling more slowly than the cars that travel around our campus at school.

Seeing how easily a serious traffic accident can happen makes our specific rules for dropping off and picking up children at the College all the more pertinent. Please be mindful of our regulations. Pay attention to the traffic marshals, and do not attempt to pick up your children from the top car park after school.

Frustration fueled by a lack of consideration for other drivers only serves to heighten the risk to our children in the busy pick-up times each afternoon.

Please use the correct pick-up zone. Your children have been told repeatedly at assemblies that this is our expectation.

This week at Bishop Druitt College I would like to share with you and focus on the Two Great Commandments, as we reflect upon the blessing of the gracious gift that God has provided for each one of us in this Christian College. Bishop Druitt College is a large Ministry Unit in the Anglican Church of Australia in the Diocese of Grafton.

The Two Great Commandments that Anglicans reflect upon before confession are “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind and with all your strength. ‘Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. reconciliation activities

We have a busy end of term in our midst, so I would like to make everyone aware of the events and happenings between now and the holiday period. Next week is already shortened due to the Queen’s Birthday long weekend and the Secondary school will participate in their Athletics Carnival on Friday 14 June. On this day, if any Year 11 & 12 students have assessment tasks due on Monday 17 June, you will need a doctor’s certificate to verify your absence. This is a NSW Board of Studies requirement. We encourage full participation from our students at these College carnivals to foster and support the House spirit.

College photos will take place on Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 June, so please ensure that your children have the necessary uniform requirements. Year 12 students will not be allowed to wear their commemorative jackets for the formal photos on these days.

Year 11 & 12 Parent Teacher Interviews take place on Thursday 13 June from 4:00-8:00pm. These are important conversations to have with teachers regarding progress and goals for the start of Semester 2. I have written to all families of Years 11 & 12 regarding schoolwork for the holidays. Year 12 students must keep the routine of work across these three weeks, as the cause of doing nothing will be felt when HSC results are received. If you wish to discuss anything I have written in these letters, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Foundation Day takes place on the last day of term on Friday 21 June. This is a wonderful day of celebration that acknowledges the hard work of many people in establishing our wonderful school. It will also celebrate the official opening of our new Branson Centre. Mr Victor Branson, the foundation Principal will be here to open the new centre on Foundation Day at an assembly that will commence at 10am. You are all most welcome to attend this celebration.

Year 8 students have completed a painted portrait in honour of the NSW Archibald Prize. The students could do a self-portrait or a portrait of a peer. The art works are currently being exhibited in the Visual Arts foyer and everyone is invited to view the works and contribute to the People’s Choice Award. The Visual Arts staff and Year 8 Coordinator traditionally decide on the winner and highly commended works. Watch this space for the exciting results!

National Reconciliation week is celebrated across Australia each year between 27 May and 3 June. These dates are very important, as two significant reconciliation milestones were achieved: The anniversaries of the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision. As a part of Reconciliation week, eleven Bishop Druitt College students designed and painted art for two didgeridoos to present to the school. The students had a fantastic day and produced two beautifully designed didgeridoos.

Karin LisleAssistant Principal (Head of Primary)

from the head of primaryLast Friday as I dropped some students home from school I wished them a great weekend, not realising that one of our little girls had been involved in an accident. What started off as a carefree weekend ended for a lot of us with concerns for Annabel’s health and recovery and I am sure many of you were waiting as anxiously as me to hear that she would be OK.

The medical staff at Coffs Base Hospital should be given a pat on the back for the care of this feisty little girl, and we should all give the Westpac Helicopter a donation for the quick response to flying Annabel to John Hunter Hospital. It is times like these that we see the goodness in people, how everyone has rallied around the family to give them our love and support at this difficult time.

The good news is that Annabel is making a speedy recovery, her friends in 2D and her teacher, Mrs Lynne Davis, have sent her cards and videos of themselves, and spoken to her via Facetime (isn’t technology just amazing?) It is also time to reflect on our precious young ones and how life can change in a split second.

Roads and vehicles are an everyday part of life for all of us. Either as a driver, a passenger, or as a pedestrian, we all must negotiate the road traffic environment on a daily basis. Children are especially vulnerable around vehicles and roads due to their size and capabilities.

This weekend might be a good opportunity to teach children to become safer road-users. For instance:Walk down to the local shop for groceries or the newspaper with your children when you can. If your child is under 8 years old, • insist on holding their hand when walking across the road.Park the car and walk around to the sports ground, on the way explaining the observations and choices you make to get there • safely.Talk about the importance of wearing seat belts and insist that everyone in the vehicle wears appropriate restraints for their age • and size.Point out rules of the road when driving.• Always demonstrate responsible and safe behaviours when driving, as a passenger or while walking anywhere around vehicles • and roads.

Remember children learn good habits by modelling behaviour from adults.

I hope you all have a restful long weekend and stay safe.

Byot BlogThis week’s website spotlight is from Mike Colless, Head of Information Services at the College. He continually assists the students in preparing and organising for assignments, presentations and exams at the College. His progressive knowledge of ICT enables our students to have a great understanding of what is available to them at the click of a button, or touch of a screen.

Website of the Week – BDC Library Presentation Tools - http://www.bdc.nsw.edu.au/presentation-tools

Online presentation tools offer students a convenient way to create engaging assignment presentations, from slideshows, concept maps, and graphical displays to dynamic posters and movies. All the tools students require to create their presentations and the products they create are stored on the web, accessible from any computer with web access. Students can easily collaborate on tasks when required, share them with others and present them in class.

To help students navigate the proliferation of presentation tool sites on the web the Library has added the Presentation Tools page to the Assignment Assistance section of the Library and Information Services website. The new page features a selection of useful presentation tool websites that are well worth exploring. Students will need to create a free account that will give them access to the basic tools they will need to let their creativity soar. Check out favourites like Prezi and the infographics tool Infogram that enables students to create charts and graphs from their own data and present information in a wide range of graphical formats.

grade of the week - kindergartenKJ have been leaning about 2D and 3D shapes. We have also been learning about the weather. We have created these interesting pictures using the shapes we are learning about in class. We have also added sun and rain to our pictures as this is the type of weather we see in Coffs Harbour during Autumn.

Last week Kindy got to meet their Year 6 buddies. It was super exciting. We drew each other’s portraits and we also showed them our PJs and our teddies. We love our buddies!

The Mid North Coast Primary Rugby 12-a-side Competition was held in Kempsey last week and our boys played in a Gala Day format for the Mid North Coast Championships. After a slow start and losing the first game, the boys training kicked in and they started to put some great running and passing moves together to win their second match. The third match was a really tough game, which had our boys gallantly defending their line for 5 or 6 phases of play. In the end they couldn’t hold out and lost narrowly. The boys played extremely well on the day and finished in 4th place. Thank you very much to Howard Winchester who stepped in to coach for the day in the absence of Mr Oxley and Mr Lang.

It was another great night for Friday Night Rugby again last week with another fantastic turn out by BDC players. It was great to see the 8’s get split into two divisions where the players that played last year moved on to tackling, and the new players stayed with two handed touch. There was some great running and tackling by our mighty 8’s and I think everyone enjoyed both games. We have a break from rugby this week due to the long weekend but will start again next Friday, Week 7.

Trinity Grammar Primary students arrive at BDC on Tuesday 18 June after school, to stay for two nights, and play football on Wednesday afternoon and Rugby on Thursday morning before they leave to head down to Newcastle. I am still in urgent need of families who would be prepared to billet 2 boys for those nights. Anyone who is interested please contact Mr Webber.

The U15s and Opens Rugby League teams travelled to Sydney to play in the CIS cup competitions in Sydney. Both teams played exceptionally well and won all their games to progress to the next round, which will be played again in Sydney in Term 3. The boys also got the opportunity to watch the State of Origin on Wednesday night, and see our Mighty Blues beat those Queenslanders! It was a great experience for all the boys and a big thank you must go to Paul Driscoll who organised and coordinated this fabulous trip.

Primary Athletics Carnival is on at BDC today (7 June) and the Secondary carnival is on at BCU stadium, Friday 14 June. There will be some extra trials next week for those Secondary students who may have missed a trial for an event they would like to compete in. Please listen for student notices or come and see Mr Webber to nominate for an event. Qualifying lists for all students and events will be posted up at the old PE staff room and the sports administration office. Students must check these lists next week.

Just a reminder about the Earn & Learn program, you can collect points when shopping at Woolworths. Thanks for you continued support. The collection period finishes on 9 June. We will start the tally and advise you as soon as possible of the total of your generosity and the equipment we will be able to purchase for your children. Thanks again!

The Australian Girls’ Choir is touring our region at the beginning of Term 3, 2013. This outstanding vocal group will be arriving in Coffs Harbour late afternoon on Sunday 14 July and departing for Newcastle on the morning of Wednesday 17 July.

There are 56 visitors requiring billet accommodation. At present, we have 26 children that have gratefully been placed. Thank you to those who have already nominated to host these girls. We will be in contact soon with your information.

However, this means we need 15 more families from our community to assist with billeting girls in pairs for 3 nights. Please contact Mrs Stuart, myself, or the Music Office if you can assist with billeting.

The Music Department is planning a String Soiree on the evening of Thursday 20 June. The evening will commence at 6pm, expected to conclude at 7:30pm with tea and coffee served after the performances. This is a great dress rehearsal for the students who have upcoming AMEB exams and to showcase the students’ progress this year. Information letters will be sent home shortly.

Thank you to My-Lan Holland and Micaela Adendorff for their performances at assembly this week.

The Bishop Druitt College Parents and Friends Association is an organisation that supports the aims and objectives of the College. It does so through the promotion of fundraising, fellowship, friendship and fun.

Loss and grief are issues that affect all of us at some stage in our lives. Learning to deal effectively with these ideas is central to personal wellbeing and happiness. Unresolved grief can also affect a student’s learning. Bishop Druitt College is offering an Australian education program called Seasons for Growth, which supports participants who have experienced change in their family because of a death, separation or divorce, or any other significant change. The program explores issues such as change, loss, managing feelings, coping strategies and support networks. Seasons for Growth is an eight-session program, which concludes with an additional “Celebration” session. Following the conclusion of the program each group will have the opportunity to meet on further occasions to discuss issues arising from the program.

In Term 3, we would like to continue to offer the program to students in our school. Trained staff will facilitate the groups. If you think your son or daughter would benefit from Seasons for Growth we would encourage you to talk to him/her about this. Should he/she decide to participate please contact your child’s teacher or Coordinator by Tuesday June 11. At the beginning of Term 3 you will be contacted with more information about the program and an invitation to a Parent Information session.

Bishop Druitt College is pleased to be able to offer this important program and we are confident that it will be a valuable learning experience for those who request to be involved. If you would like to discuss any aspect of this program please call Jane Mosco.

Please note that preference will be given to students who have not participated in the program previously. Due to high demand, places will be allocated based on the date on which they are returned to Primary or secondary offices at the College.

It has been an exciting week at OSHC. This week the OSHC children discovered a new use for the pool noodles. They created their own game called Noodle Wars and we can’t wait to play this again next week. We also had a fashion walk on Tuesday afternoon with Michaela, Keisha and Mikayla organising and showing off their new gowns on the runway. Later we headed down to the oval and had football games with Rachel.

Next week OSHC will be doing a little bit of painting using the water colour paints and using recycled items to make wonderful masterpieces. We will also be spending some time down on the oval playing ball games and playing in the Playground. The Vacation Care program for June and July is out now, a reminder that booking is essential as places are limited. Please notify Mariellos on 0266517400 or send an email to [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you at OSHC soon.

A reminder that the current Buy A Brick appeal for the Branson Centre closes Friday 21 June, 2013. Information and forms are available on the BDC website via this link.
