As a rugby tragic, watching the Wallabies limp from game to game on their spring tour is frustrating. When the head coach has to discipline nine of these highly paid athletes because they cannot follow simple team protocols relating to alcohol and a curfew, their languid gait seems easily explained.

Discipline is clearly lacking amid that team and there is now a demonstrable action to reinstate it. Discipline will bring focus and efficacy in the way that team operates. It follows that the Wallabies will then start to achieve a more consistent winning pattern. A rhetorical question would be to ask when the last All Black was suspended from the starting team because of an alcohol or curfew infraction.

Discipline is just as important at the school level. When we speak of discipline, we mean much more than simply how a child behaves. Focus on study; engaging in the classroom; preparation; taking physical activity; getting enough sleep; and healthy eating are just some of the ways discipline can have a positive impact on a student’s performance at school.

If students reflect on their end-of-year report cards with a view to improving or maintaining their performance and achievements next year, the notion of a broadly disciplined approach to life and study is the best way to ensure success. Encouraging discipline in our children has particular relevance in their Generation Y (Millennials) world. It will provide them with a habit that will define them among their peers.

We adults will benefit from some of the same discipline in our lives.

We were very pleased to hear that the Anglican Diocese of Grafton has appointed its new Bishop. from the head of secondaryHAtSFrom the beginning of 2014 it will be compulsory for all students K-12 to wear the new college hat while outdoors. It is important that students become sun safe and sun aware in our Australian climate. During break times students will be required to wear their hats at all times outdoors. Your support in giving the sun smart message would be appreciated in the new year. The new hat can be purchased at the uniform shop.

PreSentAtion CeremonyAs I have mentioned in past newsletters, the presentation ceremony at the end of the year will be here at BDC on Tuesday 3 December commencing at 12:45pm. The dress code for students at this ceremony will be as follows. Students who are receiving awards (they will be notified), must wear their white shirts and ties. When they move to the stage to receive their award they must put their blazer on. Students in the audience and not receiving awards can wear their summer uniform. There is no air conditioning in the Branson Centre so we aim to make it as comfortable as possible for all students.

In week 9 of term, the following program will take place:

Monday 2 DecemberDay 8 of the timetablePresentation Ceremony rehearsal 9am-12:00pm

Tuesday 3 DecemberPresentation Ceremony 12:45pm

Enjoy your week.

As we celebrate in the waiting and in the expectation of the Christ Child that was born on that very first Advent may we realise the priceless gift that God has given to us, His son Jesus Christ! That we might share God’s gift with others and be a bright burning light for all to see. As one child said recently “Wouldn’t it be great if we shone so brightly like candles on Jesus birthday cake so that all the world could see? It’s worth thinking about! Isn’t it? I wonder how brightly your light will shine this Christmas?

Date Claimer: You are invited to attend the Council for Churches Christmas Bowl Appeal Launch at St Augustine’s Catholic Church 29 November 2013 at 7 p.m.

Bonnie’s triptych consisted of 3 portrait paintings - her mother, grandmother and self-portrait. All were exquisite works. Every year the selection process for inclusion into ARTEXPRESS becomes harder and harder so we are very proud of her achievement.

year 7 SPort Week 8All year 7 students will be participating in a whole year group activity. They will be travelling by bus to the Big Banana water park for the afternoon. Students will need a towel, swimmers and a rashie. Sun cream and rashies will be provided for students who don not have them. This is a great opportunity for students to complete Year 7.

SPort 2014Most students have competed the process of their sport selections for 2014. Nearly all students’ choices could be met however there were a few sports that didn’t have enough interest to run. Students in those cases were allocated their other choices. There is still an opportunity for students to change sports if they are not happy with their final choice. Students can view their allocation of sports for 2014 through the same process they chose them.

They need to login to the student moodle and then on the bottom left side there is a link that will take them there. Students and parents are encouraged to check these final selections and contact me if there are any issues. Thanks for the support you have given the Monday sports program and I hope that your son and daughters have enjoyed the opportunities to be active. Have a happy and safe break over the holidays.

Middle School Attainment Ceremony will take place on Friday 29 November starting at approximately 8.55am and finishing at 9.50am in the Branson Centre. It is a ceremony acknowledging Year 9 finishing middle school and moving into senior school. There will be a small showcase of the talented Year 9 students. Year 9 parents are most welcome.

year 9 Peer Day on Wednesday 27 novemberAll Year 7 need a mentor/buddy to help guide them through the transition from primary to secondary school. Year 9 are training to be mentors. All Year 9 students will train to be peer mentors. Students will have the opportunity to mentor at Year 3, 5 and 7 camps next year, become RUOK mentors and be part of the welcoming party when Year 7 start school.

This year’s Philosothon was even busier than the inaugural 2012 affair: 10 schools from all sectors, 116 competitors and their 12 teachers, 14 adult judges, 28 student judges and 10 technical and hospitality crew. It was fun working out how many rooms, chairs, score sheets, nametags and food this horde of thinkers needed!

The Guest Speaker this year was Bellingen slam poet, Liz Routledge, who entertained and informed us with the tale of her journey through life and with her witty poems. The topics discussed included: ‘Don’t be yourself’, ‘Is it our duty to give to charity?’, ‘Should you always listen to the opinion of others?’, ‘The human species in 22013’, and ‘How free should speech be?’

The BDC competitors were: Joel Rutter, Noah Bedford, Brick Bradford Yr 11, Sam Holland, Sunita Williams, Anna Kaczan, Wayyln Turner, Alannah Beard, Alex Parker and Alyssa Cameron Yr 10, Dominic Jones, Stephanie Grey, Zaiah Segavcic, Sarah Graham-Higgs, Daniel Williams, Tom Tuohy Yr 9, Susan Brown, Max Kornhauser Charlotte Bedford Emily Gerard Yr 8, Alice Jeffery, Rhyys Turner, Jack Brown and Jem Batley Yr 7.Results

Bishop Druitt College won the overall school’s award against tough competition, thus qualifying the college to enter teams in the 2014 Australasian Philosothon. Students from a range of schools won the many individual awards. BDC successes included:

Dominic Jones Year 9 - Most Promising Male Philosopher (Division B) • Max Kornhauser Yearr 8 - ‘the Philosophers’ Philosopher (Division B)• The ‘Spirit of Philosophy’ was awarded to eight students, including Bishop Druitt College students, Charlotte Bedford Year 8 and • Tom Tuohy Year 9.

Some comments from the student visitors included: “We had a great time and made many new friends.” “We learnt a lot and the enjoyable experience will be remembered.”

Thank you to the many students who helped the Philosothon to run, especially Josh Jeremy Yearr 10 who again managed the complex IT support with equanimity, and Corwin Lee and Lillian Kok-McKosker Year 9 who proved to be invaluable detectors and solvers of problems.

Thanks also to the various staff who helped in so many ways, including: Kathy Ross, Sandra James, Craig Lang, Fiona Webb, Michelle Egan, Sue Coleman, Tim Egan, Jamie Murgatroyd and Stu Mac and his team.

Karin LisleAssistant Principal (Head of Primary)

from the head of primaryYesterday we presented the Sports Awards for the year 2013 to many of our students. With the media reporting of the growing epidemic in obesity and the decreasing levels of fitness of young people I was heartened to see so many of our students involved in sporting events. Although students were awarded for swimming, athletics and cross- country, Mr Weber also mentioned rugby, basketball, football, tennis, netball and AFL. I know it takes a lot out of parents’ days when you have to take children to sporting events as well as all the other activities your children do. Nowadays it is a stressful time for parents with everyone telling you what you should do as parents, how you should treat your children, and the list goes on. I think you all need a big pat on the back. Parenting is one of the hardest and never ending jobs, with little enough reward until the kids have grown up and moved out. I cannot find one parent at this school who does not care for their child and is not doing the best they know how. So… congratulations to you all as wonderful parents!

At BDC we take our Duty of Care very seriously. We have a set of rules to try to keep students safe. When students arrive at school there is a teacher on duty to ensure they play safely in the playground. The teacher is on duty from 8.15am. Before this time there is no one on duty. Before School Care is available to all primary students from 7.15 every morning in the Primary Library. You do not need to book your child in, but if they are at school without a parent before 8.15am they are expected to attend BSC. The cost is $10 per morning and if they have not had breakfast, this is included. I have noticed lately that some students are again being dropped at school very early. They have been instructed to come to the library if they do not have a parent with them.

I have also noticed that some change of travel arrangements for the day are coming in very late and it is difficult to get a message to some students to change arrangements. In future there will be a ‘runner’ sent to all classes at 2.30 every afternoon to ensure messages are getting to children if travel arrangements for the afternoon have changed. Please ensure that any messages you want passed on get to Mrs Porter on 66515644 extension 224 ([email protected]) by 2.30pm or we cannot ensure they are getting to your child in time and buses are missed. Teachers do not necessarily get to their computers to read emails until after school has finished. Some messages may not be delivered in time for a number of reasons in a hectic afternoon at school so this is the best way for us all to work together.

The weeks are flying past and I only have one more newsletter to write before the end of the year. If you would like anything mentioned in the newsletter please let me know. Next week we will have Meet Your New Teacher day as well as Carols night on Tuesday 26 November, and Year 6 Graduation on Thursday 28 November, in between swimming, surf safety, gymnastics and celebratory lunches. A very busy week before Presentation Day on Tuesday 3 December. I hope top see you all there.

Brett Bennett and Rosey Lang Student environment Group Coordinators

student environment groupVery exciting news from the Environment Group activities that took place at school this week as part of our NAB Seed Funding Grant. Firstly, our fantastically enthusiastic and passionate students planted 150 rainforest species trees along the riverbank in our designated regeneration zone.

Secondly, during our evening of frog monitoring we managed to locate a Giant Barred Frog!!! Our intrepid frog expert Mick Andren (primary parent and Department of Environment Threatened Species Officer) bravely waded through waist deep water to capture the frog for the students to observe at close quarters before releasing back into its habitat.

This is a very significant find. The Giant Barred Frog is listed as Endangered by the NSW and Commonwealth governments. It really is amazing to think this very important species is right here on college grounds and that the work of Student Environment Group will have national significance and directly support its preservation. For the Student Environment Group this provides an even greater incentive to regenerate and preserve our school’s waterways.

Congratulations to the following students for their hard work on Tuesday and their dedicated commitment to environmental causes: Josh Jeremy, Ethan Moran, Nic Greed, Anna Kazcan, Ellanie Marinucci, Jack Nesbitt, Giles Tenant, Josh Wilson-Douglas, Lyndon McPherson, Yaniv Shaul, Savannah Soule, Ryan Griffiths.

Thank you to our community partners in this project - Brent Hely (Coffs Coast Bush Regeneration) and Mick Andren (Departmentt of Environment and Heritage) for the amazing knowledge and expertise that they so graciously shared with our students. Thank you also to NAB, whose generous support helps make this program possible.

Many thanks also to Craig Lang, Sue Colman and Vicki Fisher who gave up their time at night to be part of this activity. Also special thanks to Jamie Murgatroyd for being such an enthusiastic and helpful supporter of this program.

year 10 music performance night

grade of the week - year 5

Well done to Ms Katie Gudgeon and her Year 10 music class for a great night of entertainment, showcasing talent and skills gained during the year.

During Week 2, Year 5 visited The Great Aussie Bush Camp. Here are just a few snip-its of what we learned.

“I want to try and conquer my fears.” Julian Clifford

“My highlights from camp were the tightropes, abseiling, and the giant swing because they were my biggest challenges and I succeeded.” Kyle Lang

“I learned the importance of setting a goal and trying to beat that goal.” Brianna Malouf

“I learned that I can do things I didn’t think I could do.” Tully Portus-Keen

“I learned that it is important to show respect for other people because if you put them down they won’t be able to achieve their best.” Henry Jacups

“I learned not to let my fears overtake me and to believe in myself and others around me.” Bradey Megarry

“Working in groups was my favourite part of camp because I learned that it gives me more confidence.” Asra Salman

“It was great getting to learn more about my friends.” Isabelle Watson

The Desert

I’m in the desert,Where it’s boiling hot,

There’s no sign of water,Not even a dot.

I ask a local camelHow he stays alive,“I open up a cactusand do a head dive”.

The wind grows strongAnd I try to stand put,I think about my future

And the wind grabs my foot.

Then I see the golden sandAnd something catches my eye,

I walk up to a hole just a metre away,Then I just sigh.

A small little fennec foxIs sitting in its den,Then I see a baby,so I name her Jen.

I look up at the red sand,I look up at the sky,

I just wish I wasn’t hereBecause I know I’m gonna die.

upcoming events

The newly formed BDC rowing team had their first taste of success last weekend. The boys raced for the Coffs Coast Rowing Club, in their first competitive rowing regatta, and had some outstanding results!

Eli White, Max Handley, Connor Schumer-Caldwell and Connor Pallet raced the Men’s U17 quad scull and finished a fantastic 2nd place. In other results, Max Handley teamed up with Connor Schumer-Caldwell in the Men’s U17 double scull to finish in 2nd place! Eli also finished 2nd in the mixed quad scull, teaming up with another boy and two girls from JPC, and then went on to win the Men’s Handicap double scull, and the Men’s U17 single scull. Congratulations to all the boys!

In their next regatta, which is again up at Grafton, the boys will be representing Bishop Druitt College in the first schools regatta for the season on December 7th and 8th. This is the first weekend of the holidays, so if you’re not doing anything, I urge you to attend and cheer on our boys and enjoy a day at the beautiful Clarence River. The boys need a couple of girls to form a mixed team, so if any girls are interested, please come and see Mr Webber.
