Both games begin at 7 p.m. The two teams met to open the season on Oct. 7 and 8 at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin, with NMU capturing a 3-2 victory in the opener and Wisconsin responding with a 6-5 triumph the next night for Head Coach Tony Granato’s first win behind the UW bench. NEW YORK REVIEW Wisconsin posted a perfect weekend, claiming a 5-2 vic- tory at No. 18 St. Lawrence last Friday, then a 5-4 victory at Clarkson last Saturday in upstate New York. On Friday, UW broke open a 2-2 game at the start of the third period when Trent Frederic scored shorthanded and what proved to be the game-winning goal at 2:53 of the final frame, following up a Ryan Wagner breakaway to poke home the rebound. Wagner later added a power- play goal and Luke Kunin sealed the 5-2 win with an empty-net goal for his second goal of the game. Saturday, UW jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two goals 39 seconds apart near the midpoint of the first period, saw the lead evaporate with two Clarkson goals - one in the last minute of the first period and in the first minute of the second period - then regained a two-goal lead with second period scores by defensemen Cullen Hurley and Corbin McGuire. Clarkson added a last-minute power-play goal in the second to close the gap again, but Grant Besse’s score 15 seconds into the third gave UW its two-goal lead back. Clarkson closed the gap one more time on Jordan Boucher’s third goal of the game, but UW held on the rest of the way for a 5-4 win. KEY NOTES TO CONSIDER UW opens a four-game homestand with its games this weekend against Northern Michigan. The Badgers are 196-125-41 at the Kohl Center since it opened for the 1998–99 season and so are four victories away from 200 wins in the building. Junior defeseman Cullen Hurley scored his first career goal when he tallied at 2:54 of the sec- ond period last Saturday at Clarkson. The goal put the Badgers up for good in the game and marked Hurley’s first goal in five career games played. Prior to the contest, Hurley had last played in a game on Jan. 24, 2015 at Michigan, a span of 55 games for Wisconsin. Senior Grant Besse had a ve-point weekend in New York, including the game-winning goal at Clarkson. He leads the Badgers with 10 points. Wisconsin’s 4-2-0 start to the season is the program’s best first six games in a campaign since the 2007-08 team also posted a 4-2-0 mark through six contests. Wisconsin’s perfect road week- end in New York last week gave the Badgers their first 2-0 road trip since March 7-8, 2014 at Penn State. UW went 16 road trips between 2-0 weekends. The Badgers scored 26 goals in six games during the month of October. The team aver- age of 4.33 goals per game ranks fourth in the nation. UW’s 26 goals through six games is the most since the 2007–08 Badgers tallied 28 goals through six games. 4 16 26 6 NCAA Championships 16 Conference Championships 39 All-Americans 23 Olympians 80 Badgers in the NHL WISCONSIN Ґ420ґ VS. BOYS OF OCTOBER Wisconsin’s 4-2-0 start to the season is the

program’s best first six games in a campaign since the 2007-08 team also posted a 4-2-0 mark through six contests.

UW’s 4-2-0 month of October marks its first month with a winning record since the Badgers went 5-2-0 in March of 2014.

ROAD LESS TRAVELED The Badgers’ win at St. Lawrence last Friday

snapped a three-game losing streak in road openers. UW captured a 2-0 game at Minnesota Duluth on Oct. 26, 2012 in its most recent road-opening win prior to last weekend.

UW is now 26-25-3 all-time in road open-ers.

GETTING OFFENSIVE The Badgers scored 26 goals in six games

during the month of October. The team average of 4.33 goals per game ranks fourth in the nation.

UW’s 26 goals through six games is the most since the 2007–08 Badgers tallied 28 goals through six games.

FAMILIAR UNFAMILIAR For the first time in school history, when the

Badgers have been a member of a confer-ence, UW will meet a non-conference oppo-nent four times in a season. The Badgers skate this weekend against WCHA-member Northern Michigan for the third and fourth times this season. UW split with NMU to open the season on Oct. 7 and 8.

There has been five previous times where the Badgers have played a team outside of conference play four times in a season. The most recent occurrence came during the 1968–69 season when UW went 4-0-0 against Notre Dame. FOUR MEETINGS OUTSIDE OF LEAGUE PLAY Opponent Season Record

Notre Dame 1968–69 4-0-0

Ohio University 1967–68 4-0-0

Ohio University 1966–67 3-1-0

Michigan State 1964–65 0-4-0

Macalaster 1964–65 4-0-0

GIMMIE FIVE Wisconsin’s 10-goal weekend in New York

included back-to-back fi ve-goal games. That marked the first time in six seasons the Badgers generated five goals or more in consecutive games. The last instance was Nov. 25 and 26 of 2011 when they whipped Mercyhurst 7-2 and 5-2. The last time UW accomplished that feat on the road was Feb. 26 and 27 of 2010 when it handed Michigan Tech a pair of 5-2 setbacks.

WINNING SHORTHANDED Freshman forward Trent Frederic scored

his second game-winning goal of his young

career last Friday when he poked home the rebound of a Ryan Wagner breakaway. The goal broke a 2-2 deadlock in the third peri-od at St. Lawrence in a game the Badgers would go on to win, 5-2.

Frederic’s game-winner also came while the Badgers were shorthanded, making it UW’s fi rst short-handed game-winning tally since Jan. 29, 2011. In that game, Patrick Johnson scored a short-handed goal to make it 2-0 in a 4-1 victory at Michigan Tech.

Frederic’s short-handed goal was the first for the Badgers since Luke Kunin scored one on Jan. 16, 2016 at Penn State for UW’s lone short-handed tally of the 2015–16 season. UW dropped that game, 4-1.

LEAGUE LEADERS Senior forward Grant Besse is one point

off the Big Ten scoring lead with 10 points. Freshman forward Tanner Laczynski leads with 11 points.

Senior defenseman Corbin McGuire and sophomore forward Luke Kunin are tied for third in the Big Ten with four goals each. OSU senior Nick Shilkey leads the league with eight goals in seven games.

Sophomore forward Seamus Malone shares the Big Ten lead with five power-play points, leading the league with a 0.83 pow-er-play points per game mark.

Freshman forward Trent Frederic is second in Big Ten scoring average among freshmen at 1.33 points per game, while his eight points rank fourth.

Frederic shares the Big Ten lead with two game-winning goals.

Junior defenseman Tim Davision ranks sec-ond among Big Ten rear guards with seven points on seven assists, one off the scoring pace of Penn State’s Trevor Hamilton.

Davison and Besse are tied for second in the league with seven assists.

Frederic, Ryan Wagner and Will Johnson’s are each tied for the Big Ten lead with two power-play goals.

SPECIAL TEAMS Wisconsin’s special teams had been key

to its success through its first five games, including last Friday when it went 1-for-5 on the power play and tallied for the first time this season while shorthanded, but Saturday’s victory at Clarkson came in spite of the special teams.

The Badgers went 0-for-5 with the man advantage at Clarkson, allowing the Golden Knights two power-play goals and eight chances, including once with Clarkson on a 5-on-3. The game was the first this season that UW failed to score on the power play and was the first it allowed more than one power-play goal to an opponent.

The Badgers scored all five of its goal while at even strength, the most goals it has scored at even strength in a game this sea-son, and the most in a game since scoring

five in a 5-2 victory at Michigan on Jan. 10, 2014.

Freshman Trent Frederic, sophomore Will Johnson and junior Ryan Wagner share the team lead with two power-play goals each. As a team, UW has nine power-play goals, and has allowed five to its opponents.

The Badgers are 22.5 percent on the power play this season (9-for-40), which ranks third in the Big Ten.

UW’s penalty kill is at 87.9 percent (34-for-39), which ranks third in the Big Ten.

CAPTAINS Sophomore forward Luke Kunin was named

team captain, the second sophomore captain in school history. Mike Eaves was a sopho-more captain for the 1975–76 season.

Joining sophomore forward Luke Kunin as alternate captains are senior forward Grant Besse and junior forward Cameron Hughes. Besse served as alternate captain last sea-son, while Hughes filled in at that capacity for a handful of games last year.

BESSE TO 100 Should senior forward Grant Besse match

his point total of 33 from last season, he would become the 74th skater in UW his-tory to reach 100 career points, and would become the first since Tyler Barnes (2010–14) reached the mark with 101 points for his career. He began the season needing 31 to reach 100.

With 10 points through six games, Besse currently boasts 33 goals, 46 assists and 79 points in 109 games played.

Besse’s 109 games played makes him one of just two Badgers who have played 100 career college games, joining fellow senior forward Jedd Soleway, who has played 103 games.

Besse’s 10 points leads the Badgers and shares second among Big Ten skaters, one behind Ohio State freshman forward Tanner Laczynski, who boasts 11 points in seven games.

Besse’s 1.67 points per game is tops among Big Ten skaters and is tied for 14th in the country. Among players who have played more than just one weekend, Besse is tied for sixth in points per game.

CAPTAIN KUNIN Luke Kunin ended the 2015–16 season

with points in a career-best seven straight games, tallying six goals and nine points during the ac ve streak. He had points in the fi rst two games of this season with a goal and an assist, before going pointless against BC. That gave Kunin a nine-game point streak da ng back to last year. He had seven goals and 11 points in that stretch.

Luke Kunin fi nished the 2015–16 season as the Badgers leading goal scorer with 19 goals, the fi rst UW rookie since Dany Heatley scored 28 goals in 1999–2000 to lead the Badgers in goals. The 19 goals are also the most for a UW freshman since Heatley’s 28.

Kunin’s 32 points made him the fi rst UW rookie to reach 30 points since Nic Kerdiles tallied 33 points (11 goals, 22 assists) in 32 games during the 2012–13 season. The 32 points were good for second among Big Ten freshmen, while his 0.94 points per game ranked seventh na onally among freshmen.

Kunin fi nished one back of UW’s point lead, narrowly missing becoming the fi rst UW rookie to pace the Badgers in scoring since Kyle Turris, who had 35 points during the 2007–08 season.

He scored four goals in the last minute of a period last season to rank second in the country, while his seven points in the last minute were also second. He had nine goals and 14 points in the fi rst and last minute of periods, which both led the country.

Kunin fi nished conference play as UW’s leader with 13 goals and 21 points in Big Ten play. His 13 goals ranked fourth among all Big Ten skaters, while his 21 points shared eighth. Both ranked second among Big Ten freshmen.

MANY HAPPY RETURNS Wisconsin returns 96.8 percent of its goals (90

of 93 goals), 80.4 percent of its assists (135 of 168 assists) and 86.2 percent of its points (225 of 261 points). The Badgers also return 100 percent of their power-play goals (22) from last season.

That year, Michael Mersch (36), Nic Kerdiles (33), Mark Zengerle (32), Tyler Barnes (30), Joseph LaBate (23) and Jake McCabe (21) each returned to the Badgers. Prior to 2013–14, UW had last returned at least five 20-point scorers for a season when seven began the 2009–10 campaign.

WISCONSIN HOCKEY 2016 176

HEAD COACH TONY GRANATOFIRST SEASONTony Granato, Wisconsin’s fifth head coach since 1966, begins a new era for Wisconsin. Having come directly from an assistant coach position for the Detroit Red Wings, Granato spent the past 13 NHL seasons as either a head coach or assistant coach, a year after retiring from a 13-year NHL career. The Wisconsin alum was 72-33-17 during his first head coaching stint with the Colorado Avalanche, which included the Northwest Division title in 2002-03 and a runner-up finish in 2003. He owns a 102-78-17 head coaching record with the Avalanche when including his 2008-09 season at the helm of Colorado. The Downers Grove, Illinois, native spent three-plus seasons as an assistant coach with the Avalanche, before five seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins (2009-14). During his time in Pittsburgh, the Penguins collected at least 101 points in each of his seasons and won a league-best 36 games during the 48-game campaign in 2012-13. The run included three division titles. Teams Granato served as head or assistant coach posted winning records in 12 of his 13 seasons in the NHL. Granato also served as an assistant coach for the 2014 U.S. Olympic Team, where he coached former Badgers Ryan McDonagh, Joe Pavelski, Derek Stepan and Ryan Suter, among other of the world’s star skaters. The team finished fourth. A four-time 30-goal scorer in the NHL, Granato was originally picked in the sixth round, 120th overall by the New York Rangers in the 1982 draft. In his first season in the NHL, during the 1988–89 campaign, Granato put up 36 goals, which still stand as New York’s record for rookie goal scoring. His 63-point effort that season got him a spot on the 1988–89 NHL All-Rookie Team. Granato skated for the New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks during his 13-year playing career. He helped the Kings reach the 1993 Stanley Cup Final, playing alongside Wayne Gretzky. He tallied six goals and 17 points in 24 playoff games during the run to the Cup Final. That same year, he recorded a career-high with 82 points (37 goals, 45 assists), one season after posting a career-high 39 goals. He went on to play for the San Jose Sharks and played in the 1997 NHL All-Star Game. He won the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy following that season in 1997 for his dedication to hockey. A member of Team USA at the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, Granato tied for second on the team with eight points, including seven assists for the seventh-place Americans. The seven assists are tied for third all-time for Team USA at one single Olympics. His three assists in a game on Feb. 13, 1988 against Austria are tied for second on the all-time list, one off the team single-game record. The 1988 Olympics marked Granato’s sixth appearance at a major international event for Team USA. He played for the Americans at the 1983 and 1984 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships, and skated at the 1985, ’86 and ’87 IIHF World Championships. He skated in a seventh major international event for Team USA at the 1991 Canada Cup. A two-time All-American for the Badgers, Granato was a finalist for the 1987 Hobey Baker Memorial Award after his 73-point senior season. In addition to serving as the Badgers’ captain during the 1986-87 campaign, Granato was named the WCHA Student-Athlete of the Year and the team’s Spike Carlson MVP award winner. A member of the UW Athletics Hall of Fame, he finished his Badger career as the school’s fourth-leading scorer with 220 points, ranking third with 100 career goals. Granato and his family have strong ties to Wisconsin as his brother and current UW associate head coach, Don, skated for the Badgers (1987–91). A second brother, Rob, also skated for UW (1992–94), as did cousin Kevin (1997–2001). Granato’s sister, Cammi, is in the Hockey Hall of Fame as one of the greatest women’s hockey players in history. She starred with Providence women’s hockey in the early 1990s. Tony and his wife, Linda, reside in Madison. They are the parents of four grown children, including Michael, Nicholas, Dominic and Gabriella.

SERIES NOTES This marks the sixth consecu ve year NMU and

Wisconsin match-up during the regular season. However, the last me the Badgers traveled to Marque e was Nov. 9, 1996.

UW is 4-6-2 against NMU the last fi ve years, but are 3-1-2 against NMU at the Kohl Center during that stretch.

The two teams have met 86 mes in history, begin-ning with the 1981 NCAA tournament.

Many of the mee ngs between the two schools came between 1984–97, when both schools were members of the WCHA.

The two games this weekend against NMU are the second weekend up of matchups between the two teams this year. They opened up the season on Oct. 7-8 in Green Bay at the Resch Center with the two teams spli ng the series.

The Badgers have played 12 games agianst NMU in the last fi ve seasons, including eight since UW began playing in the Big Ten. Those eight are the most against any non-conference opponent over the last three seasons.

WISCONSIN NMU CONNECTIONS Former Wisconsin forward Adam Rockwood trans-

ferred to Northern Michigan over the summer, but must sit out the season due to transfer rules. Rockwood posted five goals and 30 points in 59 games during two seasons for the Badgers.

O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? This weekend’s series between Wisconsin and

Northern Michigan features a brother battle as Wisconsin’s head coach Tony Granato, and his brother and associate head coach Don Granato face off against Northern Michigan’s Walt Kyle, and his brother and assistant coach John Kyle. The two teams are the only ones in the country that boast brothers on their coaching staffs.

LAST MEETINGWISCONSIN 6, BC 5OCT. 8, 2016

The Badgers and Wildcats played an 11-goal thriller at the Resch Center in Green Bay, which saw the Badgers get their first victory of the season and Tony Granato’s first career win.

A game which featured 16 penalties and two short-handed goals from NMU, swung back and forth until freshman Trent Frederic scored the game-winning goal on the power play with under nine minutes to play in the third period.

Although he gave up five goals, sophomore goalie Matt Jurusik made several key saves in the final frame which preserved what was a 5-5 tie and allowed UW to score the tie-breaking goal.

The Badgers scored four power-play goals in the game, which was the first time since Oct. 15, 2010 against Alabama-Huntsville that Wisconsin scored four goals on the man-advantage in the same contest.

UW dropped a 3-2 decision the night before to NMU in Green Bay in the season-opener.
