Avoid a shocking experience

Although quite beautiful, lightning at the Grand Canyon is potentially dangerous.During thunderstorms, please stay away from the edge of the canyon and do not seek shelter under a tree.

7 READING Young in Hollywood

Hollywood is the home of the TV and film industry, so it’s where a lot of actors make their home too. This article looks at one young actor trying to make a career in Hollywood.

Young in HollywoodBeing an actor is hard enough. How tough is Hollywood for a young newcomer? We talked to Sarah Hinchcliff, 23.

Hollywood must be a tough place to start out. Why did you decide to go there? I was always interested in Los Angeles. I guess because I come from a small town in California, the idea of a big city was very exciting to me. I’ve loved performing since I was in middle school, andI knew that I wanted to do that with my life. And I wanted to stay in California, so Hollywood seemedlike the place to go.

You went to acting school in Hollywood. What was that like?It was intense, but amazing. I was so busy all the time, learning new songs, new scenes, new monologues, and performing every single day. There were no days off. I think the only reason I did well was because I really love acting. A lot of people who were in my classes couldn’t deal with all the work and they left. But it was amazing to bearound other people who were just as serious aboutacting as myself. I learned so much. I really miss acting school now because I don’t get the chance to perform every day any more!

So now you’re finished with acting school and you’re living in Hollywood. Has it been tough finding work? There have definitely been some ups and downs. I’m a big believer in the phrase “dreams don’t work unless you do”. So I just keep trying. There are times when I tell myself I should be working harder. You just have to really put yourself out there, and not be scared of hearing the word “no”.

What sort of work have you managed to get?I’ve had the chance to act in lots of short films, student films and other projects. I had a role in a DreamWorks app ad for the web, and I’ve been in some TV ads for other countries. At the moment I’m helping out in a few different casting offices that find actors for TV ads. That’s my “day job”.

Do you think you’ll continue with acting? Do you have any specific goals?I will definitely stay with acting. I can’t imagine my life without it. Recently I reached one of my main goals, which was to get an agent who will represent me. I am now with a wonderful actor’s agency, and I can’t wait for the doors that it will open for me. My next goal is to do a TV ad and, after that, to get a role in a TV series.

What advice would you give to young people who want to do what you’re doing?Be fearless. If you don’t get a role, or someone tells you “no”, don’t think that you’re not good enough. Work hard and know that you can reach your dreams! You’ll probably hear 20 nos before you get one yes. But that one yes could make it all worth it!

6 READING Adventure sports in California

California is a popular place for adventure sports. Read what young Californians in this teen magazine say about their favourite adventure sports.

_ □ x

www.california_sports.home

– Hey, Californians, tell us about your sport! –

Evan, 17, from Huntington BeachWhen the wind is strong, your kite pulls you straight off the beach and acrossthe water really fast. It’s so awesome. And when you go over a nice-sized wave, if you have enough speed you shoot up into the air and the kite pulls you higher. We call it “getting big air”. That’s the greatest thing about kite surfing. You’re holding on to the stick and you’re higher than a tree. Then you can do tricks – turn around, go upside down, whatever. When you come down, your board softly hits the water and you just keep going. The windsurfers look at you and you know they’re jealous.

Fay, 16, from OaklandI used to go hiking with my parents, and that was cool. But mountain biking ismuch more fun, especially with friends. You have to have the right gear, of course, and a good helmet is really important in case you fall. If you go too fast on a narrow trail you can easily lose control. But I’m really careful on the turns and going down steep hills. I like doing long tours, like several hours or all day. When we get tired and hot, we stop and rest and enjoy the nature. I always take a backpack with me with water and snacks.

Cory, 18, from SacramentoThe first time I saw someone paragliding was in the mountains when we sawpeople going up tandem – you know, with someone who knows what they’re doing. I wanted to be up there. So my parents let me go tandem, and it was awesome. I didn’t want to come down. Then I took a course and learned to do it solo. It’s a strange feeling when you run and jump and … whoosh – suddenly you’re flying. I would never do it out of a plane – that’s too extreme for me. I like to jump from a hill or a mountain with the chute already open.

Ashley, 17, from San JoseI love going fast. And I love winning. People used to be surprised when I stopped and took off my helmet and they saw that I was a girl. But now lots of girls are racing motocross. And a lot of us are faster than the boys. What else do I like about this sport? Well, I love the hills and the jumps. It takes a lot of practice to do it well, and I’ve landed badly a few times. That hurts. But flying through the air is such a great feeling. And I don’t mind getting dirty and muddy – it’s part of the fun!

Quentin, 17, from Santa BarbaraI guess it looks sporty when you see people doing it, but for me it’s just a way to relax. Stand-up paddle boarding is really simple and you don’t need much gear. And the ocean is amazing. It’s so beautiful when I’m out there. I see a lot of animals – seagulls, pelicans, sea lions, dolphins and even whales. Luckily I haven’t seen any sharks yet. I don’t need water sports with action and waves and wind. I prefer this. The board is big and easy to stand on and, once you get out past the waves, you can paddle around slowly and quietly. It’s so peaceful.
