BRACKEN RIDGE SKATE PLAZA AND BRACKEN RIDGE AQUATIC CENTRE UPDATE NEWSLETTER | NOVEMBER 2015 I am pleased to advise Brisbane City Council has started construction of the Bracken Ridge Skate Plaza in Fitzgibbon. The start of works for Bracken Ridge Skate Plaza follows the start of construction of upgraded facilities at Paddington and Inala, which will enhance two of the city’s most popular skate parks. Council has worked closely with the local community and community reference groups throughout the design process for each of these skate parks to ensure the needs of users and the broader community were met. I excitedly await the completion of this new facility, which promises to provide an entirely unique experience for roller sport participants. The skate plaza will be positioned next to the Bracken Ridge Aquatic Centre, at 523 Telegraph Road, Fitzgibbon. The new Bracken Ridge Aquatic Centre will provide another contemporary community facility for residents and visitors to pursue an active and healthy lifestyle. There has been a 70 per cent increase in the number of patrons at Council’s pools since 2006, with more than two million visitors each year due in large part to recent pool enhancement and construction projects. I trust this new facility will provide more great opportunities for residents to cool off, relax, stay fit and learn to swim all year round, by utilising both the facility’s indoor and outdoor pools. Access to the new facilities has also been improved through the recent completion of works to upgrade the Telegraph Road and Denham Street intersection. The project will provide safer access to the aquatic centre and skate plaza. Both Bracken Ridge Aquatic Centre and Bracken Ridge Skate Plaza are due for completion in early 2016, weather permitting. I look forward to joining the local community to celebrate the opening of these fantastic facilities in the near future. BRACKEN RIDGE SKATE PLAZA | NEWSLETTER | NOVEMBER 2015

Brisbane City Council is constructing a competition-standard, plaza-style skate facility at 523 Telegraph Road in Fitzgibbon. The park will feature a range of unique features and transitions to promote creativity and usability for skaters of all abilities.

The final design of Bracken Ridge Skate Plaza is the product of significant community input. Council held two informal consultation events with roller sport participants at nearby Deagon Skate Park on 5 August 2015 and Zillmere Skate Park on 6 August 2015. Approximately 30 park users attended the Deagon event and 14 attended at Zillmere to share their opinions on features they would like to see at the Bracken Ridge facility.

A formal consultation event was held at the Sandgate Town Hall on Wednesday 26 August 2015. The event was led by Council and a representative from specialist skate designer Convic and stakeholders included representatives from the Brisbane Skateboarding Association and other passionate members of the local skateboarding community.

The outcome of the consultation led to the adoption of the current design, which will be the first true plaza-style facility in Brisbane. It is the aim of Council that the skate plaza will enhance Brisbane’s ability to attract professional-level skateboarding demonstrations and provide an ideal location to host local competitions.

Project features

• skate features including ledges, rails, banks, spines and gaps

• transitions including various quarter pipes and roll-ins to enhance usability and flow

• unique structures including a skateable planter box, pole jam, pyramid and fire hydrant

• lighting installation to facilitate night time use of the park

• a shelter, seating and trees to provide shade

Construction impacts

Construction will start in early November 2015 and is expected to be completed in early 2016, weather permitting. Construction will generally take place between 7am-5pm, Monday to Saturday. No changed traffic conditions on Telegraph Road are expected as a result of this project. However, traffic controllers will be on-site when required during construction to ensure a safe road environment for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

Council would like to thank residents and skate park users in advance for their patience while we undertake these works.

Bracken Ridge Aquatic Centre– project update

Bracken Ridge Aquatic Centre is taking shape, with both indoor and outdoor pools excavated and concreted. Drainage and new underground services have also been installed.

Work has progressed on the buildings with most of the block work and structural steel in place and the glazing and roof to be installed shortly.

Upcoming works include completing the new carpark, pool tiling, internal fit-out of the buildings and plant room and landscaping. Testing and commissioning of the aquatic centre’s plant and equipment will also occur before the facility opens to the public.

The aquatic centre is expected to open in early 2016 with Australian Crawl operating the facility on behalf of Council. Australian Crawl also operate Council’s Sandgate Aquatic Centre.
