The Crickets/Buddy Holly The 'Chirping' Crickets/Buddy Holly BGOCD517 5017261205179 C D BGO RECORDS ROCK 'N ' RO LL Originally released in the US on different labels: ‘The “Chirping” Crickets' on Brunswick (November, 1957) and ‘Buddy Holly’ on Coral (March, 1958) Both Brunswick and Coral were part of the giant US Decca label (now MCA), but for various reasons (not least because Holly was prolific both as a songwriter and as a recording artist), it was decided to treat The Crickets and Buddy Holly as separate acts, although, of course, Holly was the lead vocalist in both cases. In the UK, both acts were released on Coral. Not blowing our own trumpet, but according to our sleevenote writer John Tobler (who has written more sleevenotes than anyone else in Britain) it is his belief that “this coupling of two of the seminal albums in rock’n’roll history is the ultimate in bargain-priced reissues”! Most of the songs on this LP were recorded in 1955 and are the product of a personal and musical friendship between Buddy and his boyhood friend, Bob Montgomery. ‘Giant’ was put together after Buddy’s death, using tapes brought in by Buddy’s parents which were transferred to a multi-track recorder. This is Fourth volume of the vocal works of the influential late 17th century composer Dieterich Buxtehude, and the 11th volume in the Opera Omnia series from Ton Koopman and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Choir and soloists. The double CD set includes shorter vocal works - pieces of varying texts, styles, genres, lengths, formats, and scorings, which would have been performed at the composer’s Abendmusiken. Dieterich Buxtehude’s vocal music ranks among the most attractive of the late 17th century and forms a climactic point in Lutheran church music between Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach. His Abendmusiken became particularly famous though the large scale oratorios he produced for them. Unfortunately, the music for none of these influential works survived; only printed texts for some of the oratorios are extant today. Recent research, however, turned up evidence that not only oratorios but also shorter vocal works with both German and Latin texts were performed at the Abendmusiken. Hence, the programs for Buxtehude’s winter series of church music concerts may well have resembled the kind of collection gathered in this album – pieces of varying texts, sty les, genres, lengths, formats, and scorings.

Ton Koopman is one of the world’s foremost early music specialists and directors. His recording of the complete Bach Cantatas received worldwide acclaim. He is president of the International Dieterich Buxtehude Society and one of the world’s leading authorities on his music.

Caecilia-Concert Schmelzer & Co. - Music at the Habsburg Court

CC72339 608917233926 CD CHALLENGE CLASSICAL The versatile ensemble Caecilia-Concert, a group which specialises in the interpretation of 17th century music for instruments and voices, here perform pieces by a range of German and Italian Baroque composers who worked at the Habsburg Court including Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, Johann Joseph Fux, Marco Antonio Ferro, and Antonio Bertali. The works included on this CD are among the last, highly v irtuosic compositions for a range of period instruments like the cornetto and the dulcian. In the 18th century, the leading role of these instruments was taken over by more ‘modern’ instruments such as the baroque oboe, the baroque bassoon, not to mention the violin and cello, but during the 17th century compositions for these instruments were extremely popular at the Great court of the Habsburgs in Vienna. Many of the leading composers of the day, including Schmelzer and Fux, took up residence there and wrote many delightful pieces.

The group Caecilia-Concert was formed in 2001 by a group of young instrumentalists who were already working at the forefront of authentic performance practice in Europe. The aim was to rediscover and bring to today’s audiences music which had been lost, forgotten about, or had simply lain for hundreds of years in the shadows of other great works. Since then, Caecilia-Concert has not only made a name for itself as a v irtuosic, flexible, small-scale recital ensemble of the highest international level, but has on occasion, expanded to incorporate other instruments and singers performing rarely heard masterpieces from Italy, Germany, Austria and The Netherlands. This recording by pianist Yoram Ish-Hurwitz of the third and fourth book of Isaac Albéniz’s Iberia completes the two-disc series. The first volume which featured books one and two was released on the hybrid SACD TR75529. Iberia is a collection of pieces written at the very end of the composer’s life (he died in 1909), and the music reflects the countryside and spirit of his native Andalusia. Disillusioned after the debacle surrounding a planned opera trilogy, the Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz devoted the last years of his life to his magnum opus entitled “Iberia”. In just over two years, a gravely -ill Albéniz wrote the 12 nouvelles ‘impressions’, as he called them, alternating between Paris and Nice. In these pieces he seems to have produced an accurate sketch of Spain around the turn of the century. Because of the flamenco elements and the titles of the pieces, Andalusia is often called the source of inspiration for the cycle, but the emerging Impressionism of Paris also seems to have left its mark on its sty le. Yoram Ish-Hurwitz is a Dutch pianist of Israeli origin. He began his studies with Danièle Dechenne and Jan Wijn at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam. In 1993 he was the first Dutch pianist to graduate from the Juilliard School in New York with the Hungarian pianist György Sándor. The three Eberhard Weber albums Yellow Fields, Silent Feet, and Little Movements – which incorporate all the music made for ECM by his innovative group Colours – are collected together in a specially-priced 3-CD box set. The recordings, produced by Manfred Eicher between 1975 and 1980, have been out of print for some time and their return will be welcomed by the great German bassist’s many supporters.

The “Colours” boxset includes extensive liner notes by Michael Tucker, based on interviews with the musicians, and rare archive photos. Released to coincide with the presentation to Eberhard Weber of Germany’s biggest jazz award, the Albert Mangelsdorf Preis, it is the latest instalment in ECM’s acclaimed ‘Old and New Masters’ series. This has previously featured state-of-the-art music productions with Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea and Gary Burton, Steve Kuhn and Codona. Beautiful Collectors’ Editions all, they make perfect Christmas presents.

Colours was formed in 1975, initially to take music from Weber’s award-winning The Colours of Chloe on the road, but quickly took on its own special identity, drawing on the musicians’ exceptional talents and touching on jazz improvisation, rock energy, contemporary composition, diverse world musics and the pulse patterns of minimalism. The line-up featured the great US jazz saxophonist Charlie Mariano and Rainer Brüninghaus on keyboards. Jon Christensen drummed on Yellow Fields, but for Silent Feet and Little Movements, British drummer John Marshall, who had been exploring similar sonic territory in his work between jazz and rock with the Soft Machine, was drafted in. Colin Towns & HR-Bigband Visions of Miles

IORCD771012 798747710121 CD IN & OUT JAZZ Colin Towns’ latest project sees the acclaimed pianist and composer turn his attention to the music of Miles Davis “electric period” of the 1970’s and 80’s. Performed by the HR Big Band, and recorded live in Frankfurt in June 2008, it includes unique arrangements of material from a number of Miles’ most influential albums including “Bitches Brew”, “On The Corner” and “Tutu”. In writing the arrangements Towns was presented with a particular challenge in that the themes in Miles 70’s music were often very skeletal. However he clearly succeeds in his orchestration of these sometimes sparse materials by judicious use of flutes and bass clarinet, for example, together with v irtuosic flights on trumpet and guitar. By way of contrast, he also adds tunes that are more through composed including music from the Marcus Miller period in the 1980’s such as “Full Nelson” and “Tutu”. Sun Ra Arkestra Live at The Paradox

Legendary pianist and bandleader Sun Ra departed from this Earth in 1993 but his cosmic legacy lives on via this excellent new CD by his Arkestra recorded at The Paradox Music Club in The Netherlands in 2008.

Now led by 85 year old alto saxophonist / flautist Marshall Allen, this live set reflects the imperturbable spirit of freedom and creativ ity of a band which has existed for some 55 years. The organisations unique musical v ision has influenced figures in the world of jazz such as John Coltrane and also inspired rock bands such as Sonic Youth and the MC5.

Also on board this particular astral journey is long standing tenor saxophonist Charles Davis, a veteran of the original Chicago based Arkestra, and newcomer Farid Barron, the first to occupy the pianists chair since Sun Ra’s passing. As with all Arkestra performances the music is a beguiling mix of inter-planetary (free) flights of fancy and swing tunes such as the appropriately titled “Hocus Pocus” from the pen of Fletcher Henderson. This new studio recording features the famous drummer with a mellow group that features mesmerizing interplay between Hargrove's spaciously -blown lines, and Malone's slow-burning and chromatic sounds. Joe Lee Wilson Shout For Trane WNCD79408 708857940820 CD CANDID JA ZZ The first time to hear this recording of Joe Lee Wilson, a true jazz master, in over 30 years. Joe Lee Wilson was born on December 22nd 1935 in Bristow, Oklahoma and his gospel influenced jazz singing comes from his roots there, where he sang in church as a child.The experience of seeing Billie Holiday in 1951 was to embark Wilson on his jazz singing odyssey. Moving to California he was versed in classical singing and studied jazz at Los Angeles City College and started working as a jazz vocalist on the West Coast. Eventually New York beckoned and Joe Lee moved there in 1962. He was, by now well immersed into the contemporary jazz scene and in that decade he worked with such luminaries as Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Pharoah Sanders, Jackie McLean and Lee Morgan. The session was done in New York in 1976 with members of Joe Lee's regular band Bond Street with saxophonist Monty Waters (also recorded for Why Not as leader), the somewhat obscure Fielder Floyd on trumpet and a superb rhythm section of guitarist Shiroh Mori, bassist Kiyoto Fujiwara and George Avaloz on drums. In 1976 the eni gmatic Japanese businessman-turned-producer Masahiko Yuh recorded this album with Ted Curson at Vanguard Studios in NewYork with an inspiring rhythm section comprising Jim McNeely on piano, bassist Cecil McBee and Steve McCall, drums. The session turned out to be one of Curson's hippest as together the quartet jell into an air-tight unit with a hard swing that never loses it's drive, weaving their collective magic through a collection of Curson originals and standards .This is Ted Curson is in fine form with a series of adventurous solos. including the bonus of an extended work out on his special Piccolo trumpet on the aptly titled Blue Piccolo. One of twenty recordings in the Why Not series this is the first time this album has been made available in the West. The Why Not recordings were lovingly gathered by Yuh over a period of months and as a result provide a valuable snap shot of the Jazz scene in America during the 1970s, a time when the Avant Garde scene was blooming. Born in Ventura, California on 26th July 1938 Joanne met her husband, tenor saxophonist Charles Brackeen, when she was just 19 years old. By this time she was already playing the circuit on the West Coast but took a break to raise a family with her husband. Taking an unconventional route Joanne returned to music in the late 60s. Now based in New York she played with Art Blakey's legendary jazz messengers for two years before moving on to play with Joe Henderson and Stan Getz. Brackeen's music is characterised by being both playful and complex. She has a strong, forceful approac h to the piano. Her playing reflects her rapport with Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and McCoy Tyner as well as the aforementioned Art and Joe. She executes runs with furious intensity - cross rhythms abound and each member of this outstanding trio adds fresh ideas, enriching the texture of the tunes. She likes to think that she gives her music a variety of colours and says that the music comes naturally to her. While best remembered for his role in Traffic, Capaldi was a driven and inspired musician capable of creating enduring work. Oh How We Danced featured Muscle Shoals musicians David Hood, Roger Hawki ns, Barry Beckett and Jimmy Johnson, pl us Traffic members Steve Winwood, Chris Wood, Rick Grech, Jim Gordon and Rebop on ‘Open Your Heart’. Two for the price of one Raven presents two original, innovative WALL OF VOODOO albums on one CD for the first time: Dark Continent (I.R.S., 1981) and Call of the West (I.R.S., 1982) . Wall of Voodoo emerged from the late 1970s Los Angeles punk/alternative scene with a unique blend of machine-age junk music and off-kilter pop-rock. Like Devo, Wall of Voodoo’s sound was always challenging and entertaining. The debut Dark Continent was brilliantly executed with a blend of hyperactive rhythm box beats, Western and film noir-influenced guitar, colourful washes of synthesizer and lead singer Stan Ridgway’s distinctive vocals and highly stylised cinematic narratives. Tracks like ‘Back in Flesh’ and ‘Full of Tension’ dealt with tense relationships in a suitably dark manner. Call of the West is livelier and even more articulate, yielding the now-classic alternative hit ‘Mexican Radio’. ‘Lost Weekend’ and ‘Factory’ examined the quiet tragedy of suburban existence. There’s intelligence at work and a bite to the music that continues to mark Call of the West as a successful and altogether satisfying work.
