The Best of Kathryn Tickell’ is a two-disc set containing the highlights ofNorthumbrian piper, fiddle player and composer, Kathryn Tickell. It seems aparticularly fitting release since the globally acclaimed Northumbrian musicianwas awarded the prestigious Queen’s Medal for Music this year.

Following on from this award, Kathryn will have a very special celebration at theSage Gateshead in December with special guest Sting amongst others.

Kathryn Tickell is a composer, performer and successful recording artist whosework is deeply rooted to the landscape and people of Northumbria. She alsoworks collaboratively across many genres, making her work contemporary andexciting, and putting her firmly at the forefront of the current folk music revival.In 2008 she became the first folk musician in history to be commissioned to writea piece for the BBC Proms. It was written for Folkestra, Muzsikás, LondonSinfonietta and London Young Musicians.

One of the foremost composers of our time and Master of the Queen’s Music, SirPeter Maxwell Davies, composed a piece especially for Kathryn, commissioned byThe Sage Gateshead and premiered with musicians from Northern Sinfonia inOctober 2006 and aired on BBC Radio 3. Winner of BBC Radio 2 Folk Award’sMusician of the Year in 2005, Kathryn was the subject of a Channel 5 televisiondocumentary ‘Kathryn Tickell’s Northumbria’ and has made numerous TV andradio appearances. In July 2007, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate byUniversity of Northumbria for her outstanding and inspirational achievements.

GERRY RAFFERTY is a popular “music giant”, thanks to the song "Baker Street".His career long predated that phenomenal fixture of top 40 radio. Indeed, by thetime he cut "Baker Street", Rafferty had already been a member of two extremelysuccessful collaborations: The Humblebums and Stealers Wheel. The album, “Cityto City”, which spawned “Baker Street” was released in 1978. It was a melodic,yet strangely enigmatic album and sold, in millions around the world, topping thealbum charts on both sides of the Atlantic.
