LO3 Properties of shapes and objects: 2- and 3-Dshapes and objects

    1. Karen visited her grandmother during the June examinations. She

decided to help her grandmother by cleaning out the attic. Whileshe was cleaning she came across boxes of things hergrandmother had kept and were now old. Amongst the wonderfulthings she found a patchwork blanket that her great-grandmotherhad made. Refer to the picture of one fifth of the blanket belowand answer the questions that follow.

1.1 Karen measures the patches with an old tape measure that shefound in a sewing box. The patches are 6 inches by 4 inches.Determine the size of the whole patchwork blanket in inches.

1.2 Convert the measurements of the patchwork patches intocentimetres and determine the measurements of the wholeblanket in centimetres square.

1.3 The tape measure measures up to a total of 5 foot 6 inches. Inmetric terms, how long is 5 foot 6 inches?

1.4 On closer inspection, Karen finds that one of the patches is asshown below.

1.4.1 Write down the various shapes used in the patch.

1.4.2 What form of transformation was used for the corner triangles?

    2. Design a pattern for a square patchwork transformingparallelograms.

    3. Draw a net (a 2-D combination of shapes that can be folded up to

form the object) of a triangular pyramid, a truncated triangularpyramid (the top has been cut off) and a trapezium in the shape ofa lampshade.

    4. Snowmans Castle Pre-school received a donation of variousshaped pieces of foam rubber for the children to play on. Use theshapes below to make up the following shapes:

    4.1 Truck

    4.2 Bridge

    4.3 House

    5. Draw an isometric view (on isometric paper) of a cube, a triangularprism and a hexagonal prism.

    6. Scoop spoons for ice cream come in different sizes. Study thedrawing of the two round spoons below and calculate the volumeof the ice cream ball that each scoop will make in cm and ml.

    ANSWERS

    1.1 (6 X 5) X (4 X 8) = 30 inches x 32 inches for one fifth.

    The whole blanket measures

    (30 x 5) x (32 x 5) = 150 x 160 = 24 000 inches

    1.2 1 inch = 2,54 cm

    The whole blanket measure

    ((30 x 2,54) x 5) x ((32 x 2,54) x 5)= 381 cm x 406,4 cm

    = 154 838,4 cm

    1.3 5 foot and 6 inches = (5 x 12) + 6= 66 inches

    = 66 x 2,54= 167,64 cm

1.4.1 Shapes: square, rectangles and triangles.

    1.4.2 Reflection, translation and rotation.
