The Good Samaritan

In the Mediterranean world questions are rarely perceived as requests for information. They are almost always viewed with suspicion as a challenge to personal honor. The hope is that the person who is asked a question will not know the answer and be shamed by ignorance. Lest the reader miss the point, Luke explicitly states that the lawyer’s intent was to “test” Jesus.

In this seven-scene parable, the Samaritan stands at the center:

1. The robbers strip their victim and leave him half dead (Gospel). Now, no one can identify the victim’s ethnicity by his garments or his accent, two very common ways of identifying a stranger in antiquity. Helping him carries a risk.

2. The priest, riding a donkey in accord with his elite status, notices the victim and ponders. If the victim is dead or is a non-Judean, the priest would be defiled by touching him and have to return to Jerusalem for purification. Those who just saw him gloriously fulfilling his priestly role would now see him returning in shame for purification. The risk is too great. Recalling Sirach 12:1-7, the priest rides on.

3. The Levite may have come even closer to examine the victim. Even though the road is not straight, the Levite very likely saw the priest’s response to the victim from afar. If the priest did not give first aid, why should the Levite? That would be a challenge to the priest, an insult. Moreover, if this victim is one of those who live in Shechem (i.e., a Samaritan), Sirach 50:25-26 reports what God thinks of such. The Levite, too, passes on.

4. The Samaritan is a shocking third character in this story. Listeners would have expected “a Judean layperson.” But this hated enemy is the first to feel compassion! The Hebrew word, related to womb, describes an inner gut-feeling.

5. He offers the first aid (wine, oil, and bandages), which the Levite could have done but neglected to do. The Samaritan’s risk is that this victim might hate him upon re-gaining consciousness. Samaritan wine and oil were considered impure and would have made the (very likely) Judean victim impure too! In a certain sense, the Samaritan in this story line will be “damned if he does, and damned if he doesn’t.”

6. The Samaritan then does what the priest might have done but didn’t: he places the victim on

his animal, takes him to an inn, and continues to care for him.

7. Finally, the Samaritan, in contrast to the robbers, promises to return and pay any additional expenses. This is perhaps the most foolish part of this story. If the victim should die, his family, who will not be able to find the robbers, may kill his benefactor instead. Or if the victim survives, he may rage at this Samaritan for making him impure with Samaritan wine and oil. It is impossible to underestimate the importance of purity, that is, the determination to “be holy as the Lord is holy” (Lev 11:44 and elsewhere).

The thrust of the parable is not lost on the lawyer. Now Jesus thrusts the final shaming question: “Which of the three became a neighbor to the victim?”

The astute lawyer immediately recognizes this new, impending shame. The lawyer’s question was: “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus’ question is: “To whom must you become a neighbor?” The lawyer realizes that one must become a neighbor to anyone and everyone in need. One must reach out with compassion to all people, even to one’s enemies.

Too often this parable has been read as a pleasant moral lesson of kindness and neighborliness. Fleshing out all the characters in their Mediterranean cultural characteristics gives the parable a fresh look. A hated outsider extends compassionate love to his enemy. What a masterful attack on communal prejudice!

Saturday, July 27th, 2019Day of Prayer: Journaling My JourneyPresenter: Dottie Levesque

Many young people keep a diary ... a record of people seen, work accomplished and emotions expressed. Adolescence matures into adulthood and the diary becomes a journal. A journal is a commitment made to self -- to the "God-in-me". It is a prayerful method of putting words to one's thoughts. Four styles of journaling will be presented. There will, of course, be time for experimenting with each style.

15TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEJULY 14, 2019Beloved of GodWe will hear the whole Christian, Catholic life very gently stated in Sunday’s readings.

For instance. In the First Reading Moses explains how simple God's commands are. His words are beautiful.

God’s command is not too mysterious and remote for you. It is not up in the sky, that you should say, ‘Who will go up in the sky to get it for us and tell us of it, that we may carry it out?’ Nor is it across the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will cross the sea to get it for us and tell us of it, that we may carry it out?’

It is already in our hearts and in our mouths. We have only to carry it out.

But what is it?

In the Gospel, a lawyer is very interested in this question. He asks Jesus to boil down the law to a single saying. Since an answer would be “not too mysterious and remote,” Jesus asks the lawyer what the latter thinks it is. The man says by rote:

You shall love the Lord, your God,

with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.

“You have answered correctly; Jesus says. Do this and you will live.” But the man wants specifics. He is digging. Who is my neighbor, he asks.

What would be your answer to this question? It seems to be the crux of the matter.

For his part, Jesus is trying to get the man (and us?) to find the simple answer without having it handed to him. As before, Jesus does not respond directly, but this time gives the lawyer a parable to

chew on.

A man fell victim to robbers. They beat him terribly, take his money, and leave him lying in the road, half-dead. A priest (an Israeli) saw this wounded man on the road and he passed right by, averting his eyes. A Levite (an Israeli) did the same thing. Along came a Samaritan, who theoretically should have been an enemy of the Israelis. But he did not avert his eyes or cross to the

other side of the road.*

He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal,

took him to an inn, and cared for him.The next day he took out two silver coinsand gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction,  “Take care of him.”

Jesus asks him, “Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?,” and the lawyer says right away, “the one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus answers, “Go and do likewise.”

Jesus says the same thing to you and me. He keeps working with us, trying to get us to see the simple answer inside us. Go help those in need. God has given you an open heart. If only you would let your heart be wide enough to receive his love and then pass it on to his other beloved people!

So, this is not too mysterious or remote. Start now. Become what you were made to be. It is written within you.

John Foley, SJ________ * Jesus is not trying to slander the Israelis, he is showing that your neighbor is not just your own tribe or family or even just your friends. Every person on earth is your neighbor. Each is beloved to God, each is precious to the One we are to love with our entire strength, mind, self, and being.

Fr. John Foley, SJ, is a composer and scholar at Saint Louis University.

THE PERSPECTIVE OF JUSTICE

Living ImageGod’s law is not so mysterious and remote; it is not up in the sky or across the sea, but is already in our

mouths and hearts. And what is that law? To love God with everything we have, and to love our neighbor as ourselves.

We have difficulty loving God because we live in a world “filled with lights contrary to” the light of God’s truth. “The Lord hears the poor,” but our world scorns the poor. Our God makes “peace through the blood of his cross” while our world tries to make peace through the blood of soldiers and innocent civilians.

We have difficulty loving our neighbor because we do not understand “neighbor” as Jesus did. Neighbor for us means people we like, people who are on our side, who work for a living, and who mind their own business. Jesus redefines neighbor as the hated stranger who is down and out, challenging us to stop what we are doing and care for his need.

The priest in the Gospel may have been going to the temple to worship God. Jesus is teaching his followers to see the ditch as God’s dwelling place: to love neighbor as defined by Jesus is to love God.

One’s neighbor is not only a human being with his or her own rights and a fundamental equality with everyone else, but becomes the living image of God the Father, redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ and placed under the permanent action of the Holy Spirit. One’s neighbor must therefore be loved, even if an enemy, with the same love with which the Lord loves him or her.
