Course evaluation SVF-3554 A social science perspective on fisheries management and development

With only one assingment, ungraded, the course is too easy, and it's hard to keep motivated to read the syllabus when nothing is expected.Seminars are a good thing, but the lecturer should make it easier to prepare for each. Give two or three articles specifically for that seminar, pr else the discussions in seminars are thin, uninspired and futile.

Resource economics course seems to be very broad and hard. i felt relatively less relevance in international fisheries management. Course can be revised :)

1. Hvordan vurderer du studentenes faglige forutsetninger for å ta emnet og er

undervisningen tilpasset forkunnskapsnivået til studentene? Varierende forkunnskaper. Erasmus-studentene hadde svært dårlige engelsk-kunnskaper. Totalt sett var dette kullet svakere enn fjorårets. Det virket som om flere hadde problemer med de samfunnsvitenskapelig perspektivene.

2. Hvordan var studentenes grad av deltakelse på undervisningen (oppmøte på forelesninger, øvelser, datalab etc.)? Varierende. De var lite aktive i timene og oppmøtet var til dels dårlig. En kjerne på ca 8 studenter møtte til alle timer. Mange la liten innsats ned i arbeidskravet (10 s essay). Bare et fåtall fikk dette godkjent etter første innlevering. De fleste prøvde å gjøre det enkelt ved å søke opp essayteamet på nett i stedet for faktisk å benytte pensum til å besvare oppgaven de var gitt. Alle fikk godkjent før innlevering, men noen studenter måtte gjennom to revideringer.

3. Hvordan vurderer du arbeidsmengden på emnet (pensum, obligatoriske innleveringer etc.) og hvilke tilbakemeldinger har studentene gitt om arbeidsmengden i dette emnet sett i forhold til øvrige emner som de har fulgt i inneværende semester? Arbeidsmengden er justert litt opp i forhold til i fjor og er nå på det nivå et 1o stp kurs bør ha.

4. På hvilken måte har eksamensformen relevans i forhold til læringsmål (hva skal

studentene kunne, og viser de dette gjennom gjeldende eksamensordning)? Eksamen legger opp til at de skal drøfte or reflektere, mer enn å teste dem i å huske detaljer. De får lov til å bruke hjelpemidler på eksamen, men det stilles da

strengere krav til refleksjon og forståelse. Språk- og skriveferdigheter gir en fordel i dette faget.

5. Hvordan har undervisningen som helhet fungert på emnet (egen innsats, nådde du de faglige og pedagogiske mål du hadde for emnet, tildeling av ressurser fra instituttet etc.)? Tilfredsstillende, men svakt engasjement fra studentene gjorde også undervisninga mindre spennende. Kommunikasjonen med studentene var vanskelig.

6. Har du forslag til tiltak som kan iverksettes for å bedre studiekvaliteten? Mer

skrivetrening.

7. Annet IFM- kullene varier fra år til år, med hensyn til bakgrunn, faglige forutsetninger og klassedynamikk. Dette er noe vi må leve med.
