Issue 18 15 June 2016 Tena koutou katoa, Yesterday I attended the first day of the Association of Proprietors of Integrated Schools of New Zealand conference in Wellington. I am grateful to the Board of Proprietors for this opportunity to connect with other principals across the country, but importantly to celebrate the significant difference schools of special character make to the lives of children. Paul Ferris, the new CEO of APIS was inspirational in his address regarding the need to celebrate our special character in all aspects of school life. He challenged those gathered to make overt, our life in Christ, across all aspects of teaching and learning. This includes, but transcends national standard data which overall is higher in special character schools. Integrated schools have a binding contract with the Crown and make up 11% of schools in New Zealand. As a group these schools represent significant choice for parents. The Rt Hon. Hekia Parata also addressed those gathered, and reinforced these observations and indicated she is seeking to embed the significance of the PSCIA (Private Schools Conditional Integration Act) into the Education Act. She highlighted the fact that McAuley High School, an integrated school, won the top award - Atahapara engagement award - at the recent Prime Minister’s Education Excellence Awards. As I sat and listened to all these speakers, I was guilty of allowing my head shift to you all at school, and how these tenets and facts rested in our school currently, and what we can do together in the future for the sake of all children and their whānau. Of course we stand together seeking excellence in teaching and learning and achievement. But this is an Anglican School with a call to mission for others and worship of a God who passes all understanding. The Five Marks of Anglican Mission are clear in this mission. The Minister of Education has signalled that this matters in education in Aotearoa, and I believe this demands an imperative in our conversations to work respectfully and prayerfully with others. This is particularly relevant as we gather next Wednesday 22nd June at 7.30pm to continue community conversations about what is important in our school as we move to self-governance. I ask you to consider how those conversations will reflect our special character, how our conversations can work with others to work out our mission in this place and achieve the best outcomes for children educationally and spiritually. By placing our children at the centre of these conversations in faith we can look forward with confidence.

And let’s celebrate our singing in church!!Last Friday the singing in our chapel of our national anthem and worship song “He came singing love” was “lift the roof off” stuff! Such an uplifting service lead by the singing of the whole school - our blessing!

Church Manager

St Christopher’s, AvonheadAnglican Diocese of Christchurch

St Christopher’s is an Anglican church with a variety of congregations and ministries that seek to provide space for everyone and anyone to know and love the Lord Jesus. We’re located in a diverse suburb close to the University of Canterbury and schools with whom we already have relationships, and we seek to reach and serve. We have evangelical roots that embrace a Christ-centred Mission, and our worship encompasses contemporary and traditional styles.

This role involves working alongside our recently appointed Vicar and Wardens, overseeing staff and providing administrative support across all aspects of our church life.

The position is part-time, 24 hrs per week, based on-site in our church offices and commences in July 2016. Remuneration will be based on qualifications and experience.

Working in a collaborative team environment overseeing 8–10 part-time staff, this role demands skilful leadership and proven management skills, and an ability to communicate effectively, prioritise tasks, delegate responsibilities, and build effective working relationships with staff and church members.

A knowledge of the Anglican church is desirable.
