    Introduction:

The general trend of most job seekers is to respond to job ads in the newspapers or job postings on theInternet. Or sometimes, when friends or relatives inform about vacancies, the job seeker submits his/herrsum and waits for a response from the employer.

It has been stated that 80% of available jobs are not advertised. At first, this sounds strange, but, this is notso. Very often, when the person making a decision about jobs, i.e. CEO, General Managers, etc. decide to

hire staff, they have to inform the head of human resources and that person has to put an ad in the media andso on. In the meanwhile, if a prospective candidate takes the initiative to meet the CEO, General Manager, etc. directly and presents himself/herself as a suitable candidate, chances are they could get hired evenbefore the job is advertised. This is the strategy on which I am making my presentation today.

    The 14 Steps:

The steps I present to you in this publication will enable you to achieve a foot in the door. What does thismean? It means that I am going to show you how to get an appointment with the decision maker, i.e. CEO,Head of Department, General Manager, etc. before the job is advertised. This way, you get the opportunity tomake a first good impression. Thereby, the CEO does not have to spend resources, time and money from theHR budget to recruit a candidate who has taken the initiative to do a pre-emptive strike in offeringhis/candidacy.

Some of the steps I will be speaking about are:

    Research

    Sending an appropriate letter/email

Preparing for the meeting with the CEO/Manager

Conducting the meeting in a professional manner (this includes suitably dressed, excellent handshake, good body language, high standard of dialogue and business discussion, etc.)

    Appropriate follow-up

    Conclusion:

If the steps I recommend are properly followed consistently, you can be assured of getting an interview and ajob. Remember, persistence pays rewards. You cannot give up if you get a few rejections. If you have senthundreds of rsums and not got a job, would it hurt you to send 50 letters and get the job that you want?

Good luck on your job hunting!

14 Steps to getting an interview and a job that you want!*

Step 1. Make a list of companies that you would like to work for and in the area that you would like toreside. For example, if you feel that you would like to work for companies in Mississauga, make alist of those companies.

Step 2. Go to the Mississauga Central Library on Burnhamthorpe Road (or any library in your area) and geta directory of businesses. You can ask the librarian and they will assist you. From the directory findout the following information on those companies whose list you made in Step 1 above and enterthem in your notebook or enter in a spreadsheet on your computer:

    The mailing address

The name of the President or CEO or General Manager, etc. (i.e. the top executive of thecompany)

The email address of the Executive

The Phone number of the Executive

Step 3. Research those companies on the Internet and find out as much information about the companyand the executives there. You will need this information to ask questions during your meeting withthe Executive.

Step 4. Prepare an introduction letter as per Appendix A (attached).

Step 5. After sending the above letter by email and by snail mail, wait for a few days and call up theExecutives office/secretary and draw his/her attention to your letter and request for a meeting.

Step 6. If you are not successful in speaking to the Executive directly, please inform the secretary that youwill be sending a follow up letter/email to the Executive because the later is waiting to hear fromyou. At this point leave your telephone number with the secretary.

Step 7. If you do not hear back from the Executive, send another letter/email as per Appendix B.

Step 8. If you do not hear back, make a note in your diary and send another follow up after 15 days.

Step 9. Go to the next company on your list you gathered in Step 1 above and follow the same steps.

Step 10. When you do get an interview with the Executive (and you will definitely get an interview if youpersistently follow the above steps!), you will go for the meeting in proper attire, if possible a

business suit. Remember, first impressions count and since you are going on a fact findingmission, you should dress up accordingly.

Step 11. Prepare a series of questions in advance based on the industry you have experience and practiceasking those questions in front of a mirror. One of your questions at the end should beMr./Ms.____ based on what I have heard from you, would you like me to provide you a list of valueadded services I could provide your organization to extend customer service and improve thebottom line?. If you prefer, offer to present the Executive with a proposal of what you have to offer(which is an extension of your rsum).

Step 12. At the end of your meeting with the Executive do not forget to ask the Executive if he/she has anyquestions for you. And remember to request for his/her business card and give yours as well!

Step 13. When you return home, do not forget to send an email and also call and thank the Executive forsparing the time to grant you a meeting/interview and follow up by sending a proposal (see step 11above).

Step 14. If you follow the above steps persistently, within two to three months you will be granted a properjob interview with the company that you want.

Good luck on your job hunting. You will be successful - if you are persistent!!
