Dear Firefighters;

The Suffolk County Volunteer Firemen’s Association Convention Committee welcomes all of you to the 138th annual Convention of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York.

The Suffolk County Volunteer Firemen’s Association Convention Committee had the pleasure of hosting the FASNY Convention previously in 1999. Everyone who attended that Convention had a great time, and we were very successful in providing an enjoyable event for all. We look forward to hosting another great Convention in 2010, which will be held on August 17th through the 20th.

The Hyatt Regency Wind Watch will serve as the host hotel of the FASNY Convention. This hotel is a state-of-the-art venue with luxurious guest rooms, fine dining, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and an eighteen-hole championship golf course at its back door. I assure everyone it is a great place to be, and I guarantee you will have a wonderful stay in Suffolk County. The LAFASNY Convention Headquarters will be in the Marriott Hotel, just a short walk from the Hyatt.

FASNY will offer numerous informational and educational opportunities during the Convention. Our local committee is working diligently to plan exciting activities for your stay in Suffolk County, including sightseeing tours to the North Fork Wineries, a trip to Montauk Point Lighthouse and the beaches of the South Fork and a fire department “battle of the bands” competition. We also have plenty of shopping malls, factory outlets and excellent restaurants close to our headquarters. As always, an exciting hospitality night is in the works for all to attend in our grand ballroom.

We are looking forward to you and your family joining us for a fantastic time at the 2010 FASNY Convention in Suffolk County.

Please feel free to call me at (631) 766-9090 should you have any questions or need any additional information regarding the Convention.

See all of you soon in Suffolk County.

The fire service has long acknowledged that the modern fireground continues to present new risk and challenges related to the safety and health of firefighters, yet few if any consider the risk of failed leadership. This high impact, high-energy program will address the issue of fireground leadership and provide critical information on what it takes to be a strong leader supportive of safety and survivability on the modern fireground. Included in this program are real-life incidents of failed leadership and the tragic results that followed. This program is a must for fire officers and anyone seeking to develop a safer, more effective fireground. Join Tim Sendelbach, a 23-year student and educator of fire and emergency services currently serving as Editor-in-Chief for FireRescue Magazine and President of TES2 Training & Education Services, as he leads you through a dynamic program dedicated to shaking firefighters out of stale thought patterns and processes.

neW: Fire service Training day WiTh naTionally recognized PresenTers

These days it seems everyone has an opinion on how fire departments should be operated, what funding is or isn’t needed and what fire departments should lose their local identity and CONSOLIDATE! And while in some cases, the arguments are purely for political reasons and have nothing to do with improving service to the public, it does force us as fire service leaders to CONSIDER and evaluate how we deliver services and conduct business.

Chief Otto Huber of the Loveland-Symmes Fire Department, which is a part of the North East Fire Collaborative, will be presenting an idea that may be of value to New York State fire service commissioners, chiefs and local officials. Chief Huber will share the story of how five fire chiefs and their local elected officials have formed an “ego-less” organization that improves fire and EMS services, increases staffing to fires and emergencies, greatly improves turn-out and response times and saves significant money in numerous areas from purchasing to training all while not losing their local fire department identity, “flavor” or community support. You will learn how the cities of Loveland, Mason, Blue Ash, Sharonville and the townships of Symmes and Sycamore have formed an alliance that has resulted in a safer, more cost-effective and overall more effective fire organization.

Thursday, augusT 19Th 8:00 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. Consolidate or Collaborate? Fire service Leaders Need to Drive the Train Chief Otto Huber, Loveland-Symmes Fire Department

Dunn and Stephens each have more than 20 years of career fire service experience and expertise with the Utica Fire Department. This course is aimed at addressing the tactical techniques needed to fight various types of vehicle fires.
