Active Safety Everything designed to help preventaccidents from happening.Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) When braking, wheel speed sensors measure the road wheel speed and should oneor more wheels start to lock the ABS system reduces brake pressure to that wheel.This prevents the wheels from locking during heavy or emergency braking, enablingthe vehicle to remain steerable.

Brake AssistDuring emergency braking, Brake Assist aids the driver by increasing the brakepressure automatical ly to a level exceeding the locking limit. The ABS is thusquickly brought into the operating range, which enables maximum vehicledeceleration to be achieved.

01. Take it easy and save. Drive the modern way and think ahead. Aggressive driving hard braking and acceleration, sudden lane changes andunpredictable behaviour is also fuel-inefcient driving. Instead, take a modernapproach: predictive driving. Drive smoothly, watching as far ahead as youcan to anticipate hazards and other events; cruise with the trafc and use yourmomentum to help you arrive sa fe and relaxed.

02. Change up early and ll up later. Drive in the highest gear possible.If you have a manual transmission, work your way up through the gears as quickly as you can. Change into second gear once youve moved forward a car length, andcruise in the highest gear thats practical. Its like riding a bike cruising at low revsuses far less energy than pedaling hard all the time. With an automatic, reduceexcessive acceleration and avoid a kick down.

03. Just let it roll. Use overrun fuel cuto ff.

With the right driving techniques you can really start saving. The overrun fuelcutoff feature interrupts fuel supply to the engine so that not a single drop of fuelis used. Simply take your foot off of the accelerator, keeping your car in gear whencoasting down hills or towards trafc lights. This will reduce your fuel usage.

04. Comfort high, fuel consumption low. Use auxiliary equipment in moderation. We all love our sound systems, air conditioning and other creature comforts, butthey all use energy, which ultimately means that they al l consume fuel. Turn off seat heaters and de-misters once theyve done their job. Open your windows for

a moment or two as you drive off in summer to let the hot air circulate out beforereaching for the air conditioning. Check your route before you get going and theequipment youre using if you dont need it, consider turning it off.

06. A warm engine a cool way to save. Avoid short trips.Many short trips means higher fuel consumption. Why? Because cold engines runless efciently, and lots of short trips means your engine will spend much moretime running cold. Plan your errands to minimise the number of trips you needto make and youll save yourself time and stress as well as fuel and emissions.(Its unnecessary to run the engine just to warm it up as it doesnt reduce fuelconsumption and is environmentally unfriendly.)

05. Savings are in the air. Check your tyre pressures.Checking your ty re pressures before driv ing off can pay big dividends when itcomes to cutting fuel consumption. Under-inated tyres massively increaserolling resistance, forcing your car to work harder (and burn more fuel) just tomove down the road. If youre buying new tyres, look out for those with lowerrolling resista nce. Keeping your tyres in good order can help you save fuel before youve even driven of f!

07. Well-oiled for impressive savings. Use Volkswagen approved engine oils. A well-lubricated engine produces less emissions than a poorly lubricatedengine, especially when the weather is cold or the trip is short. Volkswagen Approved engine oils circulate easi ly, helping reduce fuel consumption andemissions. So make sure you use Volkswagen Approved engine oils and makesure you stick to your cars recommended oil change intervals.

08. Keep it sleek. Cut aerodynamic drag. Aerodynamics ca n have a signicant impact on fuel consumption, especially on

longer trips. So make sure you take your roof racks, bike racks, roof boxes andother attachments off your car when theyre not in use. And keep windows up(and sunroofs closed) when cruising, as the air turbulence they create increasesdrag and hence, fuel consumption. Youll feel the di fference as you drive and youll see the difference at t he fuel bowser.

09. Lightly does it. Avoid unnecessary weight.Every ki logram you load into your car takes energy to move energy that will besupplied by burning fuel. You dont want to be caught short of items you need,but theres no point in lugg ing around your golf clubs, tent, portable barbecueand ful l tool box just in case. Pare your regular load down to the minimum andenjoy the space as well as the fuel savings.

Glossary.4MOTION An all-wheel-drive system that provides the best possibletraction at all road speeds, in a ll weather and roadconditions. An electronic Haldex clutch responds to tractionlosses at the front and rear axles and di rects torque to theaxle with the best traction.

Adaptive Chassis Control*The electricall y controlled dampers of adaptive chassiscontrol constantly adjust to the road conditions, the driving

situation and drivers requirements. Using a button locatedon the centre console, the driver selects between threedamper settings NORMAL, COMFORT and SPORT.

Starting from the normal setting, the driver ca n changethe basic character of the ca r towards sporty or morecomfort-oriented driving. In SPORT and COMFORT settings,the corresponding name is illuminated in t he button.In NORMAL setting, only the shock absorber symbol isillumin ated. In all settings, the adaptive chassis controladjusts the damping to the particular dr iving situation(up till one thousand times per second) which means itoffers an optimum level of driv ing comfort and enjoyment

at all ti mes. In addition, in the SPORT setting the steeringfeel is also adapted. Particularly on w indy roads and poorsurfaces, using adaptive chassis control offers sporty and yetcomfortable driving.

Extended Electronic Di fferential Lock (XDL) XDL is an extension of the Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) function. When cornering, XDL responds to the loadrelief at the front wheel on the inside of a corner. The ESPhydraulics a re used for the XDL to apply pressure to the

wheel on the inside of the corner i n order to prevent wheelspin. This improves tract ion and reduces the tendency toundersteer. As a direct result of the one-sided and precisebraking pressure, cornering is sportier and more accurate.

Hill Start Assist (HSA)Hill Start Assist (HSA) holds the vehicle when the foot brakeis released by temporari ly locking the brake pressure (for amaxi mum of 1.5 seconds) to provide comfortable start ing-off without rolling back. Hil l Start Assist (HSA) operateson inclines greater than 5% and is tted in combination with both the manual transmission and the Direct ShiftGearbox (DSG).

Park Assist*Park Assist actively helps the driver when reversing intoparal lel parking spaces. The system works by using sensorsmounted either side of the front bumper together with park ingdistance sensors front and rear. To paral lel park the driverneeds to press the Park Assist button and use the appropriateindicator before the car passes the potential park ing space.Sensors in the front bumper then scan the size of the parkingspace as the car is driven slowly past and the driver is alerted if the parking space is big enough. If there is sufcient space, thedriver stops the ca r, selects reverse and lets go of the steering wheel.

Park Assist wil l alert the driver of the intended reverse path inthe Multi-Function Display, within the dr ivers eld of vision.Park Assist then actively supports the driver by taki ng over thesteering control and parks the vehicle in the available spaceusing the ideal course, if necessary w ith several moves. Thedriver can however take over the control of the steering at any time and end the automatic parking procedure. The systemcan reverse into parking spaces on both the left hand and righthand side of the road, for example on one way st reets.

Park Assist cannot replace the drivers attentiveness. The driver is stil l legally responsible for the vehicle. If the driver notices a risk that pedestrians, ot her vehiclesor objects could be damaged or if they are uncertain of the risk, t hey will need to reactaccordingly and stop the vehicle, ending the function.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) When braking, wheel speed sensors measure the road wheelspeed and should one or more wheels start to lock the ABSsystem reduces brake pressure to that wheel. This preventsthe wheels from locking during heavy or emergency braking,

enabling the vehicle to remain steerable.Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) ASR is a switchable tract ion control system that preventsthe wheels from spinning under acceleration by reducingengine torque.

Brake AssistDuring emergency braking, Brake Assist aids the driverby increasing the brake pressure automatically to a levelexceeding the locking l imit. The ABS is thus quickly broughtinto the operating range, which enables maximum vehicledeceleration to be achieved.

Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG)DSG is a manual gearbox in which the gearshif ts arecontrolled electronically. What makes t he DSG unique isthat it has 2 separate gear sets operated by 2 multi-plateclutches. The benet of 2 gear sets and 2 multi-plate clutchesis that one gear set and clutch is engaged driving the vehicle with the second clutch having already pre-selected the nextgear awaiting for power to be transferred. As the next gearhas al ready been pre-selected prior to power being applied,the gear change only ta kes 3-4 100ths of a second. There isvir tually no interruption to power, traction or acceleration.The DSG also offers Tiptronic gear selection and sports mode.

Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution (EBD)Electronic, more sophisticated means of regulating the ratioof front/rear brake pressure. Settings are varied according todriv ing and load conditions to ensure each wheel is braked tothe optimum extent.

Electronic Differential Lock (EDL)EDL improves driving and steering characteristics whenaccelerating on road surfaces where each wheel has a differentdegree of traction. The system operates automatically and i scombined with the ABS system. Using the ABS wheel sensors,EDL monitors the speed of the individual driv ing wheels. When a dif ference in driv ing wheel speed is detected (i.e. when

one wheel starts to spin due to differences in road sur faces,e.g. due to water or dir t) the system brakes the spinning wheel,transferring engine power to the wheel with the best traction.

Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP) ABS and ASR traction control systems are integrated into theElectronic Stabilisation Program (ESP). In short, ESP helpsensure that the vehicle goes where you steer it even in extremedriving conditions. The ESP system constantly compares theactual movement of the vehicle with pre-determined values andshould a situation arise where the vehicle starts to skid, ESP wil lapply the brakes to individual wheels and automatically adjustthe engines power output to correct the problem. ESP prevents

the vehicle from losing control when try ing to avoid an accident,for example. It also prevents spinning off on a curve due to eitherundersteer or oversteer.
