Dick WeberOpen

FOUNTAIN VALLEY—Fountain Bowl in Fountain Val-ley, Calif., has hosted many spe-cial Denny’s ProfessionalBowlers Association (PBA)Tour events in the past, but nonewill be as memorable as the2006 Dick Weber Open. Theunique event, which takes placeJan. 10-15, 2006, will pay trib-ute to the PBA Hall of Famerand 26-time Tour title winnerwho passed away Feb. 14, 2005.

The 2006 Dick Weber Openis one of just two Denny’s PBATour events to be held on thewest coast this season, and it’sthe only one in the west open toboth PBA members and ama-teurs. The format for the eventwill take on a “throwback” feel, with participants bowling 15games of qualifying over threefive-game sessions, after whichthe top 24 advance to roundrobin match play.

“[Dick Weber’s] achieve-ments on the lanes are equaledand surpassed only by his legacyoff the lanes. He was a greatcompetitor and champion, andhe was an outstanding ambassa-dor for our sport,” PBA Com-missioner and CEO FredSchreyer said of Weber. “Moreimportantly, Dick was a trulygood, compassionate personwho treated everyone like fam-ily.”

The event begins with theofficial PBA Practice Sessionand PBA Pro-Ams taking placeTuesday, Jan. 10. On Wednes-day, Jan. 11, the entire field willbowl two five-game qualifyingsessions before bowling a thirdfive-game block on Thursday,Jan. 12. After 15 games, the top24 qualifiers will advance toround robin match play Thurs-day evening.

Friday, Jan. 13 will featuretwo additional round robinmatch play sessions, after whichthe top four bowlers will ad-vance to the championshipround. Saturday, Jan. 14 is a dayfor the fans with official PBAPro-Am sessions taking place

throughout the day.The ESPN live televised fi-

nals will take place Sunday, Jan.15 at 10 a.m. PST and feature astep-ladder finals format.Bowlers will be vying for apiece of the $150,000 prize fund(based on 160 entries) and anexemption for the 2006-07Denny’s PBA Tour season.

Bowlers looking to enter the2006 Dick Weber Open can doso by visiting the PBA’s officialwebsite, www.pba.com, andclicking on the “Enter Tourna-ment” button at the top of thehomepage. PBA members canalso use the entry form found inthe bi-monthly PBA Newsletter, and both members and non-members can contact the PBA’smain office at (206) 332-9688.

It’s only fitting the Tour isholding an event in DickWeber’s honor. Weber, bornDec. 23, 1929, was a PBA Char-ter Member and enjoyed a sto-ried career, capturing 26Denny’s PBA Tour titles and sixPBA Senior Tour titles. He waselected to the United StatesBowling Congress (USBC) Hallof Fame in 1970 and was in-ducted into the PBA Hall ofFame in 1975.

In addition, Weber won theBPAA All-Star (The U.S.Open’s predecessor) on four oc-casions, was named the Bowlerof the Year three times (1961,’63 and ’65) and won the PBAPlayer of the Year Award in1965. He also is the only bowlerin history to win a PBA title infive different decades.

The world’s best bowlerswill be on hand to bowl and paytribute to Dick Weber, includinghis son Pete. He recentlysnapped a 26-event winlessstreak when he won his 32ndcareer Tour title in the 2005BowlersParadise.com Classic. The win added to his over-whelming list of titles and ac-colades, but a victory in theevent dedicated to his father’smemory would trump any of hisprevious accomplishments.

“Get your attention with a pretty girl. Hey! That’s my daughter.”Terri Del Conte - Volleyball Bon-Vivant

Cerritos College Sophomore in 2006!

To Out Planet --It has been a busy year – my daughter is 19 years old,

made 1st Team All-League Volleyball in college; my sonis half a year from being a fireman; my secretary Dottieis still the fastest pair of feet and sweeter than ever, so Ihave no complaints.

We lost a few of our Old Timer’s – Chris from Chris’Angels League and Otha’s father who always wore asmile. Wish the passing would stop for just a year.

I directed my first feature INNOCENCE, and it isgood… and in February 2006, I will begin my secondfeature entitled “Nov. 2nd: Death Calls” It is a Roman-tic-Adventure-Twilight Zone-Love Story on the Mexi-can border. Great actors, 35 m.m – the Big Time.

Hope that U.S.C. Football does not stop or get cockywhen they play mighty Texas in the Rose Bowl on Jan.4th, 2006. “Play to Win” – that’s the motto.

Love to my injury-prone brothers, our cool bowlersand nutty friends. Saddleback Lanes remains a fine, beautiful Bowling Center – will they challenge us againin Bowling?

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL….From Saddleback Lanes and

Gage Bowl’s Harvey Hemmingsen

Remembers His Bowling Years

NORWALK — HarveyHemmingsen will be 99 yearsold on July 19, 2007. He wasborn in 1907 in North Dakota(no post office, market or townat that time). When a teen, hisfamily moved to Eugene, Or-egon where he got his first tasteof the bowling game by gettinga job as a pin setter, but he didnot bowl then.

He attended high school for1 1/2 years, quit school and wentto work as a painter, paintingcars and houses for $10 perweek. He did this until 1927when he moved to San Fran-cisco, California. He took upinterior decorating but did notpursue this career. He movedfrom San Francisco to Los An-geles with a buddy, called apainter friend, and obtained ajob painting houses in the areaof Central and Manchester Av-enues. He married in 1935 buthis wife passed away. An open-ing for painting cars becameavailable with Hal Roach &Jimmy Dickens ChevrotletDealership, and he worked therefor two years.

In 1942, he went to work forNorthrup Aircraft during WorldWar II and retired in 1972 after30 years. Harvey married thelove of his life in 1970, and losther to cancer after 20 years of awonderful marriage.

It was while working atNorthrup that he begam bowl-ing. He bowled at Missile Bowlin Gardena and with his teamearned a multitude of first placetrophies. To be on this team, youhad to maintain an average of179 or higher. He not onlybowled at Missile, but at otherlanes in the area. In the mid-70’s,he and his team were asked tobowl at another house becausethey kept taking first place andother teams voted that Harvey’steam leave so they would havea chance. He and his teammatesstarted attending Arena, Cen-tury, Trianon and Gage Bowls. In the 80’s, he teamed up withanother senior member (TexBarker, 92) and limited theirbowling to two houses, theTrianon and Gage. After Trianonclosed, they made Gage Bowltheir home and have won sev-eral first place championships.Currently carrying a 141 aver-age.

Harvey says he has a houseful of trophies and is proud thathe has achieved them in the sporthe loves. He is a widower andlives alone, still drives a car, andis very spry for a man his age.He was not asked what attrib-uted to his longevity, but it is feltthat he lived well and continuesto do so.

National Deaf Bowling NewsDon Ketter Hits 765 In Olathe League

OLATHE…Word was received that Don Ketter, the former 1997Deaf Team USA member and coach of the victorious 2001 Italy

Deaflympics Deaf Team USA which swept all the men’s bowlinggold medals is getting better day by day. A year after that he wasstricken by some kind of inflamed ailment, which made him stopweekly bowling until last year he came back slowly this season.

In late 2000 Ketter bowled on the Flying Hands deaf team thatscored a deaf team record 3305 series in a Olathe league. He thoughthis team was the first deaf team to break the 3300 barrier, only tofind that St Louis deaf five men hit a 3302 earlier in the year. Thenas the coach he watched his Deaf Team USA broke his Flying Fin-gers team record when they rolled a Deaflympics record first 3games 3326 at Italy. This record was broken last April by Fast N’Furious team from Detroit which scored 3334 in the Great LakesDeaf Tournament at Merrillville, Ind.

As reported last September Ketter started off this season verywell. Then last November 28 in his Olathe Automotive League herolled 226-278-182 for 686. One can guess he did not like the wayhe finished in his 3rd game.

The following week in the same league Ketter finished better, rolling a 765 series from games of 221-267-277. That is his highestseries in past 4 years. Prior to 2001 he had better series of 781 atAMF College Lanes in Overland Park, 777 at Olathe West Lanesand 776 at Olathe East Lanes.

His 765 pulled his average up to 214, currently 4th in his leagueand the top guy has 219. Ketter aims to finish at the top at the endof season. Let us hear from him when he does.

NO 800 BUT BOB JONES 785 LED DEAF TRAVEL ATAMF BOWLING SQUARE

ARCADIA…The lanes at AMF Bowling Square are darker thanother centers So. Calif. Deaf Traveling League travels to and thatconfused the bowlers and gave them a learning lesson. Not one ofthe travel bowlers hit an 800 for 4 games but league average leaderBob Jones came 15 pins short with his 785 from games of 204-238-186-157.

The lanes were not a problem to both Jones and Darrell Stogrynwho matched against each other with their teams being tied for 2ndplace. Stogryn had 741 from 233-189-159-160 as both bowlersstarted well but both struggled in last two games. Stogryn had bet-ter help from teammate Paul Taffolla’s 203 and their El CaminoVillage won the team series by 4 pins for a 11 to 9 points victoryover Jones’ S. F. Valley.

The lanes did bother Gardy Rodgers and John Segafredo whosubbed for Andy Lorenzo (eye surgery). Both began badly, Rodgerswith 161 and Segafredo 146 but both did better, Rodgers 234-174-209 for 778 and Segafredo 226-191-201 for 764 to place 2nd and3rd on the honor roll. Their Los Angeles scored the day’s high teamgame 600 and the day’s only 2000 team series, 2102 as they bestHollywood 13 to 7. Rick Pennington and Dan Flores both had 203games for Hollywood.

The league leader, South Bay with Pablo Yoma’s 238-196-158-168 for 760 and 5 points, swept all team games form Riverside fora 15 to 5 win. Riverside’s Robert Audette had 2003. South Baynow leads by 10 points over El Camino Village as the league goesa long bye through the holidays until January 8th at Canoga ParkBowl.

In the meantime the league need a deaf bowler with less than168 book average to finish the season. Any one with that averagecan contact me at TDD 818-785-1478.Del Rosa Srs.
