Second Sunday of Easter

April 8, 2018

John 20:19-31

Dear Members of Saint Mary, “How beautiful will be the day when all the baptized understand that their work, their job, is a priestly work, that just as I celebrate Mass at this altar, so each carpenter celebrates Mass at his workbench, and each metalworker, each professional, each doctor with the scalpel, the market woman at her stand, is performing a priestly office! How many cabdrivers, I know, listen to this message there in their cabs; you are a priest at the wheel, my friend, if you work with honesty, consecrating that taxi of yours to God, bearing a message of peace and love to the passengers who ride in your cab.” – Blessed Oscar Romero. Today we celebrate the mystery of the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. This is the Paschal Mystery of God’s power definitively revealed as life given away, life that not even death can conquer. Blessed Oscar Romero reminds us that in Baptism we are conformed in the Holy Spirit to Christ, that we are anointed as members of a holy priesthood. Jesus is the priest that offers his life back to God and to us. We are the priests who offer that same life to God and one another. May God continue to bless this holy place called Saint Mary Parish where the Paschal Mystery of Jesus is revealed in our faithful, loving service to each other, to South County, and to the world. I wish a blessed Easter to all!

Domingo de Pascua de Resurrección del Señor

Lecturas para la Próxima Semana

Segundo Domingo de Pascua Abril 8, 2018

1 Juan 5:1-6 Juan 20:19-31

This weekend Lent has ended and we witness the Resurrection of Jesus and our hope to follow Him. John’s dramatic gospel account has Mary Magdalene shocked by the empty tomb. She fears someone has stolen the body. John concludes this experience with the telling line: “They did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead.” Our church leaves us in suspense, even though we have heard this story for as many Easters as we have been alive to celebrate them. Over Easter dinner, egg hunts, family time in the park, we are called to contemplate and commemorate this miracle of miracles: Jesus Christ is risen from the dead! He is risen! When we believe and tell this story, how compelling it is! Who could turn away from our call, Jesus’ call, to follow him? As with the disciples, we are to drop everything and follow him, that is, make Jesus number one in our hearts and our minds. When our hearts burn with the story, the kerygma, of God’s great love for us, we cannot keep ourselves from telling it with great joy, confidence, and hope. When we sit at the bedside of someone of faith who is very ill or is dying, as I have done, and we see the serenity and peace of someone who truly believes, we are filled with hope!

God bless you in your efforts to live our Easter values.

Hooray for Easter Many thanks to all who gave us flowers and flowering plants for our Easter decor. Donors include Syngenta Flowers, Stems Floral Boutique, Sheila and Steve White, the Saint Mary’s

Catholic Ladies, and numerous other donors of flowers and money. Thank you so much for your help! All our wonderful decorations team who worked so hard to transform our desert environment: Elaine Burce, Sheila White, Elizabeth Paiva, Lillian and Carlos Paiva, Lori & Steve Parshall, and all who came Holy Saturday to work for hours. Our choirs for Triduum have been preparing for months: Holy Thursday under the direction of Jordi Vidales, Good Friday under the direction of Carol Harris, Easter Vigil, directed by Carlos Barba and all of our Easter Sunday choirs. Thanks a million for making our Easter transformative!

Women in Black If you ever drive by the parish on Friday, you may notice the women standing on the corner of Monterey and First. They hold signs about peace and opposing war. This is our local chapter of the international Women in Black movement. Founded by mothers in Palestine who have lost children to war, the movement has spread throughout the world. These women stand in silent vigil, praying for an end to war. You are welcome to join, any Friday at 5:00pm.

Weekend Liturgy Questions/Comments — 4/1/18 1. As your alleluias ring out today, feel the spirit of rejoicing in every

muscle and every cell of your body. For a moment, let go and feel what it is to be fully and completely basking in the glow of God’s grace.

2. So often we hold back from immersing ourselves in the liturgy. Wholeheartedly, allow the spirit of celebration to take over. As you sing and proclaim alleluia really mean it! How do you like to celebrate?

3. What did you notice about how the church looked today? How did it seem joyful?

As part of our Lenten journey, we observed the Stations of the Cross each week. The Stations of the Cross are a 14-step Catholic devotion that commemorates Jesus Christ’s last day on Earth as man. The 14 devotions, or stations, focus on specific events of His last day beginning with His

condemnation. During this holy season, each of our classes took part in acting out the series of religious reflections in preparation for Easter.

No Religious Education Classes

No classes this Easter weekend, Sunday, April 1st or Monday, April 2nd. Classes will resume on Sunday, April 8th and Monday, April 9th

May our families in our program have a blessed and joyful Easter.
