Sunday Collection October 15, 2017

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

October 29, 2017 Exodus 22:20-26

1 Thessalonians 1:5C-10 Matthew 22:34-40

Dear Members of St Mary, As you read this I am in the Holy Land. As I write this on Monday night I am filled with an-ticipation. I have never been there before! I am also filled with gratitude for the response to the appeal for funds to convert the priests’ garage into a youth center. To date we have $12,828 toward the $60,000 needed to begin con-struction. Besides the second collection on October 8th, gifts are coming in almost every day--$100, $500, and one parishioner has given $5,000! I am giving $1,000. If you have not contribut-ed yet, I ask for your help. The teens need their special space! It will be a deserved legacy to the next generation of church leaders. Our hearts are broken again. The fire devastation in northern California has reminded us again that life is fragile and the only way to recover is together. Cardinal Newman High School and Saint Rose Elementary in the Diocese of Santa Rosa were destroyed. We pray for the dead and for all those affected; the second collection this weekend will be for the Diocese of Santa Ro-sa. Please keep me and the other 27 pilgrims in your prayers. Because of you, Gilroy is holy land too and I will be happy to return. Fr Robert Samuel

Vigésimo - Noveno Domingo en Tiempo Ordinario

Lecturas para la Próxima Semana

Octubre 29, 2017 Éxodo 22:20-26

1 Tesalonicenses 1:5C-10 Mateo 22:34-40

Estimados Miembros de Santa María,

Al leer esto ustedes, estoy en Tierra Santa. Mientras escribo esto el lunes por la noche, estoy lleno de anticipación. ¡Nunca he estado ahí antes!

P. Robert Samuel

Our screens certainly make it easy to join the Main Choir—all of us in the pews. I appreciate the diligence of our choirs in providing slides and Carlos Barba for creating the announcement slide show. Parishioners sometimes ask about showing information on our screens. Here are some requests and the reasons we don’t.

• Ads for local businesses. We sometimes thank local businesses who have sponsored events or projects, but a more appropriate place for this is here in the bulletin.

• The readings. While we do show the readings in the other language at bilingual Masses, it is not appropriate at regular Sunday Masses. Why? Our readings become the Word of God when they are proclaimed and heard. For those who don’t hear so well, we have the missalettes at the doors for your convenience in reading along. If you’d like to prepare before Mass by reading the day’s scriptures, we cite them in the previous week bulletin. We ask all our lectors to prepare in this way. Maybe you really liked a reading and would like to go over it. Usccb.org, the US Bishops’ website, gives you a searchable copy of the Bible in English and Spanish and also the readings by day. This is a great way to find the scripture you just heard or look up the readings that are coming up.

• Contact phone numbers or email addresses. We find the bulletin or flyers at the doors to be a more practical place for these. It’s difficult to copy a string of numbers from the slides, which keep moving.

• Upcoming events at other parishes or churches. We seldom do this because we have plenty of events right here in our parish. Our first commitment is to our parish.

I hope this information helps you understand our process for slide creation and gives your scripture study a boost. God bless your efforts to be disciples.

Weekend Liturgy Questions/Comments — 10/22/17 1. We see sneaky Pharisees trying to catch Jesus in a trap. They do

not succeed, however. There is no way to get around the truth; it will always prevail.

2. Over and over, Jesus reminds us to think outside the box and not compromise our values or our ability to be present and a force for good in society. Is there a way to reflect the sacred in the way you live? How?

3. Have you ever felt caught in a trap? Where did you turn for help?

The garden will be used by teachers at all grade levels to enhance their science curriculum, and after our garden starts producing, we hope to be able to

donate fresh fruit and vegetables to St. Joseph Family Center. Due to the hard work of Chair Megan Patzoldt and her fantastic volunteers, we have built 7 garden boxes and filled them with organic soil generously donated by Z-Best Composting and sand donated by Melo’s Concrete. Thank you!!
