SURAH AL-HASHR (THE GATHERING)

MEDINAN PERIOD

Division: 605389

1All that is in the Heavens and on the Earth exonerates Allah. And He is the Most Exalted, the Almighty, the Most Honorable, the Invincible/the Subduer, the Best Law-Maker, the One Who precludes corruption best/makes incorruptible.

2Allah is the One Who expelled those from among the Companions of the Scripture who disbelieved the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] out of their lands for the first gathering. You did not expect them to be expelled. And they surely believed that their castles would protect them against Allah but the wrath of Allah seized them from a direction they least expected. And Allah cast fear to their hearts that they would demolish their own houses with their very hands and also by the hands of the believers. O you who have common sense! Take warning!

3And had Allah not decreed exile for them, He would certainly have punished them while they were on the Earth. And the wrath of the Fire will be for them in Akhirat [Afterlife].

4Then the reason of the exile in the world and the punishment of fire in Akhirat [Afterlife] is their denial and refusal of Allah and His Messenger. And whoever denies and turns away from Allah should know that severe is the punishment/retribution of Allah.

5And all that you cut from date palms or that you leave them on their trunks is by the will/knowledge of Allah so He may disgrace those who have gone astray from the righteous path.

6And the Fai [revenues yielded without fighting and making any effort] Allah has bestowed upon His Messenger; you have not ridden horses nor camels for it; you have not made an effort. But, Allah inflicts His messengers upon whomever He pleases. And Allah is the Omnipotent.

7,8And the Fai [revenues yielded without fighting and making any effort] Allah has bestowed upon His Messenger belong only to Allah, the Messenger, his relatives; travelling paupers –who have been expelled out of their homes and deprived of their wealth while seeking for the gifts and acceptance of Allah, and they help Allah and

His Messenger. They are the righteous ones-, orphans, the poor and travelers so it is not distributed to the rich among you as the convenience brought by the nation; the authority. Whatever the Messenger gives you take it immediately. And whatever he forbids you stay away from it. And surrender under the guardianship of Allah. Surely, severe is the punishment/retribution of Allah.

9Those who settled that land and adopted the faith before them love those who have emigrated to them and do not have any want in their hearts for that which has been given to them. even though they are in need of it, they prefer them over themselves. And whoever avoids stinginess of his very soul is the one who has succeeded.

10And those who settled after the people of the Prophet’s era say: “O our Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]! Forgive us and our brothers who have preceded us in faith, do not put in our hearts hatred for those who have believed! O our Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]! Surely, You are the Most Kind, the Most Merciful, the Protector, the One Who Facilitates, the Possessor of Vast Mercy!”.

11Have you not seen/thought about those infidels who say to your brothers among the Companions of the Scripture who disbelieve the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]: “Surely, should you be expelled out of your lands, we shall go with you and we shall not obey forever anyone against you. Should you be fought, we shall surely help you”? and Allah testifies that they are surely liars.

12Surely, should they be expelled, they shall not go with them. and surely, should they be fought, they shall not help them; surely, even if they should help, they shall surely turn away and flee. Then they shall not be helped.

13Surely, you are more fearsome in their eyes than Allah. The reason they fear you more than Allah is that they a people who barely understand.

14-16They would not fight against you together but fight you in fortified cities or behind walls. Severe is the conflict among them as much as of those have tasted the consequence of their sins just before them and thus will have a painful punishment in Akhirat [Afterlife]. And you think they are together but their hearts are scattered as in the example of Satan who says to the people: “Blaspheme; consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer]” and when they blaspheme and consciously deny the Divinity of Allah and the fact that He is Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer],

says: “I am away from you; surely, I fear Allah, Rabb [the Lord, the Cherisher, the Nurturer, the Sustainer] of all universes”. Thus it is as they are the people who do not reason.

17And the end of both of them is to abide in the Fire eternally. And this is the punishment of those who do wrong; act against their own good by associating others with Allah and blaspheming.

18,19O you who have believed! Surrender under the guardianship of Allah; and let every soul look to what it has prepared for tomorrow. And surrender under the guardianship of Allah. Surely, Allah is aware of what you do. And do not be like those who do not care about Allah: thus will Allah make them not care about themselves. They are the transgressing ones.

20Not equal are the Companions of the Fire and the Companions of Jannah [Heaven/Paradise]. The Companions of Jannah [Heaven/Paradise] are the saved ones.

21Had We revealed the Qur’an onto a mountain/a towering authorized creature, you would certainly have seen it prostrating in awe out of respect, love and knowledge of Allah and scattered. And We have given the people these examples so they may contemplate.
