Melinda Gates serves as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda GatesFoundation. She helps shape and approve foundation strategies,review results, advocate for foundation issues, and set theoverall direction of the organization. She received a bachelor’sdegree from Duke University in 1986 and a master’s degree inbusiness administration from Duke’s Fuqua School of Businessin 1987. Since retiring from Microsoft in 1996, she has dedicatedher energy toward the nonpro t world.

Originally from Sierra Leone, the hip-hop group Bajah + TheDry Eye Crew are known for speaking out against political andsocial injustices. They are hailed as “the voice of the voiceless,”speaking truths on behalf of those people who have no politicalpower, spreading messages of peace and reconciliation, andinspiring the disenfranchised youth of Sierra Leone to pursuetheir dreams. Their unique sound blends the swagger and funkof hip-hop, the passion and energy of dancehall, and the sociallyconscious vibe of reggae. Their international debut album,featuring artists such as ?uestlove (of The Roots), K’Naan, TalibKweli, and Nneka, will be out February 2011.In Sierra Leone, the term “dry eye” connotes boldness.

Mechai Viravaidya is the founder and chairman of the Populationand Community Development Association (PDA). He is a widelyacclaimed leader in the elds of public health, education,and community development. Since 1974, he has initiatedcommunity-based family planning services, innovative povertyreduction and rural education programs, large-scale ruraldevelopment and environmental programs, and groundbreakingHIV/AIDS prevention activities throughout Southeast Asia.

Graça Machel is a renowned international advocate for women’sand children’s rights and has been a social and political activistfor decades. She is president of the Foundation for CommunityDevelopment, which makes grants to civil society organizationsto strengthen communities, facilitate social and economic justice,and assist in the reconstruction and development of post-warMozambique. Following its independence in 1975, she servedas Mozambique’s Minister of Education and Culture and wassubsequently appointed as the expert in charge of producing thegroundbreaking United Nations Report on the Impact of ArmedCon ict on Children. In 2007, along with Nelson Mandela andother members, including Desmond Tutu, Ko Annan, and JimmyCarter, Machel helped found The Elders, a group of world leadersconvened to contribute their wisdom, leadership, and integrity totackle some of the world’s toughest problems.
