A CONCRETE SOLUTION TO HUMANITY’S POLLUTIONby John Dvorrak

www.hempology.org

Worldwide, the construction industry is one of the largest producers of greenhouse gas. Portland Ce-

ment, the most common type of cement, is made by heat-ing limestone and other ingredients to over 2,500 degrees. The production of one ton of cement releases one ton of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. Fortunately, there is a “new” concrete prod-uct made from hemp that not only sequesters CO2 during its growing cycle, but also has a carbon-negative footprint when used in construction. In addi-tion, hemp concrete has numer-ous other beneficial properties.

Hemp hurds, which make up the inner part of the hemp stalk, are 70% cellulose. Mix-ing crushed hemp hurds with lime and water creates a pulpy mixture that can be used for constructing floors and walls as well as insulating roofs Hemp concrete is an excellent insulat-ing material. It is comparable to the petrochemical based pink fiberglass insulation, which is a skin and lung irritant. Hemp concrete is vapor permeable or “breathable,” which avoids condensation problems like mold and rot. This char-acteristic passively regulates the temperature of a structure, reducing heating and cooling demands. Hemp hurds react with lime to create a fire resistant material that has been tested for one hour and 40 minutes without failing. Hemp concrete is recyclable. It can be crushed and used as fertil-izer or reused for other building projects. This means you can use your old house to fertilize the hemp that can be

used to build your new house. An area the size of a football field can grow enough hemp to build an average size house.

While hemp concrete is new to America, it has been used in Europe for hundreds of years and for the past 20+ years, England, France, Switzerland and Germany have been documenting the environmental benefits of build-ing with hemp. Several homes were constructed of hemp concrete in Watford England as part of an experiment to measure energy usage compared to houses built using tradi-tional building materials. Initial results show a considerable reduction in energy usage. The Adnams brewery distribu-tion warehouse in England was built out of hemp concrete, which minimizes its temperature fluctuations. As a result, an $800,000 air conditioning/heating unit did not have to be installed and annual electricity expenses have been re-duced by over $50,000.

In 2010, three beautiful hemp houses were built in Asheville, North Carolina by Hemp Technologies, Inc. The construction of these houses has generated a tremendous amount of media attention. Several hemp concrete projects are underway or planned across North America as build-ers increasingly seek environmentally friendly construction

alternatives. Hemp concrete’s potential to become a hugely popular and profitable product could benefit those who get in on the ground floor of the industry. Unfortunately, the prohibition of hemp cultivation in America means hemp hurds have to be imported, resulting in a higher price than if it was grown domestically. Despite this, hemp is literally and figuratively laying the foundation for a greener society.▀

John dvorak has been researching and writing about industrial hemp

for over 15 years. His website, Hempology.Org focuses on hemp history

as well as his recently developed cannabis curriculum that encourages

research into all aspects of cannabis hemp and its prohibition.

Name: ‘Ceasar’

Location: Greenwich Bay Area

Q: Is there a reason you call yourself Ceasar?

A. Well isn’t that obvious? I consider my grow operation my personal empire, in here I am in charge!

Q: How did you discover you wanted to be a caregiver?

A. I had a friend who is a caregiver as well, I guess you could call him my mentor. I’m not going to lie, the money of course helped to motivate me to get started but it’s something I have become very passionate about it over the years. I take pride in assisting ill patients where the state has failed to do so.

Q: How long have you been growing?

A. About 5 years. Some ups and downs throughout the years as to be expected. Recently I had one of my best harvests to date. Growing is an art that requires patience, practice, and dedication.

Q: What obstacles did you experience while becoming

a caregiver?

A. Honestly, I didn’t have many prob-lems. Just a matter of asking the right questions, some paper work and pa-tience.

Q: What strains have you grown?

A. Daywreck, Citral, Cheese x Choco-late Thai, Sweet Juice, Dj Shorts, Blue-berry, Mendo Purps, and UK Cheese.

Q: What is your favorite strain to grow?

A. Sweet Juice. I love it because it requires very little maintenance and the yield is on the heavy side. Not to mention it’s just delicious!

Q: Do you prefer use seed or clone?

A. Actually I use both. I use clones for perpetual harvest, and seeds for new strains and new mothers. Clones mean guaranteed female, and seeds are good to guarantee their origin. It’s important to know where your medi-cine comes from, so you know precisely what you’re getting. You wouldn’t buy medicine without a bottle seal would you? Well I wont grow anything unless I know where its origin is.

Q: Do you prefer to use hydro or soil?

A. Again, I use both. With hydro I do under current, it keeps my clones on a consistent feeding cycle that promotes very fast growth. I only use soil for my mother plants. Soil allows them to grow slower and require less attention. I consider that the equivalent of send-ing your wife to the spa for a weekend, when Mom is happy everyone is happy...right?

CAREGIVER OF THE MONTH

Page 7: 1000watts June Issue

Q: What kind of lighting are you mainly using?

A. I use 20x 1,000 watt dual arc bulbs along with a 52” parabolic reflector. This set up allows me to cut a lot of time off the general harvest cycles, it grows about 3x faster than soil or regular hydro alone.

Q: What nutrients do you use?

A. For hydro, I use House & Garden. My soil is high quality 100% organic, bat guano, worm castings, kelp & crab meal, compost, etc. I also use highly oxogenanted reverse osmosis water. I use super thrive from start to finish. It has a neutral N-P-K, and it’s an amazing cocktail of hormones that you can use for everything. You’ll have about an 80% success rate for female plants.

Q: Do you donate medicine to patients who cannot afford it?

A. Cannabis is sometimes the only thing that will alleviate the pain of certain terminal illnesses. I

would never deprive a faithful patient just because they are a few bucks short that month, especially if they are suffering. Everyone I know has been in that situation once or twice, and there’s a reason why they call us ‘caregivers’.

Q: In your opinion, what is the hardest aspect of caregiving?

A. Loosing a patient. It’s absolutely devastating - to the point that I can’t formulate it into words.

Q: In your opinion, do you think Compassion Centers will ever open

it’s doors? A. I really hope so. I was very proud to see, the people of Rhode Island stand up to the U.S At-torney’s threat. It is sad to see the federal govern-ment waste it’s time and resources to bully the 3 dispensaries into not opening. Is three dispensaries in the smallest state in the country a threat to our freedom and saftey? Although, Rhode Island is small, it’s people are fierce and revolutionary by nature. The Compassion Centers will open, it’s common sense, and its the right thing to do.▀

“Chinese medicine, which dates back over 2,000 years, brings me in contact with over 400 herbal remedies

on a daily basis,” stated Dr. Seth Bock in an interview giv-en last spring while he awaited Rhode Island’s prolonged, but eventual decision to award his bid to establish one of the state’s first licensed medical marijuana dispensaries. “Marijuana is part of that pharmacopeia, and having wit-nessed its efficacy in clinical settings countless times, it’s a

no-brainer that I would seek to provide my patients, un-der state-approved conditions, something that could help them,” he commented.

Given his résumé and training, Bock has observed the medical, ethical and sociopolitical ramifications of medical marijuana from several distinct vantage points. His profes-sional background includes not only Chinese medicine, but also medical research ethics as well as oncology care. He was Manager of Regulatory Affairs for the Department of Interventional Cardiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospi-tal, and has worked with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Both of these nationally recognized and highly respected healthcare institutions are in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Bock has also witnessed the issue of medical mar-ijuana from a deeply personal perspective. Bock’s aunt, struggling with cancer over the course of 10 years—one of two family members who eventually succumbed to the disease—used marijuana illegally as a palliative for de-bilitating pain, and to counteract the nausea and physical wasting brought on by her illness and prolonged chemo-therapy treatment. At the time, there were no legal pro-grams for the prescription, usage, supply or demand of medical marijuana. “The medicinal benefits of marijuana extended my aunt’s life years beyond what would have otherwise been her outcome,” said Bock. “If others can benefit by gain-ing safe access to this simple, relatively non-toxic substance, there is absolutely no fear-based reason to deny them. It is both medically and ethically the right course of action.” Dr. Seth Bock, who owns and operates the Newport Acupuncture and Wellness Spa in Middletown, RI, intends to open the non-profit medical marijuana dispensary in nearby Portsmouth under the name Greenleaf Compas-sionate Care Center. For Greenleaf, Bock has assembled a highly credible team of established professionals with di-versely qualified backgrounds. Greenleaf ’s horticulture spe-cialist is currently a caregiver for the Rhode Island Medical

Marijuana Program (RIMMP). Bock’s Greenleaf staff will also include Dr. Da-vid Cunningham, a family practice phy-sician and former board chair of the Newport Hospital; Richard Radebach, president of the Well-ness Company, a non-profit medical

services provider that administers programs for the Rhode Island Department of Health; and Dennis Reid, a licensed pharmacist and medical technician.

Q. Are you still planning on opening your compassion cen-ter Greenleaf, and if so, what is your response to the U.S. Attorney’s letter to Chaffee?

A. As long as the Governor keeps the program on “hold” we can not legally open a compassion center. We under-stand Chaffee’s reason for delaying the program, however it is not clear how long he can legally keep it on hold given this is state law. I’m hoping the Governor realizes that this is an opportunity to show Rhode Islanders that he is willing to stand up for what is right. It seems that there are extremely influential private interests high up the food-chain that do not want medical marijuana to become law, under any con-ditions, despite the fact that there is no longer any scientific debate over whether marijuana has medicinal value. The fact that the FDA an DEA approved Marinol (synthetic THC) for schedule II status is proof positive that this plant is medicinal. Our every intention is to open our compassion center. However, until we receive the Governors approval and some affirmation that we will not be unnecessarily tar-geted by the Department of Justice, we will not be able to move forward.

Q. How many employees will be working?

A.To start we’re looking at 4 full time employees which doesnot include the five part time directors that will oversee all aspects of the business.

Q. Are you planning on selling edibles?

A. That will most certainly be a large part of what we do.There seems to be ever greater demand for edibles and from a health perspective we would want to offer a wide selection.

Q. Where are the strains from? And what strains will be sold when opening?

A. We have a supplier that has access to some of the best seed libraries. Between that and the readily available seeds, we have access to dozens of strains. Our horticulturalist is developing a top notch menu as we speak.

Q. What are you reasons for opening a compassion center?

A. I have been on the front lines of herbal and alterna-tive medicine for 12 years as an acupuncturist and Chinese

herbalist. In this time I have treated thousands of patients with numerous debilitating medical conditions. I have seen medical marijuana in action countless times and believe it is a very valuable medicine for many people. That said, I believe the federal government is overstepping its authority to ban natural substances with such little toxicity. There are writings of Abraham Lincoln describing his use of medi-cal and recreational marijuana. I think he would be rolling over in his grave if he new a man was just sentenced to life in prison for his fourth possession charge. Something is gravely off course with our criminal justice system as it pertains to marijuana. I speculate that if marijuana were legalized a lot of privately run prisons would be put out of business. So, the bottom line is, people need this medicine and I feel as though my unique background would help me craft a well balanced compassion center program.

Q. What types of products will you be able to provide pa-tients with besides marijuana?

A. I would like to open medical marijuana patients up to the universe of alternative and complimentary medicine. I feel that the marijuana specific culture often worships this herb at the expense of so many other powerful and benefi-cial herbs and therapies.

Q. What type of effect has the Chaffee letter had on Rhode Island?

A. The letter is definitely scaring some people and is having a ripple effect in the industry. The fact remains however, that this herb is a very useful medicine. No amount of fed-eral intimidation is going to change the medicinal nature of this plant. I mean, you have doctors at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute supporting the use of this medicine. It’s a no-brainer.▀

When you open a jar of San Fernando Valley Kush, people ten feet away will turn their heads. It has an extremely potent dank aroma, almost like a hash plant. The powerful scent of this indica-dominant strain provokes the senses with notes of earth and fresh greenery. San Fernando Valley Kush's big sticky

buds are covered with white hairs and beautiful trichome formations. The color is bright green and milky, with a hint of amber. "Originally my friend brought four seeds back from California last year. Of the four, three of them turned out to be female, one of the plants got pollenated so I have lots of seeds now!" Dj Stone recalled. San Fernando Valley Kush is of the same lineage as OG Kush, which is well known as one of the most potent medical strains ever. Rhode Island medical marijuana patients who suffer from severe pain, insom-nia, anxiety, and other ailments will certainly want to try this potent medi-cine. San Fernendo Valley Kush now has a strong base in the Ocean State, and it will help to bring much needed relief to medical marijuana patients in Rhode Island and beyond.

Flavor and Efficacy San Fernendo Valley Kush has a very distinctive and unique flavor, with the classic sharp kush taste domi-nating the flavor notes. The first toke makes your eyes water and your nose may even become a little itchy. The smoke was mild when smoked in a joint, it caused very little coughing or hacking so its perfect for a patient who can't strain a great deal. Employ-ing a vaporizor or water pipe may help to further smooth out the potent smoke this powerful indica produces. The effects were almost instantaneous with a calm feeling of relaxation from the moment of exhale. Recomended dosage is half a joint (or 1/2g).

In a country that self-righteously describes itself as “free” and not just “free”, but the shining example to the free

world. When in all reality, the typical American is nothing more than a drone, a slave to television “programming” and fast-food. Americans by large have a pedantic, juvenile un-derstanding of reality, history and their own origins as free humans born on planet Earth. Simply put, most Americans wouldn’t recognize freedom if it bit them in the ass. The source of Americans’ ignorance of how un-free they really are comes from their ignorance of what the dif-ferent types of rights are and what their sources are. Broad-ly speaking, there are two types of rights. There are natural rights and there are civil rights. Every drug law in the Unit-ed States, or in any single state therein, is a clear violation of both natural and civil rights.First, for natural rights. Natural rights predate all govern-ments. They existed before states, before nations, before cit-ies, before all trappings of civilization. Natural rights are bestowed upon us at birth, they are the universal truths which govern the cosmos, the “laws of nature”. Natural law supercedes all government, the founders of our nation understood this. Natural rights, Thomas Jefferson termed them inalien-able rights, and their source is nature itself, no earthly au-thority can deprive us of these rights. For example, every person has the right to live. Governments, of course, drop bombs on people the way most of us throw out used coffee filters. We also have the natural right to own and promote our own ideas, beliefs, and consumptions. Put much more sim-ply, every single person owns his or her body, mind, and

soul. Unless that person violates the body, mind, or soul of another person, it is entirely illegitimate for any govern-ment to exercise any control over one’s actions. For example, I can believe in whatever I want to believe unless or until my beliefs deprive others of their natural rights. The most well-known example of this premise is that I can say whatever I want, no matter how hateful or vulgar, but I can NOT shout “fire!” in a crowded theater. According to natural law, I own my own body and I have the right to use it as I see fit. Ask yourself, if someone does not have complete freedom over their own body, are they free? The question answers itself. Any law, therefore, that restricts or regulates what I put into my body is a viola-tion of my natural rights. Unless my consumption deprives others of their rights, no limitations can be put on what I choose to put into my own body. The most insulting ignorance that Americans show about rights is evident in our drug laws. Most Americans think drugs should be illegal. I do not. Most Americans would think that I am advocating drug use. I am not. I am advocating freedom of choice and action. If heroin were legalized tomorrow, how many of us would start using heroin? If this question sounds absurd, that only betrays the absurdity of our drug laws. I do not need the government to forbid me to use heroin; I need my own common sense to do that. Most Americans have the mentality of children who still need “Big Daddy’s” ap-proval, what we really need; is to start thinking and acting like adults capable of making our own decisions. Drug laws are based upon this premise: the government needs to “take care” of us by restricting our freedom of personal choice because if we were truly free to choose, we would degenerate into heroin addicts. This concept of be-nevolent tyranny is so antithetical to what the American Revolution was supposed to be about that we may as well have never had a revolution. All of the wrangling between the federal government and the states over medical marijuana laws, for example, are a charade and a distraction from the true matter at hand here, which is that no government has any right to regulate what plants we eat, drink, or smoke. Any restriction on our personal use of our own body violates natural law. For the people who know that government does not have the right to outlaw certain drugs, it is evident these Draconian drug laws are a deep violation of the American system and what the writers of the constitution envisioned for us. The federal government only has the specific powers enumerated to it in the Constitution. Of course, the history of American government is largely the history of the fed-eral government selling our country out to private interests like the federal reserve (with is not federal, but a private

bank), or other big business cartels. It has tyrannically in-sinuated itself so far into our lives that our society has now became a corporate fascist state, much like Nazi Germany in the years before WWII.

The Constitution does not say “We, the people, in order to prevent people from getting high....”. That’s not in there. Trust me. Nowhere in that document is the government given the authority to regulate any food, drug, medicine. Of course that does not stop them from establishing bu-reaucratic organizations to regulate and control us.

What the Constitution says in the 10th amendment, (the most ignored amendment in the Bill of Rights): is that any power not specifically given to the federal government goes

to the states or the people. According to the 10th amendment the federal govern-ment has little to no legal recourse to in-terfere with the gov-ernments of individ-ual states. S o w h e n Rhode Island passed a medical marijua-na law, two things

should have been clear. Firstly, that law violated our natural rights to our own body, as explained above. Secondly, if we accept the premise that the government can regulate what we ingest (which I do NOT) then that power should rightly go to the states. The federal government has no role in this issue whichever way you slice it.

Now Rhode Islanders are being doubly tyrannized. We are tyrannized by our state which violates our natural rights by telling us what, when, and how we can use our own bod-ies We are also tyrannized by the federal government which tells our state that it has no right to even partially lessen or rationalize these tyrannical infringements upon our human rights.

What is left to us when every level of government has failed us? What can we do when our rights are removed in the interest of “protecting” us from ourselves? Our only course of action is to stop acting like slaves, switch off the TV, and start demanding that our human rights be given back to us! If not, the spirit of 1776 burns bright in Rhode Islanders, we started the American revolution right here in the Ocean State, and we can do it again. Our leaders fear us, they fear the power unified people represent, they know they can’t control us if we work together, thats why they divide us through skin color, social status, and other superfi-cial means. It is time for the human race to get off it’s knees and stand up!▀

1000 Watts: How long have you been in radio?

Geoff Charles: I’m going to say about 35 Years.

1000 Watts: How old were you when you first started?

Geoff Charles: That’s the interesting part of the story. I got into radio the day Elvis Presley died. At that time, I was working in kind of head shop/roller skate shop a friend of mine had in Pacific Beach California. I was walking back from the bank. I was doing a deposit, in a t-shirt and flip-flops. This guy comes up to me with a microphone and a camera from some local station and says, “What do you think about the death of Elvis Presley?”I replied, “Elvis Presley just died?”“Yes, he died this mourning, they found him dead.” replied the reporter.“Oh well…” I launched into this 5-minute thing about El-vis Presley. They thanked me for it and gave me a dollar. That night, Dick Van Dyke, who at the time owned some radio stations, said, “Who is that guy who talked about El-vis Presley?” To make a long story short, they got me into a radio station in Phoenix Arizona. I had not been in ra-dio before, and they showed me everything. They liked my voice, and I talked to the general manager, that’s how I started my career, on an AM radio station playing big band. And Dick Van Dyke would come over on Saturday

mornings and record a little show; some show he would do by himself, where he would play his favorite music because he owned the station.

1000 Watts: Would you say you’re well known for the 420 club?

Geoff Charles: That’s the oldest 420 club in the nation, in this nation. There may be an older one in Canada but I doubt it. I know in the United States, it’s the oldest radio 420 club in the country. That’s because I was doing it when that was Taboo.

1000 Watts:And how did you start that?

Geoff Charles: I knew about 420, and the two different stories. The one that seems to hold more magic than any-thing else, kids meeting after school in California because

of the time they would get out of class, meet me after school at 420 to smoke a joint behind the… That seems to be the truest story. The story my generation has that it was a police call. A 420 at the corner of central and Suffolk. That either meant doing illicit drugs, or dealing illicit drugs. That came from Haight-Ashbury. In the Haight-Ashbury district they were smoking joints all the time. In fact its fun today to look back on Haight-Ashbury, to meeting Bob Weir from the Grateful Dead. Seeing him forever, on that Album cover, where he’s the youngest member of the band. Long hair, and they are in that victorian house, all posing on the steps. Nobody knew right across the street was a Hells Angel’s clubhouse, and they loved the Grateful Dead, they rode their motorcycles by all the time. Meeting Bob Weir, think-ing about how long his hair was. What a legend he was. I think of all the people who ever came to the radio sta-tion, rock stars, etc. I think that Cheech and Chong prob-ably had the greatest line up outside at the radio station. We had people lined up along the parking lot. We’ve had other stars, but they have nothing on Cheech and Chong. When Cheech and Chong went outside after I had talked to them, and had them in the studio. Tommy Chong says to me “Yeah man, this is what radio ought to be like, just a couple guys like this sitting around talking.” They went outside and spent there time signing album covers. When Cheech Marin smiles, he lights up a room, its like magic.

1000 Watts: Tell us what you want our readers to know about you?

Geoff Charles: Absolutely Nothing! What I want people to know; gee that’s a tough question. I think people know me because what I do on the air is real. I don’t do anything on the air that isn’t me. I wouldn’t do anything or say any-thing that didn’t pop out from my heart. So I want them to know that, it’s all ad lib. I know a lot of things about life and such, and I know facts, and a lot of weird stuff. It costs 2 cents to make a penny.

1000 Watts: And you’ve always been like that?

Geoff Charles: Yeah, I always have. The guy who fired and hired me in radio said, “You know, your head is like a big sponge that sucks up everything.” And he goes “I don’t know where you’re going with that, but you should go someplace.” He said. “Whatever is going to happen, that sponge is going to work for you, and it has.” Steven King told me we all have different filters in our heads, and his just catches different lint and dust than mine does, or anyone else’s does. And that’s a good way to look at it.

1000 Watts: How do you feel about activist groups?

However, the years marched on and so did we. Some of us went off to college where we earned our higher educations. Others started construction or land-scaping businesses. Many trav-eled the world following their dreams or the Grateful Dead or both. And some, believe it or not, actually became famous. As unbelievable as it may seem, those dirt bags who coasted through school and never once achieved a spot on the sacred Honor Roll, gained national recognition and the support of major corporations and the general public alike.

Celebrities are literally worshiped here in America, they have an enormous influ-ence on the way people perceive reality. This celebrity influence, which is usually just a mindless distraction to keep people from using their brains construc-tively to think about real issues, might ironically have the potential to be an ace-up-the-sleeve for medical marijuana advocates. Many celebrities are coming forward with their pipes loaded ready to “smoke out the evil-doers” who are against this freedom. I am not just talking about Cheech & Chong who are the godfathers of questioning authority. Nor am I referring to Willie Nelson, who has been leading the charge even before NORML came on the scene.

Let’s look at one of today’s popular mainstream comic icons, Drew Carey. Mr. Carey has made his living as one of the top comedians on television. He is quick with improvisation, intelligent, and very well spoken. In late 2009, Mr. Carey aired Epsiode 2 of Reason.TV discussing medical marijuana. Within this 10 minute 45 second show, Mr. Carey interviewed patients who benefit from medical marijuana, and he also brought his cameras in to tour a dispensary. All the while maintaining a cheerful demeanor and leading his presentation with facts. The episode raised awareness of the health and economic benefits of medical marijuana. Personally, my favorite line is when Mr. Carey first enters the dispensary. He takes a deep breath of air, exhales longingly and states, “Smell that smell? That’s the smell of freedom!”

Another mainstream celebrity who endorses the med-ical marijuana is Montel Williams. In 1990, Mr. Williams

was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis; a disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, over time eventually causing them to stop working, ultimately re-sulting in death. According to a report from Today.com, Mr. Williams had, “been living with pain in his lower extremities, face, and side for years ... and added that marijuana provided the only relief he could find”. The report also stated that Mr. Williams, as a pro-canna-bis advocate, “has urged state lawmakers to legalize medical marijuana in Maryland”, by re-laying his personal experience with cannabis and how it has helped him. So, there may be a bright side after all to this fixation America has for television per-sonalities. When mainstream

America gets a glimpse of their favorite squeaky clean stars smoking OG Kush, and railing about it’s medicinal value, their long-held stereotypes and misconceptions just might change. Forever.

Interestingly, Amigula Inc. has reportedly become the first medical marijuana company to be publicly traded. According to a report on Marijuana.com, Amigula Inc. is actively seeking out the assistance of Hollywood agents in hopes that their stars will become spokespeople for Amig-ula Inc. and medical marijuana as a whole. People listen to actors and actresses; there is a trust that is undeniable. It is not without a slight smile that I type these words. The irony of Hollywood and its participation in the “Just Say ‘No’” campaign compared to its new possible role in advocating for medical marijuana is proof of evolution. Furthermore, it shows that you cannot have revolution without it.▀

NORMLMOVING MOUNTAINS IN COLORADOby Zat Nickatel

The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) recently held its

40th annual national conference in the mile high city of Denver, Colorado. The three-day event celebrat-ed NORML’s 40 year commitment to being on the frontlines of the marijuana reform movement. The 2011 “Coming of Age” conference featured many educational and political panels, including a Denver mayoral debate moderated by long-time medical mar-ijuana advocate Montel Williams. Denver has always been one of America’s most pot-friendly cities, with a very healthy medical-cannabis indus-try. Denver, Colorado is making an example to other major American cities that are still undecided about reforming their own outdated marijuana prohibition laws. This beau-tiful and progressive city gave a fitting backdrop to the is-sues being discussed at this milestone conference. The first day kicked off with a candid speech from the founder of NORML, Keith Stroup. “It is time for us as a movement to come clean, and to stop trying to use the medical use of marijuana as an excuse for those of us who are recreational smokers, to smoke.” Stoup said. “And to focus on our real goal, which is the full legalization of mari-juana for adults REGARDLESS of why the individual is smoking. It is none of the governments business whether we smoke or why we smoke!” Stroup also stressed the right for consumers to grow their own cannabis. “If some government tries to charge too much for marijuana ... if they try to sell us marijuana that’s poor quality or inconvenient, to hell with them. We’ll grow our own.” Stroup advocates strongly for full legalization and repeal of cannabis prohibition laws. The mood of his speech was optimistic, with strong emphasis on consumer rights and the future of NORML. He outlined the fact that many dif-ferent states are starting to pass bills concerning not only medical usage but also full legalization in the case of Cali-fornia and Colorado, which are the two states possibly on the verge of legalization. “We are winning this issue.” Stroup said. “Sometime in

the very near future ... we are actually going to see responsi-ble marijuana smoking legalized in this country.” NORML founder Keith Stroup’s presentation set the stage for an ex-citing and groundbreaking conference. Later that day, television host Montel Williams mod-erated an enlightening mayoral debate, featuring the five leading candidates for Mayor of Denver. The candidates gave statements outlining their various stances on the medi-cal cannabis issue. The opinions of the candidates varied slightly along the spectrum from medical use only, to full decriminalization. NORML gathered a diverse multidisciplinary cross-section of cannabis reform proponents from all walks of life. There were presentations by leading University doctors outlining the proven scientific benefits of cannabis. As well as presentations concerning the commercial gains that are possible if a free and open cannabis industry is allowed to flourish. High Times and NORMAL held an activist award ceremony and art auction with an intimate acoustic set by Ziggy Marley. The mood of the conference was highly optimistic with an aire of imminent victory. It was obvious by the vari-ous messages put forth that there are many levels to break through concerning cannabis reform. Medical marijuana is only one step in the struggle for cannabis freedom. As long as people are still be sentenced to extended jail terms for non-violent drug offenses, as long as it still illegal for respon-sible adults to use cannabis as they see fit, NORML will be on the frontlines fighting the good fight. Marijuana reform is what NORML is all about and we are all fortunate that they are out there fighting for our rights.▀For more info visit NORML.org

Step 1: Take 6 buckets, on opposite sides of the buckets measure up 4 inches from the bottom and center from each side. Make sure the water flow is not impaired by measur-ing precisely, and consistently. The last bucket (feeder bucket) will only need one hole drilled for the 2 inch PVC, (make sure it is still the same measurements, like the other buckets.) With the hole facing you, the bucket also needs a ¾th inch hole on the top right side about 3 inches down and centered, and a ¾ inch hole on the bottom left side about 3 inch up and centered. On the centered mark, drill out the 15 holes needed, and insert the uniseals (rubber rings) to form a water tight seal with the PVC.

Step 2: With the PVC primer and glue make the two ends, each with 2- 2 inch x 3 ft. PVC and a PVC ‘T’ in the middle. Lay out the unit with the buckets and PVC appropri-ately placed, (see picture) with a friend, and the container of water based lubricant, coat the outside of each of the 2 inch x 4 ft. PVC with the cut angles on either end, and the inside of the uniseals (rubber rings). Standing across from each other slowly twisting to insert the PVC into the uniseals until the bottom of the angle is about 2 inch past the seal when looking inside the bucket (6 inches in total). Continue this step until you have all but the corners on. Make sure the unit is level, now to each corner use the PVC primer and glue to connect the 4 Elbows, making sure the ‘T’s’ are facing up. (Refer to picture, closed unit with the Feeder bucket at the top.) At this time, using the PVC primer and glue you will also

need to connect the 4 shorter pieces of PVC to the open end of the elbow keeping the cut angle inside the buckets.

Step 3: To the bottom of the unit (the opposite side of the feeder bucket) connect the shut off valve and the 10 ft long ¾ inch PVC (cut if needed) using the reducing bushing and white teflon tape. (Once the system is together tightening is difficult make sure everything is tightened along the way.) To the other end of the ¾ inch PVC connect the wa-ter pump, making sure to use the white teflon tape and tightening. Attach the ⅞th hose adapter to the top of the pump with white teflon tape, connect the black hose with clamps. Run the hose to the right side of the feeder bucket and connect to the ¾ inch PVC ‘T’ to bring the water into the bucket. The last hole in the feeder bucket is for the drain valve, insert ensuring a closed seal.

Step 4: Using your ⅜th inch drill bit, drill a small hole in the corner of each of the lids for the buckets. From the air pump connect the clear hose and measure to the bottom of each of the buckets, one end of the hose connects to the pump, the other end insert through the small hole and connect the air pump and place at the bottom of the bucket (see picture). Feeder bucket gets 2 air stones.

Step 5: Make sure there are no leaks. Check all the buck-ets and connections are lined up. Clear out any debris and dust left from construction before using with plants.▀

BOOST YOUR BRAIN

An Open Letter to

President Obama

You were known and elected for being the presi-dent of “change”, in 2004 you stated that the war on drugs was an utter failure, seeing over the last 40 years, trillions of dollars have been spent and we are only seeing an increase in use, demand and vio-lence and a decrease in price. You also had stated that you believe in decimalization of marijuana.

In 2007 you stated that you would not have the justice system prosecute anyone for medical mari-juana use, that it should be up to the state to make the appropriate decision for their citizens, yet now in your presidency your allowing federal prosecu-tion for established medical marijuana states that are looking to bring increased income to their economy.

How would you feel if admitting to inhal-ing the smoke as a child made it so you were not able to run for president? Do you think you’re mor-ally corrupt compared to someone who has never smoked Mari-juana but has committed vehicular homicide under the influence of alcohol?

Do you think a young adults life should be based on weather or not they have smoke a herb that has not one reported case of death anywhere?.

How can we trust the FDA, who has overseen the release

of millions of prescrip-tion drugs. When un-

der the Food and Drug Administration, There has been so many pre-scription drugs widely known for deaths, birth defects, and side ef-fects that are sometimes worse than the symptoms

it’s masking? You had once said that

USA needs to decrease the demand for Marijuana, that

is how we are going to solve this problem, How do you suppose that we decrease such a logical demand? Not only is marijuana one of the oldest known medicinal herbs, but industrially the Hemp plant provides a multitude of economic and practi-cal uses, paper, clothing, lumber, all of which is able to be taxed, provide jobs and bring income back to the economy as a whole.

The Government and media like to attach a nega-tive connotation to marijuana, such as Reefer Mad-ness, a gateway drug, and terrorist activity. By con-necting marijuana with; cocaine, crack, and meth, the Government is able to trick people into thinking marijuana alone is harmful.

Just recently with news of Osama Bin Laden’s death, the media tried to turn marijuana into a Ter-rorist scheme, by suggesting Osama having mari-juana plants near his home, like many, many others in Pakistan, Afghanistan and surrounding areas. This is not a tactic for terrorists who live there; this is because marijuana and hashish originated, and grow wildly in the mountains and hillsides of the Middle East. The citizens have no plans to use

this plant against the US in hopes of taking over our country. It would be like France’s government deciding dandelions were il-legal and if one grew naturally in your yard you would be called a terrorist and locked away…? Is marijuana bad

just because bad people live around it?...What about the presidents in the past, of 44 presi-

dents, 13 have admitted to smoking, growing and supporting the marijuana industry. G. Washington, would use marijuana to sooth pain, no doubt for his wooden teeth, it was the original aspirin, he has also noted in a personal journal how he would go down by the swamps where he had his marijuana fields and separate the males from females.

Thomas Jefferson another president known for recreational and medical use of marijuana is cred-ited with the phrase in the Declaration of Indepen-dence, “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,”

Seems like the pursuit of happiness is being held

against US citizens. When the majority is actively

vocalizing and grasping for the logical and simple

change that will bring our country back to life.

Rhode Island House of Representatives minority leader (R) Robert A. Watson of East Greenwich, who in the

past, has refused to even debate over the decriminalization of marijuana in Rhode Island, is now facing charges of his own. He was recently arrested for DUI and marijuana pos-session in East Haven Connecticut on April 22nd 2011. Members of the East Haven PD stopped Watson at a police “sobriety roadblock”. The arresting officer said that he could smell alcohol and marijuana in the cab of Wat-son’s pick-up truck and that he was slurring his speech. The officer also claimed that Mr. Watson’ s eyes were “glossy and bloodshot”. The police claim that Watson performed poorly on his field sobriety tests. As a result, they determined he was un-able to drive, and proceeded to place him in custody. After arresting Watson, the officer reported finding a small plastic bag containing a “green leafy plant-like substance” and a small wooden marijuana-smoking pipe, in his pants pocket. An alcohol breath test performed at the police sta-tion determined that Watson’s blood-alcohol level was .05 percent, which was far below the state’s .08 limit. Watson claims the police are falsifying the results of the field sobri-ety test. “I wish there had been cameras there. I wish it wasn’t just my word against the police,” he said. East Haven po-lice have said their cars are not equipped with cameras. Watson admits to using marijuana to treat his chronic pancreatitis flare-ups. He described his pain to Providence Journal reporters as: “debilitating pain that literally had me flat on my back, wondering at what point I decide an ambulance comes and takes me away. And I’ve got to con-fess it (Cannabis) worked. It provided relief. And it allevi-ated the pain.” Watson claims he brought the cannabis to Connecticut because he had just experienced a painful flare-up the day before. He was there for the day helping a friend move, and needed a way to alleviate his pain in the event of another

flare-up. Although medical marijuana is legal in RI, he did not become a documented medical marijuana patient. When asked why he didn’t go through the legal means to obtain the right to use cannabis medically, he said he was reluctant to legally become a medical marijuana patient because he feared his personal medical information would be leaked out of the Rhode Island Department of Health. A Health Department spokeswoman assured reporters: “We have been running the program for almost four years now and we have not released any patient’s names.” Watson was quoted as saying: “Now I know that the Department of Health prides itself on the confidentiality of that program. But let’s face it,” Watson said. “I am a public official, as we all are, we’re a small state, and I am not certain that my privacy wouldn’t be compromised were I to do this medical marijuana treatment in the proper form and fashion.” On Monday May 2nd 2011, House minority leader Robert A. Watson was voted out of his leadership posi-tion in The Rhode Island House of Representatives. When asked why the sudden decision was made, the new House minority leader (R) Brian Newberry replied to reporters: “We had not a chance to talk about it with one another, to digest it, to really take in the situation. We had a week to do that, we were able to talk to each other about it, see how we felt and the majority of us have had a change in heart.” Clearly Watson was correct in his assessment of how the public and his fellow legislators would react to such a high ranking public official being caught using cannabis to alleviate a medical condition. When asked about his plans for the future, Watson told The Associated Press: “I’m not going anywhere. I will con-tinue to be the same voice that I have always been,” Watson said. “I’m proud of the role I have played.” Well the truth is most Rhode Islanders are not proud of the way Watson handled the aftermath of his arrest and outing as a cannabis user. He makes the medical marijua-na program look bad by not trusting the confidentiality of the Health Department. Watson also essentially turned his back on mainstream responsible adult smokers by arguing against decriminalization. The people of Rhode Island need to take a look at what is going on in more progressive areas of the country like Colorado and California. We need to realize that our politicians work for us, and we have the constitutional right to only elect public servants we feel will best represent our wishes. Rhode Islanders need to stop electing these hypo-critical politicians who are not serving the best interests of the people.▀
